Abstract
低結合損失、低反射減衰量かつ偏波依存損失の変動が少ない光接続を提供する。 光接続装置1が、端面11の法線11nがコア12に対してなす角度θが51°以上54°以下である光ファイバ10と、コア12を伝播して端面11により反射された光L2を受ける受光面22を有する受光素子20とを備える。受光面22の法線22nが、コア12と直交し、端面11が研磨によりコア12に対して傾斜している。
Description
本発明は、光ファイバを通過した光を光学素子に受光させる構造に関する。
従来より、光ファイバを通過した光を光学素子に受光させる構造が知られている(例えば、特許文献1、2、3および4を参照)。このような構造においては、光学素子の受光面に対して、光ファイバの端面を斜めにする。
しかしながら、上記のような従来技術は、低結合損失、低反射減衰量かつ偏波依存損失の変動が少ないという構造ではない。
そこで、本発明は、低結合損失、低反射減衰量かつ偏波依存損失の変動が少ない光接続の提供を課題とする。
本発明にかかる光接続装置は、端面の法線がコアに対してなす角度が51°以上54°以下である光ファイバと、前記コアを伝播して前記端面により反射された光を受ける受光面を有する受光素子とを備えるように構成される。
上記のように構成された光接続装置によれば、光ファイバが、端面の法線がコアに対してなす角度が51°以上54°以下である。受光素子が、前記コアを伝播して前記端面により反射された光を受ける受光面を有する。
なお、本発明にかかる光接続装置は、前記受光面の法線が、前記コアと直交するようにしてもよい。
なお、本発明にかかる光接続装置は、前記端面が研磨により前記コアに対して傾斜するようにしてもよい。
以下、本発明の実施形態を図面を参照しながら説明する。
図1は、本発明の実施形態にかかる光接続装置1の断面図である。本発明の実施形態にかかる光接続装置1は、光ファイバ10、受光素子20を備える。
光ファイバ10は、端面11、コア12、クラッド13を有する。コア12には、光L1が伝播して、端面11に向かう。端面11の法線11nがコア12に対してなす角度θが51°以上54°以下である。端面11は、例えば、光ファイバ10の端部が研磨されることによりコア12に対して傾斜する。なお、クラッド13はコア12を覆う。
受光素子20は、例えばフォトダイオードであり、コア12を伝播した光L1が、端面11により反射された光L2を受ける受光面22を有する。なお、受光面22の法線22nが、コア12と直交する。
なお、角度θは、受光面22の法線22nと、端面11とがなす角度でもある。
次に、本発明の実施形態の動作を説明する。
光L1がコア12を伝播して、端面11に向かう。光L1は、端面11により全反射される。この全反射された光を光L2という。光L2は、光ファイバ10のクラッド面でその一部が反射される(反射光L3)。さらにクラッド面を透過した光の一部が、受光面22により反射される(反射光L4)。ただし、光L2の多くが、クラッド面を透過し、受光面22に入射する。なお、反射光L3および反射光L4は、光ファイバ10の外部に逃げ、コア12には戻らない。
本発明の実施形態によれば、角度θが51°以上54°以下であるため、角度θが45°の場合と異なり、クラッド面での反射(反射光L3)が、光ファイバ10の外部に逃げて、コア12に戻らない。このため、コア12に戻る光のパワー(反射減衰量)は、ほぼ0となる。また、角度θが51°以上54°以下であるため、角度θが45°の場合と異なり、光L1が端面11により全反射されるため、結合損失を低くすることができる。偏波依存損失の変動は受光面22に垂直に光を入射した場合に最小になるが、入射角が20°程度とわずかであるため、変動は0.2dB未満とほとんど起こらない。
すなわち、本発明の実施形態によれば、低結合損失、低反射減衰量かつ偏波依存損失の変動が少ない光接続を提供できる。
図2は、角度θと、結合損失、反射減衰量および偏波依存損失変動との関係を示すグラフである。角度θが51°以上54°以下のときに、低結合損失、低反射減衰量かつ偏波依存損失の変動が少ないことが分かる。
ただし、偏波依存損失変動(PDL)は、以下のようにして求める。
まず、空気の屈折率をn1、受光素子20の屈折率をn2、受光面22への入射角をθ1、受光面22の屈折角をθ2とする。スネルの法則より、n1sinθ1=n2sinθ2である。
フレネルの式より、P波の反射RpおよびS波の反射Rsは、Rp=((n2cosθ1-n1cosθ2)/(n2cosθ1+n1cosθ2))2であり、Rs=((n1cosθ1-n2cosθ2)/(n1cosθ1+n2cosθ2))2である。
よって、入射角θ1における偏波回転による損失の変動(PDL)=-10log10(1-(Rs-Rp))[dB]である。ただし、角度θ[rad]=π/4+(1/2)sin-1((n1/nf)・sinθ1)である(ただし、nfは光ファイバ10のクラッドの屈折率)。
また、結合損失(LOSS)は、以下のようにして求める。
全反射角はsin-1(n1/nf)である。
光ファイバ10のビーム拡がり角(光パワーがピークの1/e2となる角度)は、tan-1(λ/(π・ω0・n1))である(ただし、ω0はモードフィールド半径、λは光L1の波長)。光L1を標準正規分布とみなすと、光パワーは(1/(2π)1/2)・exp(-x2/2)となる。これが、ピークの1/e2となるxは±2である。ただし、xはx方向(コア12の延伸方向)の座標である。
よって、受光素子20へ全反射する割合ηは、以下の式(1)のようになる。
これに、クラッド面での反射損を加味すると、結合損失(Loss)=-10log10(η×(1-((nf-n1)/(nf+n1))2))[dB]である。
反射減衰量(RL)は、以下のようにして求める。
dを光ファイバ10の直径とすると、クラッド面での反射の反射減衰量は、x方向のずれ2×(d/2)×tanθ1=dtanθ1、z方向(法線22nの延伸方向)のずれdのときの軸ずれ反射光結合効率にフレネル反射を乗じたものに近似できる。
よって、反射減衰量(RL)は、10log10(反射光結合効率×フレネル反射)であるところ、反射光結合効率=κexp((-κd2tan2θ1)/ω02)×η、フレネル反射=((nf-n1)/(nf+n1))2なので、RL=10log10(κexp((-κd2tan2θ1)/ω02)×η×((nf-n1)/(nf+n1))2)[dB]である。ただし、κ=4/(4+(λz/(πω02))2)である。
なお、図2においては、n1=1.0、n2=3.0、nf=1.4677、ω0=5[μm]、λ=1.31[μm]、d=125[μm]として上記の計算を行っている。
