Description

MOBILE PROTECTION UNIT FOR PROTECTING A RAILWAY TRACK SECTION FROM TRAINS ENTERING AND LEAVING THE RAILWAY TRACK SECTION
DESCRIPTION:
Field of the invention
The invention relates to a mobile protection unit for protecting a railway track section from trains entering and leaving the railway track section. A railway track section is understood to be a working area having track sections of one or more railways where temporarily work is being carried out.
During work in progress on the rails it should be avoided that trains that have a different destination from the railway track section drive through the railway track section where work is being carried out. At the same time it should be avoided that work trains being operative in the railway track section concerned leave the railway track section and end up on the rails where high-speed trains operate according to the timetable.
State of the art
Train protection systems ATPs (Automatic Train Protection systems) are known, such as, for example, the ATB EG system, which comprise a transmitter utilizing the rails as a transmitting means and which are controlled in accordance with the signaling. This transmitter transmits a warning signal that indicates the allowed maximum speed of the train. This signal is continuously picked up by detection coils present in the train. If the train goes at too high a speed, a detection-coil-coupled control unit forces the train to slow down. The lowest speed guarded by this train protection system is referred to as the release speed, which in the case of an ATB EG system is 40 km/h. At lower speeds the system is designed such that the ATB EG system does not take action.
In addition, train protection systems (ATPs) are known (such as, for example the ATBvv (ATBimproved version) and ERTMS), which also comprise a transmitter which is present alongside a rail or between rails and which do cause trains going below the release speed to stop. The transmitter of suchlike train protection systems is fixedly mounted (on or to the firm mass) and, in consequence, not suitable for safeguarding a temporary working area.
Summary of the invention
It is an object of the invention to provide a mobile protection unit of the type defined in the opening paragraph which provides more protection than the known protection units. For this purpose, the mobile protection unit according to the invention is characterized in that the protection unit comprises a transmitter for transmitting a protection signal which can be detected by a train's signal detection means situated above the track, as well as a control unit for transmitting the protection signal to the transmitter. By means of the protection unit according to the invention it is avoided that a work train going at a speed lower than the release speed can leave the working area and that a train running according to the timetable can enter the working area.
The transmitter may be a beacon beside a rail or a balise situated midway between two rails. The protection signal may be a stop signal or an authorization signal for limited passage, for example, permission to drive on for x meters or turn off at the next railway point. The signal detection means may be detection coils present in the train or an antenna present above the track (above rails or above the middle of the two rails). The trains are preferably to be arranged or adapted such that a protection signal cannot be ignored. The protection signal preferably overrides other signals (such as for example the ATB EG signal) by, for example, suppressing them.
It should be observed that in the case of some ATPs it is not prevented that a work train can leave the working area at low speed and a train can enter the working area, because possible ATP signals may be ignored or because (in the event of various ATPs on the same track, for example in the event of ATB EG and ATBvv) the wrong signal is reacted to. The protection unit according to the invention provides that any possible other available ATP signals are ignored or interfered and the signal from the protection unit is reacted to.
The protection unit according to the invention fulfills the need to protect the working area from the start and after termination of the activities in a rapid, simple and reliable manner from the trains entering and leaving the working area. As a result, less preparation time and clearance time is needed, so that the period of time during which the working area can be closed off for time table operation can be better used for executing the actual activities. An embodiment of the mobile protection unit according to the invention is characterized in that the protection unit comprises shielding means for shielding the transmitter, as well as a further transmitter which is mounted on top of or close to the shielded transmitter. This embodiment is particularly suitable if the track is provided with balises (transmitters situated midway between the rails). These balises make contact with a train only at the moment the train passes them. The shielding means may be arranged, for example, as a Faraday cage.
A further embodiment of the mobile protection unit according to the invention is characterized in that the protection unit comprises a control unit for interfering a signal running through the rails or transmitted by the balise, which signal indicates that high speed is allowed. With this embodiment of the protection unit according to the invention it is avoided that a train can approach the railway track section at high speed, so that a train threatening to enter the working area can always be stopped in time.
In yet a further embodiment the interfering means comprise an interfering transmitter which can transmit an interference signal to the rails or balise, so that said signal transmitted by the balise can also no longer be recognized or detected by the signal detection means in the train.
Again a further embodiment of the mobile protection unit according to the invention is characterized in that the protection unit further includes an electrical conductor which can be brought into contact by means of its ends with the two rails of the track. This electrical conductor forms a shunt bar which electrically connects to the two rails of a track to each other for thus simulating the presence of a train, so that protection systems present in trains slow down the train when it approaches the shunt bar at high speed and cause a standstill of the train so as to avoid a collision.
The protection unit preferably comprises a switch for interrupting and shutting off the electrical conductor.
An advantageous embodiment of the mobile protection unit according to the invention is characterized in that the control unit comprises at least a single passive electronic component which is located between parts of the electrical conductor. By means of a passive electronic component the amplitude of the ATP signals that have to be ignored can be reduced, so that this signal can no longer be recognized or detected by the signal detection means present in the train. This passive electronic component may be arranged, for example, as a coil, but this passive electronic component is preferably arranged as a capacitor. To even further enhance protection, a further embodiment of the mobile protection unit according to the invention is characterized in that the control unit is equipped with stop means for transmitting a protection signal through the rails or transmitting the protection signal via the transmitter, which protection signal indicates that a stop is absolutely to be made.
The protection unit preferably comprises a remote control and the control unit comprises a receiver cooperating with the remote control for receiving and relaying operating signals received from the remote control. As a result of this, time can be saved when the protection unit is put into operation, so that even more working hours are left.
A still further embodiment of the mobile protection unit according to the invention is characterized in that the control unit comprises a signaling module which indicates whether the control unit is turned on and whether it functions properly. This directly shows whether the working area is well protected and no misunderstandings about this can arise.
Brief description of the drawings
The present invention will be described hereinafter with respect to examples of embodiment shown in the drawing figures of the mobile protection unit according to the invention, in which:
Fig. 1 gives a diagrammatic representation of a first embodiment of the protection unit according to the invention;
Fig. 2 gives a diagrammatic representation of a railway track section which is protected by the mobile protection unit represented in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 gives a diagrammatic representation of a second embodiment of the protection unit according to the invention.
Detailed description of the drawings Fig. 1 gives a diagrammatic representation of a first embodiment of the mobile protection unit according to the invention. This mobile protection unit 1 is intended for the protection of a railway track section to avoid trains entering and leaving the railway track section. The mobile protection unit has an electrical conductor 3 whose ends are brought into contact with the two rails 5 of a track 7, as well as a switch 9 for interrupting and shutting off the electrical conductor. By closing the switch the rails are connected to each other as they are also connected by wheels and a wheel shaft of a train. By doing this, the presence of a train can thus be simulated, which in its turn can be detected by other trains, and protection systems in these trains are activated which avoid a collision taking place.
The protection system further includes a transmitter 11 for transmitting a protection signal which can be detected by a train's signal detection means located above the track, as well as a control unit 13 for driving the transmitter 11 and closing the switch 9. To this end the control unit is provided with power electronics 15 and a battery 17.
The control unit 13 may be equipped with an interfering transmitter which can transit an interference signal to the rails for interfering a signal running through the rails and indicating than it is allowed to drive at high speed. Furthermore, the control unit may be equipped with stop means for sending a protection signal through the rails or via the transmitter 11, which protection signal indicates that a standstill is absolutely to be made.
The control unit 13 further includes a receiver 19 formed by a GSM module, so that this receiver can be remote-controlled by means of a remote control 21. The receiver is connected to a central logic unit 18. Further, the control unit 13 includes a signaling module 20 that indicates whether the control unit is turned on and whether it functions properly.
By way of illustration Fig. 2 shows a railway track section 23 which is protected by a plurality of protections units 1 described above from trains 25 entering the railway track section and work trains 27 leaving the railway track section.
Fig. 3 gives a diagrammatic representation of a second embodiment of the mobile protection unit 31 according to the invention. In this embodiment the transmitter 35 fitted midway between the rails 33 is a balise which is shielded by a Faraday cage 37 on which a further transmitter 39 belonging to the protection unit 31 is mounted. In lieu of mounting the further transmitter 39 on top of the transmitter 35, it may also be fitted close to the transmitter 35. When a train passes a balise, this balise transmits an authorisation signal which is detected by signal detection means located in the train. Shielding only the transmitter 35 will imply that the train would always stop because no authorisation signal is received by the train during the passing of the balise. For this reason, a further transmitter 39 is to be present which transmits a limited authorisation signal, for example authorisation to drive on for x meters or turn off at the next railway point. The signal detection means are formed by detection coils present in the train or an antenna situated above the middle of the track. Albeit the invention has been described in the foregoing with reference to the drawings, it should be pointed out that the invention is not by any manner or means restricted to the embodiments shown in the drawings. The invention also extends over any embodiments deviating from the embodiments shown in the drawings within the scope defined by the claims. For example, in lieu of providing an interference signal for interfering the signal running through the rails, which indicates that it is allowed to drive at high speed, the control unit may be provided with a capacitor which is located between the ends of the electrical conductor.
