BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
With reference to Figures 1 - 5 and 7, 1 indicates the thermal weed control device fed with solid fuel object of the present invention.
The invention provides that the solid fuel consists, for example, of wood pellets, agricultural pellets, wood chips, vegetable coal, and generally products and vegetable and agricultural by-products or coal or the like. The invention provides that the solid elements of the fuel have dimensions ranging from a determined minimum and a determined maximum.
The device 1 comprises a reactor means 3 having a tubular wall, a portion of its longitudinal internal cavity is assigned to contain the solid fuel to burn. Such tubular wall of the reactor means 3 is equipped with an outlet mouth means 5 which puts said internal cavity in communication with outside.
The end opposite to the outlet mouth means 5 of the tubular wall of the reactor means 3 is equipped with a closure means 7 assigned to close the end of the internal cavity opposed to the outlet mouth means 5. The closure means 7 can be connected to the respective end of the tubular wall of the reactor means 3 in a removable way, for example by means of a threaded portion of said closure means 7 which can be screwed to a female screw made in the internal surface of the corresponding end of the tubular wall of the reactor means 3. Alternatively the closure means 7 can be connected to the tubular wall of the reactor means 3 by means of a bayonet link or by means of external hooking or screw fasteners.
The tubular wall of the reactor means 3 consists of a side wall 19 which in cooperation with the closure means 7, delimits said internal cavity.
At least in a first operative condition of the device 1, which will be described below, the outlet mouth means 5 is turned downward, the longitudinal axis of the tubular wall of the reactor means 3 is vertically oriented or it forms with the vertical an angle lower than 90° and the closure means 7 is placed over the outlet mouth means 5.
The reactor means 3 is furthermore provided with a pierced grid means 9 which divides the internal cavity in a first chamber means 11 comprised between the closure means 7 and the grid means 9 and in a second chamber means 13 comprised between the grid means 9 and the outlet mouth means 5. In said first operative condition, the first chamber means 11 is upper than the second chamber means 13.
The dimensions of the holes of the grid means 9 are lower than said minimal dimension of the solid elements of the fuel to prevent it from falling through the grid means 9.
The side wall 19 of the reactor means 3 has thickness nearly constant and has an upper portion, comprised between the closure means 7 and the grid means 9, which has a cylindrical or nearly cylindrical shape. The lower portion of the side wall 19, which is comprised between the grid means 9 and the outlet mouth means 5 has the shape of a truncated cone with a smaller base in correspondence with the outlet mouth 5; therefore the first chamber means 11, laterally delimited by the upper portion of the side wall 19, has a cylindrical shape and the second chamber means 13, laterally delimited by the lower portion of the side wall 19, has the shape of a truncated cone which narrows towards the outlet mouth means 5 assuming a shape similar to the one of a converging nozzle to speed up the hot gases coming out from the outlet mouth means 5.
The whole side wall 19 can be made of steel or its upper portion can be made of steel and its lower portion can be made of a fictile material, of pottery, of a refractory material or it can be obtained from a geopolymeric material. Alternatively the invention provides that the side wall 19 can be totally made of a fictile, ceramic, refractory or geopolymeric material. The side wall 19, or its lower portion, can be carried out by casting, milling or forming or, for example in the event of using a geopolymeric material, by means of a three- dimensional printing. The invention finally provides that the whole side wall 19 and the grid means 9 can integral by means of a three-dimensional printing of the geopolymeric material. The closure means 7 can be made of steel or of a fictile material, of pottery, of a refractory material or geopolymeric material.
The total or partial constitution of the reactor means 3 with said fictile, ceramic, refractory or geopolymeric material provides various effects and advantages among which heat insulation, resistance to corrosion, lightness.
The device 1 is provided with first air blower means 15 (or with first air draw means) flowing to the portion of the first chamber means 11 adjacent or near to the closure means 7. The device 1 is also provided with second air blower means 17 (or with second air draw means) flowing to the second chamber means 13.
More specifically the first air blower means 15 has a respective terminal mouth which crosses the thickness of the cylindrical side wall or of the closure means 7 of the reactor means 3 and flows to the upper portion of the first chamber means 11 in proximity to the lower face of the closure means 7; the second air blower means 17 has a respective terminal mouth which crosses the thickness of the cylindrical side wall and which flows to the upper portion of the second chamber means 13, in proximity to the lower face of the grid means 9.
The device 1 comprises thermal insulation means, for example consisting of a substantial layer or carpet of mineral wall or the like, laid on the external surface of the reactor means 3 to improve the efficiency, to speed up the reaching of the normal operation and to avoid risks of burn to the bystanders.
Optionally the device 1 can be equipped with bypass means 25 of gases flow which are coming out from the outlet mouth means 5. Such optional bypass means 25 comprises a duct 27 fed with an dilution air flow and flowing near to or around the outlet mouth means 5.
Preferably the duct 27 has the shape of an annular chamber and it is adjacent to the convergent portion of the second chamber means 13 which ends with the outlet mouth means 5. The annular chamber of the duct 27 flows thought an annular opening or a set of openings disposed near such outlet mouth means 5. The bypass means 25 increase the capacity of the gas which are sufficiently hot to carry out an effective weeding action increasing the treatable surface in the unity of time and at the same time they 25 protects trees, plants and objects from the contact with a too hot gas which could damage them. Alternatively, the invention provides that the duct 27 comprises a set of openings flowing directly into the second chamber means 13 through the thickness of said side wall 19 and in proximity to the outlet mouth means 5.
In said first operative condition the first chamber means 11 contains at least some unburned solid fuel P, the air blower means first 15 and second 17 adduce respective air flow, respectively primary and secondary, having respectively and definite flows (or deliveries) appropriately controlled. The primary flow allows a partial combustion of a portion B of the solid fuel in the first chamber means 11 which at the beginning involves the portion of the fuel adjacent to the grid means, as shown in Figure 2, and which later moves towards the top, as shown in Figure 3, till it crosses all the longitudinal size of the fuel P in the internal cavity as shown in Figure 4. The discoidal volume of partial combustion of successive portions of fuel B moves then towards the top and leaves behind itself the burned fuel C said "char" or "charcoal" which at the end of the first operative condition partly fills up said internal cavity as shown in Figure 5. During all the first operative condition the secondary flow carries the combustion, in the second chamber means 13, of the gases which are produced by said partial combustion of a portion B of the solid fuel P.
Said flows primary and secondary adduced by the air blower means first 15 and second 17 are produced by one or more pumping means, for example of centrifugal fan or the like, and such flows keep the pressure inside the cavity of the reactor means 3 at an higher value than the external atmospheric environmental one. The gases flow which are coming out from the outlet mouth means 5 is flows along the longitudinal axis of the reactor means 3 and it is downward oriented.
At the end of the first operative condition of the device 1, whose status is shown in Figure 5, it is possible to interrupt the secondary air flow and control the primary air flow to activate the combustion of the char C starting the second operative condition of the device 1. As an alternative to the combustion of the char C it is possible to interrupt both the primary and the secondary flow and to recover the char by means of a specific door and/or basket, not shown, and/or removing the closure means 7 whose opening allows, after the removal of the char, to reload the internal cavity of the reactor means 3 with the solid fuel to burn.
A further alternative provides, during thermal weed control operations, to discharge the char C by means of the grid means 9 little by little that it is produced leaving it behind on the ground where it can act as amends. For this purpose it is possible to dimension the holes of the grid means so that they are hardly smaller than the solid elements of the fuel to burn and/or the reactor means 3 can be provided with a vibrations generator, for example of compressed air or of rotating eccentric masses kinds, to facilitate the passage of the char through the grid means 9.
As shown in Figure 7, the air blower means first 15 and second 17 are provided with respective ducts fed by a single common pumping means 43, where the flow produced by said pumping means 43 is divided into said ducts. Each duct of such air blower means first 15 and second 17 is provided with a respective delivery detector or sensor 31 and it is equipped with a respective flow regulation valve 35.
The optional bypass means 25 of the coming out gases of the device is fed by said pumping means 43 and it is equipped with a respective delivery detector or sensor 31 and with a respective regulation valve 35 of its own flow. The pumping means 43 can be of a fixed or adjustable delivery type and the regulation valves 35 are of a remote control and regulation.
The device 1 comprises digital programmable control means 45 which are equipped with a plurality of input gates for analogue or digital signals and with a plurality of output gates for remote controls.
Each delivery sensor 31 is connected to a respective input gate for signals; the pumping means 43, if of adjustable delivery type, and each regulation valve 35 of remote control type are connected to respective control output gates and are operated and controlled by the control means on the basis of an execution and stabilization program at least of the first operative condition.
In such first operative condition the control algorithms run by the control means 45 control, by means of the regulation valves, the primary air delivery (or flow) to values ranging from 5% to 25% of the value of the secondary air delivery. Alternatively, the delivery detectors 31 can be of direct reading type and the regulation valves 35 can be manually operated to control the device by a human user; in such alternative the pumping means 43 can be of fixed or manually adjustable delivery type. The first chamber means 11 can be equipped with at least one among firing means 51, fuel level sensor 53 and one or more thermal sensors 55 or an array of thermal sensors. The firing means 51 is placed near the grid means 9 and it is connected to an output gate of the control means 45 and operated by this latter to ignite the partial combustion expected in the first operative condition. The fuel level sensor 53 is placed near the closure means 7 and it is connected to an input gate of the control means 45 to provide this latter with data about the filling up of the first chamber means 11.
The sensors of the array of thermal sensors 55 are laterally arranged and they lay along the longitudinal development of the first chamber means 11. Each of such sensors of the array or the at least one thermal sensor 55 is connected to a respective input gate of the control means 45 to provide this latter with data about the operation temperature (s) of the first chamber means 11.
The outlet mouth means 5 of the second chamber means 13 can be equipped with a lambda sensor means 57 which is exposed to the coming out gases and connected to a respective input gate of the control means 45.
The data provided to the control means 45 by such fuel level sensors 53, thermal sensors 55 and lambda sensor means 57 are used by the algorithms stored into the control means 45 to control the operation conditions of the device in order to improve the efficiency and the cleaning of the operation and to control the thermal power provided for example by means of the regulation of the primary and secondary flows. The invention provides that it is possible to equip the device with thermoelectric optional cells, for example of Seebeck effect type, assigned to feed the control means 45 and the regulation valves 35 eventually operated by the control means 45, for example in the event of having a device devoid of batteries or with poor electrical autonomy or devoid of electrical feeding. The device 1 is equipped with a frame and with connections for the link to a vehicle eventually equipped with a power take-off for the operation of the pumping means 43 and/or the electrical feeding of the control means 45 and of the means and the elements 35, 51, 65 operated by them 45. Alternatively it is also provided that the device is equipped with thermoelectric cells, an accumulator or a generator or the like but that the pumping means are external; for example the air blower means first 15 and second 17 can be fed with pressurized air provided by a traction vehicle of the device or by other feedings of pressurized air external to the device.
The frame of the device can eventually house a plurality of reactor means 3 placed transversally with respect to the direction of the motion of the vehicle so as to act on a strip of land proportionally wider.
Alternatively the device 1 can be equipped with a vehicle with wheels of motorized type or truck or trailer type or manual handling wheelbarrow type where the pumping means 41, 43 are operated by the motor of this last vehicle or are of electrical type and fed by accumulators of the device or by an external electrical source connected to the pumping means to feed them.
Besides the trailer configuration for the manual handling of the device, it is also provided a version of this latter with a first shoulder portion or a shoulder strap (for example containing battery and pumping means) and a second portion manual handled (for example consisting of the reactor means eventually equipped with wheels) connected to the first portion by flexible pipes and/or ducts. So the device can be fitted for the weeding of small areas, for example edges, verges, spaces between rows of vegetables or of other plants, etc. equipping it with a frame with one or two wheels, with accumulators or engine for the pumping means and with manual regulation valves or of big surfaces equipping it with a frame which can be applied at the back or at the front of a tractor and assigned to support one or more reactor means 3 whose pumping means can be electrically, mechanically operated or operated in an hydraulic way by means of suitable sockets of the tractor and respective operation motors.
It must be observed that the device can be used also for disinfestation or for static applications such as exsiccation or dehydration of agricultural products, for thermal treatments, etc., or for disinfection with heat for example in farms and in zootechnical facilities.
The variant of the device of Figure 6 differs from the embodiment of Figure 1 because the second air blower means 17 comprises an interspace means 21 laterally delimited by an interspace wall 23 and by a portion of the side wall 19. Such interspace means 21 is fed with the secondary air flow provided by the second air blower means 17 heating such air before the inflow into the second chamber means 13 by means of a plurality of openings 24 carried out, through the interspace wall 23 of the interspace means 21, between the grid means 9 and the outlet mouth means 5. In this variant the edge of the grid means 9 matches with the interspace wall 23. This variant is very efficient and it is fitted also for low-quality fuels.
Alternatively the interspace wall 23 and the interspace means 21 can be external to the side wall 19 and, in this alternative, the openings 24 are obtained through this last side wall 19.
The invention provides that also the reactor means 3 of this variant can be made of said fictile, ceramic, refractory or geopolymeric material. Particularly, it is provided that the reactor means 3, complete with side wall 19, with interspace wall 23 with respective through-holes, with grid means 9 and with possible duct 27 and other elements of the bypass means 25 of the flow whether integral or made of more components by means of three-dimensional printing in other words by means of 3D printing of a geopolymeric material or the like. Also the closure means 7 can be obtained by means of 3D printing of a geopolymeric material or the like. Such reactor means 3 obtained by means of 3D printing of a geopolymeric material, besides being insulating, light and corrosion-resistant, allows to shape and to dimension the wall of the interspace, the interspace itself of the grip means 9 to optimize the performance and efficiency of the use during work depending on the various combustible materials.
The variant of the device of Figure 8 differs from the embodiment of Figure 7 because it comprises a pumping means 41 of adjustable delivery type for each of the air blower means first 15 and second 17 which are fed by said pumping means 41 with the respective air flows. Each pumping means 41 is feedback controlled, on the basis of the delivery provided by the respective delivery sensor 31, and the regulation valves of the air blower means first 15 and second 17 of the first embodiment can be replaced by respective check valves 33.
The optional bypass means 25 of the coming out gases of the device is fed by the pumping means itself 41 of the second air blower means 17 and it is equipped with a respective delivery sensor 31 and with a respective controlled type regulation valve 35 controlled by the control means 45.
The variant of the device of Figure 9 differs from the variant of Figure 8 because it comprises solid fuel feeding means 61 comprising a hopper means or tank means 63 for such fuel and connected by means of pipes and fuel feeding adjusting means 65, for example of motorized Archimedean screw type or belt conveyor or others, to the flow duct of the first air blower means 15 equipped with a regulation valve 35 controlled by the control means 45 and flowing into the first chamber means 11 inside which said flow drags the fuel. Said fuel feeding adjusting means 65 are connected to a respective outflow gate of the control means 45 which operate such fuel feeding adjusting means 65 to control its 65 delivery.
This variant allows to feed continuously the device and to control the power within wider intervals with respect to the preceding embodiments and variants.
Alternatively the invention provides that the feeding means 61 comprises a delivery controlled conveyor, for example of Archimedean screw or belt type or the like, controlled by the control means for feeding the solid fuel directly into the first chamber means 11.
It must be finally observed that all the embodiments and variants of the device can use solid fuel which is produced in the same place of using allowing, besides saving however guaranteed by the device of the invention, to realize a local reuse of the resources.
