Definitions
- the present invention relates to a fish farm enclosure, and more specifically it relates to an enclosure with a screen for protection against, for example, current and/or unwanted parasites.
- the applicant has been involved in the development of such improved technology for the aquaculture industry, and the object of the present invention is to provide solutions that provide advantages over the prior art in the aforementioned areas or others.
- a fish farm enclosure comprising: a net consisting of a wall of netting, the net being arranged to form a container for aquatic organisms, the net having an upper part arranged for positioning in a waterline and for attachment to a floating element and a lower part arranged for positioning under water, and a screen attached to the net at the lower part and arranged along at least parts of the wall.
- Figure 1 shows parts of a fish farm equipped with an enclosure according to an embodiment
- FIG. 2 shows parts of an enclosure according to an embodiment. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
- an enclosure 1 for use in a fish farm, comprising a net 2 consisting of a wall 100 of netting.
- the enclosure 1 may be part of a net pen as known from conventional fish farms.
- the net 2 is suspended from a floating ring or collar 3 and forms an encircling (i.e., escape-proof) enclosure for aquatic organisms, such as salmon.
- the floating collar 3 is typically moored in a frame mooring in the fish farm, which usually consists of a plurality of such enclosures 1 , for example, 6-12 enclosures.
- the net 2 is fastened to the floating collar 3 in a waterline area A (see Figure 2), in such a way that the floating collar 3 carries the weight of the net 2.
- the floating collar 3 further typically comprises a railing 7 (so-called handrail), walkway (not shown), mooring attachments (not shown) and the like.
- the net 2 also typically has an extension 8, a so-called jump fence, which extends past the waterline area and up to the handrail 7. What has been described above will be known to those of skill in the art as a conventional configuration of an aquaculture pen for grow-out facilities.
- a screen 101 is attached to the net 2 and arranged along at least parts of the wall 100.
- the screen 101 may, for example, be a tarpaulin, that can be wholly or partly watertight, and/or the screen 101 may be a plankton gauze or a sea lice skirt, i.e., a fine-meshed gauze or skirt that is provided to prevent build-up of, for example, sea lice.
- the net 2 may have horizontally or vertically running ropes 6.
- the ropes 6 constitute the load-bearing structure of the net 2, and especially the load of weights that are suspended beneath the net 2 to keep it extended and prevent collapse.
- the number of ropes 6 and the arrangement thereof vary depending on the configuration of the net 2, but typically include a top circumferential rope arranged in the waterline area and downward ropes (so- called downlines) running directly down to the tip of the net (in a so-called coned net) or down to a bottom circumferential rope 6 (and possibly further on to the tip) in a conventional net (circular net).
- the screen 101 is attached to the ropes 6 in the net 2.
- the screen 101 is attached to the top circumferential rope (not shown) and to the bottom circumferential rope 6 via ring 5 (described in more detail below).
- the screen 101 can also (or alternatively) be fastened to downward ropes 6 in the net 2.
- the screen 101 can also be fastened to the wall 100 if the netting is of a sufficiently strong construction to withstand this. This can be made possible by selecting sufficiently strong netting for this purpose.
- the screen 101 at its upper end is attached in the waterline area and, together with the net 2, is fastened to the floating collar 3 at the top of the net 2, and at its lower end is attached to a bottom part of the net 2.
- the screen 101 thus extends from the waterline area a predetermined distance downwards under water. The distance may, for example, be between 5 and 10 metres.
- the screen 101 may be arranged to encircle the whole net 2, or partly encircle it. It should be understood that the attachments can be distributed longitudinally along the screen 101 , and that there may be a high number of attachments. For example, the screen 101 can be fastened at each downline around a circumference of a net 2. In this embodiment, the screen 101 also has a height adjusting mechanism whereby the height of the lower end 101 a of the screen 101 can be adjusted. This allows adjustment of the surface area of the screen 101 , and thus the extent to which the screen 101 protects against current, unwanted organisms, etc.
- the height adjusting mechanism can comprise a cable 4 extending from the lower end 101 a of the screen 101 , via a ring 5 arranged in the circumferential bottom rope 6, to the waterline area A.
- the cable 4 runs in a loop from the waterline area A, via the lower end 101 a where the cable 4 is attached, through the ring 5 and up to the waterline area A again.
- the cable is releasably fastened to the floating collar 3 and can thus be operated by an operator.
- the height of the screen 101 can thus be adjusted by paying out or pulling in a length of the cable 4, whilst the upper end of the screen 101 is raised or a part of the screen 101 , for example, is lined up in the waterline area A. Alternatively, the upper end of the screen 101 is not raised, only the lower end 101 a of the screen 101 , in order to adjust the height.
- the height adjusting mechanism can comprise elastic bands that fasten the lower part of the screen 101 to the net 2 under water.
- the upper part of the screen 101 can be raised or lowered in order to adjust the area of the screen 101 under water, but where the lower part 101 a of the screen 101 is still attached to the net 2.
- the screen 101 can, for example, be equipped with rings or hooks at a given spacing in its vertical extent, which can be hung onto corresponding hooks on the floating collar 3 when the screen 101 is lined up.
- the rope 4 can also run through rings distributed in the vertical extent of the screen 101 , such that when the lower end 101 a is raised, the screen 101 will be folded up (similar to a curtain principle), thereby preventing a large fold of the screen 101 from hanging down into the sea.
- the screen 101 can be positioned on an inside of the wall 100, i.e., in the net 2, on the outside of the wall 100, or between two layers of netting which together form the wall 100. This position can be selected on the basis of, for example, local conditions, such as current intensity and direction at the location.
- a fish farm enclosure which has advantages over known solutions.
- a secure attachment thereof is obtained in that it is attached to the bearing structure of the net 2.
- the net 2 will thus also help the screen 101 to maintain its intended shape and position, making separate weighting of the screen 101 unnecessary. This further reduces the requirements for, and loading on the floating collar 3.
- the possibility of adjusting the height of the screen 101 means the effect can be varied, for example, if the screen 101 is a sea lice skirt it can be raised in periods with little risk of sea lice build-up, and/or if the oxygen level in the pen falls below a desired level.
- the height adjusting mechanism allows the tarpaulin, for example, to be lowered temporarily in order to form a partially closed water volume for treatment of fish, and then lifted again after the treatment for changing the water in the pen.
