Description

ROTARY KNOB WITH IMPROVED STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY
The present invention relates to a household appliance, in particular to a laundry treatment appliance. The present invention more particularly relates to the rotary knob on the control panel of the household appliance.
Household appliances such as laundry treatment appliances are commonly known in the art. The laundry treatment appliance generally comprises a control panel and a rotary knob which is disposed onto the control panel. The user selects the washing/drying program through the rotary knob. The control panel is generally located on the front of the household appliance, and thus frequently exposed to the risk of accidents. In accordance with the common safety standards, the rotary knob may not disconnect from the panel or disintegrate into its components under the influence of a certain amount of mechanical stress from the outside.
WO2014161787 (A1) discloses a laundry treatment appliance which has a rotary knob.
A problem with the prior art laundry treatment appliance is that it a poses a risk to the safety of the users when the rotary knob is disintegrated into its components for one reason or another.
An objective of the present invention is to provide a rotary knob which overcomes the aforementioned problem of the prior art in a cost-effective way and which enables an improved and secure assemblage of its components.
This objective has been achieved by the rotary knob as defined in claim 1, and the household appliance as defined in claim 3. Further achievements have been attained by the subject-matters respectively defined in the dependent claims.
The rotary knob of the present invention comprises: a first component, a second component and a third component which are provided separately and adapted to fit together; one or more resilient claws which are formed onto the first component, wherein each resilient claw has an undercut; one or more first abutments which are each formed onto the second component and adapted to abut against the undercut of the respective resilient claw when the first component and the second component are fitted together; one or more second abutments which are each formed onto the third component and adapted to block the movement of the resilient claw away from the respective first abutment when the third component is fitted together with the first component and the second component.
A major advantageous effect of the present invention is that the first component, the second component, and the third component of the rotary knob can be securely prevented from dismantling even under considerably high mechanical stresses from the outside by virtue of the second abutment which locks the resilient claw in place. Thereby, the common safety standards can be easily met, and thus the risk to the safety of the user can be eliminated or reduced as much as possible. Another major advantageous effect of the present invention is that the mechanical strength of the resilient claw can be comparatively reduced when designing the rotary knob since the second abutment securely locks, after assembly, the resilient claw in place and thus strengthens the connection between the first abutment and the resilient claw. Thereby, the production costs can be reduced both in material and labor. With the present invention, the user satisfaction can be further increased.
In an embodiment, the second component covers the circumferential surface of the rotary knob, and the third component covers the front surface of the rotary knob whereas the first component is enclosed by the second component and the third component. In this embodiment, the hub that receives the shaft of the control panel is formed onto the first component. This embodiment is particularly advantageous as the front surface and the circumferential surface of the rotary knob i.e., the first component and the second component which are at least partly exposed to the outside can be designed in various forms having a high tactile and visual quality whereas the interior of the rotary knob i.e., the first component which is entirely concealed can be designed from a robust material which is comparatively less expensive.
In another embodiment, the second component is manufactured from metal. Alternatively, other relatively robust materials can be used. This embodiment is particularly advantageous as the mechanical strength of the rotary knob can be improved, and thus the first component and the third component can be protected from harm and damage of the lateral mechanical stresses which act onto the circumferential surface of the rotary knob.
In other alternative embodiments, the first component, the second component and the third component may be fitted together through one or more form-fitting connections and/or force fitting connections or bonding connections. These embodiments are particularly advantageous as the first to third components can be fitted in various different ways which best suit the materials used for manufacturing the rotary knob.
Additional features and additional advantageous effects of the rotary knob of the present invention will become more apparent with the detailed description of the embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 – is a schematic sectional view of the rotary knob according to an embodiment of the present invention, taken along the line A-A in Fig. 3;
Figure 2 – is a schematic sectional view of the rotary knob according to an embodiment of the present invention, taken along the line B-B in Fig. 3;
Figure 3 – is a schematic rear view of the rotary knob according to an embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 4 – is a schematic exploded sectional view of the rotary knob according to an embodiment of the present invention, taken along the line C-C in Fig. 6;
Figure 5 – is a schematic exploded sectional view of the rotary knob according to an embodiment of the present invention, taken along the line D-D in Fig. 6;
Figure 6 – is a schematic exploded rear view of the rotary knob according to an embodiment of the present invention.
The reference signs appearing on the drawings relate to the following technical features.
  1. Rotary knob
  2. First component
  3. Second component
  4. Third component
  5. Resilient claw
  6. Undercut
  7. First abutment
  8. Second abutment
  9. Circumferential surface
  10. Front surface
  11. Hub
  12. Attachment means
The rotary knob (1) is suitable for use on the control panel of a household appliance, in particular a laundry treatment appliance.
The rotary knob (1) of the present invention comprises: a first component (2), a second component (3) and a third component (4) which are provided separately and adapted to fit together; one or more resilient claws (5) which are formed onto the first component (2), wherein each resilient claw (5) has an undercut (6); one or more first abutments (7) which are each formed onto the second component (3) and adapted to abut against the undercut (6) of the respective resilient claw (5) when the first component (2) and the second component (3) are fitted together; one or more second abutments (8) which are each formed onto the third component (4) and adapted to block the movement of the resilient claw (5) away from the respective first abutment (7) when the third component (4) is fitted together with the first component (2) and the second component (3) (Fig.1).
The household appliance of the present invention comprises the rotary knob (1). The rotary knob (1) is disposed onto the control panel.
In alternative embodiments, the household appliance is provided as a laundry treatment appliance such as a laundry washer and/or laundry dryer.
In another embodiment, the second component (3) is adapted to cover the circumferential surface (9) of the rotary knob (1); and the third component (4) is adapted to cover the front surface (10) of the rotary knob (1); and the first component (2) is enclosed by the second component (3) and the third component (4). In this embodiment, the first component (2) includes the hub (11) for receiving a shaft of the control panel (Fig. 2).
In another embodiment, the resilient claws (5) and the second abutments (8) extend in the opposite axial directions (Fig.1).
In another embodiment, the first component (2) is provided with an attachment means (12) for attaching the rotary knob (1) to the respective aperture on the control panel.
A major advantageous effect of the present invention is that the first component (2), the second component (3), and the third component (4) of the rotary knob (1) can be securely prevented from dismantling even under considerably high mechanical stresses from the outside by virtue of the second abutment (8). Thereby, the common safety standards can be easily met, and thus the risk to the safety of the user can be eliminated or reduced as much as possible. Mechanical strength of the resilient claw (5) can be comparatively reduced when designing the rotary knob (1) since the second abutment (8) securely locks, after assembly, the resilient claw (5) in place and thus strengthens the connection between the first abutment (7) and the resilient claw (5). Thereby, the production costs can be reduced both in material and labor. With the present invention, the user satisfaction can be further increased.
