Abstract

Petroleum coke-based feed material is gasified with steam to hydrogen rich gaseous mixture in a reactor system comprising two different continuously operated fluidized bed reactors. In the first, robust reactor, the coke is gasified thermally in the presence of steam and oxygen at a relatively low temperature, below 1000°C, sufficient to achieve 75-85% carbon yield. Entrained fines containing 15-25% of feed carbon are separated, combined with the char withdrawn at the bottom of the reactor, impregnated with an alkali metal compound or alkaline earth metal compound or their mixture that catalyze gasification reaction, and then gasified catalytically in the second reactor at 730-770°C. Total carbon conversion to a gaseous product mixture with 61-66v/v% hydrogen content is 95-98%.
