Abstract
Es wird eine Batteriezelle (10) mit einer elektrischen Sicherung angegeben, wobei die elektrische Sicherung eine Schmelzsicherung (2) ist, die an einem Terminal (11) an einer Außenseite eines Gehäuses (14) der Batteriezelle (2) angeordnet ist und die Schmelzsicherung (2) von einem Polymer (1) bedeckt ist.
Description
Batteriezelle mit einer elektrischen Sicherung
Die Erfindung betrifft eine Batteriezelle mit einer elektrischen Sicherung, insbesondere eine Batteriezelle für eine Hochvolt-Batterie.
In elektrisch angetriebenen Kraftfahrzeugen wie Elektrofahrzeugen, Hybrid- oder Plug-In- Hybridfahrzeugen werden Hochvolt-Batterien eingesetzt, die typischerweise ein oder mehrere Batteriemodule mit jeweils mehreren Batteriezellen aufweisen. Aufgrund der erzielbaren hohen Energiedichte werden in Kraftfahrzeugen insbesondere Lithiumionen-Batterien eingesetzt. Hier und im Folgenden wird der Begriff „Lithiumionen-Batterie“ synonym für alle im Stand der Technik gebräuchlichen Bezeichnungen für Lithium enthaltende galvanische Elemente und Zellen verwendet, wie beispielsweise Lithium-Batterie, Lithium-Zelle, Lithiumionen-Zelle, Lithium-Polymer-Zelle und Lithiumionen-Akkumulator. Insbesondere sind wieder aufladbare Batterien (Sekundärbatterien) inbegriffen. Auch werden die Begriffe „Batterie“ und „elektrochemische Zelle“ synonym zum Begriff „Lithiumionen-Batterie“ genutzt. Die Lithiumionen-Batterie kann auch eine Festkörperbatterie sein, beispielsweise eine keramische oder polymerbasierte Festkörperbatterie.
Im Falle eines mechanischen Aufpralls auf die Batteriezelle, der beispielsweise eine Deformation und/oder das Eindringen eines spitzen Gegenstands in die Batteriezelle bewirkt, kann das Risiko eines elektrischen Kurzschlusses der Elektroden bestehen. Durch exotherme Elektrodenreaktionen, die beispielsweise aufgrund eines Kurzschlusses der Elektroden in Gang gesetzt werden, kann Wärme freigesetzt werden, die zu einer Überhitzung der Batteriezelle führen kann. In diesem Fall kann es zu einem thermischen Durchgehen (thermal runaway) der Batteriezelle kommen. In einem Batteriemodul mit mehreren Batteriezellen kann das thermische Durchgehen einer Batteriezelle zu einer Ausbreitung der Überhitzung auf die benachbarten Batteriezellen führen, so dass ein Risiko der Schädigung des gesamten Batteriemoduls oder sogar der gesamten Hochvoltbatterie bestehen kann, wenn dies nicht durch geeignete Sicherheitsmaßnahmen verhindert wird.
In der Druckschrift DE 102013204341 A1 wird ein Sicherheitselement für eine Batteriezelle beschrieben. Die Batteriezelle enthält eine Schmelzsicherung, die innerhalb des Batteriezellgehäuses zwischen dem positiven Terminal und dem Stromkollektor, der dem positiven Terminal zugeordnet ist, angeordnet ist.
Es ist eine Aufgabe der Erfindung, eine verbesserte Batteriezelle mit einer elektrischen Sicherung anzugeben, wobei sich die Batteriezelle durch eine weitere Erhöhung der Sicherheit und ein vermindertes Risiko eines thermischen Durchgehens auszeichnet.
Gelöst wird diese Aufgabe durch eine Batteriezelle gemäß Anspruch 1. Vorteilhafte Ausführungsformen und Weiterbildungen der Erfindung ergeben sich aus den abhängigen Ansprüchen.
Gemäß einer Ausführungsform der Erfindung weist die Batteriezelle eine elektrische Sicherung auf, wobei die elektrische Sicherung eine Schmelzsicherung ist, die an einem Terminal an einer Außenseite des Gehäuses der Batteriezelle angeordnet ist. Die Schmelzsicherung ist vorzugsweise aus einem Metall oder einer Metalllegierung gebildet. Bevorzugt weist die Schmelzsicherung Aluminium auf oder besteht daraus. Die Schmelzsicherung ist vorteilhaft von einem Polymer bedeckt.
Durch die vorgeschlagene Anordnung der Schmelzsicherung an einem Terminal an einer Außenseite des Gehäuses werden die elektrochemisch aktiven Elemente der Batteriezelle vorteilhaft von der Schmelzsicherung räumlich getrennt. Das Terminal, an dem die Schmelzsicherung angeordnet ist, kann insbesondere an einem Deckel des Gehäuses angeordnet sein. In diesem Fall ist die Schmelzsicherung durch das Material des Gehäuses von den elektrochemisch aktiven Elementen der Batteriezelle getrennt.
Durch die Bedeckung der Sicherung mit einem Polymer wird verhindert, dass beim Aufschmelzen der Schmelzsicherung ein Lichtbogen entsteht. Weiterhin wird auf diese Weise die Schmelzsicherung vor mechanischer Beschädigung und Korrosion geschützt und gleichzeitig die mechanische Stabilität erhöht. Das Polymer kann beispielsweise ein Epoxidharz sein.
Die Batteriezelle ist vorzugsweise eine prismatische Batteriezelle. Das Gehäuse der Batteriezelle kann beispielsweise eine rechteckige Grundfläche aufweisen und im Wesentlichen quaderförmig sein. Das Gehäuse kann beispielsweise eine Bodenwand, Seitenwände und einen Deckel aufweisen. Prismatische Batteriezellen können vorteilhaft leicht gestapelt und zu einem Batteriemodul zusammengesetzt werden. Das Gehäuse der Batteriezelle kann ein Metall
oder eine Metalllegierung aufweisen, beispielsweise Aluminium. Es ist möglich, dass das Gehäuse zumindest bereichsweise mit einer elektrisch isolierenden Schicht versehen ist.
Die Terminals der Batteriezelle sind zum Beispiel an dem Deckel des Gehäuses angeordnet.
Die Batteriezelle weist insbesondere ein positives Terminal und ein negatives Terminal auf. Die Terminals bilden die äußeren elektrischen Anschlüsse der Batteriezelle und sind jeweils mit einem Stromkollektor einer Elektrode elektrisch verbunden. Die Schmelzsicherung schützt die Batteriezelle vor zu hohen Strömen, insbesondere im Fall eines Kurzschlusses der Elektroden. Ein solcher Kurzschluss der Elektroden kann beispielsweise die Folge einer Deformation des Gehäuses oder des Eindringens eines spitzen Gegenstands in das Gehäuse, etwa bei einem Unfall, sein.
Die Erfindung beruht insbesondere auf den nachfolgend dargelegten Überlegungen: Beim Aufschmelzen einer Schmelzsicherung im Fall eines Kurzschlusses besteht das Risiko, dass das verflüssigte Material der Schmelzsicherung in die Umgebung der Schmelzsicherung verspritzt wird. Bei einer Schmelzsicherung aus Aluminium kann beispielsweise flüssiges Aluminium verspritzt werden. Bei der herkömmlichen Anordnung der Schmelzsicherung im Inneren des Batteriezellgehäuses besteht das Risiko, dass das verspritzte heiße Material mit den elektrochemisch aktiven Materialien im Inneren der Batteriezelle reagiert, beispielsweise mit dem Elektrolyten oder den Materialien der Elektroden. Durch exotherme chemische Reaktionen wird Risiko einer Überhitzung der Batteriezelle bis hin zu einem thermischen Durchgehen (thermal runaway) gefördert. Durch die vorgeschlagene Anordnung der Schmelzsicherung an einem Terminal an einer Außenseite des Gehäuses wird ein Verspritzen des Materials der Schmelzsicherung im Inneren des Gehäuses vermieden, die Gefahr des thermischen Durchgehens vermindert und so die Sicherheit erhöht.
Durch die Anordnung der Schmelzsicherung an der Außenseite des Batteriezellegehäuses wird außerdem eine Wärmeentwicklung im Inneren des Batteriezellgehäuses, die bereits beim normalen Betrieb, z.B. beim Schnellladen, durch die an dem Widerstand der Schmelzsicherung auftretende Joulesche Wärme entsteht, vermindert. Auf diese Weise kann verhindert werden, dass ein Batteriemanagementsystem (BMS) aufgrund einer festgestellten zu hohen Temperatur im Batteriezellgehäuse eine Leistungsbeschränkung für die Batteriezelle bewirkt.
Gemäß einer Ausführungsform ist das Terminal, an dem die Schmelzsicherung angeordnet ist, das positive Terminal der Batteriezelle. In diesem Fall ist das Terminal beim mit der positiven Elektrode (Kathode bei Entladevorgang) verbunden. Die Anordnung an dem positiven Terminal hat den Vorteil, dass Aluminium als Material für die Schmelzsicherung verwendet werden kann, das einen niedrigeren Schmelzpunkt als das typischerweise am negativen Terminal verwendete Material Kupfer aufweist.
Gemäß einer Ausführungsform weist das Polymer, mit dem die Schmelzsicherung bedeckt ist, einen Füllstoff zur Verbesserung der Wärmeableitung von der Schmelzsicherung auf.
Besonders geeignete Füllstoffe zur Verbesserung der Wärmeableitung sind AI(OH)3 oder AI2O3.
Zusätzlich oder alternativ enthält das Polymer vorteilhaft einen Füllstoff, der ein Oxidationsmittel ist. Ein als Oxidationsmittel geeigneter Füllstoff ist beispielsweise Ammoniumperchlorat (NH4CIO4). Das Oxidationsmittel kann vorteilhaft mit dem Material der Schmelzsicherung zu einem Oxid reagieren und auf diese Weise die Trennung des Stromflusses bewirken. Im Fall einer Schmelzsicherung aus Aluminium und Ammoniumperchlorat als Oxidationsmittel entsteht beispielsweise nicht leitendes Aluminiumoxid (AI2O3).
Gemäß einer Ausführungsform ist das positive Terminal von dem Gehäuse elektrisch isoliert. Auf dieses Weise kann vorteilhaft verhindert werden, dass durch elektrochemische Vorgänge Lithium- und/ oder Kupferabscheidungen im Zellinneren entstehen, welche zu einem internen Kurzschluss der Batteriezelle führen könnten. Auf diese Weise wird das Risiko eines thermischen Durchgehens der Batteriezelle weiter vermindert.
Gemäß einer alternativen Ausführungsform ist zwischen dem positiven Terminal und dem Gehäuse eine Dichtung angeordnet, die einen elektrisch leitfähigen Kunststoff, insbesondere einen Kunststoff mit nur geringer elektrischer Leitfähigkeit, aufweist. In diesem Fall ist das Gehäuse mit dem positiven Terminal elektrisch leitend verbunden. Das Gehäuse weist in diesem Fall das Potential der Kathode auf. Diese Ausgestaltung kann aus produktionstechnischen Gründen bevorzugt sein.
Es werden weiterhin eine Lithium-Ionenbatterie mit mehreren der hierin beschriebenen Batteriezellen sowie ein Kraftfahrzeug mit einer solchen Lithium-Ionenbatterie vorgeschlagen. Die hierin beschriebene Batteriezelle kann aufgrund der verbesserten Sicherheit vorteilhaft in
einer Lithium-Ionenbatterie verwendet werden, die insbesondere als Traktionsbatterie in einem elektrisch angetrieben Kraftfahrzeug eingesetzt werden kann.
Im Folgenden wird anhand der Figuren ein bevorzugtes Ausführungsbeispiel der Erfindung beschrieben. Daraus ergeben sich weitere Details, bevorzugte Ausführungsformen und Weiterbildungen der Erfindung. Im Einzelnen zeigen schematisch
Fig. 1 eine perspektivische Darstellung eines Gehäuses der Batteriezelle gemäß einem Ausführungsbeispiel,
Fig. 2A eine Detailansicht des Bereichs des positiven Terminals in einer Explosionsdarstellung,
Fig. 2B eine Detailansicht des Bereichs des positiven Terminals der Batteriezelle im Querschnitt.
Gleiche oder gleich wirkende Bestandteile sind in den Figuren jeweils mit den gleichen Bezugszeichen versehen. Die dargestellten Bestandteile sowie die Größenverhältnisse der Bestandteile untereinander sind nicht als maßstabsgerecht anzusehen.
Die in Figur 1 schematisch dargestellte Batteriezelle 10 ist bei dem hier gezeigten Ausführungsbeispiel eine prismatische Batteriezelle 10. Die Batteriezelle 10 weist ein Gehäuse 14 auf, das einen mechanisch festen Mantel für die darin angeordneten Zellschichten der Batteriezelle 10 ausbildet. In der Batteriezelle 10 können die Zellschichten beispielsweise als Zellstapel oder Zellwickel vorliegen. Das Gehäuse 14 weist bei dem Ausführungsbeispiel eine rechteckige Grundfläche auf und ist im Wesentlichen quaderförmig. Das Gehäuse 14 kann aus einem Metall oder einer Metalllegierung gebildet sein, vorzugsweise aus Aluminium. Es ist möglich, dass das Gehäuse 14 zumindest bereichsweise eine elektrisch isolierende Beschichtung aufweist. Die Batteriezelle 10 weist ein positives Terminal 11 und ein negatives Terminal 12 auf, wobei die Terminals 11, 12 beispielsweise an einem Deckel 6 des Gehäuses 14 angeordnet sind. Die Terminals 11, 12 sind zur elektrischen Kontaktierung der Pole des Zellstapels oder Zellwickels der Batteriezelle 10 vorgesehen. In der Figur 1 ist weiterhin eine an dem Deckel 6 des Gehäuses angeordnete Abdeckung 13 zu sehen, die beispielsweise im Bereich zwischen den elektrischen Terminal 11, 12 angeordnet ist. Unter der Abdeckung 13
kann eine Überdruck-Sicherheitsvorrichtung wie zum Beispiel eine Berstmembran angeordnet sein.
Die Figuren 2A und 2B zeigen in einer Explosionsdarstellung und in einem Querschnitt Details im Bereich des positiven Terminals 11. Das positive Terminal 11 weist eine elektrische Anschlussplatte 4 auf, die durch eine Niete 7 und eine Schmelzsicherung 2 mit einem Stromkollektor 9 des positiven Pols (Kathode) der Batteriezelle elektrisch leitend verbunden ist. Die mechanischen Verbindungen können beispielsweise durch Laserstrahlschweißen hergestellt werden. Zwischen der elektrischen Anschlussplatte 4 und dem Deckel 6 des Gehäuses 14 ist eine elektrisch isolierende Platte 5 angeordnet. In einer Ausnehmung der Anschlussplatte 4 ist eine ringförmige Isolierung 3 angeordnet, die einen direkten Kontakt zwischen der stromführenden Niete 7 und der Anschlussplatte 4 verhindert. Der Stromfluss vom Stromkollektor 9 zur Anschlussplatte 4 erfolgt über die Niete 7 und die darüber angeordnete Schmelzsicherung 2. Die Schmelzsicherung 2 weist vorzugsweise Aluminium auf oder besteht daraus.
Die Schmelzsicherung 2 hat bei der Batteriezelle 10 eine Sicherheitsfunktion. Wenn die Schmelzsicherung durchschmilzt, beispielsweise aufgrund eines zu hohen Stroms im Fall eines Kurzschlusses der Batteriezelle 10, ist die elektrisch leitende Verbindung zwischen dem Stromkollektor 9 und der Anschlussplatte 4 des positiven Terminals 11 unterbrochen.
Bei der Batteriezelle 10 ist die Schmelzsicherung 2 außerhalb des Gehäuses 14 an dem positiven Terminal 11 angeordnet. Auf diese Weise wird verhindert, dass das Material der Schmelzsicherung 2, beispielsweise Aluminium, beim Aufschmelzen in der Batteriezelle verteilt wird und mit den Materialien in der Batteriezelle reagiert. Das Risiko eines thermischen Durchgehens der Batteriezelle wird auf diese Weise vermindert.
Die Schmelzsicherung 2 ist vorteilhaft an einer von dem Gehäuse abgewandten Außenseite von einem Polymer 1, beispielsweise einem Epoxidharz, bedeckt. Das Polymer 1 kann zum Beispiel mit einem Spritzverfahren auf die Schmelzsicherung 2 aufgebracht werden. Durch das Polymer 1 wird verhindert, dass beim Aufschmelzen der Schmelzsicherung 2 ein Lichtbogen entsteht, insbesondere im Fall einer Anreicherung mit einem Oxidationsmittel unter der Bildung von nichtleitendem Material. Außerdem wir die Schmelzsicherung 2 von dem Polymer 1 vor mechanischer Beschädigung und Korrosion geschützt sowie die mechanische Stabilität erhöht.
Das Polymer 1 kann zur Verbesserung der Wärmeableitung mit mindestens einem Füllstoff (z.B. AI(OH)3 oder AI2O3) versetzt sein. Weiterhin ist es vorteilhaft, wenn der Füllstoff ein Oxidationsmittel enthält (z.B. Ammoniumperchlorat, NH4CIO4). Das Oxidationsmittel kann in diesem Fall mit dem verflüssigten Aluminium der Schmelzsicherung 2 zu nicht leitfähigem Aluminiumoxid (AI2O3) reagieren.
Bei einer bevorzugten Ausgestaltung ist der Deckel 6 des Gehäuses 14 von der Anschlussplatte 4 des positiven Terminals 11 elektrisch isoliert. Dies kann dadurch erreicht werden, dass eine Dichtung 8, die zwischen der elektrisch leitenden Niete 7 und dem Gehäusedeckel 6 angeordnet ist, einen elektrisch isolierenden Kunststoff aufweist. Auf diese Weise wird vermieden, dass ein Widerstand, der bei herkömmlichen Batteriezellen das Gehäuse mit dem positiven Terminal verbindet, im Fall einer zu hohen Stromstärke versagt. Wenn eine herkömmliche Batteriezelle in einem Batteriemodul mit weiteren Batteriezellen in Serie geschaltet ist, kann im Fall des Versagen des Widerstands durch die plötzliche Unterbrechung des Kontakts zwischen dem positiven Terminal und dem Gehäuse das Risiko bestehen, dass die Spannung mindestens einer benachbarten Batteriezelle an der Batteriezelle anliegt und für die betroffene Batteriezelle eine Polaritätsumkehr bewirkt. In diesem Fall würde ein negatives Potential an dem Gehäuse anliegen und könnte ungewollte chemische Reaktionen bewirken wie beispielsweise die Abscheidung von Lithium oder Kupfer in der Batteriezelle. Dies könnte zu einem inneren Kurzschluss der Batteriezelle führen. Durch die hier vorgeschlagene Isolierung des positiven Terminals 11 von dem Gehäuse 14, insbesondere durch die Dichtung 8, kann dieses Risiko vermindert werden.
Obwohl die Erfindung im Detail anhand von Ausführungsbeispielen illustriert und beschrieben wurde, so ist die Erfindung nicht durch die Ausführungsbeispiele eingeschränkt. Vielmehr können andere Variationen der Erfindung vom Fachmann hieraus abgeleitet werden, ohne den durch die Ansprüche definierten Schutzumfang der Erfindung zu verlassen.

Claims
1. Batteriezelle mit einer elektrischen Sicherung, wobei
- die elektrische Sicherung eine Schmelzsicherung (2) ist, die an einem Terminal (11) an einer Außenseite eines Gehäuses (14) der Batteriezelle (10) angeordnet ist, und
- die Schmelzsicherung (2) von einem Polymer (1) bedeckt ist.
2. Batteriezelle nach Anspruch 1 , wobei das Terminal (11) das positive Terminal ist.
3. Batteriezelle einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei das Polymer (1) mindestens einen Füllstoff zur Verbesserung der Wärmeableitung aufweist.
4. Batteriezelle nach Anspruch 3, wobei der Füllstoff AI(OH)3 oder AI2O3 aufweist.
5. Batteriezelle nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei das Polymer (1) mindestens einen Füllstoff enthält, der ein Oxidationsmittel ist.
6. Batteriezelle nach Anspruch 5, wobei der Füllstoff Ammoniumperchlorat aufweist.
7. Batteriezelle nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei das Terminal (11) von dem Gehäuse (14) elektrisch isoliert ist.
8. Batteriezelle nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 6, wobei zwischen dem Terminal (11) und dem Gehäuse (14) eine Dichtung (8) angeordnet ist, die einen elektrisch leitfähigen Kunststoff aufweist.
9. Lithium-Ionenbatterie, umfassend mehrere Batteriezellen (1) nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche.
10. Kraftfahrzeug, umfassend eine Lithium-Ionenbatterie nach Anspruch 9.
