Description

TITLE : "METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING A SHOE PROVIDED WITH AN ELASTIC BAND"
* * *
DESCRIPTION
Technical field
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a shoe provided with an elastic band . Technical background
In the shoe-making field, shoes are known, e . g . moccasins or ankle boots , which comprise an upper, in turn including a tongue intended to l ie over the instep of the wearer ' s foot . The tongue covers an underlying elastic band . The elastic band j oins the two s ides of the upper, between which the tongue is interposed, and performs the function of adapting the upper to the foot instep, stretching for a tall instep and slackening for a shallow instep .
However, shoes provided with an elastic band suf fer from a few drawbacks . One drawback lies in the fact that the elastic band causes discomfort to the person wearing the shoe , since it directly acts upon and presses against the foot instep . Another drawback i s that , when in use , the elastic band will tend to relax, resulting in aesthetically undesired deformation of the upper .
In order to overcome such drawbacks , the present Applicant has conceived a shoe , protected by European patent EP 1 685 770 Bl , wherein the elastic band is fixed at its ends inside the upper and lies in a position between the tongue and an inner lining . The tongue is sewn to the inner lining only, so that the elastic band can freely extend between the tongue and the inner lining when the shoe is in use .
Summary of the invention It is one obj ect of the present invention to provide a method for manufacturing a shoe provided with an elastic band which represents an improvement over the prior art .
Such obj ect is achieved by means o f a method having the technical features set out in the appended independent claim .
It is understood that the appended claims are an integral part of the technical teachings provided in the following detailed description of the present invention . In particular, the appended dependent claims define some preferred embodiments of the present invention that include some optional technical features .
Further features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent in light of the following detailed description, provided herein merely as a nonlimiting example and referring, in particular, to the annexed drawings as summari zed below .

Detailed description of the invention
With particular reference to Figure 1, there is shown a shoe, designated as a whole as 10, made in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the method of the present invention .
Shoe 10 comprises an upper 12 on the outside and a lining 14, in particular made of leather, sewn inside upper 12. Shoe 10 further comprises a sole 16 whereto upper 12 and inner lining 14 are fixed.
Upper 12 comprises a top tongue 18 at the top and a lateral strip 20 fixed to sole 16 and surrounding top tongue 18. Top tongue 18 is intended to lie on the foot instep. Lateral strip 20 has a front portion 22 forming the toe box of upper 12, and a pair of end portions 24 extending on opposite sides from front portion 22, thus forming the sides of upper 12. Furthermore, top tongue 18 is contained between end portions 24 of lateral strip 20.
With particular reference to Figures 3 and 4, top tongue 18 and lateral strip 20 are made separately by weaving, in particular by means of a weaving machine. Both are made of a fabric having an outer face obtained from a yarn of natural fibres, e.g. wool. The fabric of lateral strip 20 - and preferably also the fabric of top tongue 18 - has an inner face obtained from a synthetic yarn, e.g. based on polypropylene (in particular, a yarn commercially referred to as "Daytona") . In other words, top tongue 18 and lateral strip 20 are made of a woven fabric made up of two layers , the first one forming the outer face and the second one forming the inner face . In this manner, the good aesthetic quality of the yarn used for the outer face is associated with the properties of compactness , comfort and resistance to abrasion of the yarn used for the inner face .
With particular reference to Figures 1 and 2 , shoe 10 comprises an elastic band 26 that j oins end portions 24 o f lateral strip 20 . In particular, each end of elastic band 26 is fixed to an inner face of a respective end portion 24 of lateral strip 20 . Lining 14 is f ixed - in particular, sewn to top tongue 18 only at the front or terminal edge 28 of the latter . Thus , elastic band 26 can be inserted lateral ly in the space comprised between top tongue 18 and lining 14 . Elastic band 26 can therefore freely extend and contract between lining 14 and top tongue 18 , being only fixed to end portions 24 .
When in use , therefore , elastic band 26 is not directly in contact with the foot instep, since its underside i s covered by lining 14 , so that shoe 10 will prove comfortable for the user . Moreover, elastic band 26 is not visible from the outside even when it is not worn, since it is covered at the centre by top tongue 18 and laterally by end portions 24 , so that shoe 10 will have a pleasant appearance for the observer .
According to the present invention, the method for manufacturing the shoe comprises a plurality of steps .
A step a ) of the method consists o f making, by weaving, top tongue 18 and lateral strip 20 of upper 12 . Each one of top tongue 18 and lateral strip 20 is made of a fabric having an outer face obtained from a yarn of natural fibres , e . g . wool . The fabric of lateral strip 20 - and, advantageously, also the fabric of top tongue 18 - has an inner face obtained from a synthetic yarn, e.g. based on polypropylene (in particular a yarn commercially referred to as "Daytona") .
A step b) of the method consists of fixing each end of elastic band 26 to an inner face of a respective end portion 24 of lateral strip 20. Preferably, such step envisages a thermal taping of the ends of elastic band 26 onto the inner face of respective end portion 24.
A step c) of the method consists of fixing, e.g. by sewing, lateral strip 20 around top tongue 18.
A step d) of the method consists of inserting elastic band 26 laterally in the space comprised between top tongue 18 and a lining 14 intended to internally line upper 12.
A step e) of the method consists of fixing, e.g. by sewing, top tongue 18 to lining 14 only at a front or terminal edge 28 of top tongue 18.
Preferably, the method includes a step f ) , in particular following step a) , wherein top tongue 18 and lateral strip 20 are washed in water (e.g. in a washing machine) .
Optionally, the method further includes a step g) , in particular following washing step f ) , wherein top tongue 18 and the lateral strip 20 are subjected to a water-repellent or waterproofing treatment. Thus, when shoe 10 is in use, water cannot seep through the mesh of the fabric used for making upper 12.
Advantageously, a step h) is envisaged after step f) or g) , wherein top tongue 18 and lateral strip 20 are both ironed, in particular prior to step b) wherein elastic band 26 is fixed to end portions 24 of lateral strip 20.
According to a further aspect, the present invention relates to a shoe 10 comprising an upper 12 and a lining 14 that internally lines upper 12. Said upper 12 comprises a top tongue 18 made by weaving, and a lateral strip 20 woven separately from top tongue 18 and fixed around said top tongue 18 . Each one of top tongue 18 and lateral strip 20 is made of a fabric having an outer face obtained from a yarn of natural fibres . At least lateral strip 20 is made of a fabric having an inner face obtained from a synthetic yarn . Shoe 10 further comprises an elastic band 26 having each end fixed to an inner face of a respective end portion 24 belonging to lateral strip 20 . Elastic band 26 passes through the space comprised between top tongue 18 and lining 14 that internally lines upper 12 . Top tongue 18 and lining 14 are mutually fixed only at a front or terminal edge 28 of top tongue 18 .
Of course , without prej udice to the principle of the invention, the forms of embodiment and the implementation details may be extensively varied from those described and illustrated herein by way of non- limiting example , without however departing from the scope o f the invention as set out in the appended claims .
