Description

BUCHU PREPARATION
FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a Buchu preparation.
More particularly, the present invention relates to a Buchu preparation for use as a preservative.
BACKGROUND TO INVENTION
Buchu is one of the best known medicinal plants of South Africa and is indigenous to the Cedarberg Mountains and surrounding areas. Despite its popularity little scientific evidence exists about the various medicinal uses of this small fynbos shrub from the family Rustaceae. The two primary species of Buchu used commercially are Agasthoma betulina (round-leaf Buchu) and Agathosma crenulata (oval-leaf Buchu). Besides its medicinal properties, Buchu oil is also used in the flavourant and fragrance industry, currently the largest commercial use thereof. Buchu extract (with its natural odour) is currently marketed as an active ingredient in formulations for the purpose of including the natural antiinflammatory, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties of Buchu in products.
Buchu oil is typically prepared in a (high vacuum) low steam distillation process in which the Buchu oil required for the commercial market is extracted from the plant material and separated from the by-products of this steam distillation process.
It is an object of the invention to suggest a novel Buchu preparation. SUMMARY OF INVENTION
According to the invention, a Buchu preparation which includes a Buchu oil extract and being adapted to be used as a natural preservative.
The natural preservative may be used in the cosmetics industry and/or food industry.
Also according to the invention, a preservative for the cosmetics and/or food industry includes a Buchu oil extract.
Yet further according to the invention, a gel preparation includes a Buchu preparation as a natural preservative.
The Buchu preparation may be about 0.25% concentration of the gel preparation.
The Buchu preparation may be the sole preservative in the gel preparation.
The Buchu preparation may act as active ingredient and natural preservative.
The Buchu preparation may include a synthetic preparation.
The Buchu preparation may be a certified organic product.
The low concentration of the Buchu preparation in gel and other preparations makes it extremely cost effective for use in formulations/preparations.
The Buchu preparation may be odourless.
The Buchu oil extract may be odourless and hence increase the potential applications of the extract and Buchu preparation. (Buchu extract typically has a very intense odour which may exclude it as an ingredient since it easily overpowers the fragrance of a product.)
The Buchu oil extract and/or Buchu preparation may have various concentrations.
The Buchu oil extract and/or Buchu preparation may be odourless.
The Buchu oil extract and/or Buchu preparation may be an organic or conventional extract.
The Buchu oil extract and/or Buchu preparation may be in combination with other natural extracts.
The Buchu oil extract and/or Buchu preparation may be effective against Aspergillus Niger.
Yet further according to the invention, there is provided a topical formulation including at least one Buchu oil extract as natural preservative and active ingredient.
Yet further according to the invention, there is provided a topical formulation including at least one active ingredient and natural preservative originating from at least one Buchu oil extract or bio-active fraction thereof in a pharmaceutically acceptable form.
The invention extends further to the use of at least one Buchu oil extract as an active ingredient and natural preservative in the manufacture of a medicament. The topical formulation may be a therapeutic formulation. The topical formulation may be a gel or cream. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF EXAMPLE
The invention will now be described by way of example.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided a Buchu preparation which includes a Buchu oil extract and being adapted to be used as a natural preservative.
The natural preservative can be used in the cosmetics industry and/or food industry.
The Buchu preparation can be about 0.25% concentration of the gel preparation.
The Buchu preparation can be the sole preservative in the gel preparation.
The Buchu preparation acts as active ingredient and natural preservative.
The Buchu preparation can include a synthetic preparation.
The Buchu preparation can be a certified organic product.
The low concentration of the Buchu preparation in gel and other preparations makes it extremely cost effective for use in formulations/preparations.
The Buchu preparation can be odourless. The Buchu oil extract can be odourless and hence increase the potential applications of the extract and Buchu preparation. (Buchu extract typically has a very intense odour which may exclude it as an ingredient since it easily overpowers the fragrance of a product.)
The Buchu oil extract and/or Buchu preparation can have various concentrations.
The Buchu oil extract and/or Buchu preparation can be odourless.
The Buchu oil extract and/or Buchu preparation can be an organic or conventional extract.
The Buchu oil extract and/or Buchu preparation can be in combination with other natural extracts.
The Buchu oil extract and/or Buchu preparation can be effective against Aspergillus Niger.
The topical formulation can be a therapeutic formulation. The topical formulation can be a gel or cream.
Test have been performed to test a formulation containing .25% Buchu Oil and no known preservative. The objective was to establish the preservative capability of the Buchu oil contained in the gel formulation and the results showed great preservative properties. This test was done on a formulation containing .25% Buchu Oil. The Buchu oil extract and/or Buchu preparation thus is capable of acting as natural preservative in formulations thus enabling the exclusion of parabens as preservative. The results show clearly that the requirements for antimicrobial effectiveness are met and therefore Buchu oil is a natural preservative at a concentration of .25% in our gel formulation.
This effectively means that Buchu oil can be used as a natural preservative in the cosmetic and foods industry.
As the odourless variety of the Buchu extract qualifies as a preservative, a huge spectrum of formulations can benefit from the extract since the inclusion of the extract in a formulation will no longer affect the fragrance of the product. Formulations which can benefit include cosmetic formulations, household cleaning formulations, formulations used in animals products etc.
All natural and organic formulations can benefit from including the extract as a preservative as the extract is 100% natural and offer a certified organic format option.
