Definitions

  • Embodiments of the present invention generally relate to the field of pesticidal formulations, and, more particularly, to a synergistic and stable pesticidal granular formulation.
  • pesticides are substances meant to control pests or weeds.
  • the Food and Agriculture Organization has defined a pesticide as,“any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying, or controlling any pest, including vectors of human or animal disease, unwanted species of plants or animals, causing harm during or otherwise interfering with the production, processing, storage, transport, or marketing of food, agricultural commodities, wood and wood products or animal feedstuffs, or substances that may be administered to animals for the control of insects, arachnids, or other pests in or on their bodies”.
  • the term further includes substances intended for use as a plant growth regulator, defoliant, desiccant, or agent for thinning fruit or preventing the premature fall of fruit.
  • Pesticides are also used as substances that are applied to crops either before or after harvest to protect the commodity from deterioration during storage and transport.
  • Emamectin benzoate is widely used in the United States of America and Canada as an insecticide because of its chloride channel activation properties.
  • Emamectin benzoate works as a chloride channel activator by binding gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) receptor and glutamate-gated chloride channels disrupting nerve signals within arthropods.
  • GABA gamma amino butyric acid
  • the compound stimulates the release of GABA from the synapses between nerve cells and while additionally increasing GABA’s affinity for its receptor on the post-junction membrane of muscle cells in insects and arthropods.
  • the stronger binding of GABA increases the cells permeability to chloride ions within the cell due to the hypotonic concentration gradient. Neurotransmission is thereby reduced by subsequent hyperpolarization and the elimination of signal transduction.
  • Profenofos can be used on a variety of crops including cotton and vegetables such as maize, potato, soybean, and sugar beet. In the United States, it is used exclusively on cotton and is primarily
  • Profenofos is available in market as emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulation and ultra-low volume liquid (UL) formulation. Profenofos is also available in mixture with cypermethrin, beta-cypermethrin, phoxim, imidacloprid and deltamethrin. Profenofos is a non-systemic insecticide. Profenofos can be used against cotton mealybug, cabbage caterpillar, plutella xylostella and asparagus caterpillars, as well as against wheat and cabbage aphids.
  • Profenofos mechanism of action is via the inhibition of the acetyl cholinesterase enzyme.

  • an active substance when an active substance is in a liquid state at ambient temperatures, then it has been formulated in a number of ways that to varying extents, so that formulated products are adapted for ease of transport, handling and application. It is generally desirable with these various formulations that the active substance be delivered in the form of an aqueous spray. Examples of types of formulations that may be applied in this manner are emulsifiable concentrates (EC), suspension concentrates (SC) and oil dispersion (OD) etc. Limitations of EC and OD formulations include the dangers in packaging, storing and handling highly flammable solvents. SC formulations can have storage problems and are difficult to clean up after spillage.
  • Wettable granule (WG) or Water dispersible granule (WDG) formulations offer significant advantages in packaging, ease of handling and safety.
  • these consist of small granules and preferably of uniform size and which are free flowing, low dusting and readily disperse in water to form homogenous suspension of very small particles that may pass through conventional spray nozzles.

  • this prior art is claiming specifically azamethiphos, cypermethrin high-cis and fenoxycarb in combination with Emamectin benzoate. Therefore, this prior art is not specifically for Profenofos in combination with Emamectin benzoate. Also, liquid active ingredient like Profenofos in the synergistic, stable and safe wettable granule formulation of the instant invention is present in higher amount in comparison to this prior art. Even due to presence of higher amount of liquid active ingredient like Profenofos, the granules of present invention are dustless and free flow with other advanced quality of formulation, which is a technically advanced step in comparison to this prior art.

  • Indian Patent Application No. IN 705/DEL/2013 discloses an insecticidal composition of Emamectin benzoate amount ranging from 0.5 to 3% by weight and thiamethoxam amount ranging from 10-15% by weight of the composition, here both active ingredients are in solid form, thus it is easy to prepare granular formulation of solid active ingredients, rather this document is not specifically describing synergistic and stable wettable granule formulation comprising Emamectin benzoate and Profenofos, having water content less than 3.0%. Also, one of the active ingredient Profenofos, of present invention is in liquid form, thus it is a technically advance step to prepare its granular formulation having its broader synergistic amount in comparison to prior art.
  • Indian Patent IN 263280 discloses the process for the preparation of water dispersible granular formulation where suspension concentrate or dispersion of solid active ingredient was done which then be granulated. Further on this granule, the emulsifiable solution of liquid active ingredient is absorbed i.e. sprayed. This whole process is lengthy and also even spraying of emulsifiable solution of liquid active ingredient is not environmentally friendly.

  • PCT Patent Application No. WO/2017/180658 A1 discloses EC formulations (emulsifiable concentrate) comprising 10-40% by weight of one or more actives among the organophosphates. Profenofos is not disclosed in the specification of this document. Further, due to use of organic solvent EC formulation causes environmental pollution and phytotoxicity to plants. Accordingly, there exists a need in the art for developing a suitable wettable granule composition comprising two or more active ingredients, because the use of instant granular formulation is less risky for farmers then the corresponding liquid formulation, as the exposure to hazardous chemicals gets reduced. However, the solid pesticidal composition such as wettable granule (WDG or WG) containing combination of agriculture actives with different mode of action can be difficult to produce.
  • WDG or WG wettable granule
  • solid formulation such as wettable granule typically requires the active ingredients to be in the form of appropriate dispersed particle in order to achieve optimal suspensibility in water.
  • direct grinding of the discrete solid of that active ingredient can be difficult due to melting or softening of the active ingredient itself during grinding when subject to range of temperature and shear stress which is normally encountered during processing and storage.
  • the storage stability of granule formulation containing low melting active ingredient or liquid active ingredient in the form of solid particles can be negatively impacted by the tendency of the solid particles to soften and then coalesce or agglomerate into large particles.
  • Such physical instability can lead to granule formulation that does not disperse well in water and forms unstable suspension that delivers substandard biological efficacy due to poor delivery on target locus of the pests after application.
