Definitions

  • This invention relates to a novel formulation for a yield enhancing crop spray treatment finding particular application in the treatment of maize.
  • Glyphosate is well-known as a broad spectrum systemic herbicide particularly effective against annual broadleaf weeds and grasses which compete with commercial crops such as maize. It is absorbed through foliage and translocated to other growth points in the plant and acts by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme involved in the synthesis of aromatic amino acids including tyrosine, tryptophan and phenylanaline. Accordingly, glyphosate is not effective as a pre-emergence herbicide and is only effective on actively growing plants.
  • glyphosate can stress and adversely affect the growth of the crops it seeks to protect from weeds. This prompted the development of genetically-engineered glyphosate-resistant crops (often sold as ROUND-UP READYTM).
  • weeds are increasingly developing resistance to glyphosate and the applicant sought to attempt to alleviate this by making use of glyphosate in combination with other herbicides to increase the efficacy.
  • the applicant sought to counter the adverse effects of glyphosate and partner herbicides on the yield of the crop.
  • a crop treatment composition comprises a mixture of a herbicide and a plant growth stimulant.
  • the herbicide is a post-emergance herbicide and in particular, glyphosate.
  • the plant growth stimulant is of the type formulated to enhance vegetative development and / or stimulate the formation of root hair, particularly during the vegetative growth phase of a crop.
  • the plant growth stimulant optimizes root development of crops resulting in an increased absorption of nutritional elements.
  • the glyphosate is combined with the plant growth stimulant for use in post-emergence situations, and in particular a foliar applied nutritional product for use in post- emergance situations.
  • a foliar applied nutritional product for use in post- emergance situations.
  • TURBOMAIZETM is a product for use in post- emergance situations.
  • the crop treatment composition of the invention may be used with maize and in particular, glyphosate tolerant maize varieties.
  • a pre-emergence herbicide is combined with a plant growth stimulant formulated to stimulate root growth during the first crucial weeks following transplanting - i.e. in the vegetative growth phase.
  • the pre-emergance herbicide is combined with the plant growth stimulant PLANTSTARTTM.
  • the crop treatment composition may be used with maize, drybeans, soyabeans, sunflower and wheat.
  • a nutritional composition is added to the combination of pre-emergence herbicide and the plant growth stimulant.
  • the addition of the nutritional component to a tank mix of pre-emergence herbicide and a plant growth stimulant is convenient and enables the farmer to reduce the number of sprays carried out.
  • One of the advantages of the crop spray treatment of the invention, other than improved efficacy of the glyphosate (i.e. improved crop protection by improved weed control) and enhanced crop growth (yield) is the cost saving occasioned by being able to carry out a single spray treatment, rather than separate sprays for both crop protection and growth enhancement/ yield improvement.
  • Example 1 glyphosate and TURBOMAIZETM
  • Trials were carried out in which the applicant's plant growth stimulant TURBOMAIZETM was mixed with a tank mix of glyphosate such that in most cases 31/ ha of TURBOMAIZETM and in another case 4i/ha of TURBOMAIZETM and the corresponding recommended volume of glyphosate tank mix were applied to 6ha blocks in maize fields. Three reps were harvested in the treated areas and 1 rep of the untreated area on each side of the treated area. An average yield for the treated and untreated areas was then calculated.
  • Ammonium sulfate in the recommended concentration for the particular maize fields (as recommended by the chemical agent).
  • Sprayfilm 10 was used as a sticker/ wetting agent.
  • control crop was sprayed with glyphosate containing no MAXFOLIAR.
  • the trial indicates an increase in yield of soybeans with the application of glyphosate and a plant growth stimulant, MAXFOLIARTM.
  • PLANTSTARTTM was used with different pre-emergence spray programs on maize, dry beans and soy beans and applied as a broadcast spray. No PLANTSTARTTM was included in the spray for the control.
  • the results generally show an increased yield with the addition of PLANTSTARTTM to a spray containing a pre-emergence herbicicde.
