Description
MULTI PURPOSE URINAL MAT FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a urinal mat more particularly a urinal anti-splash mat configured to grip a surface of a urinal. BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
As known in the art, urinal mats are placed in the collection area of a urinal to counter splashing caused by a urinal stream.
South African patent number 2013/06569 entitled “URINAL ANTI-SPLASH MAT” in the name of Pieter Willem Oosthuizen (“Oosthuizen”) describes A urinal anti-splash mat comprising a mat base with at least two straight edges wherein the urinal mat fits in a urinal receptacle.
International patent application number WO 2015/088303 A1 entitled “URINAL MAT” in the name of RAMIREZ VELAZQUEZ, Edgardo (“RAMIREZ”) describes splash-prevention mat with sealed filaments and conical differences in level for urinals, which is composed of small filaments that prevent splashes of urine, thereby preventing the spread of diseases and,
also, the accumulation of fluids by virtue of the conical differences in level. This mat was produced in order to prevent the bad odour that arises through an accumulation of urine outside urinals, resulting from urine splashing against the walls of urinals and/or against residual liquids in urinals, by interrupting the fall of the liquid. In this way, the invention provides a more hygienic environment and prevents the spread of possible diseases.
South African patent number 2018/06309 entitled “BIODEGRADABLE PRODUCT” in the name of TAMP PRODUCTS CC relates to a biodegradable product and more particularly but not exclusively, to a biodegradable product including a fragrance composition released during use of the product.
The above disclosures relate to urinal mats, as known in the art which is placed in the collection area of a urinal and rely on gravity to be held in place.
This could be quite problematic as not all urinals have the same design and/or configuration. OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of this invention to provide a urinal mat which, at least partially, alleviates some of the above-mentioned difficulties.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In accordance with this invention there is provided a urinal mat comprising a base with apertures therethrough, a surface engager at a lower side of the base and cylindrical baffles protruding from an upper side of the base to assist to decelerate and disperse a urine stream as it collides with the baffles and apertures to allow the urine to flow through the base.
The base may be curved in order for better fluid flow between the upper side of the mat and a collection area.
The surface engager may be in the form of a suction cup or any other device which uses a vacuum to connect to a surface.
The base may be made of a biodegradable material and having a fragrance releasing composition therein.
The base may have the shape of a rectangle with rounded edges or be an oval or the like. The baffles may vary in length and at their free ends create a substantially flat plane which is spaced from the base.
The baffles may have an ornamental head at their free ends.
The apertures may be round however the invention is not limited in this regard.
The urinal mat may be used as a urinal mat, soap dish, car freshener, toilet freshener or the like the invention is not limited in this regard.
In accordance with this invention there is provided a mat comprising a base with apertures therethrough, a surface engager at a lower side of the base and cylindrical baffles protruding from an upper side of the base to support a bar of soap.
In accordance with this invention there is provided a mat comprising a base with apertures therethrough, a surface engager at a lower side of the base and cylindrical baffles protruding from an upper side of the base which releases a fragrance and is used as an air freshener.
In accordance with this invention there is provided a mat comprising a base with apertures therethrough, a surface engager at a lower side of the base and cylindrical baffles protruding from an upper side of the base to be used within a bowl of a toilet.
These and other features of the invention are described in more detail below.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
One embodiment of the invention is described below, by way of example only, with reference to the drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a urinal mat;
Figure 2 shows a bottom view of the urinal mat;
Figure 3 shows a side view of the urinal mat; and
Figure 4 shows an end view of the urinal mat.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS With reference to the drawings, a urinal mat is generally depicted by reference numeral 1 .
The urinal mat 1 includes a base 2 with apertures 3 therein, a surface engager in the form of a suction cup 4 forms part of a lower side 5 of the base 2.
In use, the urinal mat 1 is placed in a section of the collection area of a urinal (not shown).
The base 2 covers part of the collection area of the urinal and cylindrical baffles 6 protrude from an upper side 7 of the base 2 to assist in decelerating and to disperse a urine stream as it collides with the baffles 6. The apertures 3 allows the urine to flow through the base 2 to the collection area. The apertures 3 are circular with a radius larger than that of the baffles 6.
The base 2 is curved to allow for the suction cup 4 to make contact with the surface of a urinal (not shown) whilst simultaneously allowing the outer perimeter 8 of the base 2 to make contact with the surface. This will ensure good fluid flow from the upper side of the mat to the urinal’s surface. Good fluid flow is required at to not have any fluids such as urine which may cause odours or bad smells collect on a surface of the mat.
When viewed from above, the base 2 of the urinal mat 1 has the shape of a rectangle with rounded edges.
The baffles 6 vary in length to form a substantially flat plane spaced from the upper side 7 of the base 2. This allows for good drainage and assists in air circulation. The baffles 6 are flat at their free edge.
The suction cup 4 increases the effectiveness of the urinal mat 1 as it ensures correct positioning within the urinal. This shape of the urinal mat 1 assists in trapping odours in a cavity above the collection area underneath the base 2.
The base 2 is made of a biodegradable material which has a fragrance releasing composition therein. The urinal mat 1 can thus easily and safely be discarded once the fragrance composition is spent.
The urinal mat 1 does not need to be placed in the collection area of a urinal and the suction cup 4 can be utilised in order to orientate the urinal mat 1 against a substantially upright surface of the urinal with ease. In another embodiment the baffles 6 may have conical head formation in order to further reduce the amount of splashing. Rounded ends or ornamentation at the free edges may thus be used for aesthetic or functional purpose.
The apertures 3 is not limited to having a circular shape which has a radius larger than that of the baffles 6 and elongate or ornamental apertures could be used.
The baffles may have a shape, other than a flat edge at their free edge. Any shape which may allow for fluid flow towards the mat and inhibit flow from the mat may be incorporated.
It is in envisaged that incorporating the concept described herein to form part of all new urinal mats as it will ensure that the mat is secured to the surface of a urinal which it is used in.
The invention is not limited to using suction cups to engage with the surface of the urinal and any appropriate connector may be used. In a different embodiment there is provided for the mat to support a bar of soap or any other object which makes use of airflow to dry off, like a dishwashing sponge.
There is provided for the mat to release a fragrance and to be used as an air freshener. The fragrance may be released continuously or when a liquid comes into contact with the mat.
There is further provided for the mat to be used within a bowl of a toilet. The suction cup ensures that the mat stays in a desired place and orientation.
It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the invention is not limited to the precise details as described or shown herein and that many other embodiments are possible without departing from the scope of the invention.
