Description

Underground collection box for parcels
The invention relates to an underground collection box for parcels. Collection boxes, for instance also referred to as parcel box, package box, delivery box or parcel drop box, are known for receiving parcels which cannot fit through a regular letterbox.
A drawback of known collection boxes is that the dimensions do not suffice for a great deal of the received parcels. The dimensions of existing collection boxes are limited in that these boxes must often be placed close to a front door. From both an aesthetic viewpoint and practical considerations such as the amount of space available near a front door, collection boxes rarely have the ability to receive multiple parcels, or to receive parcels with a smallest main dimension greater than ~25cm.
It is therefore an object of the invention to reduce or even prevent the above stated drawbacks.
This object is achieved according to the invention with an underground collection box for parcels comprising a bottom, upright walls and an upper wall which extends in an upper plane, which enclose an interior space for receiving parcels, which interior space is accessible through a closable opening, which opening connects to a shaft extending at least to the upper plane.
By placing the collection box underground a much larger interior space can be realized, without a corresponding amount of space being taken up near the front door. The interior space can be situated wholly or partially below ground level. The opening through which parcels can be placed in the collection box is accessible above ground.
The shaft can be very short and can for instance be formed by a border around the opening. The shaft can also be longer, when for instance only the shaft protrudes above ground level and the whole interior space is placed below ground level.
Because the opening is closable, unauthorized access to the interior space can be prevented. The interior space is thereby also prevented from weather influences such as precipitation and wind, among others.
The opening is preferably rectangular, so that the largest possible rectangular parcels will fit therethrough.
In a further embodiment of the collection box according to the invention the interior space comprises an inclining surface which extends between the opening and the bottom, which preferably extends from the opening to the bottom.
In order to prevent the contents of a parcel from being damaged due to having to bridge a height difference between the opening and the bottom of the collection box an inclining surface can be arranged between the opening and the bottom. A parcel can then slide down the inclining surface, whereby the vertical speed is reduced sufficiently to prevent damage to the parcel contents. The inclining surface preferably starts at the opening and continues to the bottom, so that there is no drop path whatsoever.
Another embodiment of the collection box according to the invention comprises a bottom plate which is disposed parallel to the bottom and is spring-mounted.
In order to prevent too great a mechanical shock when a parcel hits the bottom, the bottom can be provided with a damping device. For this purpose a bottom plate can be arranged which is spring-mounted relative to the bottom. The bottom plate can also or alternatively be a plate which is intrinsically resilient, i.e. elastic, and is arranged on the bottom, such as for instance a foam plate. In yet another embodiment of the collection box according to the invention a drainage gutter is arranged round the peripheral edge of the opening.
In order to prevent undesired entry of water, particularly when the opening is arranged at ground level, a gutter with which water can be discharged can be arranged round the peripheral edge of the opening.
In another embodiment of a collection box according to the invention the height of the bottom in the interior space can be varied.
By varying the height of the bottom in the interior space, the interior space can be adjusted in simple manner to the current degree of filling. The bottom can thus for instance be placed in the highest position when the interior space is still empty. This reduces the distance between the opening and the bottom, which increases the ease of placing a parcel and can also reduce the risk of damage to the parcel contents. The bottom can then be lowered as needed, for instance depending on the height of the parcels placed in the interior space.
In a preferred embodiment of a collection box according to the invention the closable opening comprises a lock.
Providing the closable opening with a lock can prevent undesired removal or placing of a parcel. The lock can for instance be unlocked by the parcel deliverer, or automatically on the basis of for instance recognition of an expected parcel on the basis of for instance a barcode or RFID tag.
Also according to the invention is an embodiment of a collection box wherein the collection box also comprises an alarm system for generating an alarm signal when a parcel is removed from the collection box. In cases in which it is undesirable for parcels to be removed from the interior space, such as for instance when the recipient is absent, an alarm can be generated when a parcel is removed from the collection box. Removal of a parcel can for instance be detected by optical detectors placed in the shaft.
The signalling used for the alarm can also be used to notify the recipient of changes, such as for instance that a parcel has been delivered.
The alarm system is preferably provided with a sensor for determining a signal which varies on the basis of the overall weight of the parcels situated in the interior space, which alarm system is configured to generate an alarm signal on the basis of the signal when the overall weight of the parcels situated in the interior space decreases.
A detection on the basis of the overall weight is inexpensive, simple and reliable. Because the weight of the parcels situated in the interior space is only expected to increase during delivery, an alarm can be generated in simple manner on the basis of a decrease in weight. The signal which varies on the basis of the weight must therefore be such that a change in weight can be detected. This need therefore not necessarily be an absolute weight detection. The signal can for instance be (inversely) proportional to the overall weight, but it can also have a proportional operating cycle related to the overall weight.
The undesired removal can be reacted to by generating an alarm. When noticeable on location, an alarm can also have a deterrent effect.
In another embodiment of a collection box according to the invention the interior space comprises at least two compartments .
By providing the interior space with compartments it can be made suitable for a plurality of parallel purposes. A compartment can thus for instance be allocated for parcels which are to be collected by a parcel service. When the collection box is provided with an alarm system, the relevant compartment can in such a case be excepted from alarm signalling.
At least one of the at least two compartments can preferably be closed independently.
The parallel functional uses can be differentiated further still by making the compartments independently closable. A compartment can thus be closed to a determined transporter. Or a compartment can be allocated to a second recipient.
In another preferred embodiment of a collection box according to the invention, the interior space is cooled.
By providing a cooled interior space the collection box can also be used to receive cooled goods, such as groceries, when the recipient is not at home.
Also according to the invention is an embodiment of a collection box wherein the collection box comprises a hatch for closing the opening.
By closing the opening with a hatch quick access can be gained to the whole passage of the opening. The hatch can for instance open and close in hydraulically or electrically powered manner.
The opening is preferably arranged parallel to the upper plane, preferably in the upper plane, and the hatch preferably comprises a side adjacent to the interior space and, lying opposite, an outer side, wherein the outer side is a walkable surface.
By arranging the hatch in or parallel to the upper plane the hatch can be placed flush with the ground level in simple manner. Because the outer side of the hatch is walkable, the hatch can serve for instance as a doormat. The doormat or the outer side can for instance be provided with a visible identifying mark for recognizing the collection box. Placing a collection box in the ground in front of a door, such as a front door, is particularly practical because this space is almost always still freely available. By making the upper side of the collection box and/or the hatch walkable the space in front of the door can be used as before after installation of the collection box.
These and other features of the invention are further elucidated with reference to the accompanying drawings.
