Abstract
The invention refers to a new method for the installation of an external lifting keel, i.e. the design and installation of a mechanism for sailing boat lifting keels. The installation procedure consists of the positioning the frame of the keel with bolts on the external part of the hull so that the bolts on the frame are aligned with the bores in the hull; after that, mounting plates or supporting profiles are attached to these bolts and tightened with nuts.
Description
METHOD FOR EXTERNAL INSTALLATION OF A SAILING BOAT LIFTING KEEL
The subject of the invention is a completely new way of installing a lifting keel into the hull without - in contrast to a regular installation - rearranging the hull.
This invention resolves the technical difficulties with the design and installation of a lifting keel below the hull with an external installation, therefore there is ho need to rearrange the interior of the hull and the extra space can be used for on-board equipment.
A fixed keel is usually attached to the hull with bolts and glue. Screws installed through the base of the keel connect the keel to a reinforced point in the hull of the boat. The adhesive used is based on epoxy resins. The external connection between the keel and the hull is subsequently treated with putty that is based on epoxy resin. With a fixed keel, the depth of the draft is greater. Furthermore, the characteristics of the vessel cannot be changed. The dis- and reassembly of the keel is in practice a very difficult and time consuming process.
The lower part of a lifting keel is vertically shiftable with a ballast that allows the changing of the draft. This method also enables the lifting of the keel and thus the possibility of sailing in lower waters and changing the sailing characteristics. The shiftable part of the keel is inserted into a guided keel frame and the upper part is mounted on a hydraulic cylinder. The maximum and minimum travel range of the keel is secured with a locking pin.
There are lifting keels on the market that have an installation frame - a shell for attaching the keel to the hull - built into the hull interior, usually with a height of max. 120 cm. This housing strongly interferes with the interior space distribution of the boat, which is usually very limited, and the providers would much rather use the extra space for additional internal equipment and a more suitable distribution of space than have this space be occupied by elements that belong to external mechanisms.
The installation procedure according to the invention facilitates an easier dis- and reassembly of the lifting keel in contrast to other methods of installation and enables low-cost and easy maintenance of the lifting keel.
T e above mentioned technical problems are solved through external installation of the lifting keel according to the invention.
Figure 1: shows a lifting keel on a wooden base before the installation
The lifting keel (1) is made from a combination of standard and custom components. A high level of standardisation is required for the purpose of higher quality and efficient technical support anywhere in the world. The shape of the lifting keel (1) is designed in two parts: the frame (3) of the lifting keel (1) for attaching the keel to the hull and the flexible part (2) of the keel with weights.
The flexible part (2) with weights is installed on a guide made out of stainless steel and coated with a special material with good slip properties. The entire flexible part is moved by a hydraulic cylinder that ensures smooth and effortless control of the keel from the cockpit of the sailing boat.
The flexible part (2) of the lifting keel (1) is mounted to the frame (3) with four M30 diameter steel rods that are inserted through 120 x 120 x 4 mm special section tubes at the base of the frame (3).
On the entire upper part of frame (3), i.e. the part that is attached to the external part of the hull, the bolts (4) are foreseen, preferably fourteen M30 bolts. In the hull, the bores for the reception of the bolts (4) are provided at defined positions that need to be in line with the holes in the frame (3). After the installation of the frame (3) to the hull of the boat, the bolts (4) preferably shouldn't be higher than 140 mm above the mounting plate or supporting profiles for attaching the lifting keel (1) that are mounted on the outside of the hull.
The procedure for an external installation of a sailing boat lifting keel includes the following steps:
- making of holes for bolts (4) at defined positions in the hull;
- transportation of the lifting keel (1) under the boat in a special transport box that, whereby all sides except the base (5) are removed prior to positioning;
- positioning of the lifting keel (1) on the external side of the hull through the frame (3) of the lifting keel (1) with the help of the bolts (4). During this procedure, the whole lifting keel (1) is tilted 1°
backwards with the help of the base (5), so that the keel 1 can always be installed at an angle of 1° in relation to the water line;
- after the frame (3) has been correctly positioned on the boat hull through the corresponding openings in the hull, i.e. that the bolts (4) are aligned with the bores in the hull, the installation plates or supporting profiles are mounted on these bolts (4) on the external part of the hull with nuts;
- removal of the base (5) and installation of keel weights.
