Description

METHOD OF CONTROL AND MANAGEMENT FOR DEVICES ON THE INTERNET OF THINGS, IN PARTICULAR FOR HOME AUTOMATION, ROBOTIC, BIOMEDICAL, MONITORING, TELEMETRY APPLICATIONS AND THE LIKE.
The present invention relates to a method of control and management for devices on the internet of things ("IoT devices"), in particular for applications in home automation, robotic, biomedical, monitoring, telemetry and the like.
The acronym IoT, for Internet of Things, is a possible evolution of how the internet is used: objects ("things") are recognizable and acquire intelligence by virtue of the fact that they can communicate data about themselves and access information collected by others.
Recently there has been a rapid rise in the acceptance of IoT devices, which are increasingly found in buildings and dwellings: such devices include, among other things, systems for lighting, for managing energy, managing security, and controlling access.
Currently, home automation, robotic, monitoring devices (IoT devices in general) that can be sourced on the market offer proprietary interfaces (i.e. designed and developed by the makers of the device) for their management and control.
The learning curve plus a sufficient familiarity in the use of interfaces dedicated to a specific IoT device (or family of devices) require a certain time, and making full use of the functionalities offered requires the user to install and configure various different management systems. The "Web Giants" (e.g. Apple, Google, Amazon) are responding to the need to standardize these interfaces with proprietary solutions (such as Apple's "Home" application for the residential market) which use a combination of artificial intelligence and voice recognition algorithms (e.g. Siri, Alexa). Such solutions have the drawback of being associated with specific platforms and of using voice control in order to improve the user experience, although such type of control is not always possible or welcomed for obvious reasons of privacy.
In this context, the acceptance and consequent adoption of new electronic (and computer) solutions and interfaces by the market is a key point that has not yet been completely resolved, owing to the natural wariness of and reluctance to use new technologies that, often, are not easily comprehensible and accessible to all.
The aim of the present invention is to solve the above mentioned drawbacks, by providing a method of control and management for devices on the internet of things ("IoT devices"), in particular for home automation, robotic, biomedical, monitoring, telemetry applications and the like, which does not require the user to study and learn a new and specific interface for control and management.
Within this aim, an object of the invention is to provide a method of control and management for devices on the internet of things ("IoT devices"), in particular for home automation, robotic, biomedical, monitoring, telemetry applications and the like, which is simple to use and control by way of tools of common use such as smartphones, tablet computers, personal computers, smartwatches, smart glasses and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a method of control and management for devices on the internet of things ("IoT devices"), in particular for home automation, robotic, biomedical, monitoring, telemetry applications and the like, which allows the rapid and intuitive sharing of privileges and/or authorizations, even if conditional and time-determined.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a method of control and management for devices on the internet of things ("IoT devices"), in particular for home automation, robotic, biomedical, monitoring, telemetry applications and the like, which is low cost, easily and practically implemented, and safe in use.
This aim and these and other objects which will become better apparent hereinafter are achieved by a method of control and management for devices on the internet of things ("IoT devices"), in particular for home automation, robotic, biomedical, monitoring, telemetry applications and the like, characterized in that said IoT device comprises:
- at least one memory unit for the registration of access and use credentials for at least one predefined messaging system;
- at least one computer for the association of a respective command/action with each one of the messages received via said system; and in that it consists of:
- identifying said IoT device as a normal contact/user of a messaging system in use by at least one user;
- sending messages, of substantially standard type, by way of a communication apparatus, of the type preferably chosen from among a computer, a tablet computer, a telephone, a smartphone, a smartwatch and the like, to said IoT device for the control thereof, by the at least one user;
- receiving messages, of substantially standard type, from said IoT device on the at least one user's communication apparatus for the communication, to the at least one user, of information about the status of said IoT device.
Such aim and such objects are also achieved by an IoT device, characterized in that it comprises:
- at least one memory unit for the registration of access and use credentials for at least one predefined messaging system;
- at least one computer for the association of a respective command/action with each one of the messages received via said system;
- at least one seat for transceiver means of at least one message of the type of a hardware key comprising at least one part of said access and use credentials for said messaging system, said hardware key being preferably chosen from among a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card, a smart card, a USB key, a memory card and the like. Further characteristics and advantages of the invention will become better apparent from the detailed description that follows of a preferred, but not exclusive, embodiment, of the method of control and management for IoT devices, in particular for home automation, robotic, biomedical, monitoring, telemetry applications and the like, according to the invention, which is schematically represented and for the purposes of example in the accompanying Figure 1.
The rapid evolution of technologies and of connectivity, combined with an ever-increasing miniaturization of devices, have in the last decade led to the establishment of platforms, such as social networks and instant messaging services, that ensure an incredible ease of use as well as extreme rapidity and omnipresence in accordance with the ATAWAD principle: anytime, anywhere, any device.
These platforms are tools for the rapid and secure exchange of information and are in use between users of all ages, by virtue of intuitive interfaces that have now been absorbed by all because of frequent and daily experience.
The method of control and management according to the invention, indicated for IoT devices, in particular for applications in home automation, robotic, biomedical, monitoring, telemetry and the like, can be implemented on any IoT device that comprises at least one memory unit 2 for the registration of access and use credentials for at least one predefined messaging system.
The IoT device must further comprise at least one computer 3 for the association of a respective command/action with each one of the messages received via the messaging system indicated previously.
The method of control and management according to the invention consists of identifying the IoT device as a normal contact/user of a messaging system in use by a user (or a group of users).
Subsequently, the method entails the possibility to send messages of substantially standard type, by the user and/or the group of users, by way of a communication apparatus 5, of the type preferably chosen from among a computer, a tablet computer, a telephone, a smartphone, a smartwatch and the like, to the IoT device for the control thereof.
Similarly, the user and/or the group of users can receive messages, of substantially standard type, from the IoT device on the user's and/or the group of users' communication apparatus 5, for the communication of information about the status of such IoT device.
In practice the user will see also the IoT device on his/her telephone, smartphone, tablet computer and the like, in the address book, and the device can be reached with a message in the exact same way as is normally achieved with any other contact present in the same address book.
Messaging systems, in some cases, make it possible to send images, files of various kinds and documents: the possibility is not ruled out that the IoT device can also receive files of different kinds with respect to the simple text of the message. According to the type of file received, the IoT device could even configure a consequent behavior: for example, if an update to the firmware is sent to the IoT device, it could proceed automatically with its installation.
It should be noted that the IoT device also comprises a seat for transceiver means 4 of at least one message: such transceiver means 4 are of the type of a hardware key that comprises at least one part of the access and use credentials relative to the messaging system.
The hardware key can preferably be chosen from among a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card, a smart card, a USB key, a memory card, a signal transceiver and the like.
The signal transceiver can be a Bluetooth transceiver, a wireless LAN transceiver, or a transceiver based on other wireless connectivity standards, in particularly efficient embodiments.
The signal transceiver could also operate via cable: in this case, it should be connected to a mains electricity supply, or to a telephone network, or to a data network (such as for example a LAN).
The computer 3 can positively comprise a microprocessor which is functionally associated with at least one memory component of type preferably chosen from among programmable, volatile, preprogrammed by the maker and the like.
In this manner the computer 3 can comprise a protocol for interpreting the messages received (and for translating the information about the IoT device to transmit into a language understood by the users) inside the memory component so as to enable a correct dialog between the IoT device and the user (or the group of users) who have registered the corresponding contact in their address book.
It is important to note that the step of identifying the IoT device as a contact/user of a messaging system in use consists of associating an identifying name and a profile inside the messaging system with the credentials of the IoT device (in exactly the same way that one enters the details of any contact with whom one intends to exchange messages and/or communications). In this manner the IoT device will be visible to users who have entered it in their address books as a normal user of the messaging service.
The computer 3 of the IoT device, in order to allow the bidirectional communication of such IoT device with the other users, can positively comprise a protocol for interpreting/processing messages.
Such protocol will enable the identification, inside the data string that constitutes the message proper, of commands and information relating to the IoT device.
It should be noted that in a particular application version, the IoT device can effectively be constituted by a lock of the electric or electronic type and the like.
In such case the messages between the user (or the users belonging to a predefined group) and the lock can conveniently comprise:
- codes for actuating, enabling, disabling at least one component chosen from among a handle, a spring latch and a latch of the lock and/or which are associated with the lock,
- codes corresponding to the current status of the lock (indication that lock is open, closed etc.),
- codes corresponding to the history of statuses assumed by the lock in a predefined time interval.
It should be noted that the messaging system used in the method according to the invention can be preferably chosen from among WhatsApp, ChatOn, SnapChat, the various brands of Messenger (Facebook, BlackBerry, Microsoft etc.), Signal, iMessage, FaceTime, Telegram, Tox, Skype, PidGin, Trillian, Digsby, Viber, forfone, GroupMe, Google Hangouts, Hike, imo, Indoona, InstaMessage, Kakao Talk, Line, LiveProfile, Nimbuzz, Tango, Voxer, XMS, Yuilop, WeChat and the like.
However, the use is not ruled out of messaging systems that are different and/or innovative with respect to those in the above list.
In detail, the IoT device by way of which it is possible to implement the method according to the invention must positively comprise:
- at least one memory unit 2 for the registration of access and use credentials for at least one predefined messaging system;
- at least one computer 3 for the association of a respective command/action with each one of the messages received via the system;
- at least one seat for transceiver means 4 of at least one message of the type of a hardware key comprising at least one part of the access and use credentials for such messaging system, such hardware key being preferably chosen from among a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card, a smart card, a USB key, a memory card, a signal transceiver and the like.
As previously explained above, the IoT device can preferably be a lock of the electric or electronic type and the like. With the messages, one could therefore ask the lock for changes of status (from open to closed and/or from closed to open). One can further temporarily enable another user of the messaging system to command the lock: for example the user with predefined identification credentials will be authorized to open the lock in a certain time interval. One can also interrogate the lock on its status in order to verify the correct closure and/or in order to find out if accesses by persons have been made in a certain period.
In addition the lock could send an alarm message upon any attempt at tampering and/or forcing.
What is fundamental is that the user (or the group of users) will not have to learn to use a new system for controlling the lock (or the generic IoT device), but will continue to use a messaging system that he/she already knows and for which no learning phase is necessary.
The method according to the invention can be applied on any messaging system (including on messaging systems other than those cited previously and/or that may be developed in the future) therefore enabling the user to adopt the messaging system with which he/she is most familiar and therefore enormously facilitating the user's management of the lock (or of the generic IoT device).
The method and the device according to the invention can easily entail the use of so-called "artificial intelligence".
This definition means the ability/capacity of a computer 3 to carry out functions and reasoning typical of the human mind.
In particular, the method and the device according to the invention will be capable of interpreting the messages received and identifying which operations to carry out in order to satisfy the requests of such messages.
In practice, artificial intelligence makes it possible to humanize the system (understood as the set of IoT devices interfaced with each other and the at least one communication apparatus 5 available to the users) so that the "virtual contact" (corresponding to the IoT device placed under control) can autonomously react to a generic request, interpret it and carry out the necessary activities in order to achieve such request.
What is particularly advantageous about an interface that uses virtual intelligence is the fact that the user can send messages with natural language (as if the user was sending normal messages to another human user) and it will be up to the IoT device to interpret them and react as a function of what was received according to the logic typical of neural nets.
Purely by way of example, a possible use case is where the IoT device is an electric lock and the user sends it the message "Allow my neighbor to enter".
In such case, if the door is closed and the alarm is armed, the IoT device (if the lock is closed) will have to perform two separate operations in order to carry out the order received in the message: firstly it will have to disarm the alarm and, subsequently, open the lock in order to allow the authorized neighbor to enter.
It should further be noted that the possibility henceforth exists of introducing a so-called "virtual assistant" into the system, constituted by the various interconnected IoT devices and the various communication apparatuses available to the enabled users.
The virtual assistant will enable the entire system to carry out complex orders received in a message from a user, thus ensuring the enabling/disabling and/or the selection of a particular operating mode of multiple IoT devices, in conformance with the requests received.
The virtual assistant of the type entailed according to the invention is, effectively, of the type known as a "chat bot": these are computer programs (software) that simulate a conversation between a robot and a human being.
Advantageously the present invention solves the above mentioned problems, by providing a method of control and management for IoT devices, in particular for home automation, robotic, biomedical, monitoring, telemetry applications and the like, which does not require the user to study and learn a new and specific interface for control and management.
It will in fact be the IoT device that will adapt to the user's preferred communication platform (i.e. the specific messaging system that the user intends to use).
Conveniently, the method according to the invention will be simple to implement (therefore simple to use and control) by way of tools that are in common use such as smartphones, tablet computers, personal computers, smartwatches, smart glasses and the like.
Positively, the method according to the invention allows the rapid and intuitive sharing of privileges and/or authorizations, even if conditional and time-determined.
Conveniently the method of control and management for IoT devices, in particular for home automation, robotic, biomedical, monitoring, telemetry applications and the like, is easily and practically implemented and low cost: such characteristics render the method and the IoT device according to the invention innovations that are safe in use.
The invention, thus conceived, is susceptible of numerous modifications and variations, all of which are within the scope of the appended claims. Moreover, all the details may be substituted by other, technically equivalent elements.
In the embodiments illustrated, individual characteristics shown in relation to specific examples may in reality be interchanged with other, different characteristics, existing in other embodiments.
In practice, the materials employed, as well as the dimensions, may be any according to requirements and to the state of the art.
Where the technical features mentioned in any claim are followed by reference numerals and/or signs, those reference numerals and/or signs have been included for the sole purpose of increasing the intelligibility of the claims and accordingly, such reference numerals and/or signs do not have any limiting effect on the interpretation of each element identified by way of example by such reference numerals and/or signs.
