Abstract

本発明は、中性子源が発生した中性子線を減速し、高速中性子の混入率が低減されていながら熱外中性子の強度が高い中性子線を出射することが可能な中性子減速照射装置を提供するものである。中性子減速照射装置(2)は、荷電粒子線が照射されて中性子源(5)が発生した中性子線を減速させる減速材(21A,21B)と、減速材(21A,21B)の周囲を囲む反射材(22)と、減速材(21A,21B)によって減速された中性子線の照射野を整形するコリメータ部(24A,24B)とを備え、減速材(21A,21B)は、中性子源(5)の下流側に配置された本体部(21A)と、本体部(21A)の上流側に配置されて中性子源(5)の周囲を囲む上流部(21B)とを有する。

Description

中性子減速照射装置
 本発明は、中性子源が発生した中性子線を減速して照射する中性子減速照射装置に関する。
 がんを治療する放射線療法の一種に、ホウ素中性子捕捉療法(Boron Neutron Capture Therapy;BNCT)がある。ホウ素中性子捕捉療法は、がん細胞に選択的に蓄積させたホウ素化合物に中性子を照射し、10B(n,α)Liの核反応により生成するα粒子やリチウム原子核によってがん細胞を破壊する治療法である。α粒子やリチウム原子核の飛程は細胞の大きさと同程度であるため、ホウ素中性子捕捉療法によると、正常細胞を大きく損傷すること無く、がん細胞のみを選択的に破壊することが可能である。
 ホウ素中性子捕捉療法においては、ボロノフェニルアラニン(Borono-phenylalanine;BPA)や、ボロカプテイト(Sodium mercapto-undecahydro-dodecaborato;BSH)を患者に投与し、これらの化合物が集積されたがん細胞に中性子線を照射する。中性子の反応断面積はエネルギが低いほど大きくなる一方で、患者の組織の深部に到達する程度の高いエネルギも必要とされる。但し、高速中性子のようにエネルギが過大であると、正常細胞までも大きく損傷してしまう。そのため、照射する中性子線は、熱外中性子の強度が高く、高速中性子の混入率は低いことが求められる。
 従来、ホウ素中性子捕捉療法は、研究用原子炉を中性子源として実施されることが多かった。しかしながら、研究用原子炉は、運転の開始及び停止に時間が掛かる上に、治療を実施する際に原子炉の運用計画と治療日程とを調整する必要が生じていた。また、既設の研究用原子炉は、維持管理費や寿命の観点から、継続的に利用を続けるのにも将来的に限界がある。そこで、近年、加速器を利用して中性子線を発生させる装置の開発が進められている。
 加速器が生成した中性子をホウ素中性子捕捉療法に利用する中性子発生装置は、一般に、荷電粒子線を発生させる加速器と、荷電粒子線が照射されて中性子線を発生するターゲットと、ターゲットが発生した中性子線を減速して被照射体に照射する中性子減速照射装置とを備える。ターゲットには、中性子源として機能するターゲット材が保持され、ターゲット材に陽子線等の荷電粒子線が照射されることにより中性子発生反応が起こる。ターゲット材としては、Li(p,n)Beの反応を生じるリチウムや、Be(p,n)B、Be(p,xn)の反応を生じるベリリウムや、核破砕反応を生じるタンタル、タングステン等の重金属について検討されている。
 リチウムやベリリウムをターゲット材とすると、重金属による核破砕反応と比較してガンマ線の発生が少なくて済むため、遮蔽が容易となり、治療の安全性も高くなる。さらに、リチウムとベリリウムとを比較すると、リチウムは、中性子収率が低く、化学的に不安定であり、融点も低いものの、低い入射陽子エネルギで中性子を発生させることが可能である。つまり、発生する中性子線のエネルギに加えて、二次放射線の発生も低度に抑えられるという優位性を持っている。入射陽子エネルギの閾値は、Be(p,n)Bの反応では約2.06MeVであるのに対し、Li(p,n)Beの反応では約1.88MeVであり、巨視的断面積はリチウムの方が入射陽子エネルギの全般にわたって大きいといった相違がある。そのため、リチウムは、加速器や中性子減速照射装置を小型化ないし軽量化するのに適したターゲット材として有望視されている。

 国際原子力機関(International Atomic Energy Agency;IAEA)は、ホウ素中性子捕捉療法に用いる中性子線について設計目標値を設定している。例えば、熱外中性子強度については、治療を短時間に効果的に行う観点から、1×10[n/cm/s]以上を推奨している。また、高速中性子混入率については、正常細胞の損傷を避ける観点から、2×10-13[Gy・cm]以下を推奨している。
 しかしながら、高速中性子の混入率を下げるために減速材の厚さを厚くすると、中性子減速照射装置が高重量化すると共に、減速材を透過して出射される熱外中性子線の強度も低下してしまう。特に、ターゲット材が固体リチウムである場合には、ターゲット材が過剰に加熱されると溶融し、照射損傷や原子数密度の分布に偏りを生じたり、漏出する虞が高くなったりするので、入射陽子エネルギは小さいことが望まれる。そのため、入射陽子エネルギが制約された中で、如何に高速中性子混入率を低減しつつ熱外中性子強度を高めるかが大きな課題となっている。
 そこで、本発明は、中性子源が発生した中性子線を減速し、高速中性子の混入率が低減されていながら熱外中性子の強度が高い中性子線を出射することが可能な中性子減速照射装置を提供することを目的とする。
 前記課題を解決するために、本発明に係る中性子減速照射装置は、荷電粒子線が照射されて中性子源が出射した中性子線を減速させる減速材と、前記減速材の周囲を囲む反射材と、前記減速材によって減速された中性子線の照射野を整形するコリメータ部とを備え、前記減速材は、前記荷電粒子線の照射方向における前記中性子源の下流側に配置された本体部と、前記照射方向における前記本体部の上流側に配置されて前記中性子源の周囲を囲む上流部とを有する。
 本発明によれば、中性子源が発生した中性子線を減速し、高速中性子の混入率が低減されていながら熱外中性子の強度が高い中性子線を出射することが可能な中性子減速照射装置を提供することができる。中性子減速照射装置から出射される熱外中性子線は、強度が高く高速中性子の混入率が低いため、減速材の厚さを薄くすることが可能である。そのため、軽量且つ小型の中性子減速照射装置を提供することができる。

 以下、本発明の一実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置について、図を参照しながら詳細に説明する。なお、各図において共通する構成については同一の符号を付して重複した説明を省略する。
[中性子発生装置]
 はじめに、本実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置が備えられる中性子発生装置の概略構成について説明する。
 図1は、中性子発生装置の概略構成を示す図である。
 図1に示すように、中性子発生装置100は、荷電粒子線発生装置1と、中性子減速照射装置2と、導管4と、中性子源としてのターゲット5と、を備えている。中性子源としてのターゲット5は、固体リチウムをターゲット材として保持している。この中性子発生装置100は、ホウ素中性子捕捉療法における中性子線源として好適に用いられる。
 中性子発生装置100において、荷電粒子線発生装置1は、所定のエネルギの陽子線等(荷電粒子線6)を発生する。荷電粒子線6は、導管4を通じてターゲット5に到達し、ターゲット5は、荷電粒子線6を照射されて所定のエネルギ帯域の中性子線を発生させる。そして、中性子減速照射装置2は、ターゲット5が出射する中性子線を減速し、照射野が整形された中性子線9を出射する。中性子減速照射装置2から出射した中性子線9は、被照射体3に照射されて中性子捕獲反応を生じる。すなわち、ホウ素が集積している被照射体3としてのがん細胞に中性子線9が照射されると、核反応により生成したα線やリチウム粒子によってがん細胞が破壊される。
[荷電粒子線発生装置]
 荷電粒子線発生装置1は、例えば、荷電粒子線として陽子線を発生する。陽子線を発生する荷電粒子線発生装置1は、図1に示すように、陽子を発生させるイオン源1aと、陽子を加速する加速器1bとを備えて構成される。
 イオン源1aとしては、例えば、電子サイクロトロン共鳴(Electron Cyclotron Resonance;ECR)イオン源が用いられる。ECRイオン源は、強磁場下に水素ガスを導入し、高周波を印加して電子サイクロトロン共鳴を生じさせることにより、水素のプラズマを高密度に生成する。そして、生成した水素イオン()は、磁気ミラーによって集積されて引き出される。ECRイオン源は、無電極放電によるため長時間にわたり安定した運転が可能である。
 加速器1bとしては、例えば、静電型加速器が用いられる。静電型加速器は、電極間に直流高電圧を印加し、一定した静電界の下で荷電粒子を加速する。静電型加速器によると、連続した荷電粒子線6を発生させることが可能である。静電型加速器としては、例えば、ダイナミトロン型加速器(IBA社製等)を用いることができる。また、コッククロフトウォルトン型、バンデグラフ型等の静電型加速器や、サイクロトロン、シンクロトロン等の高周波型加速器を用いることもできる。
[導管]
 導管4は、荷電粒子線発生装置1と、ターゲット5との間を接続している。導管4は、荷電粒子線発生装置1が出射した荷電粒子線6を、ターゲット5に導く経路を形成している。導管4には、荷電粒子線6が幅方向に発散するのを抑制する集束レンズ7が設置される。集束レンズ7としては、例えば、複数の四重極電磁石を荷電粒子線6の照射方向に沿って設置し、それぞれの極性を反転させた配置とする。なお、導管4は、図1に示すような直線状の形態に限定されるものでは無く、曲線部を有する任意形状の経路を形成していてもよい。導管4の曲線部には、荷電粒子線6を偏向させる偏向電磁石等を設置することが可能である。
[ターゲット]
 ターゲット5は、導管4の先端に設置されている。中性子源としてのターゲット5は、固体リチウムをターゲット材として保持している。固体リチウムからなるターゲット材は、例えば、陽子線を遮蔽するタンタルや、高い熱伝導率を有する銅や、鉄等を組み合わせて構成される金属基板の凹部に保持される。そして、凹部に保持された固体リチウムは、チタン製等の金属箔によって封止され、荷電粒子線6によって溶融したリチウムの漏出が防止される。また、金属基板の内部には、冷却水を通流させてターゲット材を冷却するための冷却材流路が形成される。
 ターゲット材であるリチウムは、陽子線を照射されてLi(p,n)Beの核反応により中性子線を発生する。この核反応に必要となる入射陽子エネルギの閾値は、約1.88MeVである。そのため、荷電粒子線発生装置1においては、この閾値以上であり、且つ、エネルギが過大な中性子が発生しない程度の低いエネルギを持った荷電粒子線6を生成する。具体的には、荷電粒子線発生装置1が発生する荷電粒子線6のエネルギは、4.0MeV以下、好ましくは3.0MeV以下、より好ましくは2.8MeV以下の範囲である。また、電流値は、10mA以上100mA以下、ターゲット材に対する熱負荷を避ける観点から、より好ましくは10mA以上20mA以下とする。
[第1実施形態]
 次に、本発明の第1実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置の具体的な構成について説明する。
 図2は、本発明の第1実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置の縦断面図である。
 図2に示すように、本実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置2は、減速材(21A,21B)と、反射材22と、遮蔽材(遮蔽部)23と、コリメータ部(24A,24B)とを備えている。中性子減速照射装置2は、中性子源としてのターゲット5の周囲を囲み、ターゲット5の下流側にかけて設置されている。中性子減速照射装置2は、ターゲット5が発生した中性子線を減速し、主として熱外中性子線のエネルギ帯域まで減速して、被照射体3に中性子線を照射する。
 ターゲット5が発生する中性子線は、そのエネルギに応じて、凡そ、熱中性子(Nther)と、熱外中性子(Nepi)と、高速中性子(Nfast)とに大別される。本明細書においては、エネルギが0.5eV以下の中性子を熱中性子(Nther)、0.5eVを超え10keV以下の中性子を熱外中性子(Nepi)、10keVを超える中性子を高速中性子(Nfast)と定義する。また、以下の説明において、「下流」及び「上流」の用語は、荷電粒子線6の照射方向(進行方向)における下流及び上流をそれぞれ意味するものとする。
(減速材)
 減速材(21A,21B)は、主として、中性子源としてのターゲット5が発生した中性子線を熱外中性子線のエネルギ帯域まで減速させる。図2に示すように、本実施形態に係る減速材(21A,21B)は、減速材本体(本体部)21Aと、上流側減速材(上流部)21Bとによって構成されている。
 減速材本体21A及び上流側減速材21Bは、いずれもフッ化マグネシウム(MgF)からなることが好ましい。フッ化マグネシウムは、単結晶体、及び、単結晶同士が焼結している焼結体のうちのいずれかの組織とされる。また、フッ化マグネシウムは、真密度に対するかため嵩密度(相対密度)が、95%以上、好ましくは98%以上、より好ましくは99%以上とされる。フッ化マグネシウムは、ターゲット5への入射陽子エネルギが10MeV以下である場合に、発生した中性子を効果的に減速させる能力がある。すなわち、減速材(21A,21B)がフッ化マグネシウムからなることにより、ターゲット5が出射した中性子線は主として熱外中性子線のエネルギ帯域まで減速され、高速中性子の大半については吸収される。そのため、高速中性子の混入率が低減され、且つ、強度が高い熱外中性子線を出射させることが可能となる。
 減速材本体(本体部)21Aは、ターゲット5の下流側に円柱形状ないしは多角柱形状に配置されている。減速材本体21Aは、詳細には、荷電粒子線6の照射軸と同心となるように配置され、ターゲット5とも同心となるように配置される。ターゲット5の上流側端面(図1Bにおける左端面)は、減速材本体21Aの上流側端面から、例えば、2cmから6cm離隔して配置される。なお、減速材本体21Aは、円柱形状ないしは多角柱形状を有する単一体の減速材によって構成してもよいし、円柱形状ないしは多角柱形状を呈するように複数の減速材を組み合わせて構成してもよい。また、減速材本体21Aの形状は、荷電粒子線6の照射方向の下流側に向けて縮径する円錐台形状であってもよい。円錐台形状の減速材本体21Aは、上流側端面の直径と、下流側端面の直径との比が、1以上3/2以下であることが好ましい。但し、減速材本体21Aの成形を容易にする観点からは、円柱形状ないしは多角柱形状が好ましい。
 減速材本体21Aは、厚さ(荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ)(L)が、20.0cm以上35.0cm以下であることが好ましく、この実施形態においては、25.7cm以上32.7cm以下であることがより好ましく、25.7cm以上29.3cm以下であることがさらに好ましい。厚さ(L)がこのような範囲であると、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される中性子線について高速中性子の混入率を2×10-13[Gy・cm]以下にしつつ、熱外中性子線の強度を最大化することができる。
 減速材本体21Aは、直径(荷電粒子線6の照射軸に対する法線方向の長さ)(R)が、減速材本体21Aの厚さ(L)の10/7~2倍であることが好ましい。直径(R)がこのような範囲であると、ターゲット5が出射した中性子線が効果的に減速されてコリメータ部の開口124aに到達する。そのため、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される中性子線について高速中性子の混入率を十分に低減させることができる。直径(R)は、より具体的には、40cm以上60cm以下であることが好ましく、48cm以上52cm以下であることがより好ましい。
 上流側減速材(上流部)21Bは、減速材本体21Aの上流側端面から上流側に向けて同心の円筒形状ないしは多角筒形状に配置されている。上流側減速材21Bの下流側端面は、減速材本体21Aの上流側端面に密接しており、上流側減速材21Bは、ターゲット5を円筒形状ないしは多角筒形状の内側に内包してターゲット5の周囲を囲んでいる。上流側減速材21Bは、詳細には、減速材本体21Aと同心となるように配置され、荷電粒子線6の照射軸とも同心となるように配置されている。なお、上流側減速材21Bは、円筒形状ないしは多角筒形状を有する単一体の減速材によって構成してもよいし、円筒形状ないしは多角筒形状を呈するように複数の減速材を組み合わせて構成してもよいし、減速材本体21Aと一体に成形してもよい。
 上流側減速材21Bは、周壁の厚さ(外形と内径との差)(R)が、減速材本体21Aの直径(R)の1/6~2/5倍であることが好ましい。周壁の厚さ(R)がこのような範囲であると、ターゲット5が荷電粒子線6の照射軸に対する法線方向や上流側に向けて出射した中性子線が効果的に減速されると共に、上流側減速材21Bの寸法を小型に抑えることができる。周壁の厚さ(R)は、より具体的には、8cm以上20cm以下であることが好ましく、9cm以上20cm以下であることがより好ましい。
 上流側減速材21Bは、荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L)が、減速材本体21Aの厚さ(L)の1/4~4/5倍であることが好ましい。長さ(L)がこのような範囲であると、ターゲット5が、荷電粒子線6の照射軸に対する法線方向や上流側に向けて出射した中性子線が効果的に減速されると共に、上流側減速材21Bの寸法を小型に抑えることができる。長さ(L)は、より具体的には、8cm以上20cm以下であることが好ましく、9cm以上20cm以下であることがより好ましい。
(反射材)
 反射材22は、減速材(21A,21B)の周囲を囲んでおり、中性子源としてのターゲット5が出射した中性子線を反射する。詳細には、反射材22は、減速材本体21A及び上流側減速材21Bの径方向の外側に配置され、減速材本体21A及び上流側減速材21Bを外側から覆っている。また、反射材22は、上流側減速材21Bの上流側端面を上流側からも覆っている。反射材22の上流側端面には、荷電粒子線6の照射軸と同心となるように、断面形状が円形の開口が形成されている。この開口の内面と上流側減速材21Bの内周面とは略面一に設けられており、反射材及び減速材に内包されたターゲット5に至る荷電粒子線6の経路が形成されている。
 反射材22は、中性子の散乱断面積が大きい材料によって形成される。反射材22の材料としては、例えば、黒鉛、鉄、鉛、ベリリウム等が挙げられる。反射材22は、中性子の散乱断面積が大きい一方、中性子の吸収断面積が小さいことが好ましく、鉛製又は鉛-ビスマス合金等の鉛合金製であることが特に好ましい。このような材料で反射材22を形成することにより、ターゲット5が荷電粒子線6の照射軸に対する法線方向や上流側に向けて出射した中性子線を、高い反射率で反射させてコリメータ部の開口124aに到達させることができる。そのため、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される熱外中性子線の強度を高めることができる。
(遮蔽材)
 遮蔽材(遮蔽部)23は、主として、減速材(21A,21B)から出射される高速中性子線及びガンマ線を遮蔽する。遮蔽材23は、減速材本体21A及び反射材22の下流側に配置されている。遮蔽材23は、詳細には、略面一に設けられている減速材本体21Aの下流側端面と、反射材22の下流側端面とにそれぞれ密接している。
 遮蔽材23は、中性子の捕獲反応断面積が大きく、中性子の吸収能が高い材料や、ガンマ線の遮蔽能が高い材料によって形成される。遮蔽材23の材料としては、例えば、カドミウム、インジウム、ハフニウム、ガドリニウム、ビスマス、鉛、鉄、フッ化鉛、炭化ホウ素をはじめとするホウ素化合物、パラフィン、水、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン、ホウ素-ポリエチレン等が挙げられる。遮蔽材23は、これらの材料のうちの一種以上を積層して多層構造の遮蔽材23としてもよいが、カドミウム製又はカドミウム合金製の遮蔽材を備えることが特に好ましい。このような材料で遮蔽材23を形成することにより、減速材(21A,21B)から出射される低いエネルギの中性子を効果的に吸収する一方、熱外中性子線については高い強度に維持することが可能となる。また、カドミウム製又はカドミウム合金製の遮蔽材のみで構成してもよいし、ビスマス製の遮蔽材を併用してもよい。このような材料を併用すると、ガンマ線の遮蔽を効果的に行うことができる。
 遮蔽材23は、厚さ(荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ)が、0.005cm以上0.2cm以下であることが好ましく、0.005cm以上0.15cm以下であることがより好ましく、0.008cm以上0.012cm以下であることがさらに好ましい。カドミウム製又はカドミウム合金製の遮蔽材については、0.005cm以上0.05cm以下であることがより好ましく、ビスマス製の遮蔽材については、0.005cm以上0.15cm以下であることがより好ましい。厚さがこのような範囲であると、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される熱外中性子線の強度を維持しつつ、低いエネルギの中性子を効果的に吸収し、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される熱中性子線を十分に低減させることができる。また、遮蔽材が薄肉化されて二次ガンマ線源が減少するので、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される中性子線についてガンマ線の混入率を低減させることができる。
(コリメータ部)
 コリメータ部(24A,24B)は、減速材(21A,21B)によって減速され、遮蔽材23を透過した中性子線の照射野を整形する。コリメータ部(24A,24B)は、上流側部材24Aと、下流側部材24Bとによって構成されている。コリメータ部(24A,24B)は、下流側に向かってテーパ状に縮径する開口124aを有している。開口124aは、荷電粒子線6の照射軸と同心となるように、コリメータ部(24A,24B)を貫通して設けられている。そのため、減速材(21A,21B)によって減速され、遮蔽材23を透過した中性子線は、照射野が開口124aに沿って絞られる。
 上流側部材24Aは、反射材22及び減速材本体21Aの下流側に円筒形状ないしは多角筒形状に配置されている。上流側部材24Aは、コリメータ部の開口124aが、減速材本体21Aと同心となるように配置されている。なお、上流側部材24Aは、円筒形状ないしは多角筒形状を有する単一体の部材によって構成してもよいし、円筒形状ないしは多角筒形状を呈するように複数の部材を組み合わせて構成してもよい。
 上流側部材24Aは、中性子の散乱断面積が大きい材料ないし中性子の吸収能が高い材料によって形成される。上流側部材24Aの材料としては、例えば、黒鉛、鉄、鉛、ベリリウム、カドミウム、インジウム、ハフニウム、ガドリニウム、ビスマス、フッ化鉛、炭化ホウ素をはじめとするホウ素化合物、パラフィン、水、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン、ホウ素-ポリエチレン等が挙げられる。このような材料で下流側部材24Bを形成することにより、コリメータ部(24A,24B)を透過する中性子線等を効果的に遮蔽することができる。
 上流側部材24Aは、上流側端面における内径(D)が、減速材本体21Aの直径(R)の4/5~1倍であることが好ましい。内径(D)がこのような範囲であると、コリメータ部の開口124aに入射する中性子束が高くなるので、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される熱外中性子線の強度を高めることができる。内径(D)は、より具体的には、40cm以上60cm以下であることが好ましく、48cm以上52cm以下であることがより好ましく、減速材本体21Aの直径(R)と同径であることが特に好ましい。詳細には、熱外中性子線及び高速中性子線は、荷電粒子線6の照射軸から離れるほど強度が低下するものの、高速中性子線のみが、内径(D)が50cmを超える範囲に極大値を有しているため、内径(D)が50cmよりも大きくなると、高速中性子線の強度がやや増大する。そのため、内径(D)がこのような範囲であると、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される中性子線について高速中性子の混入率を低減しながらも、熱外中性子線の強度を高めることができる。
 下流側部材24Bは、上流側部材24Aの下流側に、上流側部材24Aの下流側端面に密接して円筒形状ないしは多角筒形状に配置されている。下流側部材24Bは、詳細には、コリメータ部の開口124aが、減速材本体21Aと同心となるように配置されている。なお、下流側部材24Bは、円筒形状ないしは多角筒形状を有する単一体の部材によって構成してもよいし、円筒形状ないしは多角筒形状を呈するように複数の部材を組み合わせて構成してもよい。
 下流側部材24Bは、中性子の散乱断面積が大きい材料ないし中性子の吸収能が高い材料によって形成される。下流側部材24Bの材料としては、例えば、黒鉛、鉄、鉛、ベリリウム、カドミウム、インジウム、ハフニウム、ガドリニウム、ビスマス、フッ化鉛、炭化ホウ素をはじめとするホウ素化合物、パラフィン、水、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン、ホウ素-ポリエチレン等が挙げられる。このような材料で下流側部材24Bを形成することにより、コリメータ部(24A,24B)を透過する中性子線等を効果的に遮蔽し、中性子を照射しなくてよい正常組織への中性子線量を低減することができる。
 下流側部材24Bは、下流側端面における内径(D)が、上流側部材24Aの上流側端面の内径(D)の1/5~1/3倍であることが好ましい。内径(D)がこのような範囲であると、コリメータ部の開口124aによって中性子線が大きく整形されるので、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される中性子線の直進性を高くすることができる。内径(D)は、より具体的には、8cm以上20cm以下であることが好ましく、9cm以上15cm以下であることがより好ましい。
 コリメータ部(24A,24B)の好ましい形態は、鉛製若しくは鉛-ビスマス合金等の鉛合金製の上流側部材24A(反射材)と、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン製の下流側部材24B(遮蔽材)との組み合わせ、又は、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン製の上流側部材24A(遮蔽材)と、鉛製若しくは鉛-ビスマス合金等の鉛合金製の下流側部材24B(反射材)との組み合わせによって形成したものである。このような形態であると、コリメータ部の開口124aの出口周辺において中性子線やガンマ線の空間線量を低減させつつ、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される熱外中性子線の強度を高めることができる。また、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される中性子線の直進性を高くすることができる。
 コリメータ部(24A,24B)の更に好ましい形態は、鉛製若しくは鉛-ビスマス合金等の鉛合金製の上流側部材24A(反射材)と、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン製の下流側部材24B(遮蔽材)との組み合わせによって形成したものである。このような形態であると、逆の配置にした形態と比較して、熱外中性子が上流側部材24Aを通過して出射口に導くことができるとともに、熱中性子の混入率をより低減することができる。そのため、高速中性子の混入率を低減しながらも、減速材を薄肉化することが可能となる。また、この形態において、上流側部材24Aは、コリメータ部の開口124aの周壁を形成する内側を厚肉に設けると共に、コリメータ部の開口124aから離れた外側を内側よりも薄肉に設けることも可能である。このように上流側部材24Aを薄くしても、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される中性子線の直進性を高くすることができる。また、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン製の下流側部材24Bの外側をその分、厚肉化することが可能になるので、外側の遮蔽性を高めることができる。
 上流側部材24Aは、荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L)が、減速材本体21Aの厚さ(L)の1/7~2/5倍であることが好ましい。長さ(L)は、より具体的には、3.5cm以上14cm以下であることが好ましく、4cm以上6cm以下であることがより好ましい。また、下流側部材24Bは、荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L)が、減速材本体21Aの厚さ(L)の1/7~2/5倍であることが好ましい。長さ(L)は、より具体的には、3.5cm以上14cm以下であることが好ましく、4cm以上12cm以下であることがより好ましい。
 以上の本実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置2によると、ターゲット5の周囲を囲む上流側減速材21B(上流部)が備えられているため、ターゲット5が上流側からも減速材によって覆われる。そのため、ターゲット5が荷電粒子線6の照射軸に対する法線方向や上流側に向けて出射した中性子線の一部は、長い飛跡をたどってコリメータ部の開口124aに到達するが、上流側減速体21Bを設置することで中性子線が効果的に減速される。それ故、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される中性子線において、特に照射軸に対して法線方向や上流側に向けて出射した高速中性子の混入率を十分に低減することができる。この結果、コリメータ部の開口124aに流入する高速中性子成分が十分低減されることになり減速材を薄肉化することが可能となるので、減速材の薄肉化によって中性子減速照射装置2から出射される熱外中性子線の強度も高めることができる。また、中性子減速照射装置2を小型且つ軽量にすることができる。一例として、減速材本体21Aの厚さ(L)を、上流側減速材21Bを備えない場合と比較して、3.4cm程度短縮することが可能である。
[第2実施形態]
 次に、本発明の第2実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置の具体的な構成について説明する。
 図3は、本発明の第2実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置の縦断面図である。
 図3に示すように、本実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置2Aは、減速材(21A,21B)と、反射材22と、遮蔽材(遮蔽部)23と、コリメータ部(24A,24C,24D)とを備えている。中性子減速照射装置2Aが、前記の実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置2と異なるのは、コリメータ部の上流側部材24Aの下流側に、下流側内部材24Cと、下流側外部材24Dとを備えている点である。なお、その他の構成は、前記の実施形態と同様である。
 下流側内部材24Cと、下流側外部材24Dとは、上流側部材24Aの下流側に、上流側部材24Aの下流側端面に密接して円筒形状ないしは多角筒形状にそれぞれ配置されている。下流側内部材24Cは、円筒形状ないしは多角筒形状の内面が開口124aを形成しており、下流側外部材24Dは、下流側内部材24Cの径方向の外側に密接して配置されている。下流側内部材24C及び下流側外部材24Dは、詳細には、開口124aが、減速材本体21Aと同心となるようにそれぞれ配置されている。なお、下流側内部材24C及び下流側外部材24Dのそれぞれは、円筒形状ないしは多角筒形状を有する単一体の部材によって構成してもよいし、円筒形状ないしは多角筒形状を呈するように複数の部材を組み合わせて構成してもよい。
 上流側部材24Aと、下流側内部材24Cとは、中性子の散乱断面積が大きい材料によって形成される。上流側部材24A及び下流側内部材24Cの材料としては、例えば、黒鉛、鉄、鉛、ベリリウム等が挙げられる。上流側部材24A及び下流側内部材24Cは、中性子の散乱断面積が大きい一方、中性子の吸収断面積が小さいことが好ましく、鉛製又は鉛-ビスマス合金等の鉛合金製であることが特に好ましい。このような材料で上流側部材24A及び下流側内部材24Cを形成することにより、コリメータ部の開口124aを通じて、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される熱外中性子線の強度を高めることができる。また、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される中性子線についてガンマ線の混入率を低減することができる。なお、上流側部材24Aと下流側内部材24Cとは、一体にしてもよい。
 下流側外部材24Dは、中性子の捕獲反応断面積が大きく、中性子の吸収能が高い材料によって形成される。下流側外部材24Dの材料としては、例えば、カドミウム、インジウム、ハフニウム、ガドリニウム、ビスマス、フッ化鉛、炭化ホウ素をはじめとするホウ素化合物、パラフィン、水、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン、ホウ素-ポリエチレン等が挙げられる。下流側外部材24Dは、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン製であることが特に好ましい。このような材料で下流側外部材24Dを形成することにより、コリメータ部の開口124aの出口周辺において中性子線の空間線量を確実に低減させることができる。
 上流側部材24Aは、下流側内部材24Cが備えられるとき、荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L)が、減速材本体21Aの厚さ(L)の1/7~2/5倍であることが好ましい。また、下流側内部材24C及び下流側外部材24Dは、荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L)が、減速材本体21Aの厚さ(L)の1/25~5/7倍であることが好ましい。上流側部材24Aの照射方向の長さ(L)が長いほど、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される熱外中性子線の強度は高くなる。また、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される中性子線について熱中性子の混入率が低減される。一方、上流側部材24Aの照射方向の長さ(L)が短いほど、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される中性子線の直進性が高くなる。また、下流側内部材24Cにより、コリメータ部の開口124aの出口周辺において中性子線やガンマ線の空間線量が大きく低減する。そのため、上流側部材24Aの長さ(L)や、下流側内部材24C及び下流側外部材24Dの長さ(L)がこのような範囲であると、熱外中性子線の強度を高めて減速材を薄肉化しつつ、開口124aの出口周辺の空間線量については低減することが可能となる。上流側部材24Aの長さ(L)は、より具体的には、3.5cm以上14cm以下であることが好ましく、8cm以上12cm以下であることがより好ましい。また、下流側内部材24C及び下流側外部材24Dの長さ(L)は、より具体的には、1cm以上10cm以下であることが好ましく、4cm以上6cm以下であることがより好ましい。
 下流側内部材24Cは、周壁の厚さ(外形と内径との差)(R)が、下流側端面の内径(D)の1/4~1倍であることが好ましい。周壁の厚さ(R)が厚いほど、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される熱外中性子線の強度は高くなる。また、コリメータ部の開口124aの出口周辺において中性子線やガンマ線の空間線量が大きく低減する。一方、周壁の厚さ(R)が薄いほど、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される中性子線について高速中性子の混入率が低減する。また、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される中性子線の直進性が高くなる。そのため、周壁の厚さ(R)がこのような範囲であると、熱外中性子線の強度を高めて減速材を薄肉化しつつ、開口124aの出口周辺の空間線量については低減することが可能となる。周壁の厚さ(R)は、より具体的には、2cm以上16cm以下であることが好ましく、4cm以上12cm以下であることがより好ましい。
 以上の本実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置2Aによると、コリメータ部の上流側部材24Aの下流側に、中性子の散乱断面積が大きい材料によって形成された下流側内部材24Cが備えられているため、エネルギが保存された熱外中性子線が高い強度で開口124aから出射される。また、コリメータ部の上流側部材24Aの下流側に、中性子の吸収能が高い材料によって形成された下流側外部材24Dが備えられているため、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される熱外中性子線の強度を高めつつ、コリメータ部の開口124aの出口周辺の空間線量を低減することができる。取り分け、上流側部材24A及び下流側内部材24Cを鉛又は鉛合金とすると、コリメータ部の開口124aの全面が鉛製又は鉛合金製の反射材で形成されるため、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される熱外中性子線の強度を大きく高めつつ、出口周辺における空間線量を低減させることが可能である。
[第3実施形態]
 次に、本発明の第3実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置の具体的な構成について説明する。
 図4は、本発明の第3実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置の縦断面図である。
 図4に示すように、本実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置2Bは、減速材(21A,21B,21C)と、反射材22と、遮蔽材(遮蔽部)23Aと、コリメータ部(24A,24C,24D)とを備えている。中性子減速照射装置2Bが、前記の実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置2Aと異なるのは、減速材本体21Aの下流側に、下流側減速材21Cと、遮蔽材23Aとを備えている点である。なお、図4においては、上流側減速材21Bの周壁の厚さ(R)が異なる形態を例示しているが、その他の構成は、前記の実施形態と同様である。
 下流側減速材(下流部)21Cは、減速材本体21Aの下流側端面から下流側に向かって円錐台形状に配置されており、コリメータ部が有する開口124aに囲まれている。下流側減速材21Cの上流側端面は、減速材本体21Aの下流側端面に密接しており、下流側減速材21Cの円錐台形状の周面は、コリメータ部の開口124aに密接している。下流側減速材21Cは、詳細には、減速材本体21Aと同心となるように配置され、荷電粒子線6の照射軸とも同心となるように配置されている。なお、下流側減速材21Cは、円錐台形状を有する単一体の減速材によって構成してもよいし、円錐台形状を呈するように複数の減速材を組み合わせて構成してもよいし、減速材本体21Aと一体に成形してもよい。下流側減速材21Cは、減速材本体21Aと同様のフッ化マグネシウムからなることが好ましい。
 下流側減速材21Cは、荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L)が、減速材本体21Aの厚さ(L)の1/30~2/5倍であることが好ましい。長さ(L)がこのような範囲であると、ターゲット5が出射した中性子線が照射野を整形されながら効果的に減速される。それ故、高速中性子の混入率を低減しながらも、減速材をさらに薄肉化することが可能となり、中性子減速照射装置2から出射される熱外中性子線の強度も高めることができる。また、中性子減速照射装置2をさらに小型且つ軽量にすることができる。長さ(L)は、より具体的には、1cm以上10cm以下であることが好ましく、1cm以上4.5cm以下であることがより好ましく、3.5cm以上4.5cm以下であることがさらに好ましい。
 遮蔽材(遮蔽部)23Aは、主として、減速材(21A,21B,21C)から出射される高速中性子線及びガンマ線を遮蔽する。遮蔽材23Aは、下流側減速材21Cの下流側に配置されている。遮蔽材23Aは、詳細には、下流側減速材21Cの下流側端面に密接している。遮蔽材23Aの材料や、厚さは、前記の実施形態における遮蔽材23と同様である。遮蔽材23Aは、カドミウム製又はカドミウム合金製の遮蔽材を備えることが特に好ましい。また、カドミウム製又はカドミウム合金製の遮蔽材のみで構成してもよいし、ビスマス製の遮蔽材を併用してもよい。
 以上の本実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置2Bによると、減速材本体21Aの下流側に、下流側減速材21Cが備えられているため、コリメータ部の開口124aに入射した中性子が整形されながら効果的に減速される。そのため、高速中性子の混入率を確実に低減しつつ、強度が高い熱外中性子線を出射させることが可能となる。すなわち、高速中性子の混入率を低減しながらも、減速材を薄肉化することが可能となり、中性子減速照射装置2を小型且つ軽量にすることができる。一例として、減速材本体21Aの厚さ(L)を、図3に示す形態と比較して、3.6cmから5.5cm程度短縮することが可能である。
 なお、以上の実施形態に係る中性子減速照射装置は、本発明に趣旨を逸脱しない範囲で、種々の変形、構成の置換、構成の省略等を行うことが可能である。
 例えば、前記の中性子減速照射装置2、中性子減速照射装置2A、及び、中性子減速照射装置2Bの構成を相互に置き換えることができる。例えば、図2に示す構成に、下流側減速材21Cを付加してもよい。下流側減速材21Cを付加することにより、コリメータ部の開口124aに入射した中性子を整形させながら減速させることができる。また、このとき、上流側部材24Aについて、コリメータ部の開口124aの周壁を形成する内側を厚肉に設けると共に、コリメータ部の開口124aから離れた外側を内側よりも薄肉に設け、薄肉に設けた減肉部に遮蔽材や反射材を設けてもよい。
 また、前記の実施形態における減速材(21A,21B)は、反射材22と直接的に接して配置されている。しかしながら、減速材(21A,21B)は、反射材22との間に、接面にそって補強材を介装されていてもよい。補強材は、例えば、アルミニウム又はアルミニウム合金をはじめとする軽金属、その他の金属材、炭素材等によって形成することができる。補強材の厚さは、例えば、0.5cm以上2cm以下の範囲などにすることができる。減速材(21A,21B)を補強材で覆うことにより、中性子減速照射装置の構造を安定化させることが可能である。
 また、前記の実施形態における減速材(21A,21B)は、円筒形状ないしは多角筒形状に配置され、減速材(21C)は、円錐台形状に配置されている。しかしながら、減速材(21A,21B,21C)は、概略配置が保たれていれば、縦断面上ないし横断面上において不連続な配置であってもよい。例えば、部分円形状又は棒状の減速材(21A,21B)を周方向に間隔を空けて複数配置して概略円形状にする等してもよい。空けられた隙間には反射材等を配置することができる。
 以下、実施例を示して本発明について具体的に説明するが、本発明の技術的範囲はこれに限定されるものではない。
 中性子減速照射装置の幾何学的構造について、シミュレーションによる解析を行った結果を示す。なお、以下の解析においては、モンテカルロ法によって計算シミュレーションを行っている。
 計算コードは、PHITS (ver.2.660)、核データは、ENDF/B-VII.1を使用した。中性子源としては、15cm径の平板のリチウムのターゲットを減速材の上流側端面の近傍に設定し、中性子のエネルギと出射角度とは、LIYILEDを用いて計算した。また、ターゲットとしては、上流側から下流側に向けて、チタン0.01mm、リチウム0.14mm、タンタル0.36mm、銅1.5mm、水5.0mm、銅3.0mmが順に積層された形態を想定した。また、中性子は、ターゲットの平板の上流側端面から0.0011cmの深さにおいて半値幅3.75cmのガウス分布で発生するものとした。
 減速材の性能は、中性子減速照射装置から出射され、「Tally」において計測される中性子線につき、IAEAが設定している設計目標値を指標として評価した。具体的には、以下に挙げる、熱外中性子強度、高速中性子混入率、カレント/フラックス比、中性子空間線量率を評価した。計算粒子数は、評価項目の相対不確かさが3%未満となる10とし、統計が不十分な場合は、計算粒子数を増やして解析を行った。なお、「Tally」は、シミュレーション上の仮想的な検出部位である。「Tally」は、10cm径の円形状の平面であり、コリメータ部の出口から2.5cm離隔した位置に同心に配置して、出射される中性子線等の検出を行うものとした。
 熱外中性子強度(Nepi)は、0.5eVより高く、10keV以下のエネルギーを持つ中性子束の積分値として定義される。熱外中性子強度(Nepi)の評価は、1×10[n/cm/s]以上を目標値とした。
 高速中性子混入率(D)は、高速中性子が付与する吸収線量と熱外中性子束の比であり、次の数式1によって定義される。Nfastは、高速中性子強度、Kは、中性子カーマ系数である。高速中性子混入率(D)の評価は、2×10-13[Gy・cm]以下を目標値とした。

 ガンマ線混入率(D)は、ガンマ線が付与する吸収線量と熱外中性子束の比であり、次の数式2によって定義される。Gは、全エネルギにおけるガンマ線線量、Kは、ガンマ線カーマ系数である。ガンマ線混入率(D)の評価は、2×10-13[Gy・cm]以下を目標値とした。

 熱中性子比(Nt/e)は、熱中性子束と熱外中性子束の比であり、次の数式3によって定義される。熱中性子比(Nt/e)の評価は、0.05以下を目標値とした。

 カレント/フラックス比(C/F比)は、中性子線の直進性を示す指標であり、次の数式4によって定義される。θは、「Tally」への入射角に相当し、Tallyの法線と中性子線の入射方向とが成す角を示す。カレント/フラックス比(C/F比)の評価は、0.7以上を目標値とした。

 中性子空間線量率(S)は、コリメータ部の出口周辺の空間線量率分布を示す指標であり、次の数式5によって定義される。rは、「Tally」の中心を原点とする径方向の距離である。Wは、次の数式6によって定義される放射線加重係数である。中性子空間線量率(S)の評価は、r=25cmにおいて0.01以下を目標値とした。

 はじめに、コリメータ部の形状について評価した。具体的には、コリメータ部の開口124aの入口径(上流側部材24Aの上流側端面の内径(D))、出口径(下流側部材24Bの下流側端面の内径(D))を変数とし、高速中性子混入率(D)が、2×10-13[Gy・cm]以下との目標値を充足するように減速材の厚さを変えて解析した。
 なお、中性子減速照射装置は、図2に示す形態において、減速材として直径50cmの減速材本体21Aのみを備え、上流側減速材21Bを備えないものとした。遮蔽材23は、上流側から順に、0.1cmのカドミウム板、1cmのビスマス板を積層し、コリメータ部は、5cmのフッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン製の上流側部材24Aと、5cmの鉛製の下流側部材24Bとにより構成した。また、中性子減速照射装置の全径は、100cm、ターゲット5を備える反射材22の開口は、直径20cm、長さ37cmとした。
 図5は、コリメータ部の入口径及び出口径と、熱外中性子強度との関係を示す図である。また、図6は、コリメータ部の入口径及び出口径と、カレント/フラックス比との関係を示す図である。
 図5及び図6において、横軸は、コリメータ部の入口径(上流側部材24Aの上流側端面の内径(D))[cm]-出口径(下流側部材24Bの下流側端面の内径(D))[cm]を示す。図5における、縦軸は、熱外中性子強度(Nepi)[×10 n/cm/s]を示し、図6における、縦軸は、カレント/フラックス比(C/F比)を示す。
 図5及び図6に示すように、入口径50[cm]-出口径10[cm]において、熱外中性子強度(Nepi)が最大となり、カレント/フラックス比(C/F比)は破線で示す目標値を上回った。また、いずれの組み合わせにおいても、ガンマ線混入率(D)及び熱中性子比(Nt/e)は目標値を充足した。但し、中性子空間線量率(S)は、凡そ0.1となり、目標値を充足しなかった。
 続いて、コリメータ部の開口124aの入口径(上流側部材24Aの上流側端面の内径(D))を50cmに固定し、出口径(下流側部材24Bの下流側端面の内径(D))を変化させて解析した。
 図7は、コリメータ部の出口径と、熱外中性子線強度との関係を示す図である。また、図8は、コリメータ部の出口径と、カレント/フラックス比との関係を示す図である。
 図7及び図8において、横軸は、コリメータ部の出口径(下流側部材24Bの下流側端面の内径(D))[cm]を示す。図7における、縦軸は、熱外中性子強度(Nepi)[×10 n/cm/s]を示し、図8における、縦軸は、カレント/フラックス比(C/F比)を示す。
 図7に示すように、出口径が9~15cmであるとき、熱外中性子強度(Nepi)が高くなっている。一方、図8に示すように、カレント/フラックス比(C/F比)は、出口径が凡そ11cm以下において破線で示す目標値を上回った。以上のとおり、入口径が50cmであり、出口径が10cmである組み合わせが優れる結果となった。
 次に、コリメータ部の構造について評価した。具体的には、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン製の下流側内部材24Cを備える場合と、鉛製の下流側内部材24Cを備える場合とを、下流側内部材24Cの厚さ(荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L))を変えて解析した。
 なお、中性子減速照射装置は、図3に示す形態において、直径50cmの減速材本体21Aのみを備え、上流側減速材21Bを備えないものとした。遮蔽材23は、0.01cmのカドミウム板により形成し、コリメータ部は、照射方向の長さ(L)が10cmの鉛製の上流側部材24Aと、周壁の厚さ(R)が5cmの下流側内部材24Cと、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン製の下流側外部材24Dとにより構成した。また、中性子減速照射装置の全径は、100cm、ターゲット5を備える反射材22の開口は、直径20cm、長さ37cmとした。
 図9は、コリメータ部の構造と、熱外中性子強度との関係を示す図である。また、図10は、コリメータ部の構造と、カレント/フラックス比との関係を示す図である。
 図9及び図10において、横軸は、コリメータ部の下流側内部材24Cの厚さ(荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L))[cm]、○のプロットは、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン製の下流側内部材24Cを備える場合、●のプロットは、鉛製の下流側内部材24Cを備える場合を示す。図9における、縦軸は、熱外中性子強度(Nepi)[×10 n/cm/s]を示し、図10における、縦軸は、カレント/フラックス比(C/F比)を示す。
 図9に示すように、解析した厚さ(荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L))の範囲では、下流側内部材24Cが、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン製である場合、及び、鉛製である場合のいずれにおいても、熱外中性子強度(Nepi)は目標値を上回った。但し、鉛製の下流側内部材24Cを備える場合に、より熱外中性子強度(Nepi)が高められた。一方、図10に示すように、カレント/フラックス比(C/F比)は、鉛製の下流側内部材24Cを備える場合に、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン製である場合よりも低下した。但し、厚さを増すことにより、カレント/フラックス比(C/F比)は破線で示す目標値を上回った。なお、ガンマ線混入率(D)は、いずれの場合についても目標値が充足された。一方、熱中性子比(Nt/e)は、鉛製の下流側内部材24Cを備える場合のみ目標値が充足された。
 次に、減速材の形状について評価した。減速材として減速材本体21Aと上流側減速材21Bとを備える中性子減速照射装置を、上流側減速材21Bを備えないものと比較し、中性子源が出射する方向成分毎に評価した。具体的には、中性子源が発生点から全方向に出射する場合、発生点から下流側(0~90sr)のみに出射する場合、発生点から上流側(90~180sr)のみに出射する場合のそれぞれについて解析した。
 なお、中性子減速照射装置は、図3に示す形態において、直径50cm、厚さ31.5cmの減速材本体21Aを備えるものとした。上流側減速材21Bは、荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L)を20cm、周壁の厚さ(R)を15cmとした。遮蔽材23は、0.01cmのカドミウム板により形成し、コリメータ部は、照射方向の長さ(L)が10cmの鉛製の上流側部材24Aと、照射方向の長さ(L)が5cmであり、周壁の厚さ(R)が5cmの鉛製の下流側内部材24Cと、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン製の下流側外部材24Dとにより構成した。また、中性子減速照射装置の全径は、100cm、ターゲット5を備える反射材22の開口は、直径20cm、長さ37cmとした。
 図11は、減速材の形状と、熱外中性子線強度との関係を示す図である。また、図12は、減速材の形状と、高速中性子混入率との関係を示す図である。
 図11及び図12において、「無」は、上流側減速材21Bを備えない形態、「有」は、上流側減速材21Bを備える形態を示す。上流側減速材21Bを備えない形態は、該当部位を反射材22で置換したものである。「全」は、中性子源が全方向に出射するものとした場合、「下流」は、中性子源が下流側のみに出射するものとした場合、「上流」は、中性子源が上流側のみに出射するものとした場合である。図11における、縦軸は、熱外中性子強度(Nepi)[×10 n/cm/s]を示し、図12における、縦軸は、高速中性子混入率[×10-13 Gy・cm]を示す。
 図11に示すように、上流側減速材21Bを備えることにより、特に、上流側の成分について、熱外中性子強度(Nepi)が高められた。また、図12に示すように、上流側減速材21Bを備えることにより、高速中性子混入率(D)が低減した。取り分け、上流側の成分について、高速中性子混入率(D)が顕著に低減しており、上流側に出射した中性子が上流側減速材21Bによって散乱されて、長い飛跡をたどって出射されることが確認された。
 続いて、上流側減速材21Bの荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L)、周壁の厚さ(R)を変数とし、高速中性子混入率(D)が、2×10-13[Gy・cm]以下との目標値を充足するように減速材の厚さを変えて解析した。
 図13は、上流側減速材の厚さ及び長さと、熱外中性子強度との関係を示す図である。また、図14は、上流側減速材の厚さ及び長さと、中性子空間線量比との関係を示す図である。
 図13及び図14において、横軸は、上流側減速材21Bの周壁の厚さ(R)[cm]-上流側減速材21Bの長さ(L)[cm]を示す。図13における、縦軸は、熱外中性子強度(Nepi)[×10 n/cm/s]を示し、図14における、縦軸は、中性子空間線量率(S)を示す。
 図13及び図14に示すように、上流側減速材21Bを備えることにより、上流側減速材21Bを備えない場合(図における「0-0」)と比較して、熱外中性子強度(Nepi)は高くなり、中性子空間線量率(S)は低減されるようになった。また、上流側減速材21Bを備えることにより、高速中性子混入率(D)、ガンマ線混入率(D)、熱中性子比(Nt/e)及びカレント/フラックス比(C/F比)は、いずれも目標値を充足した。そして、減速材本体21Aの厚さは、上流側減速材21Bを備えない場合(図における「0-0」)に、32.7cmで高速中性子混入率(D)の目標値を充足していたところ、上流側減速材21Bを備える場合、最大(図における「10-20」)で29.3cmに短縮された。
 次に、下流側減速材の厚さについて評価した。具体的には、減速材として減速材本体21Aと上流側減速材21Bと下流側減速材21Cとを備える中性子減速照射装置につき、減速材本体21Aの厚さ(荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L))、下流側減速材21Cの厚さ(荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L))を変数とし、高速中性子混入率(D)が、2×10-13[Gy・cm]以下との目標値を充足するように減速材の厚さを変えて解析した。
 なお、中性子減速照射装置は、図4に示す形態において、直径50cmの減速材本体21Aを備えるものとした。上流側減速材21Bは、荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L)を20cm、周壁の厚さ(R)を10cmとした。遮蔽材23Aは、0.01cmのカドミウム板により形成し、コリメータ部は、照射方向の長さ(L)が10cmの鉛製の上流側部材24Aと、照射方向の長さ(L)が5cmであり、周壁の厚さ(R)が5cmの鉛製の下流側内部材24Cと、フッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン製の下流側外部材24Dとにより構成した。また、中性子減速照射装置の全径は、100cm、ターゲット5を備える反射材22の開口は、直径20cm、長さ37cmとした。
 図15は、下流側減速材の厚さと、熱外中性子強度との関係を示す図である。また、図16は、下流側減速材の厚さと、減速材本体の厚さとの関係を示す図である。
 図15及び図16において、横軸は、下流側減速材21Cの厚さ(荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L))[cm]を示す。図15における、縦軸は、熱外中性子強度(Nepi)[×10 n/cm/s]を示し、図16における、縦軸は、減速材本体21Aの厚さ(荷電粒子線6の照射方向の長さ(L))を示す。
 図15に示すように、下流側減速材21Cの厚さが凡そ0.5cm以上4.5cm以下の範囲において、熱外中性子強度(Nepi)が高められた。そして、図16に示すように、下流側減速材21Cの厚さが増すほど、減速材本体21Aの厚さを薄肉化することができた。具体的には、減速材本体21Aの厚さ(L)が、3.6cm程度短縮された。また、下流側減速材21Cを備えることにより、高速中性子混入率(D)、ガンマ線混入率(D)、熱中性子比(Nt/e)及びカレント/フラックス比(C/F比)は、いずれも目標値を充足した。

Claims (4)

  1.  荷電粒子線が照射されて中性子源が発生した中性子線を減速させる減速材と、
     前記減速材の周囲を囲む反射材と、
     前記減速材によって減速された中性子線の照射野を整形するコリメータ部とを備え、
     前記減速材は、前記荷電粒子線の照射方向における前記中性子源の下流側に配置された本体部と、前記照射方向における前記本体部の上流側に配置されて前記中性子源の周囲を囲む上流部とを有する中性子減速照射装置。
  2.  前記荷電粒子線の照射方向における前記減速材の下流側に配置され、高速中性子線を遮蔽する遮蔽部を備え、
     前記遮蔽部は、カドミウム製又はカドミウム合金製の遮蔽材を備える請求項1に記載の中性子減速照射装置。
  3.  前記コリメータ部は、前記照射方向に向かって縮径する開口を有し、
     前記開口は、鉛製又は鉛合金製の反射材によって形成され、前記照射方向における前記反射材の下流側にフッ化リチウム-ポリエチレン製の遮蔽材が配置された請求項1又は請求項2に記載の中性子減速照射装置。
  4.  前記コリメータ部は、前記照射方向に向かって縮径する開口を有し、
     前記減速材は、前記本体部の下流端から前記照射方向における下流側に向かって円錐台形状に配置された下流部をさらに有し、
     前記下流部は、前記コリメータ部が有する前記開口に囲まれる請求項1から請求項3のいずれか一項に記載の中性子減速照射装置。
