Description
Title: Elevating Platform Field of the invention
This invention relates to elevating platforms, such as an elevating work platform arranged for linear, elevating movement along a support structure to enable an operative on the platform to access elevated locations, e.g. to access goods or perform tasks at the elevated location.
Summary of the invention
The invention provides an elevating platform comprising a base, an elongate support structure located on the base, and a work platform mounted for elevating movement along the support structure, wherein the support structure is extendable along its length.
By having an extendable support structure, rather than a support structure of fixed length, so the work platform of the elevating platform is able to access a greater range of heights and so is more versatile.
The support structure is of elongate form and is located on the base to pass in a generally upward direction, so that linear movement of the work platform along the support structure results in the work platform moving between lowered and raised positions, and intervening positions therebetween.
The work platform is arranged for linear movement along the support structure by suitable drive means. It is currently preferred to use a rack and pinion drive, e.g. with the support structure comprising a rack gear running along its length with which a pinion gear mounted on the work platform co-operates. Other drive arrangements may also be adopted, e.g. a wire rope drive. The movement may be powered, e.g. by means of an electric motor and drive mounted on the work platform, or maybe manually operable, e.g. with suitable control means being provided on the work platform.
The support structure is extendable along its length between a retracted, lowered or closed condition in which it has minimum length, and an extended, raised or opened condition in which it has maximum length, and intervening positions there between
Means are preferably provided for securing the support structure in a number of different relative conditions.
The work platform may be moved along the support structure when in any of these relative conditions.
The support structure desirably comprises two or more support members, typically each of elongate form, arranged for linear movement with respect to each other.
For example, one support member may be telescopically received within another support member, with means being provided for causing relative movement thereof, such as a hydraulic cylinder arrangement.
In a preferred arrangement, the support structure comprises two (or more) side-by- side support members, arranged for linear extending movement in a direction away from the base, with the work platform mounted thereon. The support members may be secured together in a range of different relative positions, e.g. by use of a locking pin.
Each side-by-side support member preferably has a rack gear running along its length, engageable by the pinion gear of the work platform in the preferred arrangement discussed above. The support members can be secured together in a range of relative positions (of different length) with the rack teeth in alignment so the platform can travel along the full length of the support structure, with the pinion gear engaging the rack gear of one or other or both of the support members.
The elevating platform is typically mobile (and may be self-powered or manually movable) and the base may be provided with ground-engaging wheels to facilitate movement, with suitable locking means to fix the base in position.
The work platform typically comprises a base portion, on which an operative can stand, with a cage or guard rail to protect an operative.
The elevating platform can provide a replacement for a step ladder that is considerably easier and safer to use.
An embodiment of elevating platform in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of illustration, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic view of the elevating platform, with the support structure in extended condition, and
Figure 2 is a side view of part of the arrangement of Figure 1. Detailed description
Referring to the drawings, the illustrated elevating platform 10 comprises a base 12 (shown schematically only) with a work platform 14 mounted thereon via a linearly extendable support structure 16 comprising first and second side-by-side elongate support members, 18, 20, each having a rack gear 22 running along its length, with the support members 18, 20 being telescopically interconnected by means (not shown). The support members can be moved between a fully lowered or closed position, a fully raised or opened condition as shown, and intermediate positions, with locking means (not shown) such as a locking pin, being provided for securing the support members together in any desired relative positions, with the teeth of the two side-by- side racks in alignment.
The work platform 14 comprises a base 24, on which an operative can stand and a guard rail 26, including a top guard rail 28 for extending partially around an operative. The platform is mounted for linear movement along the support members 18, 20 by means of brackets 30, 32 with associated pinion gear 34 that co-operates with the rack gears 22 of the members 18, 20.
When the support structure is in the fully lowered or closed condition, the pinion gear 34 engages the rack of only the first support menber 18. The second support member 20 (and any additional support members) are located slightly above the pinion gear 34, and so are free for telescopic extension movement. When the support members are extended and locked together (with rack teeth aligned), the pinion drive is able to move along the full length of the support structure to any desired height for use.
