Abstract

The present invention belongs to the cosmetic field and relates to a clear cosmetic composition containing, based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition, at least one antiperspirant active ingredient, from 10% to 50% by weight of ethanol, from 1.0% to 5% by weight of a mixture consisting of at least one quaternary ammonium compound and at least one anionic surfactant.

Description

Clear hydro-alcoholic roll-on formulation
The present invention belongs to the cosmetic field and relates to a hydro-alcoholic antiperspirant composition. Due to the presence of a quaternary ammonium compound and an anionic surfactant clear hydro-alcoholic antiperspirant cosmetic compositions can be provided.
Antiperspirant products are commonly applied to the axillary region of the human body to prevent and/or reduce the sweat production. Technically this effect is achieved by antiperspirant active ingredients blocking the sweat glands. Most commonly, those antiperspirant active ingredients are specific aluminum salts, which polymerize and thereby block the entrance of the sweat gland. Here, it should be noted that such a blocking of the sweat glands is only temporarily. The aluminum salts, which are most commonly used as antiperspirant active ingredients, are water soluble such that normal sweat production usually removes the polymerized aluminum salts within 72 hours from the sweat glands. In addition, the aluminum salts may be removed by washing the axillary region with water.
Commercial antiperspirant products are mostly in form of an aerosol, a pump spray, a roll-on preparation, a cream or a stick. The popularity of these products varies depending on the region. For example, in Europe most markets are dominated by aerosol and roll-on preparations, whereby in North America customers prefer to use antiperspirant sticks.
Roll-on compositions are applied from a reservoir container via a rotatably mounted ball by rolling the ball over the human skin.
Generally, there are three basic technologies for the formulation of an antiperspirant composition to be applied with a roll-on dispenser.
Firstly, there are the antiperspirant compositions which are based on either an oil-in-water emulsion (O/W emulsion) or a water-in-oil emulsion (W/O emulsion). In O/W emulsions surfactants or emulsifiers, such as polyethylene glycol (PEG-40) stearate are utilized to emulsify an oil phase in an aqueous phase. The antiperspirant active aluminum salt is dissolved in the outer aqueous phase allowing the formulation to be a highly effective antiperspirant product. W/O emulsions are generally weaker in antiperspirant efficacy as the antiperspirant active aluminum salt are encapsulated in the oil phase. Additionally, due to the outer oil phase, the W/O emulsion often provides a sticky feeling upon application. Both kinds of emulsions often suffer disadvantages such that they often strongly leave white residues behind after application, have a tendency to micro-foaming and have stability problems. Furthermore, these kind of compositions often lack a fresh feeling after
application.
An alternative second approach to provide antiperspirant compositions to be applied with a roll-on applicator are products using the phase inversion temperature technology (PIT). To provide such microemulsion gels a suitable mixture of surfactants, oils and water is heated from 60°C to 90°C to give a W/O emulsion above the PIT. During cooling, the mixture shows phase inversion to give a white or transparent O/W emulsion gel. Therefore, PIT based microemulsion gels are one suitable approach if it is desirable to provide clear and transparent antiperspirant compositions. However, such compositions may suffer from stability problems, are more difficult to manufacture due to their complexity and lack a fresh feeling after application.
A third group of are antiperspirant compositions which provide an excellent antiperspirant efficiency are based on water/ethanol solutions (hydro-alcoholic solution) thickened with a water-soluble polymer such as hydroxyethyl cellulose. The advantage of these formulations is that they provide due to the high alcohol content a fresh sensation in the axilla and the composition dries quickly after application. Furthermore, the high alcohol content allows low levels, e.g. less than 2% by weight of the composition, of water insoluble lipophilic
compounds such as perfumes or oils to be dissolved in the formulations. Therefore, in contrast to the emulsion based formulations these compositions may be described as single phase products, containing no stable emulsified oil-phase. Hence, hydro-alcoholic
antiperspirant products containing high amounts of alcohol may appear to be a clear solution. In this way, the formulations are regularly perceived by the customer as textile-friendly and no white residues are expected to appear after application to the skin. A disadvantage of the high alcohol content is that these products may cause burning or irritating effects, if it is applied directly after shaving the axillary region. In another aspect, customers with sensitive skin may also be negatively affected by the high ethanol content. However, due to the presence of the low levels of perfumes and/or oils, a simple reduction of the ethanol content may lead to turbid formulations. Therefore, it remains desirable to provide clear hydro-alcoholic antiperspirant compositions, which have a reduced irritation potential upon application to sensitive skin and which appear to be a clear solution.
EP 0792635 A2 discloses hydro-alcoholic antiperspirant compositions containing about 57.6% by weight of ethanol. However, the compositions do not contain a quaternary ammonium compound and an anionic surfactant.
EP1 183003 A2 discloses antiperspirant compositions wherein the aluminum-zirconium or zinc salt is coated with a water-soluble surfactant. But, none of the disclosed formulations contain ethanol. Thus, the document does not concern hydro-alcoholic antiperspirant compositions.
It was now surprisingly found by the applicant that the compositions according to the present invention do not suffer the issues discussed above. It was particularly surprising that the cosmetic compositions according to the present invention show a significantly improved clarity of the composition.
The present invention is a cosmetic composition containing, based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition,

Still another subject of the present invention is the use of the cosmetic composition according to the invention to provide a clear antiperspirant product. Quaternary ammonium compound is the name for organic ammonium compounds with quaternary nitrogen atoms.
For the purpose of the present disclosure the term“mixture” describes a group of substances which are included in the cosmetic composition of the present invention. The term does not limit the discloser in a way that the components contained in the mixture have to be added as premix. The components can be added individually to the composition.
All the weight percentages (% by weight) given below are based, unless otherwise stated, on the total weight of the cosmetic composition. If ratios of certain components are disclosed in the following description, these ratios refer, unless otherwise stated, to weight ratios of the components.
Unless otherwise stated, all tests and measurements were performed under“normal conditions”. The term "normal conditions" refers to 20°C, 1013 hPa and a relative humidity of 50%.
For the purposes of the present disclosure, the term "free from" means that the proportion of the respective substance is less than 0.05% by weight. This ensures that entrainments or impurities with these substances are not included as "free from" according to the invention.
The term“skin” refers solely to human skin.
In terms of the present invention the level of clarity/clearness of a composition is rated by looking with the human eye through the composition and rating to which extend a distinct structure can unblemishedly been identified. The structure may be the letter A, printed in black with the font Arial, size 10. In order to evaluate the clarity/clearness of the composition, the composition is placed in a clear glass cuvette having a thickness of 2 cm. The printout is placed behind cuvette, such that the letter is viewed with the bare eye through 2 cm of the composition.

For optimum dispensing properties the cosmetic compositions have preferably a viscosity, which is neither too low nor too high. Therefore, it was found that preferred cosmetic compositions of the present invention are therein characterized that they have a viscosity in the range from 200 to 800 mPa-s, preferably 300 to 500 mPa-s at 35°C. The viscosity of the cosmetic composition of the invention is determined at 35° C in a 150 ml beaker using a Rheomat R 123 by the company proRheo. The Rheomat R 123 is a rotational viscometer, i.e. a measuring body rotates in the substance to be measured. It measures the force required to rotate the measuring body in the sample at a predetermined speed. For this torque, the rotational speed of the measuring body and the geometric dimensions of the measurement system used, the viscosity is calculated. As a measuring body the
measurement bob 3 (Part no. 200 0193) at a rotational speed range of 62.5 min -1 is used. Examples:
The following examples should illustrate the compositions of this invention, without intending to limit the invention to these examples. The numerical values in the examples are percentages by weight, based on the total weight of the preparations.
In order to provide an indication of the beneficial aspects of the present invention a set of comparative studies have been carried out. All investigated example compositions are presented in the following table.
