  • the first leg 1 and/or said second leg 2 may comprise a gripping surface such as bulges 13, 14, or a surface section made from rubber or a rubbery material for increased friction, on the outer face. This facilitates closing the clamp and makes it possible for some to do so using one hand.

  • the cavity is capable of receiving an object to be claimed without the object being clamped, as the legs are sprung apart before inserting the object to be clamped, meaning that the three legs are biased in a non-clamping position.

  • This has the advantage that the clamp can be arranged to clamp the object without dislocating and/or deforming the object prior to clamping while still providing a secure clamping once the clamp is correctly arranged on the object.
  • the user When an object is to be clamped in a device according to the present invention, it is arranged inside the cavity and the legs are pressed towards each other and the clamping beds hinder the object to move inside the gradually decreasing cavity.
  • the user has the advantage to ensure that the clamping force meets the requirements by applying the clamping force needed by hand to the second leg and the user is given a possibility to place the object to be clamped in the desired position prior to clamping .

  • the second embodiment is a clamp similar to the clamp described in the first embodiment and has a T-shaped rail 17 incorporating a flange 18 on the outer face of the first leg 1 and a rail 20 on the outer face of the second leg 2.
  • the second embodiment is preferably for use in a cutting and clamping device, but may also be used in a fashion similar to the clamp described in the first embodiment.
  • clamps may be moulded from a plastics material, such as, but not limited to, nylon.
  • a clamp of the invention as shown in figure 4 or 5 may be combined with a clamp holder 50 such as that shown in figure 7 and a second clamp 30 such as that shown in figures 8 and 9 to produce a cutting and clamping device as shown in figure 6.
  • the clamp of the present invention may however be used in any suitable device and its use is not limited to the hereinafter disclosed embodiment.
  • the first clamp 60 in the clamping and cutting device may be a clamp as described in the second embodiment.
  • the second clamp 30 in the clamping and cutting device is shown in figures 8 and 9 and comprises a first 31, a second 32 and a third leg 34, an elongated member 35 and a T-shaped rail 38 incorporating a flange 39 on the outer face of the first leg 31.
  • the first leg 31 of the second clamp 30 of the clamping and cutting device is attached to an end of the second leg 32 by a first resilient hinge 33 at one end of the first leg 31.
  • the first resilient hinge 33 allows for the second leg 32 to close against the first leg 31.
  • the elongated member 35 of the second clamp 30 extends in the direction of the first leg 31 and originates at the end of the first leg 31 that is opposite the first resilient hinge 33.

  • the third leg 34 of the second clamp 30 is attached to the first leg 31 between the first resilient hinge 33 and the elongated member 35 by a second resilient hinge 36.

  • the device is assembled by passing the end of the T-shaped rail 39 closest to the first resilient hinge 33 of the second clamp 30 into the forward end of the T-shaped slot 46 of the clamp holder 50.
  • a tooth 41 on the second clamp 30 constitutes an abutment surface, which is adapted to engage behind an abutment surface in the slot 46 of the clamp holder 50, thus preventing the second clamp 30 from disengaging from the cutting and clamping device.
  • the first clamp 60 is assembled into the clamp holder 50 by passing the end of the T-shaped rail 17 closest to the first resilient hinge 8 into the mouth of the slot 44 of the clamp holder 50. The device is then ready for use.

  • the device may be packaged in this form and may be supplied ready for use from the factory in which it is made.

  • the umbilical cord is passed into the triangular cavities of the clamps by depressing the third legs 3, 34.
  • the third legs 3, 34 are automatically returned to their original positions by the hinges 11, 36.
  • the third legs are returned to their original positions the umbilical cord becomes trapped within the triangular cavities formed by legs 1, 2, 3 and 31, 32, 34, which ensures that the cord remains within the clamps during operation of the device.
  • the first clamp 60 is disengaged from the clamping and cutting device as it has slid out of the clamp holder 50 by moving past the cutting means 42.
  • the first clamp 60 remains closed due to the locking members 9, 10 and stays on the baby's umbilical cord stump.
  • the second clamp 30 remains closed in the clamp holder 50 thus clamping off the umbilical cord on the mother's side.
  • the clamps 30, 60 and the clamp holder 50 may all be made from different coloured materials.
  • all of the components except the cutting blade may be moulded in plastics such as nylon.
