Septoria tritici ( Zymoseptoria tritici) is a species of filamentous fungus. It is a cereal plant patho gen causing septoria leaf blotch that is difficult to control especially due to resistance to multiple fungicides. The pathogen today causes one of the most feared diseases of wheat.
Not less feard are the cereal rust diseases caused by Puccinia spp., e. g. brown or leaf rust caused P. triticina or P. recondita ; stripe or yellow rust caused by P. strihformis ; dwarf rust caused by P. hordei and stem or black rust caused P. graminis. The Puccinia spp cause rust epidemics causing significant loss of cereal yields. Control of Septoria leaf blotch and cereals rusts is becoming more and more difficult for farmers. In order to reduce crop losses and to obtain optimal crop yield proper pest management is required.
There is therefore an urgent need for methods to control both kinds of diseases. Said methods shall minimise the chances of further resistance developing to Septoria tritici or overcome such upcoming resistance.
Surprisingly, we have found that the application of compositions comprising mefentrifluconazole ans at least one compound (II) as defined herein shows an unexpected fungicidal action towards Septoria tritici and Puccinia spp. The unexpected fungicidal action is also observed against Septoria tritici being resistant against azole fungicides.
Thus, the present invention relates to a method for controlling a phythopatogenic fungi selected from Septoria tritici and Puccinia spp. on cereals, comprising treating the plants, their seed or the soil with a fungicidally effective amount of a composition comprising

The term "plant propagation material" is to be understood to denote all the generative parts of the plant in particular seeds
Plants and as well as the propagation material of said plants, which can be treated with fungi- cidally effective amount of a composition comprising mefentrifluconazole (I) and at least one compound (II) as described herein include all genetically modified plants or transgenic plants, e.g. crops which tolerate the action of herbicides or fungicides or insecticides owing to breeding, including genetic engineering methods, or plants which have modified characteristics in compar ison with existing plants, which can be generated for example by traditional breeding methods and/or the generation of mutants, or by recombinant procedures.
For example, mixtures according to the present invention can be applied (as seed treatment, spray treatment, in furrow or by any other means) also to plants which have been modified by breeding, mutagenesis or genetic engineering including but not limiting to agricultural biotech products on the market or in development (cf.
http://www.bio.org/speeches/pubs/er/agri_products.asp). Genetically modified plants are plants, which genetic material has been so modified by the use of recombinant DNA techniques that under natural circumstances cannot readily be obtained by cross breeding, mutations or natural recombination. Typically, one or more genes have been integrated into the genetic material of a genetically modified plant in order to improve certain properties of the plant. Such genetic modi fications also include but are not limited to targeted post-transitional modification of protein(s), oligo- or polypeptides e. g. by glycosylation or polymer additions such as prenylated, acetylated or farnesylated moieties or PEG moieties.
For use according to the present invention, a composition comprising mefentrifluconazole (I) and at least one compound (II) as described herein can be converted into the customary formu lations, for example solutions, emulsions, suspensions, dusts, powders, pastes and granules. The first two developed leaves of pot-grown wheat seedling were dusted with spores of Puccin ia recondita. To ensure the success the artificial inoculation, the plants were transferred to a humid chamber without light and a relative humidity of 95 to 99 % and 20 to 24°C for 24 h. The next day the plants were cultivated for 2 days in a greenhouse chamber at 20-24°C and a rela tive humidity between 65 and 70 %. Then the plants were sprayed to run-off with an aqueous suspension, containing the concentration of active ingredient or their mixture as described be low. The plants could air-dry. The extent of fungal attack on the leaves was visually assessed as % diseased leaf area.
4. Preventative control of brown rust on wheat caused by Puccinia recondita (Puccrt P6)
The first two developed leaves of pot-grown wheat seedling were sprayed to run-off with an aqueous suspension, containing the concentration of active ingredient or their mixture as de scribed below. Seven days later the plants were inoculated with spores of Puccinia recondita.
To ensure the success the artificial inoculation, the plants were transferred to a humid chamber without light and a relative humidity of 95 to 99 % and 20 to 24°C for 24 h. Then the trial plants were cultivated for 5 days in a greenhouse chamber at 20-24°C and a relative humidity between 65 and 70 %. The extent of fungal attack on the leaves was visually assessed as % diseased leaf area.
The measured parameters were compared to the growth of the active compound-free control variant (100%) and the fungus-free and active compound-free blank value to determine the rela tive growth in % of the pathogens in the respective active compounds. These percentages were converted into efficacies. An efficacy of 0 means that the growth level of the pathogens corre sponds to that of the untreated control; an efficacy of 100 means that the pathogens were not growing.
The expected efficacies of active compound mixtures were determined using Colby's formula [R.S. Colby,“Calculating synergistic and antagonistic responses of herbicide combinations", Weeds 15, 20-22 (1967)] and compared with the observed efficacies.
