Description

LIGHTING APPARATUS PROVIDED WITH ORIENTATION ADJUSTMENT MEANS
********************
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to the technical field of lighting apparatuses and in particular to the technical field of recessed lighting apparatuses comprising optics unit orienting means by means of which it is possible to change the orientation of the emitted light beam.
BACKGROUND ART
An important category of lighting apparatuses comprises orientable light sources. Lighting apparatuses of this type allow to adapt the direction of the emitted light beam to the particular installation conditions and allow to highlight objects or surfaces by suitably directing said light beam with respect thereto.
In some lighting apparatuses the orientation of the emitted light beam may be chosen and changed at will by the user (e.g. the majority of indoor lighting apparatuses); other times this operation may require the intervention of specialized personnel, or still it has to be carried out in the production step of the lighting apparatus. The latter is the case, for example, of the recessed outdoor lighting apparatuses which generally comprise a sealed optics compartment within which the orientable optics are housed. Depending on the specific need of the user, the optics are suitably oriented in the testing and final testing step and the apparatus is subsequently sealed closed, ready to be installed.
These operations are carried out, as said, during the final production steps, often in the testing and final testing step, so as to carry them out in a controlled environment, away from any elements dangerous for the internal parts of the apparatus. The recessed outdoor lighting apparatuses are installed, often, in positions exposed to atmospheric elements capable to quickly degrade the internal components thereof. The oxidation of the electrical contacts, the corrosion of the mechanical parts and the deterioration of the heat sink means are among the main causes of malfunctions due to the exposure of said lighting apparatuses to the atmospheric elements. Therefore, in case it is required to change the direction of the light beam emitted by the apparatus due to changed needs of the user, performing the operation of changing the optics orientation involves the opening of the optics compartment and the inevitable contamination of the inside of said optics compartment due to the introduction of moisture and polluting elements potentially dangerous for the above reasons. Clearly, the change of direction of the light beam, in this type of apparatuses is recommended to be carried out by a professional installer who may apply the precautions required to avoid the disadvantages described, providing for opening the sealed compartment of the apparatus in a controlled environment, away from any pollutants.
It is an object of the present invention, therefore, to introduce a lighting apparatus provided with orientation adjustment means which may be operated from the outside of the compartment in which the optics of the apparatus are housed. In case of outdoor lighting apparatuses comprising sealed optics compartments, the use of the present invention allows to make changes to the settings relating to the orientation of the light beam on site, avoiding the need to act on the apparatus in a controlled environment, away from any pollutants.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
With reference to the attached Figures 1 and 2, a first preferred embodiment of the present invention comprises a lighting apparatus comprising a compartment 10, provided with an opening 1 1 and a lid 12, said compartment 10 comprising an illuminating body 13 therein, comprising in turn at least one lighting source 14, optics 15 adapted to accommodate at least one lighting source 14 and comprising an opening 16 adapted to allow the light emission along a main direction substantially orthogonal to the plane of said opening; a first support 17 integrally and thermally associated with said optics 15 and a second support 18 associated with said first support 17 so as to allow said first support 17 to rotate about a first axis 19 orthogonal to the upper resting surface of said second support 18; actuating means associated with said first support 17 and with said second support 18 and adapted to adjust the orientation of said at least one lighting source 14, said actuating means being operable from the outside of said compartment 10.
In greater detail, the cooperation between said first and said second support allows to achieve a double rotation of said optics 15 about a first axis 19 perpendicular to the plane of the upper resting surface of said second support 18 and about a second axis 20 perpendicular to the plane of said opening 1 1 .
To achieve said double rotation said actuating means associated with said first support 17 and with said second support 18 comprise first rotation means adapted to rotate said first support 17 about a first axis 19 perpendicular to the plane of the upper resting surface of said second support 18 and second rotation means adapted to rotate said second support 18 about a second axis 20 perpendicular to the plane of said opening 1 1 .
Said first and said second rotation means comprise a first 21 and a second 22 actuating knob which can be accessed externally to said compartment 10, respectively.
In a first preferred embodiment of the present invention, said second support 18 comprises an upper resting surface inclined with respect to the opening 1 1 of said compartment 10 by a first angle a while said first support 17 comprises a lower resting surface inclined with respect to the opening 16 of said optics 15 by a second angle β - said angles a and β even being possibly chosen of an equal value - said upper resting surface and said lower resting surface comprising mutual engagement means adapted to keep said upper resting surface and said lower resting surface in contact and adapted to further allow said first support 17 to rotate about a first axis 19 perpendicular to the plane of the upper resting surface of said second support 18. Said first rotation means, for example, comprise a first shaft 24, comprising in turn said first knob 21 associated with a first end of said first shaft 24 and external to said compartment 10, and a coupling flange 25 associated with a second end of said first shaft 24, said coupling flange 25 being integrally associated with said first support 17;
said second rotation means comprise a second shaft 26, comprising in turn said second knob 22 associated with a first end of said second shaft 26, the second end of said second shaft 26 being integrally associated with said second support 18.
In this way, by means of said first and said second knob, the user may maneuver, from the outside of the optics compartment 10 and without the need for accessing therein, the optics 15, transmitting the two rotations described on the first 17 and the second support 18, associated with said optics 15.
The second knob 22 is in fact directly connected to the second support 18 by means of said second shaft 26 and acts by controlling the rotation of said second support 18 which sets in rotation also said first support 17, integral therewith. Said first support 17, in turn, sets in rotation the optics 15 and thus the light beam emitted by the light source 14 contained in said optics 15.
In this preferred embodiment of the present invention, shown in the attached Figures 1 and 2, the first knob 21 acts, by means of the first shaft 24, on the coupling flange 25, arranged in the housing 31 , obtained in said second support 18 and such that the surface of said coupling flange 25 is flush with the upper surface of said second support 18. The coupling flange 25 is integrally connected to said first support 17 so that the rotation of said coupling flange 25 causes the rotation of said first support 17 about a first axis 19 perpendicular to the plane of the upper resting surface of said second support 18.
The user who operates said first knob 21 , therefore, sets in rotation the optics 15, integral with said first support 17, by changing the orientation of the light beam emitted by the light source 14 contained in said optics 15.
The required minimum size of said compartment 10 is restricted by the need to ensure that, in any position, the luminous flux emitted by said optics 15 completely exits said compartment 10 without impacting, not even partially, the walls of said compartment 10.
In a second preferred embodiment of the present invention, said first rotation means comprise a first shaft 24, comprising in turn said first knob 21 associated with a first end of said first shaft 24 which is external to said compartment 10, and a coupling flange 25 associated with a second end of said first shaft 24, said coupling flange 25 comprising a toothed edge adapted to be engaged with a toothed wheel 30, said toothed wheel 30 being integrally associated with said first support 17;
In this second embodiment of the present invention, shown in the attached Figures 2 and 3, the first knob 21 acts, by means of the first shaft 24, on the coupling flange 25 which engages, by means of a special toothed edge, with a toothed wheel 30. Said flange 25 and said toothed wheel 30 are both arranged in the housing 31 , obtained in said second support 18 and such that the surfaces of said coupling flange 25 and of said toothed wheel 30 are flush with the upper surface of said second support 18. Said toothed wheel 30 is integrally connected to said first support 17 so that the rotation of said coupling flange 25 causes the rotation of said toothed wheel 30, and thus of said first support 17, about a first axis 19 perpendicular to the plane of the upper resting surface of said second support 18. The user who operates said first knob 21 , therefore, sets in rotation the optics 15, integral with said first support 17, by changing the orientation of the light beam emitted by the light source 14 contained in said optics 15.
In this second embodiment of the present invention, the required minimum size of said compartment 10 - adapted to allow the optics 15 to completely rotate and to ensure that, in any position, the luminous flux emitted by said optics 15 completely exits said compartment 10 - are lower with respect to the case of the first preferred embodiment of the invention previously shown. In this case, therefore, it is possible to achieve an apparatus of a very small size, especially when the used lighting sources 14 employed are constituted by LEDs.
Advantageously, said second shaft 26 and said second knob 22 may comprise a through hole adapted to house said first shaft 24. In this way, the overall size of the apparatus according to the present invention may be further reduced. In order to ensure that the inside of the compartment 10 is isolated from external elements, the apparatus according to the present invention is provided with a sealed lid. Said lid 12 preferably comprises a frame 27 provided with fixing means at the edge of the opening 1 1 of said compartment 10, a transparent central part 28 made of glass or plastic material and a seal 29 adapted to be interposed between said frame 27 and said central part 28 and between said central part 28 and the edge of said opening 1 1 allowing said lid 12 to be fluid-tightly fastened. Said lid 12 is adapted to ensure a seal in accordance with the IP68 standard generally required for lighting apparatuses for outdoor use.
In case the lighting sources employed comprise LEDs, to ensure the required heat sink, said first support 17 preferably comprises heat sink means associated with said at least one LED and will be in thermal contact with said second support. The thermal transmission between said first 17 and said second support 18 may be facilitated and optimized by means of the use of suitable heat conductive pastes according to techniques known in the art.
Advantageously, finally, said optics 15 may comprise suitable means to act on the luminous flux emitted by said at least one light source 14. According to techniques known in the art, said optics 15 may employ reflectors and/or lenses associated with said at least one light source 14 and adapted to suitably shape the emitted luminous flux.
