Stand der Technik State of the art
In hydrogen-based fuel cells, hydrogen is converted into electrical energy with the help of oxygen. For this purpose, the individual fuel cell has a membrane-electrode assembly with an anode and a cathode. During operation of a fuel cell system, hydrogen is supplied to the anode via an anode path and oxygen is supplied to the cathode via a cathode path. In mobile applications, ambient air serves as the oxygen supplier. The hydrogen that is also required must be stored and carried in a suitable tank. Due to faster refueling times and low and harmless emissions, since they consist only of water, hydrogen-based fuel cells are considered the mobility concept of the future.
However, storing hydrogen on board a vehicle poses a challenge due to the low density of hydrogen. Various tank types have become established for gaseous storage or storage, which differ essentially in terms of their material and the maximum permissible storage pressure. In mobile applications, a storage pressure of 350 bar or 700 bar has prevailed.
The refueling process is standardized by internationally valid standards, for example by the SAE TIR J2601 standard. This stipulates that the filling stations must pre-cool hydrogen to -40°C. Because it heats up when you fill up hydrogen increases significantly due to expansion or relaxation and the "reverse" Joule-Thomson effect. Pre-cooling prevents the gas from overheating during the fueling process. Nevertheless, when refueling, temperatures of 85°C or more are often reached. The hydrogen is heated further if it is removed from the tank while driving and fed to a pressure reducer in order to reduce the storage pressure to a so-called medium pressure. This can lead to temperatures that can damage not only the pressure regulator, but also subsequent components, including the anode of a fuel cell stack. Other factors influencing the temperature and/or the pressure of the hydrogen are the current environmental conditions, the time interval from when the tank was filled, the tank fill level, the calibrated pressure after the pressure reducer and the required hydrogen mass flow. The temperature and pressure range of hydrogen in a fuel cell system is therefore very wide. This must be taken into account when designing the fuel cell system, especially when designing the components that are used to provide hydrogen. The thermal demands on these components increase accordingly.
It is an object of the present invention to reduce the thermal requirements, thereby reducing the cost of these components.
To solve the problem, the method with the features of claim 1 and the fuel cell system with the features of claim 7 are proposed. Advantageous developments of the invention can be found in the respective dependent claims.
Offenbarung der Erfindung Disclosure of Invention
A method for operating a fuel cell system is proposed, in which hydrogen is stored in a compressed gas tank and is supplied to an anode of a fuel cell stack via an anode path, and in which the gas pressure of the hydrogen taken from the compressed gas tank is reduced with the aid of a pressure reducer arranged in the anode path. According to the invention, the hydrogen taken from the compressed gas tank is Thermally conditioned using at least one heat exchanger arranged in the anode path.
With the help of the proposed thermal conditioning, the very wide temperature range mentioned at the outset can be made narrower. In this way, the thermal requirements placed on the components present in the hydrogen path are reduced. At the same time, the costs for these components can be reduced. For example, alternative materials that are less expensive can be used. The proposed method also offers an additional degree of freedom for both the refueling process and the operation of the fuel cell system.
The proposed thermal conditioning using the at least one heat exchanger can be used both for cooling and for heating the hydrogen. The normal case will be that the temperature of the hydrogen is reduced with the help of the heat exchanger. At very low outside temperatures, however, the process can also be used to heat the hydrogen.
Advantageously, the hydrogen is thermally conditioned upstream of the pressure reducer, ie still in the high-pressure area of the anode path. In this way, the pressure reducer is also protected from hydrogen temperatures that are too high. In principle, the at least one heat exchanger or at least one heat exchanger can also be arranged downstream of the pressure reducer.
Furthermore, it is proposed that the heat exchanger—or at least one heat exchanger—is operated passively using ambient air. This means that ambient air is used as the heat-transfer medium, so that no additional medium has to be kept available. Furthermore, additional costs can be saved through passive operation.
Alternatively or additionally, it is proposed that the heat exchanger—or at least one heat exchanger—is actively operated using a circulated fluid. This only requires an additional media circuit if the heat exchanger is not connected to an existing media circuit, for example to a cooling circuit for cooling the fuel cell stack. can be connected. With the help of an actively circulated fluid, the hydrogen can be thermally conditioned in a targeted manner, regardless of the prevailing ambient temperatures.
A heat pump can also be used as a heat exchanger.
The heat transfer at the heat exchanger is preferably regulated to a temperature relevant to the operation of the fuel cell stack, for example to the inlet temperature of the hydrogen in the fuel cell stack. In this way, the operation of the fuel cell stack or the energy conversion process taking place in the fuel cell stack can be optimized at the same time with the aid of the proposed method. In this case, the heat exchanger—or at least one heat exchanger—is preferably arranged in the area where the hydrogen enters the fuel cell stack.
The fuel cell system also proposed to solve the problem mentioned at the outset comprises a compressed gas tank for storing hydrogen, which is connected to an anode of a fuel cell stack via an anode path. A pressure reducer is arranged in the anode path. According to the invention, at least one heat exchanger for thermal conditioning of the hydrogen taken from the compressed gas tank is also arranged in the anode path.
By implementing the at least one heat exchanger, the fuel cell system is suitable for carrying out the method according to the invention described above or can be operated according to this method. This means that the thermal demands on the components provided in the hydrogen path are reduced, so that more cost-effective components can be installed. Furthermore, the energy conversion process in the fuel cell stack can be optimized by thermal conditioning of the hydrogen.
The hydrogen taken from the compressed gas tank can preferably be both cooled and heated with the aid of the at least one heat exchanger arranged in the anode path. The heat exchanger—or at least one heat exchanger—is preferably arranged upstream of the pressure reducer in the anode path. In this way, the temperature of the hydrogen can already be lowered in front of the pressure reducer, so that the pressure reducer is protected from damage caused by excessively high hydrogen temperatures.
Alternatively or additionally, it is proposed that the heat exchanger—or at least one heat exchanger—is arranged downstream of the pressure reducer in the anode path. This makes it easier to adjust the heat transfer at the heat exchanger to a temperature relevant to the operation of the fuel cell stack, for example the temperature at which the hydrogen enters the fuel cell stack.
The heat exchanger can be designed as a passive or active heat exchanger. The passive design can be implemented particularly cost-effectively, for example by supplying ambient air. The active execution, for example with the help of a circulating fluid, enables targeted thermal conditioning.
The heat exchanger - or at least one heat exchanger - can also be designed as a heat pump.
Diese zeigen: The invention and its advantages are explained in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings. These show:

Ausführliche Beschreibung der Zeichnungen Detailed description of the drawings
The fuel cell system shown in FIG. 1 includes a fuel cell stack 5 with a multiplicity of fuel cells in a stacked arrangement. The representation of FIG. 1 is limited to the area of a Anode 4 of the fuel cell stack 5 and the components for supplying the anode 4 with hydrogen.
The hydrogen required is stored in a plurality of compressed gas tanks 2 which are connected to the anode 4 of the fuel cell stack 5 via an anode path 3 . The compressed gas tanks 2 each have a valve 8 for switching on and off. Since the storage pressure in the compressed gas tanks 2 is usually very high, a pressure reducer 6 is arranged in the anode path 3, with the aid of which the storage pressure can be reduced to the so-called medium pressure. This in turn causes the hydrogen to heat up. A heat exchanger 7 is therefore arranged in the anode path 3 downstream of the pressure reducer 6, which heat exchanger cools the hydrogen and thus thermally conditions it.
The thermal conditioning with the help of the heat exchanger 7 does not necessarily have to lead to cooling of the hydrogen. At very low outside temperatures, for example, it may be necessary to heat the hydrogen taken from the compressed gas tanks 2 . This can also be implemented using the heat exchanger 7 .
In the fuel cell system shown in FIG. 1 , the heat exchanger 7 is arranged upstream of a hydrogen injector 9 and a suction jet pump 10 of the anode path 3 . The hydrogen injector 9 can be used to control the quantity of fresh hydrogen that is admixed in the area of the ejector pump 10 to an anode exhaust gas flow that is recirculated via a recirculation path 12 with the aid of a blower 11 . The cooling of the hydrogen effected beforehand reduces the thermal load on the components arranged downstream of the heat exchanger 7 in the anode path 3 . This means that the thermal requirements for these components are reduced, making them more cost-effective. Furthermore, with the help of the heat exchanger 7, the hydrogen temperature can be adjusted to a value that leads to an optimization of the energy conversion process in the fuel cell stack 5.
The fuel cell system 1 shown in FIG. 2 differs from that of FIG. 1 in that the heat exchanger 7 is not arranged downstream but upstream of the pressure reducer 6 in the anode path 3 . This arrangement has the advantage that the temperature of the hydrogen is already lowered before the pressure reducer 6, so that this is also protected from excessive temperatures. The thermal demands on the pressure reducer 6 can thus also be reduced.
