Description

Shelf-Life Extending sheet for Fresh Fruits, Vegetables and Flowers and a process for preparation thereof
FIELD OF INVENTION [001] This invention is directed to shelf-life extending sheet for fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers and a process for preparation thereof.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[002] Background description includes information that may be useful in understanding the present invention. It is not an admission that any of the information provided herein is prior art or relevant to the presently claimed invention, or that any publication specifically or implicitly referenced is prior art.
[003] The percentage of wastage of fruits, vegetables and flowers is quite high owing to varying temperature conditions, improper storage and handling conditions, distance from the farm to retail and also the long time period involved in the distribution.
[004] Hence, the task of shelf life extension of perishable products is required to be undertaken. [005] Current method includes placement of ethylene adsorbant pouches along with the fresh produce. These only work by absorbing ethylene and provide limited coverage just around the pouch. [006] The pouch also provides limited surface area for adsorption of ethylene as it contains granules or beads of ethylene absorbant media tightly packed together in a sachet providing a total surface area which gets highly reduced when such granules or beads are tightly packed.
[007] Other method involves keeping fresh produce in controlled atmospheres during shipping and monitoring ethylene content in the air.
[008] Thus, the known arts involve some limitations.
[009] In view of the above, it is required to devise an alternative provision so as to address the aforesaid issues and serve the purpose effectively.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
[0010] The primary object of the present invention is to provide shelf-life extending sheet for fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers and a process for preparation thereof which overcomes disadvantages of the prior arts.
[0011] Another object of the present invention is to provide shelf- life extending sheet for fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers and a process for preparation thereof which effectively serves the purpose by extending life of fresh fruits and vegetables by upto three times or more comparatively. [0012] Still another object of the present invention is to provide shelf-life extending sheet for fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers and a process for preparation thereof which is user friendly. [0013] Yet another object of the present invention is to provide shelf-life extending sheet for fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers and a process for preparation thereof which is cost effective.
[0014] These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which a preferred form of the present invention is illustrated. [0029] The present invention teaches a technology regarding shelf- life extending sheet for fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers. Said sheet comprising a substrate coated with atleast one chemical selected from ethylene adsorbers, Ethylene oxidizers, carbon dioxide releasers, oxygen absorbers or reducers, microbial/ bio inhibitors and moisture absorbers. The coated substrate can be over-coated with a coat to prevent direct contact of chemicals with food according to first embodiment of present invention.
[0030] The chemicals can also be encapsulated or sandwitched between multiple layers of substrate.
[0031] Here, the sheet can be treated or loaded with multiple chemicals each providing a specific functionality thereto. The chemicals also can be used singularly or in any combination thereof.
[0032] Thus, the present invention introduces a single product that enhances shelf life of fresh produce by multiple actions of the chemicals applied. The chemicals can be selected from the above to perform just one function or multiple functions depending upon the requirement for a specific application.
[0033] The substrate can be selected from paper, plastic, cardboard sheets, fabric (non woven fabric or woven fabric made from natural or man made fibers) or any other material suitable for the purpose of coating and employed as a carrier for the chemicals. The substrate may range in thickness preferably from 10 microns to 300 microns or from 10 gsm to 10000 gsm. [0034] The substrate can be coated with ethylene adzorbers to absorb ethylene, oxidizing agents to oxidize ethylene, bio inhibitors to release microbial inhibitors and prevent fungal or bacterial spoilage, carbon dioxide releasers to slow down the oxidation rate by having a high CO2 atmosphere, oxygen absorbers or oxygen reducing agents to reduce surrounding O2 levels and moisture absorbers to reduce moisture which can also cause faster spoilage of the produce when these chemicals come in contact with moisture, O2, CO2 or ethylene within the enclosed packaging.
[0035] The process involves coating the substrate using a methodology including gravure, sprayjet, brush applied, dipping or any other coating that can be implemented to coat the chemicals on paper.
[0036] Further, according to second embodiment the chemical combination selected can be mixed in water, solvent, adhesive or any other carrier and applied on said carrier substrate as a coat.
[0037] In accordance with third embodiment of present invention, the chemical combination can also be mixed in pulp in the course of manufacturing of the substrate. Thus, the chemical(s) are impregnated in the substrate during manufacturing.
[0038] In accordance with the fourth embodiment of the present invention, the chemical combination can also be sandwitched or encapsulated in between plurality of substrates.
[0039] The coating or dosing can range from 0.1 grams per square meter to 500 grams per square meter depending upon the end use such as type of fresh produce and time period of protection.
[0040] The coated/ impregnated substrate thus obtained is further coated with the coat as in first embodiment so as to prevent direct contact of chemicals with food. [0041] The over-coat includes a polymer film or aluminum film or another sheet of paper or a breathable/non breathable substrate so that these chemicals do not come in direct contact with food. [0042] The encapsulated chemical within the substrate is also arranged so that the chemicals do not come in direct contact with the food products.

[0043] The novel shelf Life Extending sheet provides higher surface area, requires lesser space for installation, is available in different sizes and proves to be cost effective. [0044] The shelf life extension sheet is capable of extending the life of fresh fruits and vegetables by up to 3 times or more compared to unprotected storage. Applications
[0045] The sheet can be either used to completely wrap the fresh produce, or the said shelf life extending sheet can be placed below or above the fresh produce in a box from where it is able to function within the package’s environment or just dropped as a small strip/strips within the packet or box of fresh produce.
