Abstract

A method for showing relative traffic conditions on a map, and a method for selecting a travel route. The method for showing relative traffic conditions on a map comprises the following steps: segmenting roads on a map (101); obtaining current traffic conditions and historic average traffic conditions for the same time of day for each segmented road (103); on the basis of said current traffic conditions and said historic average traffic conditions, calculating relative traffic conditions for each segmented road (105); and, displaying on the map the calculated relative traffic conditions for each segmented road (107). The method for selecting a travel route comprises the following steps: on the basis of a departure point and a destination point, identifying on the map multiple candidate travel routes (201); obtaining current traffic conditions and historic average traffic conditions for the same time of day for each candidate travel route (203); on the basis of said current traffic conditions and said historic average traffic conditions, calculating relative traffic conditions for each candidate travel route (205); and, selecting a travel route on the basis of the relative traffic conditions for each candidate travel route (207).
