Definitions
- This invention relates to an interactive method of capturing images of documents, and to a system for analysing captured images of such documents.
- the invention is particularly applicable to banknotes, though it may also be used to capture and analyse other documents of value and government issued documents, such as identification cards.
- Another previously proposed system disclosed in CN106846603 relates to a method and device for identifying the authenticity of a banknote which involves acquiring images in the region of the serial number of the note, and judging whether the acquired image information is consistent with other notes.
- This method requires the user to be suspicious of the note in the first place and provides no other motivation to capture the image. It focuses only on a specific regions of interest. It also does not show how to take a consistent image and therefore the ability to really discern the validity of the document is in question. Further, it does not allow for nor direct the output for quality metrics or the history of a document to be discerned or documented.
- a template of a document of value to a handheld image capture device, wherein the handheld image capture device has a display screen and a camera;
- the template preferably includes at least one image of the document of value.
- the template may include a plurality of images of the document of value, such as images of the document from different sides, or images of different areas of the document. This is particularly useful in the case of banknotes and the like which have different designs on the obverse and reverse sides, and which may have different security features in different areas of the banknote. This enables two or more digital photographs of different sides and/or areas of the banknote to be taken by the handheld image capture device and transmitted to the remote storage system for analysis.
- the steps of comparing the generated image of the document of value with the template and activating the camera to take a digital photograph of the document of value may be carried out by the user of the handheld image capture device.
- the handheld image capture device may be programmed to compare the generated image of the document of value with the template automatically, for example using artificial intelligence (Al) techniques.
- Al artificial intelligence
- the template preferably includes a frame of the document of value. This assists in guiding the user of the handheld image capture device to locate the generated image within the frame of the template.
- the handheld image capture device may be programmed to activate the camera automatically to take the digital photograph when the generated image substantially matches the image of the template, and/or when the generated image fits within the frame of the template.
- the handheld image capture device may be programmed such that it compares the photograph of the document of value with the template
- the template may include one or more visual indicators which indicate to the user the orientation and position of the document of value relative to the handheld image capture device.
- the visual indicators may indicate horizontal and vertical positions of the document of value relative to the handheld image capture device.
- the handheld image capture device may be programmed to transmit additional data to the remote storage system together with the digital photograph of the document of value.
- the additional data may include one of more of the following: quality data relating to the wear and/or age of the document; the time when the digital photograph was taken; the geographical location where the digital photograph was taken; the time taken to capture the photograph; a user identifier for the owner of the handheld image capture device; and a unique identifier of the document of value.
- the handheld image capture device may be programmed to identify a unique identifier of the document of value.
- the method of capturing an image of a document of value for analysis in accordance with the first aspect of the invention may form part of a competition or game or a currency educational program.
