Abstract
A perspective drawing instrument comprising a stencil having perforation along a set of perspective lines converging to a vanishing point.
Description
Perspective Drawing Instrument This invention relates to perspective drawing instruments.
US3492727 discloses a draftsman's board and square for use in making perspective drawings, a combination of two components, the board having means for orienting the square with respect to vanishing points marked on the board. This is a complex combination, quite complicated to understand and use.
The present invention provides a single, simple instrument, straightforward in use that achieves substantially the same ends as the board and square of US3492727.
The invention comprises a perspective drawing instrument comprising a stencil having perforation along a set of perspective lines converging to a vanishing point.
The stencil may have two or more vanishing points and two or more sets of converging perspective lines. Accordingly, in an embodiment the invention provides a perspective drawing instrument comprising a stencil having perforation along two sets of perspective lines converging to two vanishing points.
The stencil may also have at least one 'vertical' line intersecting one or more of the perspective lines, representing a vertical direction on a drawing made using the instrument.
The vanishing point or points may be within or outwith the stencil.
A vanishing point may be at infinity, meaning that the lines are parallel, in which case they may be used for parallel projection drawing. If there are two sets of lines with an included angle of 120°, at + and - 60° to a vertical line, the stencil may be used for isometric drawing. Stencils may be designed for dimetric, trimetric and other parallel projections.
Perforation may be in the form of pencil point slots and/or holes along the perspective lines and their vanishing point.
The stencil may be rectangular in outline, with a vanishing point at one corner, or with vanishing points at corners on the same edge. Accordingly, in an embodiment the invention provides a perspective drawing instrument comprising a stencil having perforation along at least one set of perspective lines converging to a vanishing point, the stencil being rectangular in outline, with at least one vanishing point at one comer. At least one edge may be graduated, which may be the edge with the vanishing points.
The instrument may have at least one curved formation, which may be in an edge of the stencil, along which a curved line may be drawn.
The stencil may be fashioned from a transparent plastic material, similarly to other known drawing instruments such as rulers, set squares and protractors.
A perspective drawing instrument according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of instrument;
Figure 2 is a magnified view of a part of the instrument of Figure 1 ; and
Figure 3 is a plan view of a second embodiment.
The perspective drawing instrument comprises a stencil 11 of rectangular shape, made from a transparent plastics material, having perforation 12 along a set of perspective lines 13.
The stencil also has multiple 'vertical' lines 15 intersecting one or more of the perspective lines 13, representing a vertical direction on a drawing made using the instrument.
The instrument of Figures 1 and 2 has its perspective lines 13 converging to vanishing points 14 within the stencil 11. There are two crossing sets of perspective lines 13 converging to vanishing points 14 at corners on the same edge 11a, which is graduated.
The instrument of Figure 3 has its perspective lines 13 converging at infinity, which is to say they are parallel. This stencil they may be used for parallel projection drawing. The two sets of lines have an included angle of 120°, being at at + and - 60° to the vertical lines 15, so that the stencil can be used for isometric drawing.
Stencils with lines at other angles can serve for dimetric, trimetric and other parallel projections.
Perforation 12 is in the form of pencil point slots 12a and holes 12b.
A convenient size for the instrument has a long edge of some 150mm. More than one edge may be graduated, and the graduation may be metric or imperial.
Curved formations 16 are shown in one edge of the stencil of Figure 3, along which curved lines can be drawn. The curved formations 16 comprise major and minor arcs of ellipses and can be used to draw an isometric representation of a circle.
