Description

PLANT POT AND TRAY COMPRISING SUCH PLANT POTS
The present invention relates to a plant pot comprising a side wall and a bottom plate, wherein said side wall has a top side with a top edge which defines a top opening of the plant pot and a bottom side with a bottom edge arranged to hold the bottom plate, wherein said plant pot is arranged to be filled with a growth medium wherein a seed can be placed to grow a plant or wherein a plant can be placed to grow .
When a plant is grown in a pot with a growth medium such as potting soil, for instance from a seed or a cutting, for instance at a plant farm, the plant develops roots. The roots tend to grow very long, which is generally good for the health of the plant. Often the roots grow through holes in the bottom plate of the pot, which holes are provided for drainage of excess water from the pot and/or to allow said roots to grow further. A problem that arises when the plant has grown to an extent that it needs to be repotted to a bigger pot, a planter or a border, for instance after it has been sold to the public, is that the roots that have grown through the bottom plate prevent the plant from being taken out of the pot, and often the end parts of the root need to be cut or torn of to be able to take the plant out of the pot. This may be detrimental to the health of the plant. The current invention is aimed at solving this problem.
To this end, the plant pot according to the preamble is characterized in that the bottom plate is separate from the side wall, and the side wall is provided with means to carry the bottom plate near the bottom edge of the side wall such that the bottom side of the plant pot is substantially closed for holding the growth medium inside the plant pot while the plant is growing and the bottom plate can be removed from the side wall together with the plant and at least part of the growth medium through the top opening of the plant pot.
Hereby the plant (and at least part of the growth medium) can be easily taken out of the pot with the bottom plate attached to it, while not damaging the roots of the plant. The plant can then be put in a bigger pot, a planter or a border together with the bottom plate.
According to a preferred embodiment, the bottom plate is provided with one or more holes for draining excess water from the growth medium . The holes may be provided by perforation of the bottom plate or by using a porous material for the bottom plate. Such material may for instance be a porous vegetable material, such as coconut fibres, or a porous biodegradable plastic.
According to a preferred embodiment, the bottom plate is made of a different material then the side wall.
According to a preferred embodiment, the bottom plate is made of a vegetable material or a biodegradable plastic.
According to an especially preferred embodiment, the bottom plate is made of coconut fibres.
By using a vegetable material, such as coconut fibres, or biodegradable material for the bottom, plate the bottom plate can stay in for instance a border without damaging the environment.
According to a preferred embodiment, the means to carry the bottom plate comprise a flange or a multitude of protrusions which extend (s) inwardly from the bottom edge of the side wall.
If the means to carry the bottom plate are in the form of a flange, this has the further advantage that such a flange provides stiffness to the side wall.
According to a preferred embodiment, the side wall is made of a plastic material.
According to a preferred embodiment, the side wall is provided with a flange which extends outwardly form the top edge of the side wall .
According to a preferred embodiment, the side wall is substantially f rustoconical, wherein the diameter of the top side is larger than the diameter of the bottom side.
Hereby the plant and the growth medium can be easily removed from the plant pot without damage.
According to a preferred embodiment, the side wall, seen from above, has a substantially circular, square or polygonal circumference .
According to a favourable embodiment, the plant pot is comprised in a tray comprising a multitude of said plant pots.
An example of a tray with a multitude of plant pots is shown in GB1534202A.
Finally, the present invention relates to a tray comprising a multitude of plant pots in accordance with any of the preceding claims, wherein the top edges of the plant pots are mutually connected so as to form the tray.
The present invention will now be illustrated with reference to the drawing where
Fig. 1 shows a cross section of a plant pot according to the invention . .
A preferred embodiment of a plant pot 101 according to the invention is shown in the figure.
The plant pot 101 comprises a f rustoconical side wall 102, having a central vertical axis 103. The top inner diameter of the side wall at the top edge of the wall is larger than the bottom inner diameter at the bottom edge of the side wall. A top flange 104 extends outwardly from the top edge of the side wall 102, and a bottom flange 105 extends inwardly from the bottom edge of the side wall 102. The side wall 102, the top flange 104 and the bottom flange 105 may be integrally made of a suitable plastic material.
A substantially disc shaped bottom plate 106 is provided, said bottom plate 106 having an shape and diameter that substantially matches the bottom inner diameter of the side wall 102, and said shape and diameter is larger than the shape and diameter of the inner edge of the bottom flange 105, such that the bottom flange 105 is able to support the bottom plate 106 inside the plant pot 101, and such that the plant pot can be filled by a growth medium such as soil 107, wherein a plant or seed can grow. The bottom plate 106 is provided with drainage holes 108, for instance 8 to 12 drainage holes 108, which allows for excess water to drain from the soil 107, and through which the roots of the plant can grow.
Once a plant has grown sufficiently to be repotted, and possibly its roots have grown into the soil 107 and through the drainage holes 108, the plant with its roots, the soil 107 and the bottom plate 106 can be easily taken out of the side wall and placed in a bigger pot, a planter or a border.
