Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for forming a 3D (3 dimensional) object by sequentially solidifying molten or liquid plastic polymers one layer of plastic polymer on top of another already solidified layer of plastic polymer
- 3D printing Such production methods are generally disclosed in the art as 3D printing, rapid prototyping or additive manufacturing processes. In this relation, unless otherwise specified the term 3D printing covers any such method as mentioned above.
- the specific or predetermined value is higher than 50% and preferably higher than 80% and most preferably 100%. It is especially advantageous if the first and the second material in some volumes of at least a part of the remaining volume are evenly distributed and mixed. In this relation, the percentage of the first material may advantageously decrease gradually or stepwise with the distance from the first part of the volume of the 3D object.
- the structure forms an electrical conduc- tor, where the first material has a higher electric conductivity than the second material.
- the structure may form a heat conductor, where the first material has higher heat conductivity than the second material.
- the structure may form an optical element, where the first material has a higher light transparency than the second material.
- the structure may alternatively or additionally form a mechanical mechanism, where the second material has a higher elasticity than the first material.
- the mechanical mechanism may advantageously comprise at least two separate elements/volumes having a relatively high percentage of the first material, and at least one hinge volume extending between the two separate elements and having a lower percentage of the first material than the two separate elements, but a higher percentage of the first material than the remaining part of the volume of the object.
- the separate elements/volumes may advantageously bed shaped as rods or plates.
- the 3D object may advantageously be printed in a 3D printer by printing a sequence of voxels, each voxel consisting of either the first or the second material.
- a 3D printer comprising at least two printer heads, each being adapted for ejecting droplets of molten plastic polymer, is especially advantageous for the production of the 3D object according to this invention. This is due to the fact that each droplet produces one voxel during the printing, but also that such printers are known in many various embodiments, sizes and qualities.
- Fig. 1 Is a sketch, showing, in a perspective view, an example of a 3D object according to the invention.
- Fig. 1 shows an example of a 3D object 1 according to the invention, and formed as a big solid C with an outer shape 2 forming two legs 3 and an in- termed iate portion 4.
- the 3D object is produced from a 3D printing process, using two different plastic polymers/materials, the first material having a significantly lower elasticity than the second material.
- a structure comprising structural elements 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, is printed during the printing process with the first material having a relatively low elasticity.
- the structural elements 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 extends through the 3D object all the way from the side where they are visible on this drawing and to the opposite side, and thereby each of these structural elements forms a plate.
- the structural elements 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are all surrounded by intermediate volumes 10, 1 1 , 12, 13 and 14 of material being a mix of the first and the second materials as mentioned above and the remaining volume 15 may according to the invention consist of only the second material or it may also comprise a mix of the first and the second material as mentioned above, but having a percentage of the first material being lower in the remaining volume 15 than in the intermediate volumes 10, 1 1 , 12, 13 and 14.
- the intermediate volumes 10, 1 1 , 12, 13 and 14 where they are overlapping or at least close to each other forms hinges between the structural elements 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, so that the structural elements 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 forms a mechanical mechanism causing the structural elements 8, 9 in the legs 3 of the big C to move as indicated with the arrows 16 when a force is applied to the big C as indicated by the arrow 17.
- first and the second material may also have other different material properties, such as light transparency, or heat or electrical conductivity, and in such cases the structural elements 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 may also provide other interesting effects when light, heat or electrical current is applied to the structure formed by the structural elements.
- the general principle according to the present invention may be used in the design and production of 3 dimensional products having an outer shape different from the one shown in the drawing, and that the percentages of the first and the second material, as well as the materials, may be selected in accordance with the aimed purpose and use of the 3 dimensional product.
