Description

HYDRO ALCOHOLIC INDUSTRIAL HAND CLEANER
RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0001] The present invention claims the benefits of, and priority to, U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 62/848,027 titled HYDROALCOHOLIC INDUSTRIAL HAND CLEANER, which was filed on May 15, 2019, and which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.
FIELD
[0002] The present disclosure relates to hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to industrial hand cleaner compositions containing one or more Ci-Cio alcohols, one or more carbomers, and suspended particulate abrasives. The compositions are dispensable via conventional pump dispensers, and remove industrial dirt and grime from the hands.
BACKGROUND
[0003] Skin cleansing compositions are generally used to clean the hands and arms of a user. However, conventional skin cleansing compositions may not be effective for use on heavily soiled hands. For example, in industrial or construction settings, hand cleansing may require removal of oil, grease, paint, dyes, tar, or heavy grime. In such situations, it is desirable to use a heavy-duty hand cleaner to effectively remove dirt and grime from the hands. Conventionally, the suspended particulate abrasives present in industrial hand cleaner compositions partially block, or clog, pump dispenser outlets, or damage pump components. However, the presence of such abrasives is perceived as necessary by users to remove industrial dirt and grime from the hands. SUMMARY
[0004] The general inventive concepts are directed to hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions containing suspended particulate abrasives. Despite the presence of the suspended particulate abrasives, the hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions are dispensable via conventional pump dispensers. The hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions contain one or more Ci-Cio alcohols, together with one or more carbomers.

[0031] The term“humectant,” as used herein, is not intended to be limiting, as some humectants may have dual purpose functionality within a formulation, including, for example, functionality as a skin conditioning agent and/or an emollient. As such, the terms“humectant” and“skin conditioner” may be used interchangeably.

More or less water may be required in certain instances, depending particularly on other ingredients and/or the amounts thereof employed.
[0036] The hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions of the present invention can further comprise a wide range of optional additives, with the proviso that they do not deleteriously affect the composition’s ability to remove dirt and grime from hands. The CTFA International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary and Handbook, Eleventh Edition 2005, and the 2004 CTFA International Buyer's Guide, describe a wide variety of non-limiting cosmetic and pharmaceutical ingredients commonly used in the skin care industry, that are suitable for use in the compositions of the present invention. Nonlimiting examples of functional classes of ingredients are described at page 537 of this reference. Examples of these functional classes include: abrasives, anti-acne agents, anticaking agents, antioxidants, antipruritics, binders, biological additives, bulking agents, chelating agents, chemical additives, colorants, cosmetic astringents, cosmetic biocides, denaturants, drug astringents, external analgesics, film formers, fragrance components, opacifying agents, plasticizers, preservatives (sometimes referred to as antimicrobials), propellants, reducing agents, skin bleaching agents, skin protectants, solvents, foam boosters, hydrotropes, solubilizing agents, suspending agents (nonsurfactant), sunscreen agents, ultraviolet light absorbers, detackifiers, and viscosity increasing agents (aqueous and nonaqueous). Examples of other functional classes of materials that may be useful herein include solubilizing agents, sequestrants, keratolytics, topical active ingredients, and the like. In some embodiments, the hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions comprise one or more of a fragrance component and a colorant. Exemplary colorants include, but are not limited to, titanium dioxide.
[0037] In accordance with the present disclosure, the hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions may have a pH of from 4 to 9. In some embodiments, the hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions may have a pH of from 4.5 to 8. In some embodiments, the hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions may have a pH of from 5 to 7.
[0038] In accordance with the present disclosure, the hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions may have a viscosity of from 5,000 to 60,000 centipoise at 20 °C. In some embodiments, the hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions may have a viscosity of from 10,000 to 50,000 centipoise at 20 °C. In some embodiments, the hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions may have a viscosity of from 15,000 to 45,000 centipoise at 20 °C. The viscosity of samples in accordance with the present disclosure were measured using very low shear viscometer such as Brookfield LVDV-I+ viscometer and T spindles with a heliopath adapter. Unless stated otherwise, the measured viscosity is that of the final composition.
[0039] One advantage of the disclosed hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions is the ability to dispense the compositions via conventional pump dispensers. Conventionally, the suspended particulate abrasives present in industrial hand cleaner compositions partially block, or clog, pump dispenser outlets or cause premature failure of the pump components. This is due to the high density of conventional suspended abrasives, such as pumice, which result in a high viscosity product that is difficult to pump. However, the presence of abrasives is perceived as necessary by users to remove industrial dirt and grime from the hands. By utilizing walnut suspended particulate abrasives, which have a lower density than pumice, the disclosed hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions are pumpable, while still maintaining a desirable high level of suspended particulate abrasives.
[0040] Another advantage of the disclosed hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions is the ability to provide equal or faster cleaning in the absence of conventional petroleum-based ingredients such as, e.g., petroleum distillates. In some embodiments, disclosed hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions may be devoid of petroleum-based ingredients. Compositions excluding such ingredients do not have a base odor like petroleum- based products, and thus the compositions may be fragrance-free, or may more easily be formulated with a pleasing fragrance. Further, petroleum-based ingredients have a distinct greasy after-feel, which is avoided in the present hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions. In addition to the aesthetic benefits, the exclusion of petroleum-based ingredients such as petroleum distillates offers improved an environmental impact, including, for example, eliminating the reliance upon non-renewable crude oil and petroleum.
[0041] A further advantage of the disclosed hydroalcoholic industrial hand cleaner compositions is the compatibility of the compositions with conventional industrial hand cleaner packaging. Some conventional industrial hand cleaners utilize soy-based solvents, such as soy methyl esters, which are known to interact with the plastic packaging of such industrial hand cleaners. For example, the interaction between soy methyl ester solvents and HDPE plastic packaging has been shown to create an undesirable greasy or oily film on such products. The exclusion of such soy-based solvents in the industrial hand cleaners disclosed herein alleviates these observed packaging issues.
