Definitions
- This invention relates to the general field of headwear, and more specifically to an accessory for a hard hat.
- Safety headwear such as a hard hat
- a hard hat is a type of helmet predominantly used in workplace environments, such as industrial or construction sites, to protect the head from injury due to falling objects, impact with other objects, debris, etc.
- Most hard hats also include a suspension system comprising some manner of suspension bands inside the helmet to spread the helmet's weight and the force of any impact evenly over the top of the wearer's head.
- Most suspension systems also provide a space between the helmet's outer shell and the wearer's head, so that if an object strikes the shell, the impact is less likely to be transmitted directly to the skull.
- Some helmet shells also have a mid-line reinforcement ridge to improve impact resistance.
- Hard hats are often required headgear in various circumstances, such as mining and industrial sites, requiring a person to wear them for continuous and often extended periods of time. As a result, comfort is an important consideration in hard hat design, along with the requisite safety aspects.
- the present invention was conceived with these shortcomings in mind and seeks to propose possible solutions, at least in part, in amelioration of the known shortcomings in the art of hard hat comfort and useability.
- a hard hat accessory comprising:
- a brim mounting configured for demountable attachment to a hard hat, said brim mounting defining attachment means configured for complementarily receiving a suspension system of the hard hat to secure the mounting to the hard hat;
- a head covering operatively and removably suspended from the brim mounting and surrounding a face and neck of a wearer of the hard hat, the covering comprising:
- a transparent mesh proximate the wearer's face and including an opaque band proximate the brim mounting to provide shading to a wearer's eyes, apertures of the mesh dimensioned to allow the wearer to see therethrough whilst preventing ingress of insects;
- the brim mounting comprises a resiliently deformable brim shaped and configured to operatively engage with a brim of the hard hat.
- the attachment means comprises a front pocket defined by the mounting, said front pocket shaped and dimensioned to complementarily receive a front portion of the hard hat therein in order to secure the accessory to the hard hat.
- the attachment means comprises a rear pocket defined by the mounting, said rear pocket shaped and dimensioned to complementarily receive a rear portion of the hard hat therein in order to secure the accessory to the hard hat.
- the front pocket defines suitable apertures therein to accommodate the suspension system of the hard hat.
- the rear pocket defines suitable apertures therein to accommodate the suspension system of the hard hat.
- the apertures of the front and/or rear pockets are configured such that operative accommodation of a suspension system of the hard hat secures the accessory to the hard hat .
- the mesh is foraminous with a spacing between strands or fibres comprising such mesh configured to allow a wearer to see therethrough whilst preventing entry of insects.
- the spacing between strands is in the range of 0.1mm to 5mm.
- the spacing between strands is in the range of 0.5mm to 2,5mm. [0018] In one example, the spacing between strands is in the range of 1mm to 2mm.
- the brim mounting is manufactured from a polymer and/or fabric material being resiliently deformable.
- the mesh is manufactured from a polymer material .
- the shade is manufactured from a cloth or fabric material.
- the head covering comprises a connector configured to releasably connect the transparent mesh and the shade .
- the connector comprises a clasp locker, zipper, hook and loop arrangement, buttons, press fittings, etc.
- the shade comprises a number of separate panels releasably attached to each other and/or the covering.
- the panels may be releasably attached via a clasp locker, zipper, hook and loop arrangement, press fittings, etc.
- the mesh defines a slit or similar access therein to allow a wearer access to the wearer's mouth and/or face.
- the slit may be sealable via a clasp locker, zipper, hook and loop arrangement, press fittings, buttons, etc.
- the mesh comprises a drawstring to suitably seat and/or fasten a bottom edge thereof around a wearer's head and/or body.
- Figure 1 is a side perspective-view diagrammatical representation of a hard hat accessory, in accordance with an aspect of the invention, when mounted to a hard hat worn by a wearer;
- Figure 2 is a bottom-view diagrammatical representation of the hard hat accessory of Figure 1 ;
- Figure 3 is a further side perspective-view diagrammatical representation of the hard hat accessory.
- Figure 4 is a side perspective-view diagrammatical representation of a further example of a hard hat accessory.
- the accessory 10 generally comprises a brim mounting 12 which is configured for demountable attachment to a hard hat 8, as shown.
- the accessory 10 also generally includes a head covering 14 for operatively surrounding a face 16 and neck 18 of a wearer 9 of the hard hat 8, as shown in Figure 1.
- the covering 14 comprises a transparent mesh 20 which is operatively proximate the wearer's face 16. Apertures of the mesh 20 are generally dimensioned to allow the wearer 9 to see through the mesh 20 relatively unobstructed, while at the same time preventing the entry of insects behind the head covering 14.
- the mesh 20 also included an opaque band 22 proximate the hard hat 8, as shown, to provide additional shading.
- other examples of the accessory 10 may exclude the opaque band 8.
- the covering 14 also comprises a shade 24 which is proximate the wearer's neck 18 and is configured to provide shading.
- the covering also typically includes some manner of attachment means 26 which is configured for releasably securing the brim mounting 12 to the hard hat 8.
- operative attachment of the mounting 12 to a hard hat 8 provides both shade and insect protection to a wearer's head.
- the accessory 10 is demountable from the hard hat 8, so that it can be removed if not required, such as moving to an indoor area, or the like .
- the brim mounting 12 comprises a substantially rigid brim 28 which is shaped and configured to operatively engage with a brim or edge of the hard hat 8.
- the brim mounting 12 may comprise an extending brim of varying shapes and/or sizes, depending on wearer requirements. However, other variations are possible and within the scope of the current invention, e.g. a central band operatively laying over the hard hat, a clip, a receiving channel and/or the like.
- the attachment means 26 comprises a front pocket 29 and a rear pocket 30 in the brim mounting 12 and/or head covering 14 which are shaped and dimensioned to receive an edge or brim of the hard hat 8 therein in order to secure the accessory 10 to the hard hat 8.
- the rear pocket 30 defines suitable apertures 32 therein to accommodate a suspension system (not shown) of the hard hat 8.
- other embodiments of the invention may have the front pocket 29 defining apertures, depending on suspension system requirements, or the like.
