Definitions
- the present invention relates to lighting assemblies and, in particular, to lighting assemblies which can be used in lighting towers and which utilise light emitting diodes for illumination.
- LED light emitting diode
- an LED produces a narrow spectrum light by a process of electroluminescence and so, in order to produce diffused uniform light, the LED requires additional optical components, such as lenses and diffusers.
- a desired number of such LEDs are normally grouped together in a desired mounting configuration on an electrical board when constructing LED lighting assemblies or fixtures in order to achieve a desired luminescence.
- LED lighting assemblies As traffic lights, modern vehicle lights, building exteriors, and for many other applications where illumination and electronic signs and signals are desired.
- LED lighting assemblies have been used in lighting towers for outdoor construction sites, such as on roads where night lighting is required, or for indoor or underground industrial sites.
- LEDs produce more lumens per watt, and so generate less heat than other common types of lighting
- some LED lighting assemblies may still be susceptible to burnout due to ineffective heat dissipation within the assembly. This is especially a concern for any LED lighting assembly which needs to be protected against the ingress of dust and water, or be otherwise weather- proofed, to maintain optimal lighting efficiency and life span, and so has its LEDs located within a confined space inside the assembly where there is no, or very little, natural flow of air to cool the LEDs.
- an object of the present invention to provide an LED lighting assembly in which the LEDs are protected against the ingress of dust and water but which allows effective heat dissipation from the LEDs within the assembly.
- a lighting assembly comprising:
- a housing having an open top, an open bottom, an air flow passageway between the open top and the open bottom, and a light diffuser defining an outer wall of the housing
- heat generated by the light emitting diodes when they are in use is communicated to the fins and then rises as hot air through the air flow passageway to exit the assembly through the open top, whereupon surrounding air enters the assembly through the open bottom to replace the rising hot air and cool the fins, whereby the temperature of the light emitting diodes is moderated.
- the outer wall of the housing is cylindrical, and the mounting wall is a closed wall.
- the closed wall is an octagonal wall, although the closed wall may be of other suitable wall shapes in other embodiments, such as a circular wall or a hexagonal wall.
- the fins extend radially into the passageway and are tapered.
- the mounting wall is polygonal and comprises a plurality of planar wall portions, each wall portion having connected thereto a planar electrical board of light emitting diodes.
- a lighting tower comprising a base, a mast extending upwardly from the base and having an upper end at which is connected a lighting head, the lighting head comprising one or more of the aforementioned lighting assemblies.
- the base is mounted to a trailer.
- the mast is rotatable and/or telescopically

- the lighting assembly 0 shown in Figs. 1 to 10 has a housing 2 with an open top 14, an open bottom 16 and an air flow passageway 18 between the open top 14 and the open bottom 16. There is a light diffuser 20 which defines an outer wall of the housing 12.
- the lighting assembly 10 also has a mounting wall 22 located inwardly of, and spaced apart from, the light diffuser 20.
- a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) 24 is mounted on an outward side of the mounting wall facing the light diffuser 20.

- the mounting wall 22 is, in this embodiment, a closed wall (also known as an endless wall) and, more particularly, is an octagonal wall, although the closed wall may be of other suitable wall shapes in other embodiments, such as a circular wall (or cylindrical), a hexagonal wall, or other suitable polygonal wall shapes.
- the fins 26 extend radially into the passageway 18 and are tapered. Connected to each of the eight planar wall portions of the octagonal mounting wall 22 is a planar electrical board 30 of LEDs 24.

- the wall parts are sealingly connected to each other at their respective vertical side edges by engaging clips 40.
- the top and bottom edges of each wall part are sealingly connected to respective top and bottom collars 42, 44 by suitable fasteners.
- the bottom collar 44 is connected to a base collar part 48.
- the collars 42, 44 and base collar part 48 may be made of plastic.
- fins 26 mounted to each of the four wall parts, and they are formed integrally together by an aluminium extrusion process. Alternatively, a die cast process may be used, and there may be a different number of fins.

- the four lighting assemblies operate at about 2.6 kW.
- the light passing outwardly through the diffusers represents a non-blinding 360° (non-directional) light source, and the area immediately below the four lighting assemblies is also fully illuminated by down beams from each of the lighting assemblies.
