Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CLOSURE CAPPING HEADS
The present invention relates generally to a capping head for closures and the like. In some aspects and embodiments the present invention provides a capping head chuck with new a pick-system.
In an aspect of the invention there is provided a closure capping head for applying to a container, the head comprising one elastic element for gripping onto a closure, the elastic element is attached to a chuck, wherein the chuck comprising at least one, for example six, cleaning windows.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the picking member / elastic element consists of one piece.
In a further preferred embodiment of the present invention, the elastic element is a spring pick element.
In one embodiment the spring pick element comprises one or more spring or feather elements.
In a preferred embodiment, the spring pick element comprises six spring elements.
In some embodiments the spring pick element is inserted into the chuck In a preferred embodiment the chuck comprising at least one, preferably 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 recesses serving as cleaning windows for the chuck and/or the spring pick element.
The present invention also provides a spring pick element comprising six spring or feather elements.
Referring to Fig. I of the drawings a standard chuck with a ball-based pick-system is shown. The capping head uses ball bearings to grip a closure for pick-up and capping. The balls are held with an elastic ring (O-ring made of EPDM).
To prevent the balls from falling out (for example if the O-ring fails, e.g. by a cracked O-ring) a protector must be installed in addition to the balls and the O-ring.
The disadvantage: dirt and/or bacteria may accumulate in the cavities inherent to this system. The present invention is more particularly shown and described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 2 and 3 of the drawings shows a sprung pick system ( I ) formed in accordance with the present invention. One or more spring or feather elements (6) are provided on a spring pick element (4) for gripping onto a closure (5).
Preferably, I , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, I I , 12, 1 3 or 14 spring and/or feather elements are provided on a spring pick element for gripping onto a closure. More preferably six spring and/or feather elements are provided on a spring pick element.
In this embodiment the spring pick element is attached or attachable, or forms part of a chuck 2. Thereby, the pick element is protected by the chuck and no further protection element is needed. Thus, in a preferred embodiment, the capping head of the present invention exhibit i.e. does not need a protector.
The chuck housing 2 exhibit a series of six recesses 3 which are equally spaced and downwardly oriented as shown in Fig. 2. These recesses are called cleaning windows 3 which can be used to clean and disinfect the chuck. As further shown in Fig. 2, the amount of cleaning windows correlates with the number of spring elements.
The new chuck spring member benefits: The spring element consists of a piece (with, in this embodiment, six spring elements).
The spring element is inserted in the chuck (there is no additional protection).
The chuck remains clean, since the spring element as well as the chuck is cleaned by six (in this embodiment) windows 3 in the chuck. Although illustrative embodiments of the invention have been disclosed in detail herein, with reference to the accompanying drawings, it is understood that the invention is not limited to the precise embodiments shown and that various changes and modifications can be effected therein by one skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention.
