Abstract

A hybrid pillow includes a first lateral portion, a medial portion, and a second lateral portion. The first lateral portion includes a first thickness. The medial portion is disposed adjacent to the first lateral section, the medial portion including a second thickness. The second lateral portion is disposed adjacent to the medial portion, and the medial portion is disposed between the first lateral portion and the second lateral portion. The second lateral portion includes a third thickness. The hybrid pillow includes one or more slots on a top of the hybrid pillow in the first lateral portion, the one or more slots extending only partially through the first thickness.

HYBRID PILLOW

BACKGROUND

[0001] This disclosure relates generally to a hybrid pillow.

SUMMARY

[0002] The subject matter of the present application has been developed in response to the present state of the art, and in particular, in response to the problems and disadvantages associated with conventional pillows that have not yet been fully solved by currently available techniques. Accordingly, the subject matter of the present application has been developed to provide embodiments of a system, apparatus, and method that overcome at least some of the shortcomings of prior art techniques.

[0003] Disclosed herein is a hybrid pillow. The hybrid pillow includes a first lateral portion comprising: a first thickness; a medial portion, disposed adjacent to the first lateral section, the medial portion comprising: a second thickness; a second lateral portion disposed adjacent to the medial portion, wherein the medial portion is disposed between the first lateral portion and the second lateral portion, the second lateral portion comprising: a third thickness; one or more slots on a top of the hybrid pillow in the first lateral portion, the one or more slots extending only partially through the first thickness. In at least some embodiments, the hybrid pillow includes different lateral portions with at least one portion having different load characteristics than another portion. Some possible load characteristics which might be unique between separate portions include but are not limited to indentation load deflection (ILD), density, compression, temperature response, rebound, and so forth. Other embodiments may have additional or different load characteristics than those listed here, dependent on the type of material(s) used for the pillow portions.

[0056] In some embodiments, at least two lateral portions and a medial portion, flanked on either side by one of the two lateral portions. The lateral portions attach to the medial portion via adhesive and are of a different density than the medial portion. Such attachment, and difference in density, allows the lateral portions of the hybrid pillow to flex about the medial portion of the hybrid pillow while a user rests their head. The placement, and amount, of adhesive between the medial and lateral portions can be adjusted to provide more, or less, flexibility to the lateral portions of the hybrid pillow.

When sleeping on the side, the shape of the hybrid pillow is configured to fill the space between the user’s shoulder and head/ neck area. Additionally, the higher density of the lateral portions provides the necessary structure to support the head/neck area while the user is on their side.

Head and neck support is required at all points during this movement, in addition to the support required when sleeping on the side. The lateral portions of the hybrid pillow flex around the medial portion when a user is rolling from one side to the other. The medial portion, being of lesser density, is configured to crumple and, in this way, cradle the user’s head as the user rolls, and rests, on their back.

The illustrated hybrid pillow 100 includes a first lateral portion 102, a medial portion 104 and a second lateral portion 106. In at least some embodiments, the first lateral portion 102, the second lateral portion 104, and the medial portion 106 are cuboid or rectangular. In some embodiments, the first and second lateral portions 182, 186 are configured to fit around the hourglass shape of the medial portion 184. These markers 226 and 228 may be any type of visual or physical indication for the placement of a user’s head on the pillow. For example, the first marker 226 may be a physical depression in the top surface of the material for the first portion 222, and the geometry of the depression may be sized approximately for the ear of the user (meaning a size anticipated to be accommodating of the length, width, and depth of a user’s ear when the user uses the pillow for side sleeping). In another example, the second marker 228 may be a physical depression in the top surface of the material for the second portion 224, and the geometry of the depression may be sized approximately for the back side of the user’s head (meaning a size anticipated to be accommodating of the length, width, and depth of a portion of user’s head when the user uses the pillow for back sleeping).

[0073] Figure 8A depicts a top view of another embodiment of a hybrid pillow 240. The hybrid pillow 240 includes a first lateral portion 242 and a second lateral portion 246. The hybrid pillow 240 also includes perforations 248 in a central portion 244. In some embodiments, the hybrid pillow 240 is a single piece, with the first lateral portion 242 being at a first end thereof, and the second lateral portion 246 being at a second end thereof. The perforations 248 are disposed between the first and second lateral portions 242, 246. In some embodiments, the perforations 248 are disposed symmetrically between the first and second lateral portions 242, 246. In some embodiments, the perforations 248 are disposed asymmetrically between the first and second lateral portions 242, 246. Although a specific pattern is shown, other embodiments my implement different patterns or no pattern at all.

A hybrid pillow comprising: a first lateral portion comprising a first thickness; a medial portion, disposed adjacent to the first lateral section, the medial portion comprising a second thickness; a second lateral portion disposed adjacent to the medial portion, wherein the medial portion is disposed between the first lateral portion and the second lateral portion, the second lateral portion comprising a third thickness; and one or more slots on a top of the hybrid pillow in the first lateral portion, the one or more slots extending only partially through the first thickness.

2. The hybrid pillow of claim 1 , wherein the first lateral portion comprises a uniform first thickness.

3. The hybrid pillow of claim 1, wherein the second lateral portion comprises a uniform third thickness.

4. The hybrid pillow of claim 1 , wherein the medial portion comprises a non- uniform second thickness, wherein the non-uniform second thickness is less than the first thickness and the third thickness.

5. The hybrid pillow of claim 4, wherein the non-uniform second thickness varies in thickness across a width of the medial portion and wherein the non-uniform thickness does not vary in thickness across a depth of the medial portion.

6. The hybrid pillow of claim 1 , wherein the first lateral portion comprises a first width and the second lateral portion comprises a second width, wherein the first width is greater than the second width.

The hybrid pillow of claim 11, wherein the first lateral portion comprises a uniform first thickness. The hybrid pillow of claim 12, wherein the second lateral portion comprises a uniform third thickness, wherein the uniform first thickness and the uniform second thickness are equal in thickness. The hybrid pillow of claim 13, wherein the medial portion comprises a non-uniform second thickness, wherein the non-uniform second thickness is less than the first thickness and the third thickness. The hybrid pillow of claim 14, wherein the non-uniform second thickness varies in thickness across a width of the medial portion and wherein the non-uniform thickness does not vary in thickness across a depth of the medial portion. The hybrid pillow of claim 11, wherein the first lateral portion comprises a first width and the second lateral portion comprises a second width, wherein the first width is greater than the second width such that the medial portion is not centered on the hybrid pillow. The hybrid pillow of claim 11, wherein the one or more slots extend throughout a length of the first lateral portion and a portion of the medial portion. The hybrid pillow of claim 17, wherein the one or more slots in the second lateral portion extend throughout a length of the second lateral portion and a portion of the medial portion. The hybrid pillow of claim 18, wherein the one or more slots in the first lateral portion and the one or more slots in the second lateral portion are aligned. The hybrid pillow of claim 19, wherein the medial portion comprises a flat medial portion and a first sloped section that provides an angled surface connecting the flat medial portion with the first lateral portion and a second sloped section that provides an angled second surface connecting the flat medial portion with the second lateral portion.
