Definitions
- the present invention relates to containment devices and in particular to devices for independently containing multiple substances such as pills and other medications.
- Treatment of the common cold may involve the administration of two distinct medications; one for administration during the day, and one for administration during the night.
- some manufacturers provide so called “day time tablets” along with so called “night time tables”.
- each tablet is stored in separate blister capsules within a blister pack.
- Blister packs are useful for separating distinct types of medication, such as day time tablets from night time tablets, but the blister capsules themselves may be fragile, and unless the blister pack is carefully stored, the seals of the blister capsules may break and expose or release its contents. This may occur, for example, when the blister pack is stored in a handbag or a suitcase.
- Blister packs may also be difficult to manipulate if a user wishes to isolate one type of medication from another, for example, if the user is travelling during the day and only requires day time tablets for their travels. To isolate specific medication units from a blister pack may require scissors and/or masterful dexterity.
- a containment device comprising: a pair of containers each container comprising a base and a side wall extending from the base to define an open top; a pair of lids each lid being applicable to the open top of a respective container; and a connector for reversibly interconnecting the containers from a separated configuration to a connected configuration in which the containers are oppositely facing and the open tops are located at distal ends of the device.
- the connector may be reversibly connectable to a portion of the sidewall adjacent the base of at least one said container.
- the connector is reversibly connectable to a portion of the sidewall adjacent the base of both said containers.
- the containers are reversibly inter-connectable by threaded engagement.
- the sidewall of each container includes an external threaded portion adjacent the base for threaded engagement with an internal threaded portion of the connector.
- the containers may be substantially coaxial in the connected configuration.
- each container is preferably circular.
- the containers are right cylinders.
- the containers may be substantially symmetrical.
- the dual containment device may be formed of a plastics material.
- each container has a volume of between about 50 ml_ and 150 mL.
- the dual containment device comprises a label or indicia.
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dual containment device according to the invention in a connected configuration
- Figure 2 is a side view (A) and a sectional view (B) of the of the dual containment device in a connected configuration;
- Figure 3 is a perspective view (A), a side view (B) and a sectional view (C) of a container with an attached lid;
- Figure 4 is a perspective view of a lid
- Figure 5 is a perspective view of a connector.
- a dual containment device 1 comprising: a pair of containers 2; each container comprising a base 3 and a side wall 4 extending from the base to define an open top 5; a pair of lids 6 each lid being applicable to the open top of a respective container; and a connector 7 for reversibly interconnecting the containers from a separated configuration to a connected configuration as shown in figures 1 and 2 in which the containers are oppositely facing and the open tops 5 are located at distal ends of the device.
- the connector 7 is reversibly connectable to a portion of the sidewall 4 adjacent the base 3 of both containers, and in the connected configuration, the containers are substantially coaxial.
- the connector may be reversibly connectable to only one container.
- the connector may be fixed to one container, for example, at a region on or adjacent the base, and reversibly connectable to the other container at a region on or adjacent the base.
- each container 2 includes an external threaded portion 8 adjacent the base 3 for threaded engagement with an internal threaded portion 9 of the connector 7.
- the containers 2 can therefore be brought into threaded engagement with the connector 7 such that the containers are oppositely facing with their open tops 5 located at distal ends of the device 1.
- the connector may take a variety of different forms. For example, neither the containers nor the connector must include a threaded portion.
- the connector may be dimensioned such that it fits snuggly over both containers, or only one container if the connector is fixed to the other container. In such embodiments, the container(s) may be slideably engageable with the connector.
- the connector may be reversibly connectable to one or both containers by a snap-locking mechanism.
- the snap-locking engagement may be triggered by pushing the two containers together, in a base-to-base orientation, optionally with the addition of a twisting forcing depending on the snap-locking mechanism.
- the connector may take a variety of other forms.
- the lids may be attachable to the containers in a variety of different forms.
- the sidewall of each container includes an external threaded portion adjacent the open top for threaded engagement with an internal threaded portion of a respective lid.
- the lids may be attachable to the containers by snap-locking engagement. Those skilled in the art will understand that the lids may take a variety of other forms.
- each container 2 is circular, and comprises a raised centre portion 10 with a peripheral foot 11.
- the containers are substantially symmetrical right cylinders.
- the containers may take a variety of different forms and shapes, with the connector and lids being dimensioned accordingly.
- the sidewall of each container includes a planar portion.
- the containers may be rectilinear. In such embodiments, the containers may be less likely to roll when laid longitudinally on their side wall.
- the device 1 is preferably formed of a plastics material.
- the device may be formed of material comprising high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride or polycarbonate. It will be understood that the device may be formed from other suitable materials.
- each container may be suitable for containing a variety of different substances such as food, medication, liquids, jewellery, personal accessories and so on.
- the volume of the containers may be influenced by the items that are to be placed in them.
- each container has a volume of between about 50 mL and 150 mL, and may be suitable for containing medication such as tablets, capsules or pills.
- each container has a volume of between about 20 mL and 500 mL, such as between about 50 mL and 150 mL or between about 75 mL and 125 ml_ such as about 80 mL or about 100 mL In certain embodiments, each container has a volume of less than 50 mL such as about 40 mL, 30 mL, 20 mL, 10 mL or less. In other embodiments, each container has a volume of more than 150 mL such as about 200 mL, 300 mL, 400 mL, 500 mL, 1000 mL, 2000 mL, 3000 mL, 4000 mL or more.
- the device may comprise a label or indicia, which may be present anywhere on the device such as on the containers or their lids.
- the label or indicia may indicate the nature of the substance inside each container.
- one container may comprise indicia signifying "day time tablets” while the other comprises indicia signifying "night time tablets”.
- one container may comprise indicia signifying "morning vitamins” while the other comprises indicia signifying "evening vitamins”.
- each container may sit upright on its base or on its lid.
- the device may also sit upright on the lid of a container.
