Description

INPUT SYSTEM AND METHOD USING REMOTE CONTROLLER HAVING A NON-NUMERICAL KEYPAD
The present invention relates to a system and method for changing channels of a TV using a remote controller having a non-numerical keypad.
It is well-known that it is difficult to change channels in a practical and efficient manner in TV models supporting input by remote controllers having a non-numerical keypad due to the fact that the remote controller has a limited number of buttons. Because it is not possible to directly input numerical values via the remote controller, it will not be possible to change channels in platforms having a large number of channels and/or where channels are irregularly placed.
Remote controllers having a non-numerical keypad provided with Smart TVs along with a gyro sensor and presenting ease of pointer positioning usually contain button configurations comprising buttons for the most simple operations such as a stand-by button, 4 direction buttons and volume control buttons. Some models contain touch-sensor support for controlling the pointer.
In an exemplary application of the present art, in order to move from the 22nd channel to the 135th channel, the user enters the channel list using the OK button, presses the UP button 113 times or holds the button down for speed. While it is possible to move page by page in some models, this is usually slow and cumbersome. Considering that the number of channels can be in the thousands, this method is unusable. To prevent this problem, TVs are supplied with remote controllers having multi-functional and numeric keypads.
If the above mentioned function can be practically executed by using remote controllers having a non-numerical keypad, there will be no need for an additional remote controller. Some models allow the user to make a selection via pointer using the virtual keypad on the screen; however, this option has the problem of holding the sensitive pointer on the right digits. In summary, no method exists in the present art for easily and quickly changing channels using the buttons on a remote controller having a non-numerical keypad without having to position the pointer.
Among others, a prior art publication in the technical field of the invention may be referred to as US7868787, which discloses a character-input method providing a plurality of objects having a predetermined arrangement, mapping characters included in a character group represented by a representative character mapped to an object identified as a first signal among objects to which representative characters are mapped, to one or more objects among the plurality of objects when the first signal is received from a user input device, and inputting characters mapped to an object identified as the second signal among objects to which the characters are mapped. Other prior art publications may be referred to as US9319734, EP2407872, US2014165099, US6037942 and US8717299.
The present invention, on the other hand, addresses the situation where it is possible to use the buttons of a remote controller having a non-numerical keypad to change channels quickly and easily even for systems having thousands of channels. In this way it will be possible to change channels in platforms having a large number of channels and/or where channels are irregularly placed using a remote controller having a non-numerical keypad. Also, there will be no need to use an additional remote controller having a numerical keypad alongside the remote controller having a non-numerical keypad, which will reduce costs. Finally, usability problems arising from systems supporting channel selection by positioning the pointer to select a number on the virtual keypad will be eliminated. As a result, channel selection will be intuitive, practical and fast.
The present invention provides a system and method for changing channels of a TV using a remote controller having a non-numerical keypad, as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a system and method for practically changing channels of a TV using a remote controller having a non-numerical keypad.
The present invention proposes a method for controlling an image display device by a remote controller unit having a non-numerical keypad. The method comprises the steps of activating a channel selection function activating a virtual keypad on the screen of said image display device and selecting channels using direction buttons of the controller. Alternatively or additionally, direction buttons assume the role of a 3x3 matrix number pad on which a central start button is interchangeably used to switch between 5 and 0.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a remote control unit and control method, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the Claims, nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said Claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
The drawings are only exemplary in the sense that they do not necessarily reflect the actual dimensions and relative proportions of the respective components of the system if not otherwise explicitly stated.
Fig. 1 demonstrates top views of remote controllers having different non-numerical keypads according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 demonstrates a method of changing channels using a remote controller having a non-numerical keypad according to the present invention.
Fig. 3 demonstrates a method of selecting a channel using a remote controller having a non-numerical keypad according to the present invention.
Fig. 4 demonstrates a method of selecting a channel using a remote controller having a non-numerical keypad without waiting for timeout according to the present invention.
The following numerals are assigned to different part number used in the detailed description:
1) Remote control unit
2) Start button
3) Direction button
4) Non-numerical keypad
5) Virtual keypad
6) Channel selection indication
Figure 1 illustrates remote controller units (1) having a non-numerical keypad (4) with 4 or 8 direction buttons. The present invention proposes a system and method whereby selecting channels from 0 to 9999 is possible using a remote control unit (1) having a non-numerical keypad (4) via the direction buttons (3) and start button (2), i.e. a central confirmation button (OK button) on said remote control unit (1) and a virtual keypad (5) on the screen.
Typically, in order to activate the channel selection function the start button (2) is held pressed for a certain amount of time and the virtual keypad (5) and the space where the desired channel number will be entered will be activated on the screen. Figure 2 and 3 illustrate remote control units (1) having a non-numerical keypad (4) respectively with 4 direction buttons (3) and 8 direction buttons (3).
Initially, the number 5 on the virtual keyboard on the screen is active. Therefore, all digits can be reached pressing at most two buttons using a remote control unit (1) having four direction buttons (3) and only one button using a remote controller having eight direction buttons. The digit selection is approved by pressing the start button (2) and is displayed on the corner and number 5 is activated for the next selection. In this manner, the desired number can be selected practically and quickly. It is not necessary to fill all four digits in order to select a channel. When the desired number is entered, no other selection is made and at the end of the time out period the desired channel is selected. If all four digits have been entered, then the desired channel is selected without waiting for the time out period to end.
For instance to select channel number 128, the function is activated by pressing the OK button and holding. In order to select 1, the UP and LEFT buttons are pressed on the remote control unit (1) having four direction buttons (3) or the UP-LEFT button on a remote control unit (1) having eight direction buttons (3). In this manner, the number 1 is activated on the virtual keyboard (5) and selected by pressing the start button (2).
When the first digit is selected, again, the activated number on the screen is 5 corresponding to the central button on the virtual keypad (5). When the number 5 is activated, the UP button can be used to activate the number 2 on the virtual keyboard (5) and the start button (2) is pressed to select the same. The DOWN button is then used to activate the number 8 on the virtual keyboard (5) and the selection is made by pressing the start button (2).
It is possible to make no other selection to avoid waiting until the time out period is over to reach channel 128 by entering the full channel number as 0128 (Figure 4).
In an alternative or additional embodiment according to the present invention, the remote control unit (1) having eight direction buttons (3) is used as a channel selection tool without requiring a virtual keypad. In this embodiment, when the channel selection function is activated, every direction button (3) on the remote control unit (1) represent a number of a number pad while the upper three direction buttons (3) represent numbers from 1 to 3, the middle horizontal line represents numbers from 4 to 6 with the start button (2) representing 5 and the lower three direction buttons (3) represent numbers from 7 to 9. In this embodiment, 5 and 0 are interchangeably activated by the start button (2) by preferably double pressing to change from 5 to 0 and back to 5 again in response to another double press.
In a nutshell, the present invention proposes a method for controlling an image display device by a remote controller unit (1), said remote controller unit (1) having a non-numerical keypad (4) with direction buttons (3) disposed around a centrally placed start button (2), said method comprises the steps of activating a channel selection function in a first predetermined button and/or pressing form, activating a virtual keypad (5) on a screen portion of said image display device, navigating a channel selection indication (6) on said virtual keypad (5) by using said at least four direction buttons (3) and approving navigated digit selection by pressing said start button (2).
In one embodiment of the present invention, said method further comprises the steps of activating channel selection function in a second predetermined button and/or pressing form other than said first predetermined button and/or pressing form, pressing said direction buttons (3) on the remote control unit (1) as numbers representing elements of a 3x3 matrix number pad and double pressing said start button (2) to interchangeably switch between 5 and 0.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said non-numerical keypad (4) has at least four direction buttons (3).
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said channel selection function is activated by holding pressed or double pressing said start button (2) according to said first predetermined button and/or pressing form.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said channel selection function is activated by holding pressed or double pressing said start button (2) according to said second predetermined button and/or pressing form.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said non-numerical keypad (4) has eight direction buttons (3).
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said 3x3 matrix number pad formed by said direction buttons (3) on the remote control unit (1) comprises upper three direction buttons (3) representing numbers 1 to 3, middle horizontal line representing numbers 4 to 6 and lower three direction buttons (3) representing numbers 7 to 9.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, a remote control unit (1) performing the control method above is proposed. In a further embodiment of the present invention, an image display device controlled according to the method above is proposed.
Therefore, the invention ensures that no additional remote controller having a numerical keypad is needed when changing channels.
