Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments
Referring to the drawings, and initially to Figs. 1 to 5 thereof, there is illustrated a selftanning lotion applicator according to the invention, indicated generally by the reference numeral 1 . The applicator 1 has an applicator pad 2 having a front face 3 and a rear face 4. The front face 3 is of a material suitable for applying a self-tan lotion to a person's skin, and typically may comprise a velvet material. A handgrip, which in this case comprises a glove 5, is mounted on the rear face 4 of the applicator pad 2 for reception of a person’s hand to securely hold the applicator 1 during use. The glove 5 has a hand portion 6 with outwardly extending finger loops 7, 8 for reception of a thumb and fingers of a person’s hand. In this case, the finger loops 7, 8 are open ended.
The applicator pad 2 has a resilient foam core 10 mounted between a front panel 11 with the front face 3 and a rear panel 12 with the rear face 4. The front panel 11 is of a velvet fabric. The rear panel 12 comprises a material that is impervious to the tanning lotion to prevent any tanning lotion migrating through the rear panel 12 and staining a person’s hand inserted in the glove 5. Either the material of the rear panel 12 is impervious to the tanning lotion or an inside face 13 of the rear panel 12 comprises a film or sheet of material that is impervious to the tanning lotion. Likewise, ideally an inside face14 of the front panel 10 also comprises a film or sheet of material that is impervious to the tanning lotion.
In use, a person inserts their hand 15 into the glove 5, as shown in Fig. 3, inserting their thumb and fingers 16 into the finger loops 7, 8, as shown. In this case, as the finger loops 7, 8 are open, they will accommodate fingers 16 of different length. Some tanning lotion is either put on the front face 3 or on the skin of the person to be covered with the self-tanning lotion and the applicator 1 is then worked back and forth across the person’s skin to spread the self-tanning lotion over the skin evenly. It will be appreciated that the glove 5 provides the user with a very secure grip of the applicator pad 2. Also, the foam core 10 is such as to provide sufficient stiffness to the pad 2 to hold it’s shape during use, while at the same time being sufficiently resiliently flexible to allow smooth and easy travel over the contours of the skin to which the self-tanning lotion is to be applied. During application, the person’s hand 15 is shielded above the pad 2, avoiding any staining of the person’s hand 15 by the self-tanning lotion during application.
It will be appreciated that the applicator pad 2 may be any suitable shape, such as round, square, oval, etc., and may be provided in various sizes. To accommodate hands of different size, the finger loops 7, 8 could be open-ended, tapered or elasticated and if desired several or al! of these adjustable features may be combined in the one applicator 1.

The front face 3 and an outer face 84 of the side panel 83 is of a material which is suitable for applying a self-tanning lotion to a person’s skin.
An inside face of the front panel 81 , the rear panel 82 and the side panel 83 each comprise a barrier layer 85 of material which is impervious to the self-tanning lotion,
The handgrip mounted on the rear face 4 comprises the glove 5 which has open-ended finger loops 7, 8 for reception of each finger and thumb of a person’s hand. The glove 5 is formed by a glove panel 86 of elasticated material which overlaps and is attached to the rear face 4 along each side 87, 88 of the glove panel 86 leaving openings 89, 90 at an inner end 91 and at an outer end 92 of the glove panel 86. The glove panel 86 is also atached to the rearface 4 by a plurality of spaced-apart finger seams 94 extending inwardly from the outer end 92 of the glove panel 86 towards the inner end 91 of the glove panel 86 to form the finger loops 7, 8. The finger seams 94 terminate intermediate the outer end 92 and the inner end 91 of the glove panel 86.
The opening 90 formed between the inner end 91 of the glove panel 86 and the rear face 4 allows for insertion of a person’s hand into the glove 5. An elasticated wrist cuff 96 is mounted at a periphery of the opening 90 to further secure the hand of a user in engagement with the glove 5 in use.
It will be noted that the finger loops 7, 8 are positioned on the rear face 4 to locate a user's hand fully on top of the rear face 4 when the user’s hand is fully inserted into the glove 5 to protect the user’s hand from the tanning lotion in use.
The terms “comprise" and “include", and any variations thereof required for grammatical reasons, are to be considered as interchangeable and accorded the widest possible interpretation. The invention is not limited to the embodiments hereinbefore described but may be varied in both construction and detail within the scope of the appended claims.
