Description
COUPLING APPARATUS FOR FABRICS AND THE LIKE
The present invention relates to a coupling apparatus for fabrics and the like.
It is known that in the making of an item of clothing the stitched seams and the joints are a considerable factor both in manufacturing and for the functional and aesthetic aspects.
These points can in fact cause, or vice versa compromise, aesthetics, functionality, waterproofing where required and the very durability of the item.
For these reasons, in recent years the various flaps of fabric that compose the item of clothing, instead of being sewn to each other, can be mutually glued or subjected to thermal bonding.
These solutions allow to achieve a performance, in terms of aesthetics, waterproofing and durability of the item, which is similar if not higher than that of a traditional stitched seam.
Apparatuses for mutually coupling fabrics by adhesive bonding or thermal bonding are known which are constituted usually by a worktable, optionally heated, on which a presser acts.
The presser, by compressing together the two flaps of fabric, between which a layer of adhesive or thermal bonding material has been interposed, facilitates their mutual coupling, also ensuring the blocking of such fabrics during the process.
These apparatuses allow to spread the surface pressure in a substantially uniform manner thanks to the fact that the presser and the worktable are flat.
However, these apparatuses do not allow to couple in an efficient, precise and reliable manner flaps of fabric which, once coupled, necessarily must have a non-planar shape (i.e., have three-dimensional contours), such as for example, in the case of an item of clothing, the cuffs, sleeves, collar and the like, or in a rucksack, bag or sac, the corner portions.
Existing apparatuses for coupling by adhesive bonding or thermal bonding of the flaps that have to assume three-dimensional contours not only might cause unwanted stretching and extensions of the fabric but might also cause the displacement of the flaps of fabric during the coupling process, causing possible lacks of contiguity between them, and the consequent occurrence of aesthetic and functional defects.
The aim of the present invention is to solve the problems described above, by providing a coupling apparatus for fabrics and the like that allows to mutually couple the portions of fabrics and the like which, by having to assume once coupled a three-dimensional spatial contour, must necessarily be coupled along to an edge that has a three-dimensional spatial extension.
Within this aim, an object of the invention is to devise a coupling apparatus for fabrics and the like that allows rapid, effective, accurate and reliable coupling between the two portions of fabric along the entire edge thereof.
Another object of the invention is to devise a coupling apparatus for fabrics and the like that allows accurate and stable mutual positioning of the portions of fabric to be coupled.
A further object of the invention is to devise a coupling apparatus for fabrics and the like in which the portions of fabric to be coupled do not undergo unwanted stresses which might compromise the quality of the joint.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a coupling apparatus for fabrics and the like that has low costs, is relatively simple to provide in practice and is safe in application.
This aim and these and other objects that will become more apparent hereinafter are achieved by a coupling apparatus for fabrics and the like, comprising a presser that acts on a respective die that defines a support for at least one first flap of fabric to be coupled to a second flap of fabric, characterized in that said die is substantially rigid, said presser comprising an element made of elastically deformable material, said element being
functionally associated with a respective pneumatic device for the uniform forcing of its lower wall on said die, with the interposition of said underlying flaps of fabric.
This aim and these objects are also achieved by means of a method for coupling fabrics with an apparatus comprising a presser that acts on a respective die that defines a support for at least one first flap of fabric to be coupled to a second flap of fabric, which consists in:
- applying a layer of coupling material on the first flap of fabric;
- arranging said first flap of fabric, provided with said coupling layer, above said die;
- arranging said second flap of fabric on said layer;
- arranging an elastically deformable element of said presser so that it faces and is proximate to said two flaps of fabric;
- actuating, for a predefined time interval, a pneumatic device functionally associated with said element, for the uniform forcing of its lower wall onto said die, with the interposition of said underlying flaps of fabric;
- removing, after a predefined time, said element;
- removing the finished product.
Further characteristics and advantages of the invention will become better apparent from the description of a preferred but not exclusive embodiment of the coupling apparatus for fabrics and the like according to the invention, illustrated by way of nonlimiting example in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

With reference to the figures, the numeral 1 generally designates a coupling apparatus for fabrics and the like.
The apparatus 1 comprises a presser 2 that acts on a respective die 3 that defines a support for at least one first flap of fabric 4 to be coupled to a second flap of fabric 5.
The expression "flap of fabric" is understood to include also a part, an edge, a region, an end, a margin, a shred, a fragment, a piece, a cutting, a strip, a band, a portion of fabric.
According to the invention, the die 3 is substantially rigid, providing a support for the flaps of fabric 4 and 5.
In particular, the presser 2 comprises an element 6 made of elastically deformable material.
The element 6 is functionally associated with a respective pneumatic device for the uniform forcing of its internal wall 7 onto the die 3, with the interposition of the underlying flaps of fabric 4 and 5.
According to a solution that is particularly useful and practical, shown in Figures 1, 4, 5, 6 and 7, the element 6 can have an internal cavity 8 that is connected to a plurality of openings 9 that are distributed on its internal wall 7.
The cavity 8 can be connected to air suction means.
The pressure reduction, even to vacuum generation, induced by the air suction means in the cavity 8 causes the forced adhesion and the consequent compression of the element 6 on the die 3, with the optional interposition of the underlying flaps of fabric 4 and 5, due to atmospheric pressure.
The presence of the openings 9 on the entire internal wall 7 of the element 6 causes the pressure between the element 6 and the flaps of fabric 4 and 5 to be uniform in every point.
This will allow to avoid unwanted stretching and extensions of the flaps of fabric 4 and 5.
According to a solution that is particularly efficient and effective, shown in the accompanying Figures 9 to 12, the element 6 can consist of an enclosure A, made of elastically deformable material, which is coupled hermetically and is connected to respective air suction means.
Said means generate a pressure reduction, even to vacuum generation, inside the enclosure A, with consequent forcing of the enclosure A on the die 3, with interposition of the underlying flaps of fabric 4 and 5.
The enclosure A can have a flexible tubular shape, such as for example the shape of a bag.
According to a solution that is particularly useful and practical,
shown in the accompanying figures, the die 3 can be contoured to define a resting surface that has a shape and dimensions that are substantially complementary to those of the finished product to be provided, i.e., provided with contoured portions, concavities, inflections and convexities.
The accompanying Figure 12 exemplifies a die 3 that has substantially the shape of the collar of a shirt.
The die 3 can comprise, on its face 10 directed toward the flap of fabric 4 and 5, a plurality of removable inserts that are contoured to define a plurality of different resting surfaces whose shape and dimensions are substantially complementary to those of the various finished products to be provided.
The die 3 can be provided with internal cavities C that are connected to a plurality of through holes 11 defined on its face 10 directed toward the flap of fabric 4 and 5, such holes connecting the internal cavities C to the outside environment.
The cavities C can be connected to a respective suction unit.
The action of such suction unit causes the adhesion and consequent blocking of the flaps of fabric 4 and 5 to the face 10 of the die 3.
In this manner it is likewise simple and quick for the operator to arrange the flaps of fabric 4 and 5 on the die 3 without them being able to slip or move.
Furthermore, a correct and stable placement of the flaps of fabric 4 and 5 will avoid any unwanted stretching and extensions of the flaps of fabric 4 and 5 during the coupling process.
It is possible to interpose, between the first flap of fabric 4 and the second flap of fabric 5, a layer of material 12 for their mutual coupling.
In particular, the layer 12 can be made of a material chosen preferably among adhesive, thermoadhesive, and the like.
The layer 12 can be applied to one or both of the flaps 4 and 5 by using a brush or by spraying.
The layer 12 can be applied on a protective sheet or inserted between two protective sheets.
The presence of the protective sheets allows to handle the layer 12, protecting it in particular from dust and dirt.
For types of fabric that are not resistant to the melting point of the chosen thermoadhesive material, in order to couple the two flaps of fabric 4 and 5 it is possible to use adhesive materials that do not require being heated.
If a layer of coupling material 12 provided with two protective sheets is used, it is necessary to remove beforehand the first protective sheet in order to associate the adhesive intermediate layer 12 with the edge of the first or of both of the flaps of fabric 4 and 5 before proceeding with their coupling.
The flap of fabric 4, provided with the layer 12 and with the second protective sheet, is arranged accurately on the die 3.
One then proceeds with the removal of the residual protective sheet from the first or from both of the flaps of fabric 4 and 5 and subsequently with the manual placement of the second flap of fabric 5 on the die 3.
In this step is necessary to verify carefully that the edge of the second flap of fabric 5, provided or not with the layer 12, is arranged above the layer 12 previously applied to the first flap 4.
More particularly, the apparatus 1 can comprise means 13 for heating at least one portion of the die 3.
This solution is preferable if the layer of coupling material 12 comprises thermoadhesive products.
The presence of the means 13 in fact allows the heating of the thermoadhesive material and therefore an optimum coupling between the two flaps of fabric 4 and 5.
In any case, the possibility is not excluded to arrange inside the die 3 a tube 14 with metallic walls inside which a high-temperature fluid is made
to flow.
The high-temperature fluid, by flowing over the walls of the tube 14, transfers heat to the die 3.
In any case, the possibility to use other heating technologies to add heat to the die 3 is not excluded.
More particularly, the apparatus 1 can comprise means 13 for cooling at least one portion of the die 3.
The presence of the cooling means 13 allows to cool rapidly the flaps 4 and 5 of fabric for the cross-linking of the coupling layer 12 and allows the stable joining of the two flaps of fabric 4 and 5.
The cooling means 13 can comprise for example a tube 14 with metallic walls inside the die 3, in which a cooling fluid is made to flow for the rapid cooling of the die 3 and therefore of the flaps of fabric 4 and 5.
As an alternative, the cooling means 13 can be provided by means of an annular element provided with a plurality of respective nozzles for the emission of a refrigerated fluid (for example air). The annular element, and therefore the nozzles, faces and is proximate to the flaps of fabric 4 and 5 above the die 3.
In any case, the possibility to use additional and different cooling means 13 is not excluded.
The apparatus 1 according to the invention can be inserted in production lines in which other machines for coupling fabrics and the like of a known type are also operating which perform coupling by flat adhesive bonding or by sewing.
In particular, the method for coupling fabrics and the like with an apparatus 1 that comprises a presser 2 that acts on a respective die 3 that defines a support for at least one first flap 4 of fabric to be coupled to a second flap 5 of fabric consists in:
- applying a coupling layer 12 on the first flap of fabric 4;
- arranging the first flap of fabric 4, provided with the coupling layer
12, above the die 3;
- arranging the second flap 5 of fabric on the die 3 contiguously with the flap 4 and superimposing it on the layer 12;
- arranging an elastically deformable element 6 of the presser 2, so that it faces and is proximate to the two flaps of fabric 4 and 5;
- operating, for a predefined time interval, a pneumatic device that is functionally associated with the element 6, for the uniform forcing of its lower wall 7 onto the die 3, with the interposition of the underlying flaps of fabric;
- removing the element 6 after a predefined time;
- removing the finished product.
The application of the coupling layer 12 to the first flap can be provided before arranging the flap 4 on the die 3 in a time that is masked, also by using apparatuses for mutually coupling fabrics of a known type.
The method according to the invention can provide for another step that consists in actuating a suction element that is connected to a plurality of through holes 11 defined in the face 10 of the die 3 that is directed toward the flap of fabric 4 and 5.
In particular, the method according to the invention can provide for an additional step that consists in actuating heating means 13 for heating at least one portion of the die 3.
More particularly, the method according to the invention can provide for an additional step that consists in actuating cooling means 13 for cooling at least one portion of the die 3.
It is useful to specify that it is essential to keep the flaps of fabric 4 and 5 under tension (by means of the action of the suction means) both during the action of the pneumatic device and when the heating means 13 and/or the cooling means 13 are in operation.
In particular, the suction means must be deactivated only following the substantial and complete cooling of the flaps 4 and 5.
The chemical compounds that are present in the layer of coupling material 12 in fact cross-link after heat-sealing and only at low temperatures.
Accordingly, if the flaps 4 and 5 have not cooled completely, the chemical compounds that are present in the coupling layer 12 do not crosslink and therefore even an accidental displacement of the flaps 4 and 5 might lead to their separation.
If the apparatus 1 comprises the presser in the embodiment that provides for the presence of the enclosure A, such enclosure A is arranged so as to accommodate internally the die 3, on the surface of which the two flaps of fabric 4 and 5 have been applied beforehand, taking care to block the enclosure A around the suction duct 15.
Subsequently, one proceeds by operating the air suction means, which produce a pressure reduction, even to vacuum generation, inside the enclosure A, causing the forcing of the enclosure A onto the die 3 and onto the two flaps of fabric 4 and 5 to be coupled.
Advantageously, the coupling apparatus 1 for fabrics and the like allows to mutually couple the portions of fabrics and the like that by having to assume, once coupled, a three-dimensional spatial contour, must necessarily be coupled along an edge that has a three-dimensional spatial extension.
Effectively, the coupling apparatus 1 for fabrics and the like allows quick, effective, accurate and reliable coupling between the two portions of fabric along the entire edge thereof.
Usefully, the apparatus 1 according to the invention allows accurate and stable mutual positioning of the portions of fabric to be coupled.
Conveniently, the coupling apparatus for fabrics and the like 1 has such characteristics that the portions of fabric to be coupled are not subjected to unwanted stresses that might compromise the quality of the joint.
The invention thus conceived is susceptible of numerous modifications and variations, all of which are within the scope of the appended claims; all the details may further be replaced with other technically equivalent elements.
In the exemplary embodiments shown, individual characteristics, given in relation to specific examples, may actually be interchanged with other different characteristics that exist in other exemplary embodiments.
In practice, the materials used, as well as the dimensions, may be any according to requirements and to the state of the art.
