Definitions

  • the present invention relates to the field of disinfectants and more particularly relates to a hand sanitizer containing a combination of alcohol and zinc pyrithione.
  • This patent relates to hand disinfection compositions. These compositions are designed to disinfect body parts, such as the hands and forearms by various application means such as: spray and air dry, pre-moistened wipes, spray and wipe, flooding, blotting, scrubbing with or without water, and other means of application.
  • Most contemporary hand disinfectants on the market are effective only in the short-term and are designed for an immediate anti-microbial effect at time of application.
  • Most contemporary hand disinfectants are designed to disinfect clean hands; but they are not designed to disinfect hands contaminated with biological fluids such as saliva, blood, sweat, feces, urine, and other contaminants. Many contaminants are not readily visible on ordinary surfaces, including hands, and the clinician may be completely unaware that a hand requires the physical removal of these contaminants before an any effective type of disinfection can occur.
  • the present invention is to provide hand disinfection compositions that are designed to disinfect contaminated hands and provide a long term bacteriostatic and/or bactericidal effect, especially through cumulative use.
  • the present invention represents a departure from the prior art in that the disinfectants of the present invention allows for the combination of alcohols and zinc pyrithione as a synergistic antagonist to combat microbes in both the short and long-term; and as an effective means to disinfect contaminated surfaces, including hands.
  • Prior hand sanitizer formulations that have used zinc pyrithione have done so as an inactive preservative, whereas this present invention utilizes much higher concentration of dissolved zinc pyrithione as a primary long-term disinfectant.
  • an improved disinfectant may comprise a combination of alcohols and zinc pyrithione to accomplish its disinfecting objective.

  • Figure 2 is a schematic showing the hand surface of FIG. 1 after treatment by the hand sanitizer.
  • Alcohols and zinc pyrithione work together providing an enhanced effect against microbes, especially on contaminated hands.
  • the alcohol provides fluid mobility and a powerful short-term anti-microbial effect while the zinc pyrithione provides a broad spectrum anti-microbial hand effect over a longer term, especially after cumulative use. Together they provide a synergistic effect against a broad spectrum of microorganisms such as bacteria, spores, viruses, yeasts, fungi, and other microorganisms, and especially against hands that are contaminated with biological fluids.
  • the present invention utilizes liquid alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, isopropanol, t-butyl alcohol, and all other fluidic alcohols that have antimicrobial activity.
  • the present invention utilizes the salts of pyrithione, especially the zinc salt.
  • Zinc pyrithione is an inorganic salt that is an excellent broad-spectrum antimicrobial even at very low concentrations.
  • zinc pyrithione is nearly insoluble in water, with a solubility of about 8ppm.
  • zinc pyrithione is an inorganic salt, it does not evaporate along with the volatile alcohol solutions and remains on the hand after application. It is this thinly disseminated layer (20) that provides a long-term antimicrobial effect that is directly tied to the amount of zinc pyrithione dissolved in an alcohol/water admixture (10).
  • the benefit is further enhanced by repeated use on a surface, such as a user’s skin (30), as the disseminated layer (20) slowly accumulates in density, thus providing an improved bacteriostatic effect.
  • Water is essential for life and does not in the general sense have antimicrobial properties; nevertheless, water can increase the antimicrobial efficiency of alcohols.
  • Water has a slower evaporation rate than many volatile alcohols and when an admixture of water and volatile alcohols are utilized as a hand disinfectant, the azeotrope formed allows the solution to evaporate at a slower rate. This provides a prolonged contact time with the skin and therefore a correspondingly higher microbe kill rate from exposure to the alcohol.
  • solutions of water and alcohol also follow a law of diminishing returns with respect to antimicrobial efficiency.
  • the resultant deposition layer of zinc pyrithione serves as the primary long-term disinfectant on the surface, rather than merely an inactive preservative.

  • Another embodiment of the present invention prefers isopropanol in the range of 70%-100%; with any remaining being water, with the most preferred range being 70% isopropanol to 30% water and additives.

  • An embodiment of the present invention is the utilization of the present invention to make a short and long-term hand sanitizer or sanitizing lotion; wherein the mixed solution of 95% ethanol with 5% water and an addition of 50ppm zinc pyrithione is thickened by the addition of various thickeners and emollients.
  • These thickeners and emollients can comprise various hydrogels, emulsions, suspensions, creams, and soluble gels.
  • thickeners and emollients are within the scope of this patent such as glycerin, PEG, propylene glycol, polyethylene oxide, carboxypolymethylene, PVP, xanthum gum, methoxycellulose, polyethyloxazoline, polyvinyl alcohol, agarose, methylcellulose, polysaccharides, pectin, guar gum, locust bean gum, carrageenan, agar-agar, gelatin, salts of alginic acid, fumed silica, clay, chalk, fumed aluminum oxide, and any other useful rheological modifiers and emollients.
