Description
AN INNOVATIVE ‘RETROFITTABLE TYPE’ HINGE ASSEMBLY FOR USE IN DOOR FIXING AND METHOD OF WORKING FOR SAME.
Field of Invention
The present invention pertains to the field of door/window fittings/door constructs or door installation devices or door fixing devices or door hinges , and is in particular, directed towards a manually operable/installable retrofittable type door hinge assembly for use in the door fixing function/door installation function, for effective and smooth door installation functions, applicable to any kind of door, inclusive of domestic / office / corporate / industrial / office houses and vehicular applications.
The invention thus aims to provide an innovative and highly improved effective door hinge assembly, which is easy to install and also possesses the retrofittability attribute.
Background of Invention
From the pre-historic times the issue of door installation has been a subject matter of intense research and over a period of time relatively new concepts and technologies have been emerging with several innovative features. Historically, various considerations such as simplicity and ease in functioning along with durability of the door hinge over a period of time have required the installation of door fixing devices.
The issue of accurate, specifically directed and effective door fixing device systems or door fixing mechanisms has thus been the subject matter of scientific and technical research studies for almost more than a century now and the said issue assumed more significance ever since the society and mankind became aware of the economic potential and economic relevance of door stopping installations in offices and commercial establishments as well, in addition to domestic applications.
The prior art profile has been replete with numerous patented technologies aimed at providing door fixers and door fixing systems or simply door hinge mechanisms used for door installation/door fixing which evolved gradually in
terms of efficiency and ease of operation while ensuring the installation requisites meet the utmost level of consumer satisfaction and comfort parameters. This was followed by arrival on scene of the several door fixing assemblies and units, each of which thus represented an improvement and advancement over the preexisting concepts technology.
The US Patent No. 10,138,673 issued in favor of Chapman discloses an invention wherein is described a hinge mounted assembly for existing door constructions for supporting articles between a door and a door jamb in a door construction that has upper and lower hinges; including a first "U" shaped bracket mounted above one of the hinges to prevent downward movement of the hinge mounted assembly, and a second "U" shaped bracket mounted below one of the hinges to prevent upward movement of the hinge mounted assembly, and a vertically running support rod connected to the two brackets, such that it abuts closely against the protruding portion of both hinges on the back side of the door, to prevent lateral movement of the hinge mounted assembly. No tools are necessary because the vertically elongated mounting assembly does no damage to the multi-hinged door upon which it is installed. It makes use of the unique, available features of an existing hinge-mounted door to support the bracket assembly, reducing part complexity, eliminating the need for holes in the door, and requiring no installation tools (e.g., no screwdrivers, no drills), while providing higher load support over an extended vertical distance along the front-side and/or the back-side of the door. This assembly can support a variety of door products, including a child-safety door guard on both the front-side and back-side of the door, as well as a swinging arm towel rack on both the front-side and back-side of the door.
To overcome the indentified issues of existing products, the invention in the ‘Chapman Patent’, provides a no-tools-required method for attaching add-on products to extended vertical mounting surfaces on the lower area of hinged- doors. The present invention involves a mounting assembly for a multi-hinged door, allowing finger guards, coat racks or towel rods to be affixed to the frontside or back-side of a door in a manner that requires no drilling of holes, no installation tools, do damaging paint-stripping adhesives, does not require specific door height, adapts by its design to varying door hinge vertical lengths, and adapts by its design to various door hinge locations. The mounting system is also notable for being easily removable, returning the door to its original condition when uninstalled.
The US Patent No. 10,174,536 issued in favor of Krumbiegel et al discloses an invention wherein is described a door hinge with at least one hinge axis, at least
one holding arm that engages on the hinge axis and at least one contour, in which the at least one holding arm is supported on the contour with at least one section, retaining disks are arranged adjacent to the at least one holding arm and brake disks are arranged adjacent to the contour in order to generate a holding torque that is dependent on the opening angle, wherein the retaining disks and the brake disks engage into one another, and wherein at least the first holding arm, which is supported on the contour, is or can be stressed at least relative to the contour by a basic clamping force. In a hinge for being connected to a door that can be pivoted relative to a column console, comprising at least one hinge axis, at least one holding arm that engages on the hinge axis and at least one contour, wherein the at least one holding arm is supported on the contour with at least one section, this objective is attained in that retaining disks are arranged adjacent to the at least one holding arm and brake disks are arranged adjacent to the contour in order to generate a holding torque that is dependent on the opening angle of the door, which is or can be connected to the door hinge (100), during a pivoting movement thereof, wherein the retaining disks and the brake disks engage into one another, the at least one contour is formed on the outer side of at least one contour element, the brake disks and the contour element have the shape of a circular arc and the at least one holding arm and the retaining disks are non-rotatably held on the hinge axis, wherein the assembly consisting of the contour element with its contour and the brake disks can be moved relative to the assembly consisting of the at least one holding arm and the retaining disks about the hinge axis, and wherein at least the first holding arm, which is supported on the contour, is or can be stressed at least relative to the contour by means of a basic clamping force in order to hold the assemblies consisting of the holding arms and retaining disks and of the contour element and the brake disks on one another. Enhancements of the invention are defined in the dependent claims.
Consequently, a thusly designed door hinge comprises at least one hinge axis, on which at least one holding arm engages. The at least one holding arm particularly is arranged on the hinge axis such that it extends transverse thereto, particularly perpendicular thereto. For example, the at least one holding arm has an end that is provided with a through-opening, wherein the hinge axis extends through this through-opening after the installation of the at least one holding arm on the hinge axis. The hinge axis may particularly be arranged in a space with a vertical orientation and the at least one holding arm arranged thereon may extend away from the hinge axis in said space perpendicular thereto, particularly with an approximately horizontal orientation. The at least one holding arm advantageously is non-rotatably arranged on the hinge axis in order to prevent
the at least one holding arm from inadvertently rotating or turning about the hinge axis. This can be realized, in particular, with uneven shapes of the through- opening and the hinge axis at least in the region, in which the at least one holding arm is arranged on the hinge axis.
The US Patent No. 10,267,075 issued in favor of Kenyon et al discloses an invention wherein is described a self-contained hinge mechanism that is including a hinge movement control assembly. The hinge movement control assembly includes a number of stacked alternating friction rings and pressure disks providing a tunable pivoting resistance. As the hinge mechanism is actuated, an internal shaft and a set of friction rings rotationally-locked to the internal shaft and door moves relative to a set of pressure disks rotationally- locked to a fixed hinge mechanism housing and mount frame. A resistance to the pivoting of the hinge mechanism elements is provided by the clamping force of multiple force members moving the pressure disks along axial translation guides of the housing closer to one another and sandwiching the friction rings closer together. Embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in connection with a door hinge or set of door hinges on a body closure or opening aperture that contains all of the hardware for movement feel and behavior within the hinge package space. Among other things, the self-contained hinge mechanism described herein can eliminate the need for a separate or external door movement mechanism (e.g., check strap, strut, and/or strut systems, etc.) while providing the same or even enhanced behavior characteristics over conventional hinge mechanisms.
In some embodiments, the behavior of the self-contained hinge mechanism may be adjusted or configured to provide a defined movement behavior based on the particular hinge movement control assembly employed therein. In other words, the hinge movement control assembly may include a number of components that, when arranged inside a hinge housing, provide a particular type of movement for the hinge and/or resistance to opening. A first movement control assembly may include a series of stacked elements that provide continuous rotational friction over a total angular movement range of the hinge. In one embodiment, the series of stacked elements may be forced toward one another via a force member (e.g., a spring, actuator, piston, pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder, inflatable bladder, etc.) disposed on each side of the stacked elements. The hinge including the first movement control assembly may be referred to herein as the "infinite friction" hinge. A second movement control assembly may include a gear reduced detent mechanism. This mechanism may provide at least one cam ring captured between two or more cam and/or detent disks. As the
cam ring is rotated relative to the cam disks, a cam feature of the cam ring may follow at least one cam surface of the cam disks, or vice versa. Similar, if not identical, to the first movement control assembly, a force member may be disposed adjacent to each side of the cam ring and in contact with the cam disks.
The US Patent No. 7,143,476 issued in favor of Minami discloses an invention wherein is described a tilt hinge. In order to provide a tilt hinge small in size and diameter capable of generating a stable friction torque of approximately 100 kgf/mm, a hinge friction-rotatably coupling a first member and a second member that are relatively opened/closed includes: a holder attached to one of the first member and the second member; a shaft attached to the other one of the first member and the second member to be rotatable relative to the holder and immovable in an axial direction; a plurality of first friction discs restrained by the holder to be rotatable and movable in the axial direction, with the shaft being inserted through insertion holes thereof; a plurality of second friction discs interposed between the first friction discs to be movable in the axial direction with rotation thereof restrained by the shaft; and a plurality of disc springs and/or spring washers attached to the shaft so as to bring the first friction discs and the second friction discs to be in contact with each other by pressing the first friction discs and the second friction discs in the axial direction, wherein the disc springs and/or the spring washers are provided outside the holder in which the first friction discs and the second friction discs are stacked on each other and inside the holder.

A locking unit featuring a first and a second braking element is furthermore provided, wherein the first braking element consists, e.g., of outer disks and the second braking element consists, e.g., of inner disks. The first braking element is connected to the first motion element and the second braking element is connected to the second motion element. The braking elements can be engaged with one another under the influence of a force generated by a force application element in such a way that they are locked on one another, wherein the motion elements are likewise locked on one another in this case due to the connections between the braking elements and the motion elements. The force application element is realized, e.g., in the form of a spring. A mechanical switching unit is furthermore provided and can assume a coupled state and a separated state, wherein the switching unit changes over from the coupled state into the separated state when the motion elements are moved relative to one
another and releases the force acting upon the braking elements in the coupled state such that these braking elements are engaged with one another. The switching unit furthermore comprises a first or a second actuating element, wherein the first actuating element is connected to the first motion element and the second actuating element is connected to the second motion element. The connection is respectively realized in such a way that the movement of the motion elements causes a rotational motion of the actuating elements, which are arranged on one another in such a way that they carry out a pivoting motion parallel to the rotational axis during a mutual change of position. The actuating elements thereby change their distance from one another such that the switching unit changes over from the coupled state into the separated state, in which the force acting upon the braking elements is blocked such that the braking elements are separated from one another. A coupling element, e.g. in the form of balls, is furthermore provided and converts the relative movement between the motion elements into a pivoting movement of the actuating elements, wherein the coupling element automatically returns into its starting position and thereby releases the force acting upon the braking elements such that the braking elements are engaged with one another.
The US Patent No.7, 107,649 issued in favor of Nishihara discloses an invention wherein is described a hinge device, hinge device of a portable terminal connects a keyboard member to a comparatively massive display member and has cam and friction mechanisms. The present invention is highly compatible and suited to multiple applications and has the added advantage of customized installation at both the domestic dwelling units as well as corporate offices and industrial installations. The present invention is also equipped to address the consumer concerns punctuated by user-friendly, safe and effectively reliable door/window fixing devices/door installation devices or door hinge assemblies. In comparison to the already existing prior art, the door hinge of the present invention attempts to offer various advantages in terms of the relative ease of operation and the attribute of retrofittability that renders the use of invention in reinstallation as well.
As per the best of understanding, knowledge and belief of the Inventor-Applicant in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the innovative ‘retrofittable type’ door hinge assembly of the present invention contains the following parts:
This product is a Hinge and it has one separate part called Plate.
Hinge has the Following Parts.
• Leaf A
Leaf B
• Pin
• Caps
Leaf A - Large Leaf- Fixed with the Door.
Leaf B - Small Leaf- Fixed with the Door Frame.
Also both the leaves have screw holes for mounting purpose. These leaves are connected by a Pin which is inserted through the knuckles of Leaf A and Leaf B.
Pin - Leaf A and Leaf Bare connected by this Pin which is inserted through the knuckles of Leaf A and Leaf B. Also this Pin act as an axis of rotation for both the leaves. (Leaf A and Leaf B).
Caps - Pin has a circular caps tightly inserted at both the ends that does not let the pin to come out.
Plate- While Leaf A and Leaf B are connected, Plate is a separate part, It is rectangle in shape to be mounted separately on the door frame, having screw holes for mounting purpose and comes with a slot. (This slot has same dimensions as of Leaf B)
Fixing of the Door
To fix the door we need to mount Leaf A of the Hinge on the door and the Plate on the door frame at exact same heights from the floor in front of each other with the help of screws.
Plate is mounted on the frame with its slot facing inside (slot facing towards the door frame) leaving the space for Leaf B of the Hinge to slide in while fixing the door.
Also when mounting the Plate, the middle screwhole is left unscrewed, as the last screw will be tighten later with Leaf B of the Hinge.
ThenLeaf B of the Hinge is slid into the slot of the Plate. When the screw hole of Leaf B comes exactly under the middle screw hole of the Plate and then screw is passed through both the holes to fix the Leaf B of the Hinge with the frame while Leaf A of the same Hinge is already fixed with the door.
Invention Advantages
In this invention adding an extra Plate having a slot and making the Leaf B’s size sameas the size of the slot in the Plate, makes it easier for the person to fix the door, because after mounting the Plate on the Frame and Leaf A of the Hinge on the Door, person has to just slide in the Leaf B of the Hinge inside the Plate’s Slot. This will hold the Door by not letting the door to come out and last screw can be easily tighten to fix the door. This is not the case in the traditional Hinges.
The Product (hinge assembly) has following main components.

This product is a Hinge and it has one separate part called Plate.
Hinge has the Following Parts.
• Leaf A
• Leaf B
• Pin
• Caps
Leaf A - Large Leaf- Fixed with the Door.
Leaf B - Small Leaf- Fixed with the Door Frame.
Also both the leaves havescrew holes for mounting purpose.
Also when mounting the Plate, the middle screw hole is left unscrewed, as the last screw will be tighten later with Leaf B of the Hinge.
Then Leaf B of the Hinge is slid into the slot of the Plate. When the screw hole of Leaf B comes exactly under the middle screw hole of the Plate andthen screw is passed through both the holes to fix the Leaf B of the Hinge with the frame while Leaf A of the same Hinge is already fixed with the door.
Invention
In this invention adding an extra Plate having a slot and making the Leaf B’s size sameas the size of the slot in the Plate, makes it easier for the person to fix the door, because after mounting the Plate on the Frame and Leaf A of the Hinge on the Door, person has to just slide in the Leaf B of the Hinge inside the Plate’s Slot. This will hold the Door by not letting the door to come out and last screw can be easily tighten to fix the door. This is not the case in the traditional Hinges.
The Product has following main components.
