Definitions
- the present invention relates to a display device and an optical element used in the display device.
- a display device called a head-up display has been proposed.
- a luminous flux is generally formed by converting the light emitted from each point of the image display element into parallel light by a collimator, and the luminous flux is introduced into the light guide. And enlarge it.
- Patent Document 1 includes a reflecting surface that reflects light incident from a collimator in a predetermined direction in a flat glass plate, and a plurality of beam splitters that are translucent with respect to visible light.
- a display device having a light guide is described.
- the light flux introduced into the light guide is set to be reflected in a direction satisfying the condition of total reflection at the interface between the flat plate and the outside.
- the luminous flux travels in a zigzag pattern while being repeatedly totally reflected in the light guide, and is incident on one of the beam splitters.
- the beam splitter In the beam splitter, a part of the incident light flux is reflected at the interface between the flat plate and the outside in a direction in which total reflection does not occur, so that the incident light flux is emitted from the interface between the flat plate and the outside to the outside of the flat plate. Other than that, it passes through the beam splitter.
- the luminous flux transmitted through the first beam splitter is incident on the second beam splitter, and a part of the light flux is reflected in the same direction as the light flux reflected by the first beam splitter and is emitted to the outside of the flat plate. Other than that, it passes through the beam splitter.
- An object to be solved by the present invention is to provide a display device capable of suppressing stray light incident on the eyes of an observer, and an optical element used in the display device.
- the display device made to solve the above problems is An image display element that displays the image to be displayed and A collimator that converts light emitted from each point on the image displayed on the image display element into a luminous flux of parallel light, and A first light guide made of a flat plate made of a first material that is transparent with respect to the luminous flux, A second light guide, which is made of a plate-like member made of a second material that is transparent with respect to the luminous flux, one surface of which is a flat surface in contact with one surface of the flat plate, and the other surface of which is a serrated surface.
- a beam splitter formed at the boundary between the first light guide and the flat surface of the second light guide, which transmits a part of the luminous flux and reflects the rest, is provided.
- the serrated surface is not parallel to the traveling direction of the luminous flux that passes through the boundary and travels through the second light guide, and is substantially parallel to the first surface that transmits the luminous flux and the traveling direction. It consists of alternating combinations of parallel second surfaces.
- the optical element for a display device is used in a display device that enlarges and displays an image based on a luminous flux obtained by converting light emitted from each point on an image displayed on the image display element into parallel light by a collimator. It is an optical element A first light guide made of a flat plate made of a first material that is transparent with respect to the luminous flux, A second light guide, which is made of a plate-like member made of a second material that is transparent with respect to the luminous flux, one surface of which is a flat surface in contact with one surface of the flat plate, and the other surface of which is a serrated surface.
- the second material may be the same as the first material.
- the "substantially parallel to the traveling direction" of the luminous flux is not limited to being strictly parallel to the traveling direction, and may be slightly inclined (for example, ⁇ 15 °) from the parallel.
- the luminous flux emitted from each point on the image displayed on the image display element and converted into parallel light by the collimator is incident on the beam splitter, and a part thereof is incident on the beam splitter. It passes through the beam splitter and emits light from the first surface of the second light guide. The remaining luminous flux reflected without passing through the beam splitter is reflected on the surface of the flat plate of the first light guide opposite to the beam splitter and is incident on another position of the beam splitter, and a part of it is incident on the other position of the beam splitter.
- the beam splitter It passes through the beam splitter and is emitted from a position on the first surface of the second light guide, which is different from the position where the luminous flux was first emitted. In this way, a part of the luminous flux is repeatedly transmitted and the remaining reflection is generated in the beam splitter, and the luminous flux transmitted through the first surface is emitted, so that the luminous flux from each point on the image is incident on the first light guide. It will be bigger than when. This expands the range in which the observer can see the image. Since the second surface is substantially parallel to the traveling direction of the light flux, it is possible to prevent the light flux from being blocked by the second surface, whereby the light flux that passes through the first surface and reaches the observer's eyes. It is possible to suppress the occurrence of partial shadows on the surface.
- the light (external light) incident on the serrated surface of the second light guide from the outside of the display device is second, after at least a part thereof is directly incident on the second surface or reflected by the first surface. Since it is incident on the surface and light is absorbed, reflected, diffused, dimmed, etc. on the second surface, it can be suppressed from being incident on the light guide. Therefore, it is possible to prevent the stray light, which is the light emitted outside the light guide after being incident on the inside of the light guide, from being incident on the observer's eyes.
