Abstract

The method for the authentication of consumer goods consists in that digital informational prototypes of printing forms are created, at least one of which contains digital images of a transparent color masking pattern. A set of printing forms is produced, which includes at least one form for printing of said transparent color masking patterns. Each image of a trademark is applied to a light-reflecting support and said masking pattern is applied to each image of a trademark.

Description

METHOD FOR AUTHENTICATION OF CONSUMER GOODS
Techical field
The invention relates to technologies that enables each end buyer to authenticate consumer goods delivered to the market as single-piece goods or as small-sized sets (usually taken in one hand) in flexible packages.
Background of the invention
Conventionally, the authentication of products is carried out by enclosure of accompanying documents to the whole lot of goods, said documents containing information on at least the manufacturer's name, the kind of goods, the lot number and the number of articles therein.
Unfortunately, such documents are practically inaccessible for end buyers of individual articles, which they buy at retail.
For the authentication of various goods stickers or labels are used with specifying the kind and the name of goods, as well as information about the manufacturer.
However, production and attachment of stickers or labels is connected with substantial expenses of materials, finances and is time-consuming, therefore, is reasonable only in cases, where the proportion of such expenses in the price is minor. It would be obvious even for a non-specialist that in retail trade with the aforementioned consumer goods the use of such stickers and labels is practically excluded.
It is also impractical for economical, as well as organizational and technical perspectives to authenticate such goods with the following exotic and labor- intensive means: 9 - ferromagnetic check marks to be applied to goods and their package (document RU 2276409), or protective marks formed from encoding multicolor compositions with active components of intersecting hatches (document RU 2254354);
- unique "digital stamps" or "serialization codes" programmably formed in ascending order and applied to goods or their package (documents RU 2225032 or RU 2216776);
- encrypted and digitally signed unique alphanumeric identifiers according to document US 201 1/00931 13 Al ;
- radio-frequency tags embedded in stickers or package of goods, i.e. microchips, each having a transponder with a built-in antenna and being a medium for the unique identifier (document EA 01 1785).
In all such cases the authentication is carried out by comparison of an identifier received from a remote database with the identifier applied to an article or a package. Of course, there is no sense in creation of such databases for candies, chewing gums and other similar small piece mass products. For excise goods, individual two-dimensional (2D) bar codes are often formed and print on bottle stickers and cigarette blocks and boxes ("TexHHHecKHe

However, use of such bar codes for the authentication of the above mentioned consumer goods is practically excluded.
Finally, for such consumer goods, the use of control holograms to be individually produced and subsequently applied to each article or its package prior to delivery to distribution network is also practically excluded
(http ://drukarstvo . com/druk-holohram) . Therefore, authenticity of consumer goods is still confirmed only by applying a manufacturing company trademark to each individual flexible package. Any conventional printing method can be used for this purpose (see article

This closest prior art of the method proposed below provides for:
- manufacture of at least one master print as an analog informational prototype of a printing form, - manufacture of at least one printing form with a mirror image of the image and/or text to be printed (in particular, trademark),
- fixation of a printing form (usually a set of printing forms in the order of application of paint layers) in the rotary printing machine, and
- in-line printing of the selected image and/or text on a roll-fed information carrier (in particular, on flexible packaging material).
In case of black-and-white print it may be sometimes sufficient to produce one printing form, while for color print a set of printing forms, the number of which equals to the number of the colors used, are produced and secured in succession on rollers of a printing machine. It is obvious that a printing form used for producing prints of a trademark containing the number of its mirror images, which is equal to the number of flexible packages covered with the printed images for one revolution of the corresponding roller of the rotary printing machine.
The described method provides for efficient replication of any trademark on each such blank of a flexible package for consumer goods, which constitute a part of a long-length web of flexible packaging material.
However, flexible packaging materials and flexible packages fabricated therefrom are used not only by legal holders of trademarks but also by manufacturers of counterfeit consumer goods. Therefore, the task of creation of highly productive and economical methods for the authentication of consumer goods still remains critical.
Definition of the terms
The terms used hereinafter have the following meanings: "consumer goods" stands for the following products (predominantly food):
- confectioneries, such as individual candies, cookies, souvenir gingerbread, etc.,
- single portions of instant coffee, sugar, milk (including condensed milk), cream and other dairy products, fruit and vegetable juices, etc.,
- sugar candies, chewing gum, refreshing tablets, vitamin tablets, etc.; - tea, coffee, cocoa, yerba mate, nuts, seeds, factory fabricated popcorn, medicinal herbs, etc.;
"flexible packaging" stands for wrapping and predominantly sealed single- and multichamber bags fabricated from flexible packaging materials;
"flexible packaging material" stands for at least two-layered rolled material on the basis of polymeric film, metallized polymeric film, laminated paper, metal foil, and arbitrary combinations thereof, which represents a set of blanks for flexible packages and is delivered in such form to manufacturers of consumer goods.
Disclosure of the invention
The invention is based on the task of creation of a method for the
authentication of consumer goods by changing the order of manufacture and use of printing forms, said method would provide at the final stage of manufacture of flexible packaging materials highly productive in-line application of trademarks and pseudoholograms to all blanks of flexible packages in confirmation of legality of their use. The task is solved by the method of the authentication of consumer goods, the method including: - creation of informational prototypes of printing forms, at least one of which defines an image of a trademark,
- manufacture of a set of such printing forms for the rotary printing machine, at least one of said printing forms containing a mirror image of a trademark, in the number that equals to the number of flexible packages to be covered by images for one revolution of the corresponding roller of a printing machine,
- successive fixation of printing forms on rollers of said machine in the order of application of paint layers, and
- in-line printing of images of the selected trademark on a roll-fed flexible packaging material, - according to the invention,
- digital informational prototypes of printing forms are created, at least one of which contains digital images of a transparent color masking pattern,
- a set of printing forms is produced, which includes at least one form for printing of said transparent color masking patterns, - each image of a trademark is applied to a light-reflecting support, and
- said masking pattern is applied to each image of a trademark.
Masking patterns can be designed with the use of generally available software (for example, Photoshop®). In finished state they represent
semitransparent pseudoholograms that enable to discern trademarks protected by them only at bright lighting under certain angles of view. Variety of such
pseudoholograms is practically infinite, which makes it possible to respond to attempts of their forgery in due time. Inasmuch as forming and printing
pseudoholograms is included in the in-line printing process, as the use thereof has substantially no effect on productivity and production cost of flexible packaging materials.
The first additional distinction is that material selected from the group consisting of metal foil, metallized polymeric film and printing inks "Mirror Gold" and "Mirror Silver" is used as a light-reflecting support. Such materials are generally available.
The second additional distinction is that the transparent color masking pattern is formed of at least two inks of different colors. It makes protection of trademarks with pseudoholograms more efficient. Brief description of drawings
The essence of the invention is disclosed below by the detailed description of the provided method with reference to accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of the web of flexible packaging material, which corresponds to one flexible packaging with a trademark and
pseudoholographic color masking pattern applied thereto (in substantially enlarged scale; variant with the use of a solid metal or metallized coating of a flexible packaging material as a light-reflecting support);
Figure 2 is the same as Figure 1 (with the use of separately applied mirror undercoating as a light-reflecting support); Figures 3 and 4 are real illustrations of the authentication of consumer goods with protective pseudoholograms.
The preferred embodiments of the invention
Irrespective of specific technical means of embodiment, the proposed method for the authentication of goods provides for:
(1) creation of a set of digital informational prototypes of printing forms, which optionally includes at least one digital image of a trademark to be protected and at least one digital image of a transparent color masking pattern;
(2) manufacture of a set of such printing forms for the rotary printing machine, at least one of which contains mirror images of a trademark in the number that equals to the number of flexible packages to be covered by images for one revolution of the corresponding roller of a printing machine, and at least one form contains the corresponding number of images of transparent color masking patterns; (3) successive fixation of printing forms on rollers of said machine in the order of application of paint layers;
(4) in-line printing of the selected trademark on a roll-fed flexible packaging material having, at least in areas where images of trademarks are located, a light- reflecting support; and (5) application of said transparent masking pattern on each image of a trademark.
The method may be implemented on rotary machines for gravure printing or flexographic printing.
Figures 1 and 2 show: - at least two-layered flexible packaging material 1 , wherein the lower part serves as an inner layer of flexible packages, which is inert in respect of the packaged products, and the upper part acts as a carrier of information on the product, its manufacturer, shelf life, etc.; a light-reflecting support 2, which may represent: - a solid upper layer of flexible packaging material 1 , as shown in Figure 1 , either made of metal (usually aluminium) foil or metallized,
- or a spot of glazing printing ink, such as "Mirror Gold" or "Mirror Silver", as shown in Figure 2; a layer 3 of white paint to be applied on the top of flexible packaging material 1 , and having windows for printing of two below described elements, an image 4 of the trademark and a transparent color masking pattern 5 applied thereto, which serves as a protective pseudohologram and is formed by at least one ink, preferably by at least two inks of different colors applied in succession.
Each layer of the pattern 5 represents a plurality of irregularly distributed points ("noise"), coordinates of each being determined by certain easily changeable algorithm. In practice, to form the patterns 5 it is reasonable to use standard printing inks of four basic colors: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black, that can be taken in arbitrary combinations and arbitrary sequences.
It would be obvious for a person skilled in the art that in order to facilitate understanding of the inventive concept, both drawings in Figures 1 and 2 are presented with enlargement and scale distortion, and the printed image 4 of trademarks and applied patterns 5 do not create any tangible or naked-eyed relief on the surface of flexible packaging material 1.
It is apparent from Figures 3 and 4 how consumers can discern trademarks of legal holders under protective pseudoholograms and verify the authenticity of purchased consumer goods.

Claims

1. A method for authentication of consumer goods, which includes: creation of informational prototypes of printing forms, at least one of which defines an image of a trademark, manufacture of a set of such printing forms for the rotary printing machine, at least one of said printing forms containing a mirror image of a trademark, in the number that equals to the number of flexible packages to be covered by images for one revolution of the corresponding roller of a printing machine, successive fixation of printing forms on rollers of said machine in the order of application of paint layers, and in-line printing of images of the selected trademark on a roll-fed flexible packaging material, characterized in that the digital informational prototypes of printing forms are created, at least one of which contains the digital images of a transparent color masking pattern, a set of printing forms is produced, which includes at least one form for printing of said transparent color masking patterns, each image of a trademark is applied to a light-reflecting support, and said masking pattern is applied to each image of a trademark.
2. The method according to claim 1, characterized in that material is selected from a group consisting of metal foil, metallized polymeric film and printing inks "Mirror Gold" and "Mirror Silver" is used as a light-reflecting support.
3. The method according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the transparent color masking pattern is formed of at least two inks of different colors.
