投影光学系及びこれを有する画像投影装置
 本発明は、ヘッドアップディスプレイ装置等に用いる投影光学系及びこれを有する画像投影装置に関する。
 特許文献1は、表示画像を構成する表示光を出射するDMD(Digital Mirror Device)と、DMDから受光した表示光を、光強度分布が略均一な拡散光として出射する透過型スクリーンと、透過型スクリーンからの出射光を反射する拡大ミラーとを備えたヘッドアップディスプレイ装置を開示している。拡大ミラーから出射された表示光は、ウインドシールドで反射させることによって運転者に表示画像の虚像を視認可能とされる。このヘッドアップディスプレイ装置においては、透過型スクリーンとしてマイクロレンズアレイを用いている。
 特許文献2には、光源から射出されたレーザ光を位相変調する位相変調素子と、位相変調素子で変調された光をフーリエ変換するFTレンズと、FTレンズからの出射光による中間像が形成される透過型スクリーンとしてのディフューザと、中間像を拡大する2つの拡大ミラーとを備えるヘッドアップディスプレイ装置について記載されている。

 特許文献1、2に記載の投影光学系の構造によると、透過型スクリーンよりも像側に拡大ミラーが1つまたは2つ配置され、これらによって透過型スクリーンに形成された中間像が所定の倍率で拡大されるようになっている。ここで、拡大ミラーの大きさや設置枚数は装置の大きさに制約されるため、特許文献1、2に記載の構成のように1~2枚の拡大ミラーによって所望の投影光学倍率を実現する場合には、それぞれのミラーにおける拡大率を高くする必要が生ずる。このため、ミラーにおける光学収差が大きくなりやすいことから、表示画像の視認性が低下してしまうという問題があった。
 また、特許文献1、2において、透過型スクリーンとしてマイクロレンズアレイやディフューザを用いている。このような光学素子を用いた場合、光の発散角が大きくなるために観察者の観察角度を大きく取ることができるが、空間的な規則性が発生してしまうことから、レーザ光に起因するスペックルノイズが発生する可能性があるなど、表示画像の視認性が低下してしまうという問題があった。
 そこで本発明は、光学収差およびスペックルノイズを抑制しながら、中間画像を所定の倍率で拡大することが可能な投影光学系及び画像投影装置を提供することを目的とする。
 上記課題を解決するために、本発明の画像投影装置は、レーザ光を射出する光源と、光源から射出されるレーザ光に基づいて所定の中間像を形成する像形成光学系と、中間像を所定の倍率に拡大しつつ、被投影面に導く投影光学系とを有し、投影光学系は、中間像に含まれるスペックルノイズを低減させる第1光学素子と、入射光を発散させ、所定の発散角を有する発散光として射出させる第2光学素子と、中間像を拡大する第1拡大光学系と、第1拡大光学系で拡大された像をさらに拡大する第2拡大光学系とを備えることを特徴としている。
 拡大光学系を第1拡大光学系と第2拡大光学系の2つに分けることにより、光学倍率をそれぞれに分担させることができるため、それぞれの拡大光学系における光学収差を抑えることが可能となり、これによって、高精細な表示画像をより大きく、かつ、より遠くに投影させることが可能となる。
 さらに、スペックルノイズの低減と発散光の生成を、第1光学素子と第2光学素子のそれぞれで行うようにしたため、空間的な規則性を低減させてスペックルノイズを低減させることできるとともに、所望の発散角の光を効率的に得ることができる。
 また、従来の装置においては、スペックルノイズ低減のために透過型スクリーンを変位等させることがあったが、本発明では、第1光学素子によってスペックルノイズを低減できることから、透過型スクリーンの変位等の動作や制御が不要となるため、変位等のための駆動装置や制御装置が不要となる。
 本発明の画像投影装置において、像形成光学系側から順に、第1光学素子、第1拡大光学系、第2光学素子、及び、第2拡大光学系が配置されていることが好ましい。
 第1拡大光学系よりも物体側に第1光学素子を配置したことにより、第1光学素子のサイズを小さく抑えることができるため、部品単価の低減を図ることができる。さらに、第1光学素子を第1拡大光学系と第2光学素子の間に配置した場合、第1光学素子からの散乱光も入射させるためには、第2光学素子のサイズを大きくする必要があり、また、第1光学素子における光の散乱が第2光学素子における発散光束の生成に影響を及ぼすおそれがあるが、第1光学素子を第1拡大光学系よりも物体側に配置した場合はこのような影響を抑えることができる。
 本発明の画像投影装置において、第1拡大光学系は、正の屈折力を有するレンズであって、レンズの前側焦点位置に第1光学素子が配置され、後側焦点位置に第2光学素子が配置されていることが好ましい。
 このような配置により、第2光学素子上に高精細の画像を形成することができる。
 本発明の画像投影装置において、第2拡大光学系は、入射光を反射するミラーであることが好ましい。
 本発明の画像投影装置において、第1光学素子は、平行平面板の少なくとも一方の平面に、平面に直交する方向に突出する複数の凸部が形成され、複数の凸部の突出量の分布は不規則に設定されているランダム位相差板であることが好ましい。
 これにより、第1光学素子を透過する際の光強度の低下や入射光の散乱による損失を抑えることができ、このため、視認性が高く、品質の高い最終画像を得ることができる。
 本発明の画像投影装置において、第2光学素子は、複数の微小レンズが規則的に配列されたマイクロレンズアレイであることが好ましい。
 これにより、第2光学素子を透過する際の光強度の低下や入射光の散乱による損失を抑えることができ、これによって視認性が高く、品質の高い最終画像を得ることができる。
 本発明の画像投影装置において、像形成光学系は、光源からの出射光に対して位相変調を施して位相変調光を生成する位相変調素子と、位相変調光をフーリエ変換するフーリエ変換光学系と、を有することが好ましい。
 これにより、第1光学素子上に、中間像として、ホログラム画像を形成することができる。
 本発明の投影光学系は、レーザ光に基づいて形成された中間像を所定の倍率に拡大しつつ、被投影面に導く投影光学系であって、中間像に含まれるスペックルノイズを低減させる第1光学素子と、入射光を発散させ、所定の発散角を有する発散光として射出させる第2光学素子と、中間像を拡大する第1拡大光学系と、第1拡大光学系で拡大された像をさらに拡大する第2拡大光学系とを備えることを特徴としている。
 これにより、光学収差およびスペックルノイズを抑制しながら、中間画像を所定の倍率で拡大して高精細の画像を投影することができる。
 本発明によると、光学収差およびスペックルノイズを抑制しつつ、中間画像を所定の倍率で拡大することにより、高精細な画像をより遠くに投影することが可能な、投影光学系及び画像投影装置を実現することができる。
本発明の実施形態に係る画像投影装置の構成を示す平面図である。 図1に示す画像投影装置の構成を示すブロック図である。
 以下、本発明の実施形態に係る投影光学系及び画像投影装置について図面を参照しつつ詳しく説明する。本実施形態の画像投影装置10は、本発明の画像投影装置をヘッドアップディスプレイ装置に適用した場合の例である。ここで、図1は本実施形態に係る画像投影装置10の構成を示す平面図である。図2は、図1に示す画像投影装置10の構成を示すブロック図である。
 画像投影装置10は、図1又は図2に示すように、レーザ光源20と、レーザドライバ21と、コリメータレンズ22と、LCOS30と、LCOSドライバ31と、FTレンズ32と、ランダム位相差板41と、投影レンズ42と、マイクロレンズアレイ43と、投影ミラー44と、制御部70と、メモリ71とを備える。図1に示すように、FTレンズ32、ランダム位相差板41、投影レンズ42、及び、マイクロレンズアレイ43は、LCOS30側から投影ミラー44側へこの順序で配置されており、それぞれの光軸がX軸方向(図1)に沿うように、互いに重なっている。
 レーザ光源20は、可視領域の波長のレーザ光を出射する光源であって、レーザドライバ21から供給される電流量に応じた強度の光を出射する。レーザドライバ21から供給される電流量は制御部70によって制御される。レーザ光源20から射出されたレーザ光I1はコリメータレンズ22によって平行光束I2に変換されて、LCOS30に入射する。
 LCOS30は、反射型LCOS(Liquid Crystal On Silicon)であって、液晶層とアルミニウムなどの電極層とを有するパネルである。LCOS30は、液晶層に電界を与える電極が規則的に並んで複数のピクセルが構成されている。LCOS30においては、位相変調素子として、それぞれの電極に与えられる電界強度の変化により、液晶層内の結晶の層の厚さ方向への倒れ角度が変化し、反射するレーザ光はピクセル毎に位相が変調させられる。このようなピクセル毎の位相の変化は、LCOSドライバ31によって制御される。LCOSドライバ31には、予めメモリ71に格納された画像データを読み出した制御部70から、画像データに対応する指示信号が送出され、この指示信号にしたがって、LCOSドライバ31は、LCOS30のピクセル毎に位相を制御し、これにより所定の位相変調光I3が生成される。
 LCOS30で生成された位相変調光I3は、フーリエ変換光学系としてのFTレンズ32に入射する。このFTレンズ32は、例えば両凸正レンズであって、フーリエ変換レンズとして入射光をフーリエ変換するとともに、入射光を集光することによりイメージ光I4を生成する。このイメージ光I4は、中間像(ホログラム画像)としてランダム位相差板41上に結像する。
 なお、位相変調光I3のフーリエ変換が可能であれば、FTレンズ32に代えて、別の形状の正の屈折力のレンズや、複数枚のレンズからなる正の屈折力の光学系を用いても良い。また、位相変調が可能であれば、LCOS30に代えて、透過型LCOS、その他の変調素子を用いても良い。
 以上述べた、コリメータレンズ22、LCOS30、及びFTレンズ32は、レーザ光源20から射出されるレーザ光に基づいて所定の中間像を形成する像形成光学系を構成する。
 ランダム位相差板41は、平行平面板状をなしており、例えば樹脂の成形によって形成される。ランダム位相差板41は、互いに対向する2平面(入射面41aと射出面41b)のうちの少なくとも一方の平面に複数の凸部(レンズレット)が形成されている。これらの凸部は、前記平面に直交する方向(X方向)に突出しており、その凸部の突出量の分布が不規則になるように配置されている。凸部の突出量としては、例えば、ランダム位相差板41へ入射する波長λの光に対して、位相のずれが0(ゼロ)、λ/4、2λ/4、3λ/4となる4種の光が各凸部でそれぞれ生成されるように、4種類の突出量が設定される。また、それぞれの凸部が前記平面上で占める面積は、ランダム位相差板41上に結像する中間像の画素と同程度又はそれ以下であり、例えば画素の1/2~1/10であることが好ましい。このような構成により、ランダム位相差板41は、第1光学素子として、透過光の位相の空間的規則性を乱すことが可能となるため、FTレンズ32によって生成された中間像に含まれるスペックルノイズを低減させたイメージ光I5を投影レンズ42側へ射出することが可能となる。
 なお、透過光に位相差を与えることができれば、ランダム位相差板41を、上記以外の構成としてもよい。例えば、前記平面の一部に等方性の透明薄膜を形成した構成や、複屈折板を用いることができる。
 投影レンズ42は、例えば両凸正レンズであって、ガラス、プラスチックその他の透明材料によって構成し、第1拡大光学系として所定の倍率で中間像を拡大する。投影レンズ42から射出されたイメージ光I6は、マイクロレンズアレイ43に入射する。
 ここで、ランダム位相差板41は投影レンズ42の前側焦点位置(LCOS30側の焦点位置)に配置され、マイクロレンズアレイ43は、投影レンズ42の後側焦点位置(像側焦点位置)に配置されている。これにより、ランダム位相差板41上に形成された中間像の拡大像がマイクロレンズアレイ43上に結像する。なお、投影レンズ42に代えて、別の形状の正の屈折力のレンズや、複数枚のレンズからなる正の屈折力の光学系を用いても良い。
 マイクロレンズアレイ43は、例えば樹脂の成形によって形成し、入射面43aにおいて複数の微小レンズが規則的に配列された構成を備える。マイクロレンズアレイ43は、第2光学素子として、それぞれの微小レンズが入射光I6を発散させ、これにより所定の発散角を有する発散光束I7が射出される。
 マイクロレンズアレイ43から射出された発散光束I7は、投影ミラー44に入射する。投影ミラー44の反射面44aは凹面鏡(拡大鏡)であって、発散光束I7は、投影ミラー44で拡大・反射される。すなわち、投影ミラー44は、第2拡大光学系として、投影レンズ42で拡大された像をさらに拡大する。投影ミラー44からの反射光は、車両のウインドシールド45の表示領域に投影される。この表示領域は半反射面として機能するため、入射したイメージ光は、運転者に向けて反射されるとともに、ウインドシールド45の前方に虚像が形成される。ウインドシールド45の前方の虚像を目視することで、運転者の目Eには、ステアリングホイールの上方の前方の所定位置P1に各種の情報が表示されているように見える。なお、第2拡大光学系は、装置のサイズや構成、収差等を考慮した上で、複数枚数の投影ミラーで構成してもよい。
 以上述べた、ランダム位相差板41、投影レンズ42、マイクロレンズアレイ43、及び投影ミラー44は、ランダム位相差板41に結像する中間像を所定の倍率に拡大しつつ、被投影面に導く投影光学系を構成する。
 以上のように構成されたことから、上記実施形態によれば、次の効果を奏する。
(1)投影光学系において、拡大光学系を投影レンズ42と投影ミラー44の2つに分けることにより、光学倍率をこれらに分担させることができるため、倍率の増大にともなって増加する光学収差、特に歪曲収差、色収差、輝度収差を抑えることが可能となる。したがって、高精細な表示画像を、より大きく、かつ、より遠くに投影させることが可能となる。
(2)従来の透過型スクリーンに代えて、ランダム位相差板41とマイクロレンズアレイ43の2つを設け、ランダム位相差板41では、レーザ光に起因するスペックルノイズを低減させ、マイクロレンズアレイ43では、所定の発散角を有する発散光を生成させている。この構成においては、ランダム位相差板41を透過させることによって空間的な規則性を低減させてスペックルノイズを低減させることできるとともに、マイクロレンズアレイ43を透過させることによって所望の発散角の光を効率的に得られる。さらに、透過率の高い、ランダム位相差板41とマイクロレンズアレイ43を用いることにより、ディフューザを用いた場合よりも、光強度の低下や入射光の散乱による損失を抑えることができ、これによって視認性が高く、品質の高い最終画像を得ることができる。また、従来の装置においては、スペックルノイズ低減のために透過型スクリーンを変位等させることがあったが、本実施形態の構成においてはそのような動作や制御が不要であるため、変位等のための駆動装置や制御装置が不要となる。
(3)ランダム位相差板41を投影レンズ42に対して物体側(LCOS30側)に配置しているため、像側に配置した場合に対してランダム位相差板41のサイズを小さく抑えることができることから部品単価の低減を図ることができる。さらに、ランダム位相差板41を投影レンズ42とマイクロレンズアレイ43の間に配置した場合、ランダム位相差板41からの散乱光も入射させるためにはマイクロレンズアレイ43のサイズを大きくする必要があり、また、ランダム位相差板41における光の散乱がマイクロレンズアレイ43における発散光束の生成に影響を及ぼすおそれがあるが、ランダム位相差板41を投影レンズ42よりも物体側に配置した場合はこのような影響を抑えることができる。
 以下に変形例について説明する。
 上述の実施形態においては、コリメータレンズ22、LCOS30、及びFTレンズ32によって、中間像を形成するための像形成光学系を構成していたが、これに代えて、レーザ光源20からの光を走査する走査手段を設け、この走査手段からの走査光によってランダム位相差板41上に中間像を形成する構成も可能である。
 本発明について上記実施形態を参照しつつ説明したが、本発明は上記実施形態に限定されるものではなく、改良の目的または本発明の思想の範囲内において改良または変更が可能である。
 以上のように、本発明に係る投影光学系及びこれを有する画像投影装置は、車両用のヘッドアップディスプレイ装置に有用であり、高精細でサイズの大きな画像を表示することに適している。

Claims (8)

  1.  レーザ光を射出する光源と、
     前記光源から射出されるレーザ光に基づいて所定の中間像を形成する像形成光学系と、
     前記中間像を所定の倍率に拡大しつつ、被投影面に導く投影光学系とを有し、
     前記投影光学系は、
     前記中間像に含まれるスペックルノイズを低減させる第1光学素子と、
     入射光を発散させ、所定の発散角を有する発散光として射出させる第2光学素子と、
     前記中間像を拡大する第1拡大光学系と、
     前記第1拡大光学系で拡大された像をさらに拡大する第2拡大光学系と
    を備えることを特徴とする画像投影装置。
  2.  前記像形成光学系側から順に、前記第1光学素子、前記第1拡大光学系、前記第2光学素子、及び、前記第2拡大光学系が配置されている
    ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の画像投影装置。
  3.  前記第1拡大光学系は、正の屈折力を有するレンズであって、前記レンズの前側焦点位置に前記第1光学素子が配置され、後側焦点位置に前記第2光学素子が配置されている
    ことを特徴とする請求項1又は請求項2に記載の画像投影装置。
  4.  前記第2拡大光学系は、入射光を反射するミラーである
    ことを特徴とする請求項1から請求項3のいずれか1項に記載の画像投影装置。
  5.  前記第1光学素子は、平行平面板の少なくとも一方の平面に、前記平面に直交する方向に突出する複数の凸部が形成され、前記複数の凸部の突出量の分布は不規則に設定されているランダム位相差板である
    ことを特徴とする請求項1から請求項4のいずれか1項に記載の画像投影装置。
  6.  前記第2光学素子は、複数の微小レンズが規則的に配列されたマイクロレンズアレイである
    ことを特徴とする請求項1から請求項5のいずれか1項に記載の画像投影装置。
  7.  前記像形成光学系は、
     前記光源からの出射光に対して位相変調を施して位相変調光を生成する位相変調素子と、
     前記位相変調光をフーリエ変換するフーリエ変換光学系と、
    を有する
    ことを特徴とする請求項1から請求項6のいずれか1項に記載の画像投影装置。
  8.  レーザ光に基づいて形成された中間像を所定の倍率に拡大しつつ、被投影面に導く投影光学系であって、
     前記投影光学系は、
     前記中間像に含まれるスペックルノイズを低減させる第1光学素子と、
     入射光を発散させ、所定の発散角を有する発散光として射出させる第2光学素子と、
     前記中間像を拡大する第1拡大光学系と、
     前記第1拡大光学系で拡大された像をさらに拡大する第2拡大光学系と
    を備えることを特徴とする投影光学系。
