Abstract
본 발명은 귀금속, 특히 이리듐과 루테늄의 로딩량을 낮추면서도 우수한 촉매 활성을 나타내고 소량의 도펀트를 도입하여 촉매 내 이리듐과 루테늄의 조성 분포에 변화를 준 이리듐 루테늄 기반 수전해용 산화극 촉매와 그 제조방법 및 이를 이용하는 수전해 장치에 관한 것으로서, 전이금속 원소의 도펀트를 도입하여 전구체의 환원 속도 조절을 통한 공동 돌기 구조를 가지는 헤테로 구조를 구현하되 입자 내 이리듐과 루테늄의 서로 다른 상이 인접해 있도록 구성함으로써 우수한 촉매 활성과 안정성을 나타내고 산소발생반응(OER)을 촉진 및 성능을 높일 수 있으며 산성(acidic) 환경에서의 산소발생반응(OER)에 대한 전기 촉매적 고효율과 고안정성을 갖게 하는 이리듐 루테늄 기반의 수전해용 산화극 촉매와 그 제조방법 및 이를 이용하는 수전해 장치를 제안한다.
Description
본 발명은 음극 산소를 발생시키는 이리듐 루테늄 기반 수전해용 산화극 촉매와 그 제조방법 및 이를 이용한 수전해 장치에 관한 것으로서, 더욱 상세하게는 도펀트를 도입하여 촉매 내 조성 분포를 변화시킴으로써 헤테로 구조를 구현할 수 있도록 하며 산소발생반응(OER)의 높은 활성과 안정성을 갖도록 한 이리듐 루테늄 기반 수전해용 산화극 촉매와 그 제조방법 및 이를 이용한 수전해 장치에 관한 것이다.
전 세계적으로 에너지 수요가 증가되면서 화석연료의 사용으로 인한 기후 변화 문제가 심각해지고 있다.
이러한 기후 변화 문제를 해결할 대체에너지로서 태양광, 풍력, 지열 발전 등의 신재생 에너지가 각광을 받고 있다.
하지만, 신재생 에너지로 생산된 전기에너지는 간헐적이기 때문에 연료 형태로의 저장이 필요하며, 수소는 이에 있어 가장 유망한 연료 후보로서 수소를 연료로 사용할 경우 공해물질이 생성되지 않기 때문에 자동차에 적용하여 수소차의 상용화가 이루어질 정도로 연구가 많이 진행된 상황이다.
반면에, 수소 생산에 있어 궁극적으로 나아갈 방향인 물의 수전해 기술은 실증 및 상용화에 있어 상당한 어려움에 있다. 특히 산소발생반응(Oxygen Evolution Reaction, OER)은 많은 전자의 이동을 수반함과 동시에 반응속도가 느린 것으로 알려져있기 때문에 수전해 장치의 성능을 극대화시키기 위해서는 고성능 및 고내구성 산소발생반응(OER) 촉매의 개발이 필수적으로 요구되고 있다.
한편, 이와 같은 수전해 장치용 산화극 촉매 및 그 제조방법에 대해서는 종래 선행기술문헌에 있어 대한민국 등록특허 제10-1742530호 및 제10-1807287호 등을 참조할 수 있다.
본 발명은 상술한 종래의 문제점을 해소 및 이를 감안하여 안출된 것으로서, 귀금속, 특히 이리듐과 루테늄의 로딩량을 낮추면서도 우수한 촉매 활성과 안정성을 나타내는 이리듐 루테늄 기반 수전해용 산화극 촉매와 그 제조방법 및 이를 이용한 수전해 장치를 제공하는데 그 목적이 있다.
본 발명은 소량의 도펀트를 도입하여 촉매 내 이리듐과 루테늄의 조성 분포에 변화를 주어 공동 돌기 구조를 가지는 헤테로 구조를 구현하는 이리듐 루테늄 기반 수전해용 산화극 촉매와 그 제조방법 및 이를 이용한 수전해 장치를 제공하는데 그 목적이 있다.
본 발명은 도펀트에 의해 나노 스케일에서의 조성이 조절된 이리듐 루테늄 헤테로 공동 가지 구조 나노입자를 통해 수전해 전극에서 산소발생반응(OER)을 촉진할 수 있도록 하며, 산성(acidic) 환경에서의 산소발생반응(OER)에 대한 전기 촉매적 고효율과 고안정성을 갖도록 하는 이리듐 루테늄 기반 수전해용 산화극 촉매와 그 제조방법 및 이를 이용한 수전해 장치를 제공하는데 그 목적이 있다.
본 발명은 금속 전구체를 포함하는 용액을 이용한 용매열 반응을 통하여 간단하게 대량으로 제조할 수 있는 이리듐 루테늄 기반 수전해용 산화극 촉매와 그 제조방법 및 이를 이용한 수전해 장치를 제공하는데 그 목적이 있다.
상기의 목적을 달성하기 위한 본 발명에 따른 이리듐 루테늄 기반 수전해용 산화극 촉매는, 입자 내 서로 다른 상이 인접해 있는 헤테로 구조를 갖되, 상기 입자 내 서로 다른 상은 이리듐과 루테늄이며, 금속황화물(MxS)이 전구체로 사용되어 합성되고, 전이금속 원소가 도펀트로 도입된 것을 특징으로 한다.
여기에서, 상기 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매는, 나노 선인장 모양의 나노입자를 갖는 구성일 수 있다.
또한, 상기의 목적을 달성하기 위한 본 발명에 따른 이리듐 루테늄 기반 수전해용 산화극 촉매 제조방법은, 전이금속 원소를 도펀트로 도입하여 전구체의 환원 속도 조절을 통해 합성되는 입자 내 서로 다른 상이 인접해 있는 헤테로 구조를 갖도록 제조하되, 입자 내 서로 다른 상은 이리듐과 루테늄인 것을 특징으로 한다.
또한, 상기의 목적을 달성하기 위한 본 발명에 따른 이리듐 루테늄 기반 수전해용 산화극 촉매 제조방법은, (A) 헤테로 구조를 갖는 나노입자의 합성에 사용하기 위한 전구체를 구비하는 단계; (B) 전구체와 전이금속 원소를 도펀트로 사용한 합성을 통해 헤테로 구조를 갖는 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매를 제조하는 단계;를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 한다.
또한, 상기의 목적을 달성하기 위한 본 발명에 따른 수전해 장치는, 이리듐 루테늄 기반 수전해용 산화극 촉매로 제작한 산소발생전극을 포함하거나 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매 제조방법에 의해 제조되는 산화극 촉매로 제작한 산소발생전극을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 한다.
이와 더불어, 본 발명에 있어서는 각 카테고리별 목적 달성을 위한 더욱 다양한 실시 유형들이 존재한다 할 것이며, 이하에서 이러한 다양한 실시 유형들을 기술 및 보다 구체적으로 설명하기로 한다.
본 발명에 따르면, 도펀트의 산화 환원 반응을 통하여 촉매 내 조성 변화가 포함된 산소발생반응(Oxygen Evolution Reaction, OER)에 있어 높은 활성과 안정성을 보여주는 산화극 촉매를 제공할 수 있으며, 이러한 산화극 촉매는 도펀트의 산화 환원 전위에 따라 촉매 내 금속의 조성 분포 변화가 나타나는 것으로서 이를 통해 촉매 활성과 안정성을 향상시킬 수 있는 유용함을 달성할 수 있다.
본 발명에 따르면, 원하는 금속 분포를 지닌 공동 구조를 가지면서 돌기 구조를 가지기 때문에 산소 발생 성능이 높으며 강한 산성(acidic)에 대한 안정성을 포함하여 양성자 이동 막 수전해 시스템에 유용하게 활용될 수 있으며, 수전해용 산화극 촉매에 대해 금속전구체를 포함하는 용액을 이용한 용매열 반응을 통하여 간단하게 대량으로 제조할 수 있는 유용함을 달성할 수 있다.
본 발명에 따르면, 도펀트에 의해 나노 스케일에서의 조성이 조절된 이리듐 루테늄 헤테로 공동 가지 구조 나노입자의 형성을 통해 수전해 전극에서 산소발생반응(OER)을 촉진 및 성능을 높일 수 있고, 산성(acidic) 환경에서의 산소발생반응(OER)에 대한 전기 촉매적 고효율과 고안정성을 갖게 하는 유용함을 달성할 수 있다.

본 발명자들은 전이금속 이온이 여러 가지의 산화수를 가지는 경향이 있고, 다른 금속 전구체의 환원 속도를 조절해준다는 점을 발견하였다. 전이금속 이온과 이리듐 및 루테늄 전구체 간의 산화 환원 반응은 나노입자 내에서 이리듐과 루테늄의 조성 분포 조절이 가능하게 하였다. 이러한 조성 분포 조절은 산화 전위에서 매우 우수한 산소발생반응(OER)의 성능을 보이는 동시에 지속적인 산소발생반응(OER) 중에도 안정한 결과를 보여준다.
즉, 본 발명은 도펀트에 의해 나노 스케일에서의 조성이 조절된 이리듐 루테늄 기반 헤테로 공동 가지 구조 나노입자의 수전해 음극에서 산소발생반응(OER)을 촉진하는 수전해용 산화극 촉매 및 그 제조기술에 관한 것이며, 특히 산성(酸性; acidic) 환경에서의 산소발생반응(OER)에 대한 전기 촉매적 고효율과 고안정성을 가지는 촉매 및 그 제조기술과 이를 이용하는 수전해장치로의 응용을 제안한다.
이에, 본 발명에서는 전이금속을 도펀트로 이용하여 루테늄과 이리듐 산화물이 인접하여 헤테로 계면을 갖는 고활성 및 고안정성을 가지는 산화극 촉매 및 전이금속 이온이 도핑된 이리듐 루테늄(RuIr) 나노 선인장 모양의 산화극 촉매 제조기술과 이를 이용하는 수전해장치를 제안한다.
본 발명에서는 금속황화물(MxS)을 전구체로 이용하여 간편한 용매열 반응을 통하여 공동 가지 구조를 구현한다. 이렇게 제조된 촉매는 수전해시 산소발생반응(OER)에 대한 장시간 안정성 및 내구성뿐만 아니라 낮은 과전압(overpotential) 및 타펠 기울기(Tafel slope)를 가지는 산화극 촉매로서의 성능을 발휘한다. 더 나아가 양이온 교환막 수전해장치 제작을 통하여 상용 촉매와 비교하여 높은 활성을 안정적으로 보여주기에 산업적으로 활용 가능성이 큰 고효율 및 고안정성의 산화극 촉매 제조방법과 더불어 이를 이용하는 수전해장치를 제안한다.
이하의 실시를 통하여 본 발명을 더욱 상세하게 설명한다. 단, 실시예는 본 발명을 예시하기 위한 것으로서 이들만으로 본 발명의 범위가 한정되지 않는다 할 것이다.
본 발명에 따른 이리듐 루테늄 기반 수전해용 산화극 촉매는 입자 내 서로 다른 상이 인접해 있는 헤테로 구조를 갖되, 상기 입자 내 서로 다른 상은 이리듐과 루테늄이며, 더욱 바람직하게는 금속황화물(MxS)이 전구체로 사용되어 합성되고 전이금속 원소가 도펀트로 도입되는 구성일 수 있다.
본 발명의 전체에서 금속황화물(MxS)은 공동 구조와 돌기 구조를 동시에 가지는 수전해용 촉매를 제조하기 위한 전구체이다.
상기 금속황화물(MxS)에 있어 M은 전이금속 양이온을 의미하고, 상기 S는 황 음이온을 의미한다. 상기 MxS는 외형이 나노 육각판 또는 팔면체 형태일 수 있고, 결정구조가 면심 입방 구조(Face Centered Cubic lattice; FCC) 또는 조밀 육방 격자 구조(Hexagonal Close Packed lattice; HCP)일 수 있다.
상기 금속황화물(MxS)은 Cu2S, Cu1.94S, Cu1.8S, Cu1.75S, CoS, Co9S8, Co3S4의 화학식으로 나타낼 수 있으며, 이들 중에서 선택된 적어도 하나 또는 그 이상이 사용될 수 있다.
이하에서는 본 발명에 따른 이리듐 루테늄 기반 수전해용 산화극 촉매의 제조방법과 더불어 다양한 특성분석을 설명하기로 하며, 이를 이용한 수전해 장치에 대해서도 기술하기로 한다.
(1) 산화극 촉매의 제조
1) 금속황화물(MxS)의 합성
금속황화물(MxS)은 이리듐 루테늄 기반의 헤테로 공동 가지 구조 나노입자 합성에 사용된다.
일 예로서, 황화구리 나노 육각판이 사용될 수 있는데, 이는 Cu1.94S의 화학식으로 표현되는 것으로서, 상기 황화구리 나노 육각판은 하기 이리듐 루테늄 기반의 헤테로 공동 가지 구조 나노입자를 합성하기 위한 전구체로 사용된다.
도 1에서는 상기 황화구리 나노 육각판의 외형을 보여주고 있고, 도 2에서는 상기 황화구리 나노 육각판의 결정구조를 보여주고 있다.
구체적으로, Cu1.94S의 화학식으로 표현되는 황화구리 나노 육각판을 합성하여 제조하였다.
여기에서, 상기 금속황화물(MxS)은 필요에 따라 Cu2S, Cu1.8S, Cu1.75S 등의 화학식을 갖는 구리계 황화물 뿐만 아니라 CoS, Co9S8, Co3S4의 화학식을 갖는 코발트계 황화물을 합성할 수 있다.
(제조예 1) Cu1.94S의 황화구리 나노 육각판 합성
사이아나이드화 구리(CuSCN) 24.3mg(0.2mmol)을 정량하여 100mL 반응용기에 넣고 올레일아민(oleylamine) 10mL를 추가하여 녹인 후, 아르곤 분위기 및 140℃에서 30분 동안 반응시켜 Cu1.94S 나노 육각판을 얻었다. 합성된 Cu1.94S이 분산된 반응결과물에 톨루엔과 메탄올 20mL를 추가한 후 원심분리를 이용하여 반응결과물(Cu1.94S)을 가라앉힌다. 이후 상등액을 버린 후 가라앉은 입자를 건조시켜 분말 형태의 Cu1.94S를 얻었다.
여기에서, 상기 금속황화물(MxS)은 상술한 방법을 이용한 합성을 통해 Cu2S, Cu1.8S, Cu1.75S의 화학식을 갖는 구리계 황화물을 합성할 수도 있다.
2) 이리듐 루테늄 기반 공동 돌기 구조의 산화극 촉매 제조
(실시예 1) Mn 도펀트를 이용한 이리듐 루테늄(RuIr) 기반 공동 돌기 구조의 촉매 제조
Cu1.94S(금속황화물) 20mg, ruthenium(III) acetylacetonate 298.7mg(0.15mmol), iridium(III) acetylacetonate 73.4mg(0.075mmol), manganese(III) acetylacetonate 3.5mg(0.01mmol)을 정량하여 100mL 반응용기에 넣되 올레일아민(oleylamine) 10mL를 추가하고 진공 분위기 및 80℃에서 강하게 교반시켜 녹인 후, 다시 아르곤 분위기 및 240℃에서 1시간 동안 반응시켜 망간이 도핑된 RuIr 산화극 촉매를 제조하였다. 즉, 나노 선인장 모양의 촉매(Mn doped RuIr nanocactus; Mn-RuIr NCT)를 얻었다.
이렇게 합성된 Mn-RuIr NCT이 분산된 반응결과물에 톨루엔과 메탄올 20mL를 추가한 후 원심분리를 이용하여 Mn-RuIr NCT를 가라앉힌다. 이후 상등액을 버린 후 가라앉은 입자를 건조시켜 분말 형태의 Mn-RuIr NCT를 얻었다.
여기에서, 상기 금속황화물(MxS) : ruthenium acetylacetonate : iridium acetylacetonate : 전이금속물 = 0.5~1 : 7~15 : 1.5~4 : 0.1~0.3의 중량비 범위 내에서 배합하여 사용할 수 있다.
(실시예 2) Fe, Ni, Co 도펀트를 이용한 이리듐 루테늄 기반 공동 돌기 구조의 산화극 촉매 제조
망간 전구체를 대체하여 iron(III) acetylacetonate, nickel(II) acetylacetonate, cobalt(III) acetylacetonate를 망간 전구체와 동량으로 사용하였고, 상기 실시예 1의 방법을 이용하여 전이금속 원소가 도핑된 Fe-RuIr NCT, Ni-RuIr NCT, Co-RuIr NCT를 각각 제조하였다.
(비교예 1) 다량의 Mn 도펀트를 이용한 이리듐 루테늄 기반 공동 돌기 구조의 산화극 촉매 제조
망간 전구체의 양을 5배 늘려 사용한 것을 제외하고는 상기 실시예 1의 방법을 이용하여 H-Mn-RuIr NCT를 제조하였다.
(비교예 2) 도펀트를 제외한 이리듐 루테늄 기반 공동 돌기 구조의 산화극 촉매 제조
망간 전구체를 제외하고는 상기 실시예 1의 방법을 이용하여 도펀트가 도핑되지 않은 RuIr NCT를 제조하였다.
(비교예 3) 금속황화물(MxS)을 전구체로 이용하지 않은 이리듐 루테늄 합금 나노 촉매 제조
Iridium(III) chloride 8.9mg(0.03mmol), ruthenium(III) chloride 24.9mg(0.12mmol), hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide 528.4mg(1.45mmol)을 정량하여 100mL 반응용기에 넣고 무수에탄올(anhydrous ethanol) 40mL를 추가하여 강하게 교반시켜 녹인 후, 시린지 펌프(syringe pump)를 이용하여 0.2M의 수소화붕소나트륨(sodium borohydride) 9mL를 dropwise 방식으로 첨가한다. 12시간 반응 후 합성된 RuIr NPs가 분산된 반응결과물에 에탄올 20mL와 증류수 15mL를 추가한 후 원심분리를 이용하여 RuIr NPs를 가라앉힌다. 이후 상등액을 버린 후 가라앉은 입자를 건조시켜 분말 형태의 RuIr NPs를 얻었다.
(2) 산화극 촉매의 제조 이후 기본 특성분석
위와 같은 방식으로 합성 제조된 물질들의 기본적인 특성분석을 시행하였으며, 대표적인 전이금속인 Mn, Fe, Ni, Co가 도핑된 Mn-RuIr NCT, Fe-RuIr NCT, Ni-RuIr NCT, Co-RuIr NCT와 도펀트가 도핑이 되지 않은 RuIr NCT, 및 다량의 망간이 도핑된 H-Mn-RuIr NCT에 대해 X-ray 회절 분석법과 투과전자현미경(Transmission Electron Microscopy; TEM)을 이용하여 물성 분석을 진행하였다.
도 3을 참조하면, 합성된 나노 촉매들은 XRD에서 HCP(Hexagonal close-packed; 육방조밀구조) 구조의 루테늄 peaks가 우세하게 나타남을 보여주고 있으며 결정에서의 큰 차이는 보이지 않는다.
도 4를 참조하면, 투과전자현미경(TEM) 이미지에서 나노 촉매들의 형태는 모두 나노 선인장 모양을 보여주고 있으며, 도펀트의 유무 및 종류에 영향을 받지 않는 것으로 판단된다.
반면에, 망간 도펀트의 양을 5배 늘린 H-Mn-RuIr NCT에서는 X-ray 회절 분석에서 MnO 상이 관찰되고 있어 산소발생반응(OER) 활성에는 부정적인 영향을 준다고 할 수 있다.
도 5의 a), b) 및 c)는 합성 제조된 RuIr NCT, Mn-RuIr NCT 및 H-Mn-RuIr NCT 각각의 고해상도 투과전자현미경[High resolution TEM(HRTEM)] 이미지와 그 고속 푸리에 변환 패턴[Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) pattern]을 나타낸 것으로서, HRTEM 이미지에서의 하얀색 표시는 metallic Ru의 격자 줄무늬를 명확하게 나타내고 있다.
도 5의 c)에서 주황색 표시는 MnO의 (222) 평면에 대응하는 0.127nm의 격자 줄무늬를 나타내고 있다. 이러한 결과는 앞선 X-ray 회절 분석과 일치한다.
망간 도펀트의 유무에 따른 합성 메커니즘의 변화를 관찰하기 위해 망간 도펀트 유무에 따른 반응 시간별 입자 형성을 TEM 이미지, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy(EDX) 분석, X-ray 회절법을 이용하여 관찰하였다.
도 6과 도 7은 각각 RuIr NCT와 Mn-RuIr NCT의 반응 시간별 TEM 이미지를 나타내고, 도 8은 반응 시간별 EDX 분석 결과 도표를 나타내고, 도 9와 10은 각각 RuIr NCT와 Mn-RuIr NCT의 반응 시간별 X-ray 회절 패턴을 나타낸다.
초기 3분의 반응시간이 지났을 때, 망간 도펀트 유무에 상관없이 전구체로 이용한 Cu1.94S 나노 육각판만 관찰되었다.
반응시간 5분이 지났을 때, TEM 이미지에서 섬 형태의 입자가 Cu1.94S 나노 육각판 표면에 관찰되며, X-ray 회절법과 EDX 분석 결과에 의하면 루테늄의 조성이 이리듐에 비해 높은 상으로 나타남을 확인할 수 있다.
반응시간이 10분 이후의 경우, 망간 도펀트가 있는 경우 Ir의 비율이 늘어나는 속도가 빠르며 망간 도펀트 또한 EDX 분석에서 관찰되고 있다.
이러한 결과는 망간 도펀트가 도핑되면서 이리듐의 환원을 촉진시키는 것으로 판단된다. 도 6에서는 망간 도펀트와 이리듐 전구체 간의 산화 환원 반응을 제시하고 있다. 표준 환원전위 차이에 의해 Mn3+ 이온으로부터 Ir3+ 이온으로 전자가 전달되며 Mn4+ 생성과 동시에 이리듐의 환원을 촉진한다. 이후 생성된 Mn4+ 이온은 고온의 환원 환경에 의해 Mn3+ 이온으로 환원되며 Ir3+ 이온 환원을 촉진시키는 반복적인 산화 환원 반응에 참여하게 된다.
이와 같은 메커니즘을 통하여 망간 도펀트는 이리듐과 루테늄의 혼합도를 높이며, 최종 결과물은 망간 도펀트가 도입된 경우(Mn-RuIr NCT)가 망간 도펀트가 없는 경우(RuIr NCT) 보다 루테늄과 이리듐이 상대적으로 섞여 있는 조성 분포를 보여주는데, 이는 도 11을 참조할 수 있다.
그리고, 도펀트를 이용한 입자 내 조성 분포의 미세조정은 루테늄의 표면 노출도를 조절할 수 있는 새로운 방법론을 제시하며, 이러한 조성 분포의 미세조정은 산소발생반응(OER)의 활성도와 안정성을 부여할 수 있다.
위의 Mn 도펀트를 이용한 조성 분포 조절된 나노입자(Mn-RuIr NCT)는 전기화학적 산화를 통하여 헤테로 구조를 구현하였다.
전기화학적으로 산화된 입자의 X-ray 광전자 분광법(X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS)를 통해 Mn-RuIr NCT 및 RuIr NCT의 화학적 결합 상태를 확인할 수 있다.
도 12와 13은 각각 RuIr NCT와 Mn-RuIr NCT의 초기, 전기화학적 활성(activation) 이후, 시간대전위차법 측정 이후의 Ru과 Ir XPS 결과를 나타낸 것이다.
도면 12와 13을 참고하면, RuIr NCT와 Mn-RuIr NCT는 Ru 3p와 Ir 4f 영역 내에서 0가, 3가 및 4가의 코어 레벨 피크를 나타내고 있다. 전기화학적 산화 이전의 시료의 경우 두 시료 모두 0가의 Ru 3p 피크와 0가의 Ir 4f 피크 및 약간의 3+와 4+의 Ir 4f 피크를 나타내고 있다.
도 14를 참고하면, 전기화학적 산화 이후 Mn-RuIr NCT에서의 Ru 3p의 산화는 RuIr NCT보다 느리며 Ir 4f의 산화는 빠른 결과를 보여주고 있다. 이로 인해 12시간의 전기화학적 산화 이후, Mn-RuIr NCT는 활성이 높은 낮은 산화수의 Ru의 비율이 높음과 동시에 안정성이 높은 4+ Ir이 많은 헤테로 구조를 가지게 된다. 반면 RuIr NCT는 Ru의 산화가 빠르며 상대적으로 Ir의 산화가 느린 것으로 나타난다.
도 15의 a)와 c)는 10mA/cm-2에서 6시간의 연속적인 시간대전위차법 측정 이후의 RuIr NCT 및 Mn-RuIr NCT 각각의 HRTEM 이미지와 그 FFT pattern을 나타낸 것으로서, Mn-RuIr은 시간대전위차법 측정 이후에도 metallic Ru의 (002) 평면에 대응하는 0.217 nm의 격자 줄무늬가 표면에 존재하며 추가로 IrO2의 (111) 평면에 대응하는 0.224 nm의 격자 줄무늬가 인접하여 존재한다. 반면 RuIr NCT는 전체적으로 결정성을 가지지 못하는 비결정의 입자를 가지고 있다.
또한, 도 15의 b)와 d)는 6시간의 연속적인 시간대전위차법 측정 이후의 RuIr NCT 및 Mn-RuIr NCT 각각의 EDX mapping 이미지를 나타내며, 여기서 두 촉매의 두께가 차이가 남을 알 수 있다.
또한, 도 15의 e)을 참고하면, 입자의 두께는 Mn-RuIr NCT는 평균적으로 ~1nm 내외의 감소 값을 가지지만 RuIr NCT는 ~8nm 내외의 감소 값을 지니며, 이는 많은 양의 Ru이 시간대전위차법 측정 중 녹아 나간 것을 의미한다.
또한, 도 15의 f)에서는 EDX 분석에서의 Ru과 Ir의 원소 비율을 나타내며, Mn-RuIr NCT는 1:2의 비율로 잘 유지되는 반면 RuIr NCT는 Ru이 상대적으로 빨리 녹아나가 1:1의 비율로 바뀐 것을 알 수 있다.
도 16는 산소발생반응(OER) 6시간의 시간대전위차법 측정 동안 녹아나간 금속의 양을 Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS) 측정을 통하여 측정한 결과를 나타낸 것으로서, RuIr NCT의 Ru 녹아나간 양이 Mn-RuIr NCT보다 1.75배 많은 결과를 나타내고 있다. 이러한 분석을 바탕으로 Mn dopant의 도입이 Ru의 녹아나감을 줄여주며 Mn-RuIr NCT의 OER 안정성이 높은 이유가 Ru이 안정적으로 유지되기 때문임을 증명한다.
도 17의 a)와 b)는 10mA/cm-2에서 6시간의 연속적인 시간대전위차법 측정 이후의 RuIr NCT 및 Mn-RuIr NCT 각각의 X-ray 회절 패턴을 나타낸 것으로서, Mn-RuIr NCT는 metallic Ru의 XRD peak를 보이나 RuIr NCT는 broad한 peak를 보이며 이는 상기 HRTEM 이미지 결과와 일치한다. 상기 XPS, HRTEM, ICP-MS, X-ray 회절 패턴을 종합한 결과는 Mn-RuIr NCT가 OER 활성과 안정성에 있어 RuIr NCT보다 향상된 것을 입증한다.
(3) 산소발생반응(OER) 활성 반전지 평가
언급한 바와 같이 망간 도펀트를 이용하여 입자 내 루테늄과 이리듐의 조성 분포를 미세 조정하여 산소발생반응(OER)의 활성과 안정성을 높이고자 하였으며 반전지에서 전기화학적 특성평가를 진행하였다.
전기화학적 특성분석은 3개의 전극을 가진 하프 셀 시스템을 구성하여 실행하였다. 상기 3개의 전극은 작동 전극(Working Electrode)인 유리 카본 전극(Glassy carbon electrode, GCE), 기준 전극(Reference Electrode)인 포화 염화은 전극(saturated Ag/AgCl electrode), 및 상대 전극(Counter Electrode)인 탄소봉(graphite rod)이 사용되었다. 또한, 촉매가 코팅된 GCE를 사용한 회전 원판 전극(Rotating disc electrode)를 이용하여 평가되었다. 모든 전기 화학 평가에는 CHI 전기 화학 계측기(CHI potentiostat)가 사용되었다. 산솨발생반응(OER) 측정은 2500rpm의 회전 속도에서 측정되었으며 0.1 M HClO4 용액에서 수행하였다. 전압은 가역적 수소전극(Reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) 대비로 전환하며 수용액의 저항을 보정하여 분극 곡선을 도시하였다.
도 18의 a)는 3전극 시스템으로 측정된 RuIr NCT, Mn-RuIr NCT, H-Mn-RuIr NCT, RuIr NPs, 상용 Ir/C, 상용 IrO2, 상용 RuO2 각각의 OER 분극 곡선을 나타내고, b)는 10 및 100mA/cm-2의 전류밀도에서 이들의 과전압을 비교한 그래프를 나타내고, c)는 이들의 타펠 기울기(Tafel plot)를 나타내고, d)는 190mV 과전압에서 이들을 대상으로 한 나이퀴스트 플롯(Nyquist plots)을 나타내고, e)는 10 mA cm-2 전류 밀도에서의 시간대전위차법 곡선(chronopotentiometric curve)을 각각 나타낸다.
도 18의 a) 및 b)를 참고하면, 2%의 Mn 도핑된 Mn-RuIr NCT는 10mA/cm-2에서 198mV의 매우 낮은 과전압을 보인다. 반면 Mn 도펀트가 없는 RuIr NCT와 14%의 Mn이 도핑된 H-Mn-RuIr NCT, RuIr NPs는 각각 10mA/cm-2의 전류밀도에서 217mV, 225mV 및 232mV의 과전압을 나타내므로 적절한 양의 Mn 도핑과 나노 선인장 모양에 의해 OER 성능에 긍정적인 개선이 이루어짐을 확인할 수 있다. 또한, 상용 Ir/C는 10mA/cm-2의 전류밀도에서 302mV의 높은 과전압을 보이는바 Ru의 도입이 산소발생반응(OER) 성능 개선에 큰 기여를 한 것을 확인할 수 있다. RuIr NCT, Mn-RuIr NCT, H-Mn-RuIr NCT, RuIr NPs, 상용 Ir/C의 100mA/cm-2에서의 과전압은 각각 313, 247, 346, 326 및 413mV로 Mn-RuIr NCT가 월등하게 향상된 산소발생반응(OER) 성능을 보여준다.
도 18의 c)는 도 17의 a)의 분극 곡선에 대한 타펠 기울기를 나타내는 것으로서, RuIr NCT, Mn-RuIr NCT, H-Mn-RuIr NCT, RuIr NPs, 상용 Ir/C, 상용 IrO2, 상용 RuO2의 타펠 기울기가 각각 63, 45, 93, 48, 73, 103, 101mV/dec-1로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 적절한 Mn 도핑은 보다 높은 반응속도 및 동역학(kinetics)을 유도함을 입증한다.
도 18의 d)는 RuIr NCT, Mn-RuIr NCT, H-Mn-RuIr NCT, RuIr NPs, 상용 Ir/C, 상용 IrO2, 상용 RuO2의 나이퀴스트 플롯을 나타내는 것으로서, 피팅은 삽도의 회로를 사용하여 결정하였다. 모든 플롯은 1개의 반원으로 이루어진다. 모든 경우 20~30Ω 근처에서 유사한 전해질 저항(solution resistance, Rs)을 보였으나 2% Mn 도핑을 도입한 경우 전하 이동 저항(charge transfer resistance, Rct)이 감소하였다. 이는 적정량의 Mn 도핑이 전하 이동을 촉진하여 산소발생반응(OER) 성능 개선에 기여하였다는 것을 보여준다.
나아가, 촉매의 내구성은 전기분해를 수행하는 데 있어 매우 중요한 요소이기에 가속 내구 시험(accelerated durability test)과 시간대전위차법 시험(chronopotentiometric test)를 수행하였다. 시간대전위차법 측정은 GCE 대신, 탄소 종이 전극(carbon paper electrode, CPE, 1cm × 1cm)을 사용하였다.
도 18의 e)를 참고하면, Mn-RuIr NCT는 10mA/cm-2에서 측정한 시간대전위차법 시험에서 높은 내구성을 보인다. 초기 전압과 비교할 때에 180시간 경과 후 40mV의 약간의 열화가 나타났으나 연속적으로 산소 발생이 가능하였다.
또한, 도 19를 참고하면, 초기 상태와 비교했을 때에 Mn-RuIr NCT는 1000번째 사이클 후 10mA/cm-2에서 과전압이 198mV에서 216mV로 증가하는 분극 곡선의 이동이 나타났으나, 이는 RuIr NCT와 상용 Ir/C와 비교했을 때 극히 작은, 무시할 수 있는 수준으로 연속적인 순환 전압전류측정(cyclic voltammetry) 과정에서 Mn-RuIr NCT가 높은 구조적 안정성을 가지는 것을 알 수 있다. 따라서, Mn-RuIr NCT는 기존 상용 촉매와 비교하여 OER에서 높은 안정성과 내구성을 갖는다.
(4) 양이온 교환막 수전해 장치(PEMWE)의 제작 및 성능 평가
추가로 실질적인 응용 가능성을 확인하고자 양이온 교환막 수전해 장치(Proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer, PEMWE) 제작과 성능 평가를 진행하였다. 상기 Mn-RuIr NCT를 이용하여 제조한 양이온 교환막 수전해 장치(PEMWE)의 구조는 도 20의 a)에서 보여주고 있다.
도 20의 a)를 참조하면, 양이온 교환막 수전해 장치(PEMWE)는 티타늄 플레이트, PTFE gasket, 티타늄 가스확산층, 수소발생전극, 분리막층, 산소발생전극, 탄소 가스확산층, PTFE gasket, 그래파이트 플레이트를 포함하는 구성일 수 있다.
상기 수소발생전극은 상용 Pt/C를 스프레이 분사를 통하여 제작하였으며, 촉매, ionomer solution, isopropyl alcohol, 증류수 등의 구성으로, 촉매가 함유된 슬러리를 제조하여 스프레이건을 이용해 기판 위에 분사하는 방식이다. 단위면적당 올라간 촉매의 귀금속 양은 0.8mgptcm-2이다.
상기 산소발생전극은 Mn-RuIr NCT 및 상용 IrO2를 스프레이 분사를 통하여 제작하였으며, 촉매, ionmer solution, isopropyl alcohol, 증류수 등의 구성으로, 촉매가 함유된 슬러리를 제조하여 스프레이건을 이용해 기판 위에 분사하는 방식이다. 단위면적당 올라간 촉매의 귀금속 양은 1mgIr+Rucm-2이며, Ir과 Ru은 1:1 비율이다. Mn-RuIr NCT의 PEMWE 평가를 위해 Mn-RuIr NCT와 IrO2 double layered 구조의 박막을 제작하였다. 상용 IrO2는 동일한 귀금속 사용량을 계산하여 박막을 제작하였다.
이와 같은 양이온 교환막 수전해 장치(PEMWE)의 성능 평가에는 10A 전류 증폭기가 장착된 전기 화학 계측기(Metrohm Autolab PGSTAT302N)를 사용하였다. PEMWE는 80도, 상압, 15 mL min-1 증류수 유량에서 구동하였다.
도 20의 b)는 PEMWE 시스템으로 측정된 Mn-RuIr NCT와 상용 IrO2를 6:4로 존재하는 double layered 촉매과 상용 IrO2 각각의 100mA/cm-2의 전류밀도에서 10시간 시간대전위차법 시험 이전 및 이후의 PEMWE cell 분극 곡선을 나타내고, c)는 100 및 1000mA/cm-2의 전류밀도에서 이들의 cell 전압을 비교한 그래프와 1.42V와 1.70V에서의 무게대비 활성(mass activity)를 나타내며, d)는 100mA/cm-2의 전류밀도에서의 시간대전위차법 곡선을 나타낸 것이다.
도 20을 참고하면, Mn-RuIr NCT와 상용 IrO2의 double layered 구조는 상용 IrO2에 비해 높은 활성을 보여주는 것으로 나타난다. 또한, 10시간의 시간대전위차법 시험 이후에도 안정적으로 성능을 보여준다. 상용 IrO2 대비 Ir의 사용량은 50% 감소하고 대신 Ru을 이용하였다. Ru은 Ir대비 10배 이상 저렴한 금속으로 이러한 결과는 PEMWE 상용화에 크게 이여 할 수 있는 결과로 볼 수 있다.
상기 OER 분극 곡선, 가속 내구 시험 및 시간대전위차법 시험, 더 나아가 수전해 장치 제작 및 성능 결과에 기초할 때, Mn-RuIr NCT가 OER에 있어 고활성 및 고안정성의 촉매로 작용할 수 있고 상용 촉매로 응용 가능함을 알 수 있다.
즉, 본 발명에서는 금속황화물(MxS)을 전구체로 사용하고 전이금속 원소를 도핑시키는 방식을 통해 이리듐과 루테늄의 로딩량을 낮추면서도 우수한 활성과 고안정성을 나타내는 산소발생 성능의 산화극 촉매를 제조 및 수전해장치로의 응용이 가능함을 확인하였으며, 간단한 방식으로 산화극 촉매를 대량 생산할 수 있는 장점을 제공할 수 있다.
이상에서 설명한 실시예는 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예를 설명한 것에 불과하고 이러한 실시예에 극히 한정되는 것은 아니며, 본 발명의 기술적 사상과 청구범위 내에서 이 기술분야의 당해업자에 의하여 다양한 수정과 변형 또는 단계의 치환 등이 이루어질 수 있다 할 것이며, 이는 본 발명의 기술적 권리범위에 속한다 할 것으로서 본 발명의 구체적인 보호 범위는 첨부된 특허 청구 범위에 의하여 명확해질 것이다.
본 발명은 도펀트를 도입하여 촉매 내 조성 분포를 변화시킴으로써 헤테로 구조를 구현할 수 있도록 하며 산소발생반응(OER)의 높은 활성과 안정성을 갖도록 하는 이리듐 루테늄 기반의 수전해용 산화극 촉매와 그 제조방법 및 이를 이용한 수전해 장치에 관한 것으로서, 산업상 이용 가능성이 높은 기술에 관한 것이다.
Claims (21)
- 입자 내 서로 다른 상이 인접해 있는 헤테로 구조를 갖되, 상기 입자 내 서로 다른 상은 이리듐과 루테늄이며,금속황화물(MxS)이 전구체로 사용되어 합성되고, 전이금속 원소가 도펀트로 도입된 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매.
- 제 1항에 있어서,상기 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매는,나노 선인장 모양의 나노입자를 갖는 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매.
- 제 1항에 있어서,상기 금속황화물(MxS)은,M이 전이금속 양이온이고, S는 황 음이온이며,상기 M이 갖는 전이금속은 Mn, Fe, Ni, Co, Cr, Cu, Zn 중에서 선택된 적어도 하나를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매.
- 제 1항에 있어서,상기 금속황화물(MxS)은,M이 전이금속 양이온이고, S는 황 음이온이며,외형이 나노 육각판 또는 팔면체 형태이고, 결정이 면심 입방 구조(Face Centered Cubic lattice; FCC) 또는 조밀 육방 격자 구조(Hexagonal Close Packed lattice; HCP)인 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매.
- 제 1항에 있어서,상기 금속황화물(MxS)은,Cu2S, Cu1.94S, Cu1.8S, Cu1.75S, CoS, Co9S8, Co3S4 중에서 선택된 하나 또는 2종 이상인 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매.
- 제 1항에 있어서,상기 전이금속 원소는 Mn, Fe, Ni, Co, Cr, Cu, Zn 중에서 선택된 하나 또는 2종 이상인 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매.
- 전이금속 원소를 도펀트로 도입하여 전구체의 환원 속도 조절을 통해 합성되는 입자 내 서로 다른 상이 인접해 있는 헤테로 구조를 갖도록 제조하되,입자 내 서로 다른 상은 이리듐과 루테늄인 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매 제조방법.
- (A) 헤테로 구조를 갖는 나노입자의 합성에 사용하기 위한 전구체를 구비하는 단계;(B) 전구체와 전이금속 원소를 도펀트로 사용한 합성을 통해 헤테로 구조를 갖는 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매를 제조하는 단계; 를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매 제조방법.
- 제 8항에 있어서,(C) (B)단계의 결과물을 분말화하는 단계; 를 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매 제조방법.
- 제 7항 또는 제 8항에 있어서,상기 전구체는,금속황화물(MxS)인 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매 제조방법.
- 제 10항에 있어서,상기 금속황화물(MxS)은,M이 전이금속 양이온이고, S는 황 음이온이며,상기 M이 갖는 전이금속은 Mn, Fe, Ni, Co, Cr, Cu, Zn 중에서 선택된 적어도 하나를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매 제조방법.
- 제 10항에 있어서,상기 금속황화물(MxS)은,M이 전이금속 양이온이고, S는 황 음이온이며,외형이 나노 육각판 또는 팔면체 형태이고, 결정이 면심 입방 구조(Face Centered Cubic lattice; FCC) 또는 조밀 육방 격자 구조(Hexagonal Close Packed lattice; HCP)인 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매 제조방법.
- 제 10항에 있어서,상기 금속황화물(MxS)은,Cu2S, Cu1.94S, Cu1.8S, Cu1.75S, CoS, Co9S8, Co3S4 중에서 선택된 하나 또는 2종 이상인 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매 제조방법.
- 제 9항에 있어서,상기 도펀트는 Mn, Fe, Ni, Co, Cr, Cu, Zn 중에서 선택된 하나 또는 2종 이상인 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매 제조방법.
- 제 8항에 있어서,상기 (A)단계에서는,(1) 사이아나이드화 구리(CuSCN)를 올레일아민(oleylamine)에 녹이는 단계;(2) (1)단계의 결과물을 아르곤 분위기 및 120~150℃의 온도 조건에서 20~40분 동안 반응시켜 구리계 금속황화물을 합성하는 단계;(3) (2)단계의 결과물인 합성된 구리계 금속황화물에 톨루엔과 메탄올을 추가한 후 원심분리를 이용하여 구리계 금속황화물을 가라앉히는 단계;(4) (3)단계의 결과물로부터 상등액을 버린 후 가라앉은 입자를 건조시켜 분말로 제조하는 단계; 로 전구체를 합성하여 구비하는 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매 제조방법.
- 제 15항에 있어서,상기 구리계 금속황화물은,Cu2S, Cu1.94S, Cu1.8S, Cu1.75S 중에서 어느 하나의 조성을 갖는 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매 제조방법.
- 제 8항에 있어서,상기 (B)단계에서는,(1) 금속황화물(MxS), ruthenium acetylacetonate, iridium acetylacetonate, 전이금속물을 올레일아민(oleylamine)과 함께 반응용기에 넣는 단계;(2) (1)단계의 결과물을 진공 분위기 및 70~90℃의 온도 조건에서 교반시키는 단계;(3) (2)단계의 결과물을 아르곤 분위기 및 220~260℃의 온도 조건에서 40~60분 동안 반응시켜 전이금속이 도핑된 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매를 얻어내는 단계; 를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매 제조방법.
- 제 17항에 있어서,상기 금속황화물(MxS) : ruthenium acetylacetonate : iridium acetylacetonate : 전이금속물 = 0.5~1 : 7~15 : 1.5~4 : 0.1~0.3의 중량비로 첨가되는 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매 제조방법.
- 제 17항에 있어서,상기 (1)에서의 전이금속물은,manganese acetylacetonate, iron acetylacetonate, nickel acetylacetonate, cobalt acetylacetonate, zinc acetylacetonate 중에서 선택된 어느 하나인 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해용 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매 제조방법.
- 청구항 1 내지 청구항 6에 의한 이리듐 루테늄 기반 수전해용 산화극 촉매로 제작한 산소발생전극을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해 장치.
- 청구항 7 내지 청구항 19에 의한 이리듐 루테늄 기반 산화극 촉매 제조방법에 의해 제조되는 산화극 촉매로 제작한 산소발생전극을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 수전해 장치.
