Definitions
- the present invention relates to a laundry washing/drying machine effecting washing and/or drying of the laundry placed in a drum.
- the present invention more particularly relates to a noise insulation element which can be attached as an intermediate wall insulation element effective in enhancing noise insulation.
- a laundry washing/drying machine comprises a generally six-sided cabinet with a front side door by which one can put in a laundry to be washed and/or dried.
- the drum being rotatably disposed can be hence accessed through the front access opening.
- a washing machine comprises a drum rotatable such that water and detergent held in a lower part of the tub is used to perform washing of the laundry whereby dirt and filth attached to the laundry is removed as a result of mechanical interaction of cloth items with each other and with the drum surfaces.
- an electric motor rotates the drum by means of a driving pulley so that forward and reverse rotation of the drum is effected during the washing and/or drying cycles.
- Noise insulation elements being typically attached to the inner wall surfaces of the chassis provides that vibrations and related non-negligible audible noise due to high-speed motor operation is eliminated. Such an arrangement typically maintains operational noise within predetermined limits and provides an enhanced operational noise profile at levels which cause minimal or no disturbance to the user.
- a prior art publication in the technical field of the present invention may be referred to as EP2192222 among others, the document disclosing a layer in the form of a noise-insulating layer made of statistic copolymer with saturated polymer structures e.g. M-group rubber such as ethylene propylene diene Monomer.
- the noise-insulating layer has a thickness (d2) of 0.75 mm, and is arranged on a heat-insulating carrier layer.
- the carrier layer has higher resilience than the noise-insulating layer, and is comprised of polyethylene and/or polyurethane or foam.
- the carrier layer has a thickness (d1) of 1mm, and is arranged on an adhesive layer.
- the present invention provides a noise suppression structure, which allows generation of a reduced operational noise by means of noise insulation elements effective in suppressing resonant motion and dissipating vibrational energy so that its radiation is prevented, therefore significantly contributing in reducing the overall noise being generated by the laundry washing/drying machine.
- the present invention more particularly proposes noise insulation element attachment means effective in joining the elements to the inner walls of the machine without requiring application of adhesives. Elimination of solvent-based adhesives effective in bonding rubber materials with metal surfaces is particularly advantageous in that no associated fire accelerating effects will be a point of concern and a healthier working environment will be ensured. Cost advantage of the proposed system without the costly adhesive layer should also be noted in a mass-produced article such as a laundry washing/drying machine.
- the present invention provides an improved adhesive-free noise insulation element being attachable to the laundry washing/drying machine chassis, as defined by the characterizing features given in Claim 1 and subsequent Claims.
- Primary object of the present invention is hence to provide a laundry washing/drying machine with adhesive-free noise insulation elements attachable to the laundry washing/drying machine chassis.
- the present invention proposes a laundry washing/drying machine preferably having a plurality of noise suppression elements as intermediate support elements placed parallel to and in contact with the front wall or the lateral walls of the laundry washing/drying machine.
- the noise suppression elements at least partially cover inner surfaces of the front wall or the lateral walls so as to be attached thereto without an adhesive backing that effects surface-wide attachment but by means of attachment means secured to the respective wall surfaces.
- Each noise suppression element is made out of a felt-like material having a first planar surface establishing a surface contact relationship with the front wall or lateral walls and a second planar surface facing the central inner part of the laundry washing/drying machine.
- the noise suppression element has a constant thickness throughout its entire cross-sectional area.
- the attachment means of the invention is a mechanical part having an attachment portion where it is connected with the respective wall surface.
- a carrying portion thereof supports and carries the noise suppression element at a slit portion thereof so that the noise suppression element is maintained in a plane parallel to the wall surface.
- the attachment means further comprises a retaining portion, a portion bent from the carrying portion to retain the noise suppression element in place so that accidental removal thereof is prevented.
- the noise suppression element is therefore placed to be simultaneously hanging from a multitude of attachment means at slit portions of the noise suppression element with which the attachment means engage.
- the carrying portions of the attachment means secured to a respective wall’s surface can have differing orientations so that slit portions of corresponding orientations engage with the attachment means and a more reliable mechanical connection is obtainable.

- Fig. 2 demonstrates inner perspective view of the laundry washing/drying machine front-side wall according to the present invention.
- Fig. 3 demonstrates an enlarged view of attachment means effectuating joining of insulation elements according to the present invention.
- Fig. 4 partially demonstrates a general perspective view of the laundry washing/drying machine chassis according to the present invention.
- Fig. 5 demonstrates an enlarged view of attachment means as secured to the inner lateral walls of the chassis according to the present invention.
- Fig. 6 partially demonstrates a general front view of the laundry washing/drying machine chassis with line A-A according to the present invention.
- Fig. 7 demonstrates together a cross-sectional view of the attachment means taken along the line A-A of Fig. 6 and a perspective view of the attachment means according to the present invention.
- Fig. 8 demonstrates a noise suppression element with slit portions according to the present invention.
- the present invention relates to a laundry washing/drying machine (1) comprising a front door (2) allowing access into a drum of the machine.
- the laundry washing/drying machine (1) generally comprises a six-sided cabinet with the front-side door by which one can put in a laundry to be washed and/or dried.
- the laundry washing/drying machine (1) of the invention conventionally comprises an electric motor rotatable to drive the drum via a belt-pulley transmission.
- a motor of a home-user laundry washing/drying machine (1) such as a washing machine being supported on a frame portion of the machine’s chassis (3), can reach speeds to cause non-negligible audible noise, a plurality of noise suppression elements (10) in accordance with the invention is used as delineated hereinafter.
- the noise suppression element (10) of the present invention constitutes an intermediate support element between the front wall (4) and the inner central part as well as the lateral walls (5) and the inner central part of the laundry washing/drying machine’s (1) six-sided cabinet.
- the noise suppression element (10) suppresses resonant motion and dissipates vibrational energy so that its radiation is prevented, significantly contributing in reducing the overall noise being generated by the laundry washing/drying machine (1).
- the noise suppression elements (10) at least partially cover the inner surfaces of the front wall (4) as well as the lateral walls (5) so that radiation of the vibrational energy is prevented.
- the noise suppression elements (10) are essentially made out of a large felt-like material with a planar surface establishing a surface contact relationship with the front wall (4) and lateral walls (5) and having a constant thickness throughout the entire cross-sectional area.
- the noise suppression elements (10) are attached to the front wall (4) and the lateral walls (5) by means of attachment means (6) secured to the respective wall’s surface.
- Each attachment means (6) comprises an attachment portion (7) where connection with the wall surface is effected, a carrying portion (8) where a noise suppression element is carried and supported so as to extend parallel to the wall surface and a retaining portion (9) by which accidental removal of the noise suppression element is prevented.
- a plurality of attachment means (6) basically provide that a noise suppression element (10), when mounted, remains attached to the wall surface in contact therewith without requiring application of adhesives.
- the noise suppression element (10) is therefore placed to be hanging simultaneously from a plurality of attachment means (6) at pre-cult slit portions (11) thereof.
- the retaining portions (9) of the attachment means (6) can be either pre-shaped or bent over the noise suppression element (10) subsequently when the latter is placed, i.e. after the attachment means (6) is mounted and the noise suppression element (10) is also installed.
- the pre-shaped or pre-bent retaining portions (9) are demonstrated in Fig. 7.
- the noise suppression element (10) of the present invention therefore primarily prevents radiation of vibrations originated from the motor throughout the front (4) and lateral walls (5) and the chassis (3) of the appliance. This is accomplished by means of the noise suppression elements (10) establishing a surface-wide contact relationship with the front (4) and lateral walls (5) and enclosing the motor so as to provide a physical barrier against propagation of vibrations through the air.
- the attachment means (6) can be secured to the front wall (4) or the lateral walls (5) by any suitable means or method such as laser welding, which is preferable due to the small amount of heat input and accompanied swelling effect resulting from the welding, which would be noticeable on the outer side of the machine.
- the present invention proposes a laundry washing/drying machine (1) to effectuate washing and/or drying processes of the laundry placed in a drum, the machine comprising a front door (2) allowing access into the drum, an electric motor rotating sad drum and a front wall (4) and lateral walls (5) forming part of the chassis (3) of the laundry washing/drying machine (1).
- At least one noise suppression element (10) is provided as an intermediate part attached to the front wall (4) or the lateral walls (5) of the laundry washing/drying machine (1), the noise suppression element (10) at least partially covering inner surfaces of the front wall (4) or the lateral walls (5) and being attached to the front wall (4) or the lateral wall (5) inner surfaces by means of attachment means (6) secured to the respective wall’s surface.
- Mechanical attachment of the noise suppression elements (10) without application of adhesives, such as for instance solvent-based adhesives effective in bonding rubber materials with metal surfaces, is particularly advantageous in that no associated fire accelerating effects will be a concern and a healthier working environment will be provided.
- the proposed alternative system being inexpensive substantially contributes to the overall cost of a mass-produced article such as a laundry washing/drying machine (1).
- the noise suppression element (10) is made out of a felt material with a planar surface establishing a surface contact relationship with the front wall (4) or lateral walls (5).
- the noise suppression element (10) has a constant thickness throughout its entire cross-sectional area.
- the attachment means (6) comprises an attachment portion (7) where connection with the respective wall surface is effected and a carrying portion (8) where the noise suppression element (10) is carried and supported so as to extend parallel to the wall surface.
- the attachment means (6) further comprises a retaining portion (9) to retain the noise suppression element (10) in its place by which accidental removal thereof is prevented.
- the noise suppression element (10) is placed to be hanging simultaneously from a plurality of attachment means (6).
- the noise suppression element (10) comprises a plurality of slit portions (11) with which the attachment means (6) are engaged so as to provide support by carrying portions (8) at the slit portions (11).
- the carrying portions (8) of the attachment means (6) secured to a respective wall’s surface have differing orientations, supporting slit portions (11) of corresponding orientations. This is especially advantageous in that different common axes of each pair of a carrying portion (8) and an associated slit portion (11) provide a better carrying and retaining effect to withstand forces from different directions.
- the attachment means (6) are joined to the front wall (4) or the lateral wall (5) inner surfaces by laser welding.
- the present invention therefore ensures that vibrational energy is dissipated by the noise suppression element (10) so that radiation of the vibrational energy is prevented, which significantly contributes in reducing the overall noise being generated by the laundry washing/drying machine (1).
