Definitions

  • Filter element for filtering viruses and/or bacteria from a fluid
  • the present invention relates to a filter element for filtering viruses and/or bacteria from a fluid, in particular from air and/or water, with a filter medium which has an adsorbent, in particular chemisorbent, on its filter medium surface, and a filter system for filtering air and/or or water.
  • the present invention also relates to a method for producing a filter element for filtering viruses and/or bacteria from a fluid, and the use of a material composition for filtering viruses and/or bacteria from a fluid.
  • Virus particles are particularly difficult to separate in terms of their size of 80-300 nm in relation to fibers in the 1000-5000 nm range.
  • a particle is separated mainly by the barrier effect of textile fibers. Due to this pure physisorption, particles such as viruses can get back into the air flow.
  • Filter fabrics for the filtration of viruses only physically adsorb the virus particles on the fiber surfaces. Since mostly inert fiber materials such as cellulose fibers or synthetic fibers based on polyester or polyolefins are used, the viruses or virus aerosols and bacteria on the fiber surfaces remain infectious.
  • infections with a more severe course of the disease can be triggered by the increased viral load.
  • a biofilm can form, which can lead to microorganisms breaking through into the filtered air.
  • a virus-adsorbing and antiviral effect is also ascribed to chitosan as a biopolymer.
  • EP 2 849 763 B1 describes the use of chitopolymers, in particular chitosan, in the treatment and prevention of corona virus diseases.
  • DE 3620168 A1 discloses a chemisorption filter for treating breathing air for people suffering from allergies

  • This adsorbent enables effective, irreversible chemisorption of viruses and/or bacteria on the filter medium surface, with the membrane of the viruses and/or bacteria also being broken up or dissolved by means of the at least one surfactant after chemisorption has taken place, and the viruses and/or bacteria thus being effectively in situ be inactivated.
  • the filter element according to the invention not only chemisorbs the viruses and/or bacteria from a fluid very effectively, but also inactivates them sustainably "in situ", so that - in contrast to only physisorbed microbiologically active particles - the introductory
  • the risk of increased viral load described above is solved and this provides protection against infection for people when the filter is replaced.
  • no chemically potent disinfectants based on chlorine or peroxide are required for this. Due to the composition, which is harmless to human health, the filter element can advantageously also be used as a breathing filter , especially used in respirators.
  • the filter medium surface with the adsorbent and/or the adsorption layer or the adsorption film is hydrophilic, in particular strongly hydrophilic. It is particularly advantageous here if the filter medium surface with the adsorbent and/or the adsorption layer or the adsorption film is designed in such a way that water forms a contact angle of less than or equal to 25° on it. This allows the interaction with a virus or a virus membrane and / or a Bacterium or a bacterial membrane and thus the filter effectiveness of the filter element can be further increased.
  • the proportion by weight of the adsorbent remaining at 100% by weight is filled with water, in particular the adsorbent has a water content in a range from greater than or equal to 15% by weight to less than or equal to 20% by weight .

  • the adsorbent is designed as an open-pored adsorption layer and/or as an open-pored adsorption film on the filter medium surface. It is particularly advantageous here if the open-pore adsorption layer and/or the open-pore adsorption film has an inner surface area of greater than or equal to 0.6 m 2 /g and less than or equal to 3 m 2 /g.
  • open-pored adsorption layers or adsorption films are highly hydrophilic and offer a large reactive surface area for adsorption or chemisorption and exhibit a very low or minimal pressure drop. The latter is extremely important for use in filter systems or cleaning systems, since filter modifications or filter coatings must not significantly impair or negatively influence the function of the filter/filter element, mainly with regard to the pressure drop.
  • the adsorbent or the adsorption layer/adsorption film has the following composition:
  • - aluminum hydroxide in a range from greater than or equal to 39.5% by weight to less than or equal to 59.5% by weight;
  • - chitosan in a range from greater than or equal to 10% by weight to less than or equal to 20% by weight; at least one surfactant in a range of greater than or equal to 0.01% by volume to less than or equal to 0.5% by volume;
  • - binders in particular polyurethane binders, in a range from greater than or equal to 10% by weight to less than or equal to 30% by weight;
  • An open-pore adsorption layer and/or an open-pore adsorption film with this composition and in particular an inner surface area of greater than or equal to 0.6 m 2 /g to less than or equal to 3 m 2 /g represents an optimal ratio of filter effectiveness and tolerable pressure drop.

  • a spray device in particular with a spray pressure in the range of 0.5 bar.
  • HVLP High Volume Low Pressure
  • the rebound effect on the filter medium surface is very low, so that the adsorbent suspension can penetrate deep into the three-dimensional structure of the filter medium or the filter layer without sticking. It is helpful here if, on the side opposite the sprayed filter medium surface side, suck in such a way that the spray mist of the adsorbent suspension is drawn through the filter medium.
  • a step of heating the filter medium in particular to a temperature in the range of 100° C., by means of a heating device is carried out before the step of applying the adsorbent suspension.
  • a step of moistening the filter element by means of a spray device is carried out after the step of applying the adsorbent suspension.
  • An HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spray gun for example, can be used as the spray device. It has been found that the subsequent moistening of the filter element leads to alkalinity in the area of the aluminum hydroxide or the aluminum trihydrate particles, as a result of which the adsorption effect of the virus particles or bacterial particles is further improved.
