Description
PAPER PULP CUP LIDS WITH DOUBLE BUCKLE STRUCTURE AND ITS FORMING METHOD
FIELD
[0001] The present invention is related to paper pulp cup lids, in particular paper pulp cup lids formed by the thermoplastic moulding of pulp products. The paper-cup lid is provided with a unique double lock structure and forming method.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Single use disposable cups are an easy alternative to individuals for reasons of convenience and accessibility. Taking into consideration the costs and strength of various materials, the original disposal cups were made of plastic. The advantage of plastic is that it is able to provide sufficient strength despite how thin the product is, which provides convenience for those individuals who are after short-term use cups. Thus, it has become a standard material that many countries use, especially for disposable cups or tableware. However, plastic is unable to decompose, and incineration produces toxins. This acts as a serious threat to the environment and ecology as waste is generated extremely rapidly. The potential harm that plastic products could bring to the environment acted as an urge to minimise the use of such material and find alternatives.
[0003] With the implementation of regulations enforced by the government related to plastic, most disposable cup lids and tableware are now made of paper. Paper cups are easy to dispose of. This can be recycled and reused, which is beneficial for environmental protection. However, the disadvantage of paper cups in the past is that the strength is insufficient. This causes it to easily soften when it comes into contact with the beverage, causing the beverage to leak. With the advancement of technology, it is now a very popular product that is widely used around the world.
[0004] Following the wide use of paper cups, cup lids are also an indispensable product to seal the mouth of the cup to prevent beverages from leaking out. The evolution of the material used to produce cup lids is similar to disposable cups. At
present, plastic cup lids are still largely in use considering the cost and functionality when compared with other materials. Not only plastic cups, but also paper cups are being sealed with plastic cup lids, causing great harm to the environment.
[0005] For this reason, many people in the industry are still working hard to actively engage in the research, development and production of paper cup lids, anticipating a new discovery to completely replace plastic cup lids and achieve a complete combination for paper cups and paper cup lids.
[0006] To improve cup lids, it is necessary to start with identifying the structural characteristics of the existing cup lid. It is known that for the stability of the cup lid to properly lock with the cup, a flange is provided on the periphery of the cup mouth. A buckle portion is provided at that position, so that the buckle portion locks the flange to complete the combination of the cup lid and the cup. In this way, the flange should be as thick as possible in order to obtain a higher support force for the cup lid. Many cup lids seen in the market have a flange that is mostly have the structure of a cross section circular arc. The buckle portion of the cup lid should have a similar shape; with a thick flange with the buckle portion included to provide the best combination of cup lids and cups with a great locking mechanism.
[0007] However, in order to obtain the perfect arc-shaped flanges for paper cups, high-quality cardboard must be used for bonding and done so layer by layer. These cardboards are made of fresh wood fibres, that is, a large number of wooden pieces must be cut to make them. This acts as a threat to the balance of ecology and also increases production costs.
[0008] To achieve greater environmental protection, paper cups and paper cup lids can preferably use waste to generate pulp, such as bagasse. The paper pulp goes through a mould and heat press process that transforms the pulp into paper material. However, paper pulp cups are unable to form a thick arc-shaped structure around the periphery of the mouth of the cup and can only generate a thin and plate-like flange. Therefore, it is known that the paper pulp cup lids are unable to effectively lock onto the cups which causes accidental leakages of beverages.
[0009] In addition, it is known that the paper cup lids have poor thermal insulation, increasing the risk of getting burnt when the individual comes into contact with the paper cup lids. Another risk factor to take into consideration is the wide use of straws by individuals. Many users are used to using straws to drink from the cups through the small mouth on the cup lid. However, the likelihood of the user’s lips being burnt is also present.
[0010] Moreover, in order to save storage space and facilitate transportation, people are used to stacking beverages one by one when purchasing several cups of drinks. However, the shape of the paper cup lid is not conducive to the stacking of cups. Accidents such as the beverages tipping over or having to place each beverage in individual plastic bags can unknowingly have a negative impact on the environment.
[0011] It has been identified that the current paper cup lids still lack in some areas in terms of their structure and design. Thus, there needs to be an urge to improve such design for greater accessibility and provide a positive impact on the environment.
[0012] The main objective of the present invention is to provide paper cup lids with a double buckle structure, which comprises of a buckle portion attached to the cup lid for locking purposes at the edges of the cup by bending the buckle underneath the flanges. By double buckling the edges of the cup with the hood and buckling portion, this will provide greater stability and a better locking mechanism for the combination of paper pulp cup lids and paper pulp cups.
[0013] Another objective of the present invention is to provide paper pulp cup lids with a reinforced structure. The upper surface of the cup lid is designed with a double wall surface to enhance the strength of the paper pulp cup lid and also provide better heat insulation. This will thereby avoid and minimise the likelihood of accidents related to burns for the user.
[0014] An additional aim to the present invention is to provide greater convenience for the user. The top surface of the paper pulp cup lid is designed to have a circular storage slot, which is the same size as the bottom circumference of paper pulp cups.
This allows for stacking purpose, reduces the use of plastic bags and facilitates better accessibility for storage or transportation.
[0015] With regards to the improvement of design to the paper pulp cup lids; the contour portion protrudes, and a flange portion extends downward around the mouth edges of the paper pulp cup. The flange portion clamps the peripheral edge of the up mouth from the outside to the inside. The portion is convexly provided with a buckle portion from the cup lid. The hook is attached below the flange to form a hook shape and the buckling part to double lock the periphery of the cup mouth to obtain a more complete combination of paper pulp cups and cups lids with greater stability.
[0016] The buckle is directly bent along the flange portion of the cup, in order for the height of the hook to be similar to the buckle portion. When the buckle portion is attached to the flange, the buckle can simultaneously secure the hook.
[0017] Furthermore, the paper pulp cup lid is designed to have at least three buckles. It is distributed at an equal angle on the circumference of the flange portion of the paper pulp cup.
[0018] The buckle and hook portion of the cup lid are provided with more than one at different heights of the flange. This is to ensure that should any buckle portion or hook becomes loose; the other buckle portions or hooks are able to sustain the locking function of the paper pulp cup lids.
[0019] The buckle is designed to be straight or slightly upwards and buckles below the flange of the paper pulp cup lid.
[0020] The contour portion of the paper pulp cup lid is provided with one or more thickened walls to increase the strength and insulation effect.
[0021] In addition, the top surface of the contour portion of the paper pulp cup lid is provided with a storage slot. The storage slot is the same size as the bottom of paper pulp cups. This allows multiple cups to be stacked onto of each other for convenient storage or transportation.
[0022] In order to obtain the aforementioned paper pulp cup lid, the present invention provides a method for forming the paper pulp cup lid. The paper pulp cup lid is moulded from pulp and an outer mould is covered on the outside of the paper pulp cup lid with an inner mould housed inside. The shapes of both the outer and inner mould are accurately designed to perfectly match the paper pulp cup lid. The cup lid is provided with a buckle module on the outside of the flange portion. The buckle module is provided with a snap forming unit. When the buckle module presses the paper pulp cup lid, the snap forming unit cooperates with the inner mould to form a lock at the edge portion. A buckle is further provided below the buckle module and it presses the lower edge to bend and form a buckle lock.
[0023] In the method mentioned above, a bead is disposed in partial sections of the buckle module so that the paper pulp cup lid is formed with the buckle hooked only onto that specific area.
[0024] Alternatively, the bead is provided separately from the buckle module so that the buckle part is generated and then the bead is pushed out to bend out the buckle.
