Description

Catheter Extension for Peritoneal Dialysis and Method for Operating Catheter Extension Technical Field
The invention relates to a catheter extension for a peritoneal dialysis (PD) and a method for operating the catheter extension.
Background Art
A peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a procedure for removing toxic substances and metabolites normally removed by the kidneys, and for aiding in regulation of fluid and electrolyte balance. The procedure is accomplished by infusing PD solution through a conduit into the peritoneal cavity. Osmosis and diffusion occur across the peritoneal membrane between plasma of the patient and the solution.
A continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis is one form of PD that allows the patient to exchange the PD solutions 3-4 times per day. CAPD usually uses a double-bag system (one bag for the solution and a separate empty bag for the patient’s effluent) . The double-bag system provides a new solution bag and a new drainage bag for each treatment or exchange.
In addition, CAPD can also use a single-bag system, wherein only a solution bag is provided. The patient usually uses a used empty solution bag from a previous treatment or exchange as the drainage bag of a subsequent treatment or exchange.
An automatic peritoneal dialysis (APD) is another form of PD which is achieved by an automatic peritoneal dialysis machine.
For both CAPD (regardless of the double-bag system and the single-bag system) and APD, a catheter extension is usually needed to connect a catheter to be extended into the peritoneal cavity of the patient with a patient connector to be connected with a peritoneal dialysis bag system. During the dialysis process, the fresh PD solution flows from the peritoneal dialysis bag system into the peritoneal cavity of the patient through the catheter extension. After a prescribed period of time, a fluid with filtered waste products flows out of the peritoneal cavity through the catheter extension again and discarded.
In order to reliably and conveniently execute the peritoneal dialysis, some parameters and/or operations may be needed to be monitored or performed. Furthermore, further data management is also desired to facilitate the patient and the related persons with the progress of technology.
Therefore, there is a need to further improve the known catheter extension used for the PD.
