Description

VALVE GUARD
The present invention relates to a valve guard for a gas cylinder valve. Cylinder valve assemblies for gas cylinders and the like are well known. It is common in the field to provide a valve guard which attaches to the cylinder and which protects the va!ve assembly in the event that the cylinder is dropped or knocked over. Compressed gas bottles used in industrial applications are typically large and heavy, standing up to 1.46m tall and weighing 82kg. While they are usually transported from filling to delivery vehicles on special trolleys, they must be moved from filling station to trolley and from trolley to vehicle by hand.
In order to move industrial gas bottles by hand, they are tilted off- vertical, with one hand holding the top of the bottle and the other rolling it forwards. Moving bottles in this manner is known as churning. Many modern gas bottles are fitted with valve guards which include a churning knob feature on the top which may be grasped to aid movement of the bottle.
It is also known to move gas bottled by crane by placing a craning strap or chain through the valve guard. However, valve guards have not been designed with this specific use in mind and consequently the valve guards can become damaged by craning, or in some cases, even become detached from the cylinder.
The present invention provides a valve guard for a cylinder valve assembly comprising a base portion for connection to a cylinder and an upper portion which is arranged to be located substantially above the cylinder valve assembly in use, the guard further comprising at least one arm which extends from the base portion to the upper portion, wherein the at least one arm comprises a plurality of ribs.
In one example, the valve guard comprises at least three arms, at least one of which comprises a plurality of ribs. The ribs may extend in a direction which is substantially parallel to the base portion.
The valve guard may comprise two separate pieces which are connected together to form the valve guard. In one embodiment, the two separate pieces are connected together by bolts.
The valve guard can further comprise a churning knob located at the upper portion and the churning knob may comprise an upper cover portion which is made from a different material to the rest of the valve guard.
The present invention also provides a valve guard for a cylinder valve assembly comprising a base portion for connection to a cylinder and an upper portion which is arranged to be located substantially above the cylinder valve assembly in use, the guard further comprising at least three arms which extend from the base portion to the upper portion, wherein at least one of the arms has a larger mean width than the other arms, wherein the width of the arms is measured at the outermost surface of the valve guard, furthest from the cylinder valve assembly in use, in a direction which is substantially parallel to the base portion.
In one example the first arm has a larger mean width than the other two arms and is located substantially opposite and between the other two arms. The arms may comprise a plurality of ribs. In a further aspect, the present invention provides a valve guard for a cylinder valve assembly comprising a base portion for connection to a cylinder and an upper portion which is arranged to be located substantially above the cylinder valve assembly in use, the guard further comprising a churning knob located at the upper portion, wherein the churning knob comprises an upper cover portion, and wherein valve guard comprises two separate pieces connected together in use, wherein the upper cover portion of the churning knob is retained in place by being captured by the two separate pieces of the valve guard when they are connected together.
An identification and/or communication device may be located in or under the upper cover portion of the churning knob which may be made of a different materia! to the two separate pieces of the valve guard.
In another aspect, the present invention provides an assembly comprising a cylinder and a valve guard as described above. The ribs on the valve guard provide a better grip for users handling a gas cylinder and the narrower arms provide convenient grip points. The wide arm provides increased protection to the valve assembly while maintaining clear open access to the valve assembly to facilitate operation. The upper portion of the valve guard provides a strong location through which craning straps or chains can be passed to allow safer more reliable craning of the cylinders.
An example of the present invention will now be described with reference to the following Figures in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a valve guard; and
Figure 2 is an alternative perspective view of the valve guard of Figure
1.
The Figures show a valve guard 1 comprising a base portion 23 and an upper portion 24. The base portion 23 is connected to the upper portion 24 by two arms 14 and a third arm 15. A churning knob 12 is located at the top of the valve guard 10. In use, the valve guard 10 is attached to the cylinder (not shown) by an interference fit between the guard and the cylinder neck. This prevents relative rotation between the valve guard and valve assembly. A keeper plate 18 is located in an opening in the base portion 23. The keeper plate has a hole 22 in which the valve stem passes in use. Such attachment of valve guards to cylinders is well known in the art and not described in detail here.
The valve guard 10 comprises to separate die cast portions 25, 26 which are bolted together at bolt hole 19 to form the complete guard 10. The churning knob 12 is split in half with one side being part of the die cast part 25, and the other half being part of the die cast part 26. The churning knob comprises an upper cover portion 13 which is captured in grooves (not shown) on the internal surface of the churning knob halves. Thus, when the two halves 25, 26 of the valve guard are bolted together, the upper cover portion 13 of the churning knob 12 is captured and unable to be removed. The upper cover portion 13 is made of a plastics material but may be metal, or any other suitable material, if desired. In an optional embodiment, a communication device such as an RFID tag or similar may be located in or under the upper cover portion 13.
Alternatively or additionally a power source, identification device or similar may be located in or under the upper cover portion 13. The two arms 14 are located substantially opposite the third arm 15 and the third arm 15 is located substantially between the two arms 14. The rear surface of the third arm 15 comprises a recess 20 for receiving identification stickers and the like.
The innermost surface of the two arms 14 comprises a plurality of ribs 17 which extend in a direction which is substantially parallel to the base portion 23. Similarly, each outer edge of the third arm 15 comprises a plurality of ribs 17 which also extend in a direction which is substantially parallel to the base portion 23.
In alternative embodiments, not shown, the valve guard may comprise only one ribbed arm which extends from the base portion to a position substantially above the cylinder valve assembly in use. In this case a churning knob may be located at the distal end of the arm. Alternatively the guard may comprise two arms which meet at the top of the guard to form a closed upper portion. In a further alternative, the guard may comprise more than three arms.
It is not necessary that every arm comprises ribs, nor that every arm comprises ribs along its entire length. Ribs may be provided only where the valve guard is likely to be handled. The ribs may optionally be orientated longitudinally such that they run substantially along the length of the arms. Any combination of the above mentioned rib arrangements may be used in combination.
In an alternative embodiment to that shown in Figure 2, the ribs 17 on the third arm 15 may extend the whole way across the width of the arm 15.
