Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a method for reproducing informative contents in a radio-television program, as well as to a related kit and radio-television communication system. More precisely, it relates to the reproduction of informative contents which are appropriate for the final user.
  • informative contents refers, for example, to commercial advertisements, movie trailers, news bulletins, weather forecasts, presentations of a broadcaster's program schedule, and so on, i.e. all those audio and/or video contents which are meant to provide information to users (of course, the actual radio-television programs are not included).
  • the informative contents that are currently transmitted by broadcasters are directed towards all users belonging to the radio-television broadcasting network.
  • a radio-television apparatus tunes to a radio-television channel, it will reproduce radio- television programs and informative contents as if they were a single audiovisual stream, in the same fully transparent manner for the users.
  • users are very different from one another, and some of them might not be interested in certain informative contents. For example, a user might not appreciate viewing a specific news bulletin, or an advertisement for products in which he/she is not interested.
  • apparatuses for audio/video signal reproduction which comprise a memory (e.g. a hard disk or a flash memory) for recording radio-television programs, so that a user can watch them at a later time, after they have been actually broadcast by the broadcaster.
  • a memory e.g. a hard disk or a flash memory
  • Such reproduction apparatuses may be a computer, a set-top box, a decoder (for digital terrestrial, satellite or Internet streaming), a videogame console, a smartphone, a tablet, etc.
  • the user de facto will have two solutions: the first one is to skip the informative contents included in the recorded program by simply fast-forwarding the recording; the second one is to use playback apparatuses that allow removing the informative contents already at recording time, e.g. PVR ("Personal Video Recorder") apparatuses known in the art.
  • PVR Personal Video Recorder
  • the first solution is not very practical for a user. Let us assume that a recorded radio-television program lasts one hour and contains three advertising sections; every time an advertising section is shown, the user will have to act upon the reproduction apparatus to execute to so-called "fast-forward" command, thus wasting time. This is also very annoying because what the user wants is to enjoy the vision of the desired recorded program.
  • the second solution has some drawbacks as well.
  • the user will not have to carry out any operation on the reproduction apparatus, he/she will not be informed about any informative contents that might be of interest for him/her.
  • this will be detrimental for all those actors who benefit, in economical and visibility terms, from the broadcasting of their informative contents, e.g. advertising companies and companies paying for advertising space, and broadcasters, who will not be able to count the users who record a program (who generally will play it at a desired later time), since there will be no assurance that the recorded program will be actually watched, and when.
  • the user's reproduction apparatus may be supplied by the radio-television service provider, and the latter may inhibit within the very apparatus the "fast-forward" function for skipping informative contents. This is often the case when the radio-television service provider wants to be certain that informative contents will actually be proposed to the user, so as to be able to economically exploit such feature with the informative content companies that pay the provider for broadcasting said informative contents.
  • a method for reproducing informative contents in a radio-television program, along with a related kit and radio-television communication system, wherein the informative contents are adjusted in accordance with the individual users' interests by taking into account their preferences as concerns advertisements, news bulletins, weather forecasts, preferred programs, etc.
  • the invention allows adjusting and updating the informative contents during the reproduction of a recorded radio-television program. More in detail, “updating” refers herein to entering recent informative contents, relative to the time when a user plays the recorded radio-television program, during the reproduction of said radio-television program.
  • FIG. 1 illustrates a radio-television communication system according to the prior art
  • FIG. 2 illustrates a radio-television communication system according to the invention.
  • radio-television communication refers to communication of television and/or radio signals in satellite and/or digital terrestrial broadcasting mode.
  • the system 10 comprises, on the user side, at least one radio-television reception apparatus 1.
  • Said apparatus 1 may be, for example, a computer equipped with a radio- television decoder, a set-top box, a satellite decoder and/or a decoder configured for receiving and decoding digital terrestrial radio-television transmissions, a PVR ("Personal Video Recorder") decoder, a videogame console, a smartphone, a tablet, and so on.
  • the apparatus 1 comprises at least one processor 3 adapted to execute machine instructions, a radio-television signal receiver 4, and first memory means 5.
  • the apparatus 1 is thus adapted to receive and decode radio-television signals coming from a radio-television broadcasting network 7.
  • Said radio-television broadcasting network 7 may be of the satellite or terrestrial type.
  • the system 10 further comprises a "play out" 11 of a radio broadcasting service provider; said provider may be, for example, a radio-television broadcaster.
  • the playout 11 is simply the full system (hardware and software) used by radio-television providers for broadcasting programs.
  • broadcasting takes place by means of computerized systems, made up of software and video servers containing the radio- television contents to be broadcast.
  • the service provider broadcasts digital radio-television programs, i.e. it broadcasts audiovisual contents in "multiplex" form.
  • the apparatus 1 will tune to the frequency corresponding to a given multiplex, and a suitable filter will direct towards the decoder of the apparatus 1 only the packets of interest.
  • a multiplex of audiovisual contents may include, for each program being broadcast, the following packets:
  • the service provider will, by means of its playout 11, alternate the informative contents with the contents of live radio-television programs (it must also be taken into consideration that the contents being broadcast are de facto stored in video servers as audiovisual multimedia files). For example, let us assume that a program of a football game is being broadcast live; at the time of an advertising break (example of informative content), the broadcasting direction (not shown in the drawings) will send an encoded command to the playout 11, e.g.: "advertising break number 2". In other words, the command will define a "playlist" of informative contents, i.e. the service provider will have already defined how many advertisements will be broadcast during the "advertising break number 2", i.e. which ones and in which order.
  • the "playlist” will include the identification codes of four advertisements already stored in the broadcaster's servers.
  • codes may be as follows: "Nutella AK25 + Alfa Romeo ZZ23 + Barilla YU9 + BMW KE3".
  • the broadcasting direction will send a command to the playout 11, said command containing the code of the "playlist”.
  • the playout 1 1 will execute the following operations:
  • the video server will reproduce the first advertisement
  • the playout 11 will switch and direct towards its own head-end and broadcasting network the output of the video server where the second advertisement is stored;
  • the process will be iterated for all advertisements that need to be broadcast; when all four advertisements have been broadcast, the playout 11 will switch again to direct the live radio-television content (football game) towards its own headend and broadcasting network.
  • live radio-television content football game
  • the main radio-television content that must be broadcast is a recorded one (e.g. a movie stored in the video server), it will be likewise possible to automatize the entry of informative contents.
  • the provider will decide beforehand at which time instants (during the reproduction of the movie) the informative content will have to be entered, i.e. a montage process will be carried out.
  • a sequence e.g. in a file
  • the sequence is stored in a suitable scheduler (an apparatus that manages events based on programming times), and the playout 11 (in communication with the scheduler) will then reproduce all contents.
  • the system 10 additionally comprises a control module 12 connected to the provider's playout 11, to second memory means 15, in particular a database, and to a profiling server 13.
  • the profiling server 13 is also connected to the second memory means 15.
  • the profiling server 13 executes a profiling algorithm that allows associating one or more typologies of informative contents with a user profile. This may be permitted according to the preferences expressed by each user with the provider, e.g. when subscribing to the radio-television service (typically for a commercial provider), or via the provider's Internet site (by accessing a personal profile web page or by filling a questionnaire about personal preferences), or through user viewing statistics, or through a user's personal data, such as, for example, his/her home address or other data deduced by appropriate third-party services (including service providers and data banks, whether public or private ones). All the personal data of the users, along with the typologies of informative contents associated with the individual user profiles, are stored into the second memory means 15, which may be logically structured as a database.
  • the association between an informative content and a user profile is made by comparing the user's preferences with the subject of the informative content (this operation is executed by the profiling algorithm residing in the profiling server 13). For example, if a user A has a preference for sports, then most or all of the informative contents where sports are the main subject will be associated with the user profile A; if the user likes do-it-yourself products, then most or all of the informative contents regarding DIY will be associated with the user profile A, and so on for any subject of the informative content, whether a product advertisement, a news bulletin, weather forecasts, a movie or radio-television program trailer, or any other type of informative content.
  • This association between an informative content and a user profile is then stored into the second memory means 15 by the profiling server 13.
  • the profiling algorithm will create a user code profile for each user registered in the second memory means 15 and an informative content code univocally identifying an informative content.
  • the control module 12 is physically and logically interposed between the profiling server 13 and the playout 11; more in detail, the control module 12 is configured for reading the user profiles and the informative contents associated therewith, which are stored in the second memory means 15.
  • the informative contents and the user profiles will be periodically updated by the provider, i.e. all new informative contents will be associated with the user profiles by the profiling server 13, all new users will be stored into the second memory means 15, and the profiles of the existing users in the second memory means 15 will be updated, e.g. when user's personal data have been modified because the user has moved, the number of family components has changed, important purchases have been made (houses or cars), and so on.
  • the control module 12 is also configured for transmitting to the playout 11 all the informative contents at the provider's disposal (including those associated with the user profiles); the playout 11 will then transmit said informative contents on an asynchronous PID ("Packet IDentifier") of a multiplex (therefore in the radio-television broadcasting network 7) in a continuous and cyclical manner (this mode is also known as "carousel"). If, for example, two hundred informative contents need to be broadcast, the playout 11 will transmit the first content, then the second one, and so on up to the two-hundredth informative content; the transmission will then be repeated again from the first content in a cyclical manner.
  • Packet IDentifier Packet IDentifier
  • the playout 11 will cyclically transmit them all again.
  • the playout 11 may transmit (still cyclically and periodically) any "new" contents immediately, followed by pre-existent ones.
  • the "new" informative contents that have been added must have been previously associated with at least one user profile.
  • the informative contents are appropriately transmitted in such a way as to exploit the frequency band of the radio-television communication channel of the broadcasting network 7; as an alternative, a dedicated frequency band may be provided to this purpose.
  • the informative contents may be transmitted overnight, or in general when band demand is likely to be reduced.
  • the informative contents may be transmitted by the provider by means of the communication network 9 (Internet, optical fiber, telephone duplex cable, SIM or "Subscriber Identity Module” data, etc.)
  • the communication network 9 Internet, optical fiber, telephone duplex cable, SIM or "Subscriber Identity Module” data, etc.
  • control module 12 is configured for creating a profiled informative content data packet, which comprises:
  • profile code 1 associated with contents 1, 2 and 3 + “profile code 2 associated with contents 4 and 5" + ... + “profile code N associated with contents x, y and z”.
  • the profiled informative content data packet contains information associating profiled informative contents (informative content code) with a specific user profile (user profile code).
  • control module 12 When the control module 12 has completed the creation of the profile informative content data packet, the latter will be sent to the playout 11, which will transmit it in the radio-television broadcasting network 7.
  • the informative contents and the informative content data packet will be received by at least one apparatus 1 of the user, which will store into its own first memory means 5 only those informative contents relating to the associated user profile.
  • the apparatus 1 is univocally associated with a profile code (this association is preferably made via the serial number of the apparatus 1 or subscription), and this will allow it to selectively choose which informative contents must be stored, thanks to the profile code associated with the informative content code included in the profiled informative content data packet.
  • the apparatus 1 For example, if the apparatus 1 is associated with the profile code "033" and receives the following data packet: "profile code 033 associated with contents 1, 2 and 3" + “profile code 34 associated with contents 4 and 5", then the apparatus 1 (particularly the processor 3) will compare its own profile code "033" (stored in the first memory means 5) with all the profile codes received. When the profile code matches one of the received ones, then the apparatus 1 will read from the data packet the informative contents to be stored; in this case, it will store into the first memory means 5 the contents 1 , 2 and 3.
  • ID Cont a specific ID
  • the profiled informative content data packet includes such ID.
  • ID Cont's of the informative contents of the profile code "033" are 1, 2 and 3.

  • an apparatus 1 may receive and store its own informative contents based on an update in "pull” mode.
  • the user of the apparatus 1 makes, via a GUI (Graphic User Interface) of the apparatus 1, a request for an update of the profiled informative contents stored in the memory means 5.
  • the update request essentially comprises the user profile code, e.g. "033”, and is addressed to the control module 12 via the communication network 9; the control module 12 will then make a verification on the basis of the profile code received, i.e.
  • the control module 12 will add them to the informative contents transmitted in "carousel" mode by the playout 11, or it will directly transmit them by using the communication network 9; the apparatus 1 will afterwards receive them. If there are no new informative contents, the control module 12 will send to the apparatus 1, through the communication network 9, a message like the following: "No new contents available".

  • the playout 11 will suspend the transmission of the current program and, almost simultaneously, the apparatus 1 will reproduce in succession the informative contents stored locally (in the first memory means 5).
  • the playout 11 will resume the transmission of the current program and the apparatus 1 will suspend the reproduction of the informative contents and will reproduce the current program again.
