Abstract

The present invention relates to a drum (1) suitable for use in washer/dryers (5), comprising a cylindrical body (2) produced from a rectangular shaped sheet metal, a linear seam (3) formed by superposing and folding on the body (2), of the straight edges which are brought to face each other by bending the sheet forming the body (2) into a cylinder shape, extending along the body (2) in parallel to the rotating axis (E) of the drum (1), and a plurality of beads (4) arranged on the seam (3) in full-length, formed by intermittently crushing the seam (3) by means of a clinching apparatus.

Description

A DRUM AND ITS PRODUCTION METHOD
The present invention relates to a drum suitable for use in washer-dryers, and its production method.
In washer-dryers, the laundry is loaded into a drum, the drum is rotated by an electric motor, and washing, spinning and drying processes performed. In the state of the art, in order to produce the drum, a rectangular shaped sheet metal called “peripheral sheet” is bent into a cylinder shape, its edges facing each other are joined, and the cylindrical body of the drum is thus formed. The front and the back sides of the cylindrical body are covered by an annular front cover provided with a laundry loading opening thereon, and a back cover. In production of the drum body, the straight edges of the sheet brought to face each other are form-fit joined by a longitudinal seam formed by the edges being superposed and folded. Then, the seam is intermittently crushed in full-length by a pressing apparatus in an operation called clinching, and the beads formed on the seam strengthen the form-fit join. The mechanical strength obtained thanks to the longitudinal seam and the beads formed by the clinching operation, determines the washing capacity of the washing machine to be produced using said drum as kilogram of laundry and the possible amount of spinning revolutions for said load. The laundry smearing to the drum wall and applying excessive pressure by the action of centrifugal force especially during spinning process of the washing machine, force the form-fit connection provided by said mechanical coupling method, towards opening/disengagement. In case said force overcomes the strength obtained by the form-fit join, the peripheral sheet of the drum opens and tears along the longitudinal seam region, causing great damage.
Patent application no. GB1150543 (A) discloses a drum similar to the embodiment of the invention. In said patent application, the seam form joining the cylindrical drum body, is completely inclined. In the embodiment of the invention however, the seam is not inclined but the beads formed on the seam are inclined.
The aim of the present invention is to realize a drum suitable for use in washers/dryers, whose joining region strength of the body sheet is enhanced, and its production method.
In the production of the drum realized to achieve the aim of the present invention, a body is formed by bending a rectangle shaped sheet metal into a cylinder shape. A seam is formed by bending and folding the straight edges of the cylindrical shaped body sheet metal facing each other. The beads are formed by intermittently crushing the seam in full-length by means of a clinching apparatus. The beads are inclined with respect to the seam plane or to the tangent at the joining point of the cylindrical body surface with the seam, enhancing the strength of the seam.
The drum realized to achieve the aims of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a schematic view of the drum provided in a washer-dryer.
Figure 2 is a schematic view of the seam and bead detail of the drum of the invention.
Figure 3 is a schematic view of forming a bead on the seam by means of a clinching apparatus.

The drum (1) suitable for use in washer/dryers (5), comprises a cylindrical body (2) produced from a rectangular shaped sheet metal (also called “peripheral sheet” in practice), a linear seam (3) (also called “longitudinal seam” in practice) formed by superposing and folding on the body (2), of the straight edges which are brought to face each other by bending the sheet forming the body (2) into a cylinder shape, extending along the body (2) in parallel to the rotating axis (E) of the drum (1), and a plurality of beads (4) arranged on the seam (3) in full-length, each transversely covering the seam (3), formed by intermittently crushing the seam (3) by means of a clinching apparatus, and enhancing the strength of the seam (3) and therefore the drum (1). The bead (4) is also called “clinch form” in practice.
The drum (1) of the invention comprises beads (4) formed so as to extend individually one by one inclined to the extent of a predetermined angle (A) towards the inner region of the body (2), with respect to the tangent (T) of the cylindrical body (2) surface coinciding with the bead (4) region, or with respect to the seam (3) plane parallel to the said tangent (T) (Figure 2).
In the production of the drum (1), a body (2) is formed by bending a rectangle shaped sheet metal (metal plate) into a cylinder shape. The seam (3) is formed by folding the straight edges of the cylindrical shaped body (2) sheet facing each other being bent into a hook shape. The beads (4) are formed by intermittently crushing the seam (3) in full-length by means of a clinching apparatus. The fact that the beads (4) are inclined by a certain angle (4), enhances the strength against forces attempting to open the seam (3). Then, the front and the back sides of the cylindrical body (2) are covered by an annular front cover provided with a laundry loading opening thereon, and a back cover (not shown in the figures). The inclination angle (A) of the beads (4) formed by means of the clinching apparatus, is between 5º and 15º, preferably is 10º, with respect to the upper surface plane of the seam (3), or with respect to the tangent (T) of the cylindrical body (2) surface at the joining point with the seam (3).
The drum (1) production method comprises the steps of:
- forming the body (2) by bending a rectangle shaped sheet metal into a cylinder shape,
- forming the seam (3) by folding on the body (2) the straight edges of the sheet metal facing each other after being nestled by being bent into a V-shape,
- adjusting the seam (3) by means of a seam adjustment apparatus,
- forming the beads (4) by means of a clinching apparatus so that each one extends to the inner region of the body (2) inclined with respect to the seam (3) plane (Figure 3), and
- joining the body (2) and the covers.
In the production of the drum (1) of the invention, the strength of the drum (1) is enhanced against forces applied thereon in washing and spinning processes, by forming inclined beads (4) on the seam (3). It is not necessary to perform a further welding process on the seam (3) region.

Claims (4)

  1. A drum (1) suitable for use in washer/dryers (5), comprising a cylindrical body (2) produced from a rectangular shaped sheet metal, a linear seam (3) formed by superposing and folding on the body (2), of the straight edges which are brought to face each other by bending the sheet forming the body (2) into a cylinder shape, extending along the body (2) in parallel to the rotating axis (E) of the drum (1), and a plurality of beads (4) arranged on the seam (3) in full-length, each transversely covering the seam (3), formed by intermittently crushing the seam (3) by means of a clinching apparatus,
    characterized by the beads (4) formed so as to extend individually one by one inclined to the extent of a predetermined angle (A) towards the inner region of the body (2), with respect to the tangent (T) of the cylindrical body (2) surface coinciding with the bead (4) region, or with respect to the seam (3) plane parallel to the said tangent (T).
  2. A drum (1) according to claim 1, characterized by the beads (4) with an inclination angle (A) between 5º and 15º with respect to the upper surface plane of the seam (3), or with respect to the tangent (T) of the cylindrical body (2) surface at the joining point with the seam (3).
  3. A washer-dryer (5) characterized by a drum (1) according to claim 1 or 2.
  4. A production method for a drum (1) according to claim 1 or 2, comprising the steps of:
    - forming the body (2) by bending a rectangle shaped sheet metal into a cylinder shape,
    - forming the seam (3) by folding on the body (2), the straight edges of the sheet metal facing each other after being nestled by being bent into a V-shape,
    - adjusting the seam (3) by means of a seam adjustment apparatus,
    - forming the beads (4) by means of a clinching apparatus, so that each one extends to the inner region of the body (2) inclined with respect to the seam (3) plane, and
    - joining the body (2) and the covers.
